Everything went back together smoothly. The most time consuming part was removing the hoses from the radiator and thermostat. I wasn't planning on doing my radiator either, but in wrestling the upper hose off the radiator I created a slight stress crack in the plastic side cap. I replaced to be safe.

Also, I would highly suggest mounting the expansion tank onto the mounting plate outside of the vehicle...much easier. Finally, I added part #11531436410 (coolant return hose) to the usual list of replacement parts. It was cheap enough, and I figured I might as well since I had to remove one end from the expansion tank anyway.

+1. When I did my refresh back in April I swapped out all the parts and that definitely made it easier. The hardest parts I had with the whole operation were transferring the bottom plastic bracket from the old radiator to the new one, getting the new radiator to seat back into the bay correctly, and getting the upper radiator hose to fit onto the radiator at the end. Other than that it was all pretty straight forward.

Since Alex was doing his rear brakes. I decided to do mine. Just did the full parking brake adjustment from the annoying turny knob inside the rear rotor to the cable adjustment on the interior lever. Doing this is much more tedious with an LSD!!

I know it's an ///M and it just wants to GO but that's ridiculous if it tries to go without me being in the car. LOL

Picked up a set on eBay - not quite as clean as I was expecting, but a decent price and they match the rest of the car - these should have been stock with the ZHP

Drove the ZHP from NKY to Emerald Isle, NC. 1.5 tanks of gas. First full tank yielded 540 miles at 32.5mpg (16.6 gal tank). She was bullet proof on the way down. Also got into 2 spirited races with a Morgan super 7 (1.6 Miata motor 2300ish pounds if not less). From a roll 60-100 it was damn close but I had him by half a car. From a red light dig he smoked me by 4-5 car lengths. I'm totally stock. Older gent driving it and HE was the one that wanted to have some fun. Very nice guy

I verified my VANOS tabs were good and did a valve guide adjustment on my S54 today. :) Also polished my fuel rails while I had everything apart ;)

Replaced original Sachs dampers with Koni Sports, new spring pads, bump stops, boots/tubes, strut mounts. Already had RE RSMs so I reused those.

Ran out of time and energy but will soon replace the rear outer bushes/balljoints and RTABs. I'm afraid what the RTABS will look like. Maybe next weekend.

Interested to see what you think of the Konis and at what stiffness setting you put them at. I have all the parts for a suspension refresh but I will wait to do any of it myself until mid July.

For reference I reused the stock ZHP springs that were in good shape. I started with the fronts 1 turn from soft and the rears 1.5, with the thought that they will soften up after a bit and I can increase the damping on the fronts with no disassembly.

My post-install test drive thought was that those settings were a bit overdamped for surface street commuting, but highway speeds and composure under cornering loads was excellent. Will need some more driving time for more feedback, but there is plenty of positive info about them from better drivers than I.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'm doing the same thing including reusing the stock springs. The only difference is I'm replacing the FCABs with ones from the Z4M which should increase caster. I plan to do one turn from soft for front and rears and see what that gets me. I'm worried that they won't soften up as much as I hope and then I'll have to remove the shocks and do that whole thing.

Got an oil change done today. She sits at 154,300 KMs as of today. The dealership also found oil leaks under the engine (oil pan gasket - pretty sure) and a minor leak at the auto transmission selector rod seal (part# was 24501423606 on the estimate). Anybody has any clue about this?

I didn't adjust the coilover height out of the box. It was about a 1.5-2" drop.

Oil filter housing gasket leak sometimes looks like an oil pan leak.
If you've never done that gasket or the valve cover gasket, I'd do those first. They are both pretty easy DIY

Had a driver's side fog light ballast go bad which also caused my 9006 bulb to die. I replaced them with spares I have stowed in my garage.

Can't remember where I got these ballasts but they didn't last nearly as long as the DDM Tuning fog ballasts I've been using on my M3. I'll be ordering another set from DDM Tuning if I ever need another set...

Liquid electrical tape was used to "seal" the back of the fog housing sealing the bulb for a perfect watertight seal. (for those wondering... I have two complete sets of M3 fog housings sitting in my garage)

All good so I went to the passenger's side and changed out the bulb and sealed it the same way I did the driver's side :)

Yes, try those first.

