What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2

Installed the new fuel pump (originally intended for Colin's car) in mine and inspected hose near charcoal canister. Need to go reset SES and fuel up (with key off per one thread I read).

Also inspected my front end but can't pinpoint the clunk I've been hearing on certain slow turns over speed bumps.

It's legal to have a clean car. But it's illegal in Vancouver to wash your car on a private residence as well as water grass with fresh city water.

My Parents have setup a system to collect most cleanish "grey water" in giant garbage bins outside during Vancouver's stage 3 water restrictions. So I managed the legal cleaning of his car in the driveway using only grey water aka used water...

All clean and the water bin was just topped off to the brim again, for grass watering tomorrow evening.

It's amazing how much water we send down the drain in a first world economy when you instead, collect some of it!!

That's pretty cool. I plan on doing something like that when I own a house. Some day. #CaliforniaRealEstate.

Drove my ZHP to the car wash and proceeded to clean up my BBS CH wheels then I took my ZHP to the BMW CCA Narragansett Show and Shine and filled the gas tank on both cars this afternoon :) Then watched the rains come....

There were only two ZHPs at the event today....couldn't allow Chris to be the only one to bring his ZHP so I brought mine as well :)

ESS Tuning fixed me up. They replaced the smooth intercooler hoses that were collapsing on themselves. They sent me the ribbed intercooler hoses like all the original TS2 kits came with. The latest versions have this rad orange stripe on them, looks racecar now

Just re-code your car temporarily until you get a working key. I have a brand new spare at home so I don't have to worry. I think the chip in the key will help disarm with the key in ignition. I'll try it later and see.

Haven't put in the nav radio I got from Rando yet (need to order tools)... Waiting patiently for the order from ECS to arrive... So, in the meantime I decided to try updating the firmware in my radio and test out a new nav DVD for my region. Installed the v32 version with Night Mode, Camera Alerts, M Logo... Went from white Helvetica === BMW === startup screen to color ///M logo. :fist pump

I'd like to try the NavTweak thing at some point and build my own startup screen, but I have to get a VM and Windows installed to do it... Haven't needed Windows for anything for awhile.

You're right Charlie. Just tested it. The alarm went off and I just inserted the key into ignition and turned once....that's equivalent to hitting unlock on the keyfob to disarm the alarm. This is a worthy coding just so the car goes down without a fight and hopefully doesn't give a thief enough time to steal everything in your car. Also if they jimmy the trunk and open it, the alarm will go off as well.

The only thing is most people (including thieves) ignore car alarms. It might reduce the amount if time they are looking thru all your belongings inside the car.

I added a grom audio BT3 to my car for some iPod connectivity. Really nice to have my music back and I can control a lot of it from my steering wheel. This 16:9 nav is kind of a pain. Still need to route it from my trunk to the center console though

That is correct. You do lower the front subframe enough to slide the oil pan out.

I didn't bother with the oil pump nut since i don't track the car and the zhp has a different nut to prevent it from backing off.

From what I've read, the oil pump nut/shaft problem occurs from sustained high RPM harmonics. The OEM harmonic balancer isn't designed for that as well as the single nut and shaft of the oil pump. Our cars don't really make any power above 6000 RPMs anyway. I wouldn't bother touching the oil pump unless you're going racing on a regular basis. In that case You'd want to replace it with something like the ATI damper + GSR Oil pump which are pretty pricy

The dealer replaced the rotors on our '14 Elite under warranty - says it's pretty common - fixed our problem

Bedded the pads on the van. I think I stopped the zhp pad light (wire mod :) Also washed the tow front wheels since I had one off and they were really dirty.

Found this little gem embedded in the front right. Luckily it didn't go deep enough to cause a leak.

I think anything will be better than my old shocks! I compressed them just to see how slow they would rebound. They didn't. They just stop. That's not completely true, it took about 3 minutes for them to fully rebound but they are dead. I can't decide if the fluid had all leaked out (there weren't any signs of seepage), if the internal valving had broken down, or if the fluid had just degraded to crap.