Replaced OFHG, VCG, CCV last May hence I suspected the oil pan gasket.

Any clues on the auto tranny selector shaft seal leak? That was also something that seems to have a minor leak according to the dealership.

I remember those days, it probably took me 18 months and about 3 kits to finally get a reliable set in there, once I did though it was good to go for several years, up until selling it.

Starting to really love this door setup, especially since I'm a professional student (kind of a joke, seems like I'll never get done), pop open both doors on the drivers-side put my backpack in the back seat, ready to roll.

Two motors underneath this cover, 2015 got changed to metal, 2014 had CFRP (jealous). The black cap is removable, thats how you check the oil level in the REx.

Debadged, I'm surprised I didn't do this sooner. Day 60 of ownership. The more I drive this car the more it just grows on me. I used to think the back was the "weakest link" in the looks department but its shaping up nicely with tint and no badges. Might try some smoke vinyl on those lower bumper lights.

I'm fairly certain he has recently serviced his DISA, as did I. We both still experienced power dips afterwards.
My dip went away after servicing, and then came back a few days later and it was about the same as it was before. I'm running it unplugged as well and so far, no dip.

I'm thinking more on future consequences of living them unplugged. As in what would be the effects on emission? Wouldn't the OBC get an input of them being unplugged? Smog test in Cali is so way different and stringent. The latest they got is that the tech would just plug them in and they do nothing. The machine would get all information and send to the DMV. Not able to manipulate and just get a readout if you pass or fail.

There are no check codes that get thrown when you unplug it. I'm fairly certain the DISA is not an emissions-related part, so I don't foresee any issues with CA's ridiculous emissions tests.

The software update practically disables the DISA (this is what I've been reading), so getting that software update from the dealer is pretty much the same thing the way I see it.


I'm thinking more on future consequences of living them unplugged. As in what would be the effects on emission? Wouldn't the OBC get an input of them being unplugged? I personally would not disconnect the DISA valve. Reason being is that the DISA valve is what lets the intake manifold use both set of internal runners.

Below the activation point of 4k rpm, the shorter runners are used to push the air into the engine in the lower rpm range. When the DISA valves activates, the longer runners then are being used. The way I see it is that if you disconnect the DISA valve, the intake manifold will always be using the longer runners which in theory would result in a torque/power loss in the lower rpm range. Up top the car would feel the same.

DISA fails open when unplugged (all intake runners in the loop)? Did you notice a difference in low end torque?

Up top the car would feel the same.

Yes, this is the side effect of getting the software update. Because the DISA gets disabled, lower-end torque suffers.
Honestly I haven't noticed too much of a difference. Our cars are slow anyway, so meh.

I just did a full cooling system overhaul to include using a Wahler thermostat (seems to be what was most recommended). I'm curious to know how the 2 units failed/were defective so that I can keep an eye on mine.

The seals fail. The Behr unirs do not have an issue and are a slightly different design.

so, in light of this little tidbit of info - a DISA rebuild might not even be warranted if the vacuum pot fails - which could be the case with shawn's car, BP's car, and my car (doing the same things - and it is incredibly inconsistent, as well). going to unplug mine for a few days and then consider ordering a new DISA depending on the results - and i have a GAS DISA rebuild kit sitting on the shelf, too...

I bought a brand new DISA last year and installed it and I definitely have the 2800 dip. Noticed it every single time yesterday afternoon on the 401 when I was driving to Toronto.

In a state where aftermarket window tinting is illegal, I was able to get my ///M legitimately safety checked thanks to a Doctor's note my doc wrote authorizing my use of window tint on my cars. :thumbsup

I can do this on Sunday afternoon when I drive back to Ottawa. So I just unplug the electrical connector to the DISA, correct?.

In a state where aftermarket window tinting is illegal, I was able to get my ///M legitimately safety checked thanks to a Doctor's note my doc wrote authorizing my use of window tint on my cars. :thumbsup

Oil change on the 330Ci, also cleaned the rear wheel-speed sensors (did the fronts last week) I've got a yellow brake warning light that I can't seem to figure out and have heard that the speed sensors can sometimes cause that. It's happened before, then went away, always after I swap wheels/tires. Thought maybe I was over-torqueing them, but redoing that didn't solve the problem.