Tried to diagnose a stupid rattle that comes from the passenger front wheel and has been bothering me for a long time. Knock on the bare hub with a rubber mallet - no rattle. Put the rotor on, rattle is back. Tried different spare rotors lying around, same issue. Argh.

More worryingly, found the shaft selector seal to be leaking and when I got home, I can see drops of oil on the ground underneath that spot. Eeeks! How worried should I be given that I can't easily check the tranny oil level?

Well not today but this week I did give mine some black cube trim and a ZHP steering wheel.

I refreshed the front suspension with new Koni Sport struts, new upper and lower spring pads, strut mounts, strut tower reinforcement plates, bump stops, dust boots, and mounting nuts. I made some very silly mistakes so I took the better part of the day doing it, like mounting the new driver's side Koni strut on the passenger side :facepalm.

Haven't gotten it down off the jack stands to test it out but I'll need an alignment to get the best result (plus FCABs and RTABs).

I hate that post-work rattle, but thankfully it happens rarely. I wish I could help you with the oil stuff, but I can't provide any other advice other than jack it up and add new gear oil and see if it overflows quickly, demonstrating if it is full or not).

A fun thing - installed Gloss Black kidneys - and a little basic stuff. Replaced cabin air filter and the cover that was all white/gray. Found the filter was original 2004 vintage, and the kicker... I think the air filter is same.

Seems to have done a great job getting all the previous cheap leather care stuff off leaving them looking clean. (Note: Pass seat has rejuvenation oil still applied, that's why it's shiny.) While I was waiting for the seats to bake in the sun I installed some Umnitza V2 angle eyes. Also threw on my front license plate before the local PD hassles me again for not having it.

Wow, that driver's seat looks awesome. Nice! I really need to do that. The leather in my vert just looks dry and cheap, and frankly a little bit like VW leatherette.

It was hot and muggy in Iowa for a lot of June, July, and August... So, we moved to Utah. We're so thrilled - I wish we would have done it sooner. It's the high desert, so it certainly gets hot in July and August, but it's very dry, so as long as you're not in direct sun, it's not bad at all. Gets a little toasty later afternoon, but I can be back outside doing projects after 7 and it's totally comfortable - even in the high-80's. Love it!

I visited Salt Lake City in June as part of my trip through Canyonlands and Arches national parks and I absolutely loved the place. The geographical features were stunning, especially when I was driving from SLC to the Bonneville flats. The vast flats and the mountains in the distance were just something out of a painting! You are lucky to be living in Utah :)

Sunday project... Tore the front end apart to install the new lower grill and decided to clean everything up while I was in there.

I'll detail it in my project thread, but removed the bumper and front fender liner pieces, the plastic air dam piece in front of the radiator, removed the plastics from the bumper, installed the new grill, plastic-painted the second piece that attaches to it, and I'm putting it all back together this afternoon.

Looks very spiffy so far. If only my wife were here to see my front bumper on the dining table. :-)

How was it getting the bumper off? Did you have to jack the car up? I'm still deciding if I want to replace the lower grille or just paint it.

Because I hadn't done it before, and because I couldn't find anything definitive re the coupe bumper, it was a pain in the ass and took me at least an hour just to get the damn thing off.

I even saw something about somebody doing the grille replacement with the bumper on, but there's no way in hell that would work unless the car was missing air dam pieces.

If you want to do it, I'll take some pics and write it up for you. Piece of cake now that I know what I'm doing. I'm really glad I did it now because it's looking really good.

Yesterday, a friend of mine helped with the replacement of a steering angle sensor. What a PITA that was... initially. We removed the whole steering column in order to get to the washer and collars that had to be removed before the sensor could be slid off. Once the column is out, it's easy to replace the sensor, but getting the column back in was the real challenge. We found it's easiest to bolt the column up, then manipulate the end of the shaft by hand to extend it into the hole in the firewall (please, keep your dirty minds to yourselves... kthxbai :biggrin). Aligning it this way is far easier, but still a PITA overall.