Going to clean and Armorall the rear wheel wells while the tires are off (sure is nice having the hoist!!!) and do a few other things, then switch to working on the ZHP - needs trans fluid swap and parking brake adjustment.

i unplugged my DISA today, still have the stutters but the 4K dip is gone, as expected. also, much growlier intake noise below 4K rpm!

Finished the suspension refresh with new outer ball joints. Pulled the RTAB carriers out since I thought they would be gone for sure at 90k, but they looked brand new. No way they could be original, right? My M3's were shot at 55k. PO must have had them changed, but not known what was done. I guess that is good news!

It's pretty great. At first I honestly wasn't sure if the car had actually accepted the tune... but I guess it has a short learning period? The throttle response feels sharped up, more midrange power, 5-7k rpm screams now. Probably due to the throttle response, but, I'm breaking traction off the line and on sharp turns more easily and heel-toe is much easier.

Unrelated, a coworker asked what year my car was and was so surprised it was an 05. He said he would have believed me if I said '14/'15 :)

They make aftermarket ones, which is what I was referring to. If it's labeled as Genuine BMW then they're fine, but if they're BavAuto brand then they are aftermarket ones made in China.

Wasn't to bad. Took just about 2.5 hrs hardest part was the lower intake hose clamps. Good thing I have skinny arms and hands. Whoever did this last time installed them in the worst location. I clocked them so they can be reached from the top with a long screw driver on reinstall. The car was supposed to have the CCV system replaced 15k ago, but it looks like they may have only changed a few hoses (previous owner may have been misled). All of the hoses were cold weather, but the oil separator was not (missing the foam surround). Now for a nice 100 mile test drive to my companies main office tomorrow. Can't wait!

Bought a set of D-Force LTW5 wheels, 17x8.5, ET40, a Dinan strut bar, and a Dinan CAI tonight. Wheels are bright orange, and one took a little bit of a hit on one lip, so they'll need a little work before I throw them on, but I'm pretty pumped about the purchase.

Had EF1 motorsports remove the driveshaft. I sent it off for a rebuild and it's back in the car with a freshly painted (aluminum color paint) exhaust heat shield and all new hardware. Driveshaft is back in the car and it's smooth as butter again.

Lesson learned - I should've sent the driveshaft off for a rebuild the first go around, rather than installing a CV joint and carrier bearing myself.

Lesson earned, put the o-ring on the end of the dipstick tube, then install it. Don't seat the o-ring in the crankcase and then install the tube, it will just get pushed into the oil pan and you will have no o-ring and a really big oily mess.

Got it all buttoned up, and mostly cleaned up, and car is running great and holding her fluids.

Found a tech at one of the local Indys who does work on the side on weekends. Paid him $140 to install my BMW Performand SSK and aluminum pedal set, and swap the alcantara steering wheel, shift and ebrake boots for leather. I thought that was a bargain. . .

Yeah it's bad even up in the PacNW. 20 of our 36 counties in Oregon have declared drought status with two more waiting on governor approval, but it's nothing like California. No rationing yet. When I was up in the San Juan Islands for the 4th, everything was insanely dry. I've been going up there for about 18 years and I've never seen it that dry before.

Bought the car 5 years ago, and waited for her to get "non-special" status. That never happened. Not sure why, after all this model was sold only in 2006.

Sweet! In Canada the environmental regulations require shops to inspect the system for leaks and do a full service prior to filling the freon if its level is under 50%. The whole thing ran me $150 USD including materials so It wasn't too big a deal!

Serviced my sunroof tracks and shades with Graphite lubricant.

Then I re-calibrated the sunroof holding tilt for 10+ seconds after closing the roof. Once it tilted and opened I let go of the tilt button, depressed tilt again and held until the sunroof fully closed.

Yeah remove the sunroof and weld in a delete panel.