Since I'm waiting for the cooling system parts to come I had some time to clean the leather with some Leatherique. Seems to have done a great job getting all the previous cheap leather care stuff off leaving them looking clean. (Note: Pass seat has rejuvenation oil still applied, that's why it's shiny.) While I was waiting for the seats to bake in the sun I installed some Umnitza V2 angle eyes. Also threw on my front license plate before the local PD hassles me again for not having it.

Since my ///M has been sidelined due to a ruptured high pressure power steering hose, I have updated the headlights with new ZKW lens, installed an IAT relocation kit, repaired the styrofoam bumper spacers on my kevlar bumper support and installed my polished oil filter cap.... a few of these items have been put off for just over a year now so since the ///M is temporarily OOC, I felt it needed just a little love.... at least progress is being made....:)

Thanks! After some discussion with my son, I decided to go with the amber. They are also from Umnitza and we are very pleased with them. I felt they really compliment the amber corners and are VERY unique, which may be good OR not so good. I get a lot of looks and affirmation on them. So I'm glad I made the choice. Kaylor's are very bright day and night and I love them too. The ambers did have to be special ordered because of the low demand, but it was worth the couple week wait. They are a couple of years old now and still look great day and night. Be sure to hook up the wire to turn them on when you unlock the doors!

Finally coded my VIN to my replacement Steering Angle Sensor. Kind of a pain figuring out what the logic was to the HEX codes when following the DIY, so I think I'm gonna rewrite it and explain all of the elements of the process. Look for a rewritten DIY soon...

Inspection II, including all fluids (except oil, done just last week), plugs, all filters including fuel filter, new water pump, thermostat, thermostat housing. Currently at 81k miles. Plugs have apparently never been changed. Last major service was when I bought her 3 years ago, at 52k miles. At that time, I refreshed the entire suspension, front brakes, A- and C-pillars, replaced DISA with DISA Gold from G.A.S. She'll be solid for a long time after this visit.

Worked on the 330Ci today - cleaned and waxed the fall/winter wheels and installed them. While at it, I tore down the front brakes, cleaned and lubed everything, then reassembled. Finally, bypassed a failed brake-pad wear sensor until I can get a replacement. Need to get it in for an alignment, but I don't see a day off anytime in the near future to make that happen...

Today I finished repairs to my M3 an replaced my high pressure power steering hoses with a new OEM part along with new banjo bolts and crush washers, updated my ZHP's new Mk IV Navi computer with v32 and custom BMW splash screen and installed MTec II Hamann fog covers given to me by Botond...:)

Today Charrie and I did a thorough cleaning of my engine bay. It was in dire need, and it came out perfectly!

1) Fixed the Khoalty angel eyes 'dangling' issue. The way the clips hold the outer angel eyes onto the headlamp results in the ring not being fully secure and it moves when the car goes over bumps or when I shut the door after parking (a friend commented - 'hey why is your light moving?'). Fixed that with gluing the clip to the ring and securing it properly with some additional padding.

2) Checked tire-pressure on all tires and topped-up

3) Took the car for a drive. Last few weeks before I have to change into winter tires :(

You can be pretty rough and even do a light spray with a hose. Just cover the main electronics area and don't stick a high pressure nozzle up close to anything.

I've always used a pressure washer. I actually prefer the pressure washer as the volume of water you're putting in the engine compartment is much lower than with the hose. Just use a degreaser per directions and make sure you don't get the gun close to anything and rinse it off well.

I've only ever had a problem washing an engine compartment once in 30 years, and it would have been a problem with a hose, too.

I sprayed down my wife's Mazda 626. When I was finished and had the car all cleaned up and started it to put it back in the garage, it ran rough, missed, and threw errors.

I start digging around and figure out the damn spark plugs are in wells, with caps that didn't seal, and nowhere for water to drain or dry when it did get in. I used air and blasted it out and it was fine. I asked the dealer if something was defective and they just advised me to to ever clean the engine compartment. Lord.

Yeah, what was funny is I was just driving the car in the mountains yesterday and got an SES light at low speed in some twisties. Checked the codes when I got home and surprise! Lean on banks one and two. Nice of it to wait until I had the parts on-hand. :-)

Got rid of a squeak coming from the engine bay when going over bumps. Turns out the lower part of the AFE intake rubbing with the metal of the car. Nothing some foam tape could not solve :)

Agree with ecrabb - the intake boot design is horrendous. Something that should not take more than few minutes takes almost an hour to disassemble and put it back together.

I know short shift kits make shifting action stiffer. Gears 1-4 are fine, but getting into 5th gear is very difficult, and 6th gear is difficult as well although not nearly as tough as 5th. I'm not sure what's up with it. It's nothing like the same shift kit in my father's E39 540i.

Never had this issue with any short shift I've had. Try changing your transmission fluid.

What kit are you running? I changed out the transmission fluid only a couple of months ago. Shifts were smooth as butter before I had the UUC SSK installed over the weekend.

It's very difficult to get the shifter to go into gear. I have to put significant force behind it and the shifting motion is sort of a curved J motion rather than right angle _| motion.

With regard to the direction of the shifter, if you lift up your shift boot you'll see a screw head on the barrel of the shifter, that should be facing towards the front of the car.

I appreciate the photo! The screw head in my car is facing the front of the car like in the picture and the UUC directions. I tried removing the rubber boot below the foam so I could see/feel if the DSSR is installed correctly, but I couldn't get it off. I will try again tomorrow. I am wondering if I did receive a faulty unit, but that'll have to wait until Saturday to be sure.

Ive been sans mechanic since I moved to SoCal around the new year. Car was asking for an oil change so I found a BMW/Mini shop up the street from my work and decided to take my car there for its oil service to shake hands with everyone and see how the shop does business. I liked the look of it. Very clean and organized. They had late model and older BMW/Minis in and around the shop. And their two shuttle vehicles were E39s (with 250k+! But they ran and looked nice).

I walk in, Service guy: You're in the ZHP that just rolled past the door? Thats a clean car!

While at work I get a call from the manager: Ok we did the oil change and did a good once over. Im sure you are not going to be surprised to hear me say this but your car is *takes a breath* AAA-mazingly clean. Doesn't need anything that we can see and after I looked over the excel sheet you sent me with your service history.

A Tech picks me up in a E39: You have that silver grey ZHP? Dude that is a clean car (why do they like that word so much?? it actually could use a car wash). I have a 328i but its no where near your car.

I pay and sign the service papers and look it over to review mechanics comments on the sheet: checked this and that *yadda* *yadda* *yadda* front pads 10MM, rear 5MM. Tires 6MM, etc etc....last comment: Vehicle is in excellent condition.

Drove away a proud ZHP papa.

I swear the car runs a little smoother just after an oil change. Is it just me imagining things?

22322282340 That's the part number and there are two mounts. The other are the old ones. As far as the procedure I did it a bit backwards than most diys. I loosened the two bolts for the exhaust hanger and then raised the trans a bit. I removed the 4 bolts from the bracket and then the two bolts that hold the transmission mounts. Remove the bracket and now you have more access to the top nuts of the mounts. Lower the transmission now to get more space. I have no idea how people got to the top two nuts with the bracket in place. I tried using a wrench but it's so tight in there. I was able to use a ratchet with a short 13 mm after lowering the transmission. To install the new ones I just did it backwards. Much easier to install the mounts on the transmission and then the brace.

As for the jacking points, I always prefer to use the frame. It's easier to jack up by the pads and put the stands on something more solid than some rubber mounts especially with a lowered car.

I read a couple write-ups quickly a few weeks ago before going at it. The single worst part was attaching the line that snakes through the manifold. To make matters worse, my phone was dead before I started working, so I had no resource or advice while messing with it. The kit I got from Tischer was good and contained everything, minus a TB gasket, which probably isn't needed in most instances.