1. Turn your ignition to on but do not start the engine, AC position
2. Hold the moonroof button back to fully open the roof and hold it, the moonroof will go back and once its there KEEP holding the button back for about 20-30 seconds. (There will be no acknowledgement of doing this.)
3. Next push the button forward all the whole way, the moonroof will go forward and close, once it's closed KEEP holding the button forward until the moonroof goes up to the vent/tilt position.
4. Now depress the button (upwards) to tilt/lift the moonroof, even though it is already tilted and HOLD for approximately 20~30 seconds until the moonroof tilts up one level higher and then back to normal tilt.
5. Let go of the moonroof tilt button.

There.....all reset and calibrated!

Why do you need to do this? What is there to re-calibrate? The auto open/close?

Oh after fooling around and trying to put my shade back on the tracks, I missed putting the rear motorized slider into the right place so it confused the system and it started freaking out. When I hit close it would open. LOL. So I installed everything right and I did the reset and it's all good now.

Saw my oil sensor light come on as I was picking up slugs (HOV riders). Parked and checked it. Level was in gap below "good" range after 3-4 min. I added a touch to be safe and then headed north on 95. Light didn't return. Maybe it was a tad low or maybe my sensor is having sympathy issues along with Colin's buggy one.

Pay a professional to do that. The front end is a $1600 job including labour. You don't want to screw up the material. It's really expensive.

But I can wash the front end without worrying about swirling or scratching. It's as glossy as the clear coat so there is no difference to the naked eye. The layer is thick enough to feel slightly rubbery so rocks will bounce off but still hard feeling next to feeling my front doors which are not wrapped.

I like that if I do swirl the surface, within 30 minutes it'll be back to perfect gloss.

My father-in-law and I went to the DMV to transfer the e90 title to his name. Later we stopped at my Indy, so they could meet each other. He plans to take the car for service to them, just like I did the past 5 years.

Drove the beast today to meet up with Dimitri in Sac (eurosonic). Picked up a Spal fan bracket for the M. Now I need the sensor and fan so I can remove the fan clutch before...boom.

Love the mirrors - money well spent. I still don't get how the hole burnt itself in. I would feel quite concerned about a fire risk.

My former e90 is in good hands. The new owner (my father-in-law) got full coverage for it, while I only had liability. Also, he will go to the body shop to respray both bumpers. That will be around $600 for both.

This. The ones linked are the bare bushings that need to be pressed in to the old bushing mounts.

If you want to buy the bushings already pressed in to new mounts, here is the link for that part:

I gave my ZHP a much needed cleaning this afternoon before heading home from work.

Now I will take my ///M out and give it much needed cleaning. It's nice when the wheels are clean...gives the car a much cleaner look ;)

ZHP's use standard sport package bushings. Nothing special about them with regards to bushings. Not sure if they're the same as non-sport.

Buy the FCABs pressed in. They are not easy to get out of the carriers. A local shop even tried to get them out for me and failed. I went with powerflex, love them. I've heard great things about the Z4 FCABs as well (all rubber, not oil filled like stockers)

And on the topic of cleaning, nothing makes a car look cleaner than clean wheels. You can make a dirty car look clean just by cleaning the wheels, and you can make a clean car look dirty by leaving the wheels dirty.

Got my OE Pilkington glass with BMW logo installed. It still have waviness, which drives me crazy. I'm just gonna have to deal... ugh.
Also swapped my street pads back in. I still had my track pads in (PFC01 fronts and DTC60 rears), so I got tired of hearing people say "you need to fix your brakes" since they squealed excruciatingly loud every time I came to a stop. Wheels are diiiiiiirty (whole car is dirty) - can't wash it for 2 days says Safelite.

I disagree... it's been driving me crazy since I had the aftermarket one put in. I just want to know why an OE-branded windshield is doing this...
The reasons I'm not pursuing this further is because 1) I didn't pay out of pocket, yet somehow still ended up with OE glass despite my insurance denying it, and 2) Safelite has been amazing to deal with; their customer service has been fantastic and I don't think it's fair to them to try to get yet another glass since the super expensive OE one was on their dime (covered under warranty).

So the guy I bought the KW V1s from (that were trashed and he refunded me most of the money) didn't want them back as he's moving and now has an E90. So I'm shipping them to KW for a rebuild and to get the spring perches unstuck. Not sure if I'll install them or sell em once I get them back.
