Chipped the windshield today- glass was really good until then. Can glass repair be done on these if they have the rain sensor?
Yeah...they can fill it.

Today went to a BMW meet up at Sonic. On the drive there, I noticed a cable coming from the driver side bottom of the windshield. Come to find out when the auto glass guy replaced my windshield (and subsequently cracked it), he forgot to plug something in. I think it is the driver side wiper motor. Grrr.
I also figured out what is causing my voltage issues/swings (+/- .05 - 1.5V). It is the driver side memory module. I have been noticing for a while now the passenger side mirror would move when I unlock the car. I did a quick drive with the driver side seat disconnected and voltage stayed within 0.1V.

Yes sir. Took a lot longer than I thought, and didn't get to spread it out over multiple days like I wanted. The buddy that loaned me the air tools ended up hanging around and helping when I needed a second man.
Time to rest then ship it. Excited for this mod! Thanks for the encouragement and advice!

Claybarring is the biggest pain in the butt in the detailing process, IMO. I'm sooooo glad I don't have to use a PITA bar again.
The Autoscrub does just as good of a job as a claybar. They say it'll last 4 times as long as well, though that remains to be seen. The surface was just as smooth after using it and took a fraction of the time.
Picking up a couple of these after your review BP, I like the look of them better than the "mitt" as they are the same size as clay and I get into the smaller areas:

You probably won't save much time over a clay bar with the sponge. The pad that I bought for my Griots machine made the job super quick. If you don't have a machine then I suppose you still have advantages over a clay bar in a sense that if you drop it, you can still rinse it off and use it. You also save the time of not having to fold it over so often.

I bought this kit from Detailers Domain. It's the 6-inch Fine pad for use with a DA polisher. It makes mincemeat of manual tasks.

How do you like the Nanoskin Autoscrub as compared to good ole' fashion clay?
Kokesh introduced me to that thing like 2-3 years ago and I am hooked. So much better than claying, very similar results.

This past Memorial Day I replaced my worn sway bar end links with Meyle HD units and replaced the FCAB's with Powerflex polyurethanes.
Worn end links:
19944
19945
19946
New Meyle HDs:
19947
19948
19949
Front control arm bushings:
19933
19934
Polyurethanes:
19935
19936
Also did some miscellaneous items last week. New hood roundel, new M badges for the 135s and valve stem covers, and slapped on the black grills with M stripes.
Old roundel:
19938
New:
19939
Wheels before:
19940
After:
19941
19942
I desperately need to replace the roundels for the wheels and for the trunk. Even though the trunk emblem is in good shape, the one for the hood must be a new style where all the silver is raised and looks much sharper so I'll have to get the matching one for the trunk.
I'll be installing this bad boy that I just got last week along with the Stett Performance silicone intake boots this weekend.

They are an eeeeeasy job. I'm doing mine this weekend.
Today I replaced my rear left shock with the replacement Bilstein sent me. It took me a couple of hours because I've never done it before, but it was pretty easy overall.
Started the final touches for the BIG BASH next weekend!
Machined a coat of Best of Show wax on the Lids and hit the seats with some conditioner.

The sway bar end links were pretty easy. The hardest part was probably the bottom end connecting to the sway bar because the nut is facing away from you and there's not a whole lot of room to move a wrench down there or get a good angle.

Great work, I hate having this kind of issue but man is it gratifying when you find and fix it.
Rears are $60.
Let us know about quality. Otherwise you can splurge on the bmw performance Grills
Ok, so I ordered these guys:
http://www.banggood.com/Wholesale-02-05-BMW-E46-3-Series-4door-Black-Front-Grill-p-46271.html
Because it was ebay pricing, probably the same product, and has a US warehouse. Came in quickly, less than a week, which beats pretty much everything I have ever ordered from China on ebay by at least a week.
Popped them in tonight. I compared to the old grilles, and they look identical. Slat angle, shape, everything.
However, I do notice that the gaps aren't quite right when mounted.
Check the top edge of the passenger grille:
http://i.imgur.com/TLEX74Yl.jpg
Closer:
http://i.imgur.com/scsdKhRl.jpg
Looks worse than it is, but I definitely notice it under garage light. I'll let you know what it looks like when I get the diff back in.
Verdict: Fit not quite as good as OEM, but that was expected to be honest. Not bad for $38. I think I'll be able to live with it.
Xpost, info added to my thread as well. :)

Swapped brake lines for TMS (StopTech) stainless steel brake lines. Swapped clutch line with UUC's stainless steel line. Swapped OEM CDV with UUC's modified CDV. Attempted to flush/bleed brake system, but ran out of brake fluid in pressure bleeder (Motive pressure bleeder, Pentosin DOT4LV). I will use BMW brake fluid (part no. 81220142156) that's supposedly low viscosity when I reflush/bleed brake/clutch system tomorrow or Monday (depending on if the parts department is open).
Clockwise from top left: Motive pressure bleeder, TMS catch can, 1L of Pentosin DOT4LV brake fluid, UUC SS clutch line, UUC modified CDV, rear StopTech SS brake lines, front StopTech SS brake lines:

To be honest I would of been happy with either the Dynavin N6 or the Avin Avant 2, I choose to go with the Dynavin because I'm an iPhone user and I didn't want to have to constant ally be updating and modifying my radio in my car. I spend enough time modifying my iPhone (Jailbreaking etc) and I'm honestly not in the car enough to really take use of the android OS. I decided that the Dynavin has all of the features that I would expect out of a car radio, along with it being more oem like and potentially more stable over time.

Had the day off work, so got a few hours of maintenance in.
-M1 0W-40 and Mann Filter
-Redline MTL
-Redline diff fluid
-Brake fluid flush/bleed, ran basically a full liter through the system
Was going to put in my BMW short shifter and new ZHP knob, but ran short on time/energy for that. Had everything in the interior pulled, then ended up putting it all back haha.

That is almost guaranteed "gas light on". The only way that the light isn't on at 450 miles is if the light is LITERALLY about to come on.
This is bad for your fuel pumps, guys... please don't do it...
stephenkirsh
06-09-2015, 06:07 PM
Has that been proven? I mean... The logic makes sense that if there's not much fuel, the pump could get less resistance and then spin at a higher RPM than usual for a moment... But... Has that been proven an issue?
Sockethead
06-09-2015, 06:14 PM
The gas cools the fuel pump. Consistently low levels will mean the fuel pump will consistently run at a higher temperature
BMWCurves
06-09-2015, 06:17 PM
If a fuel pump runs on empty it can hurt it because it's cooled and lubricated by the gasoline in the gas tank. No gas = no cooling or lubrication. The other one you hear often is dirt and debris that settles goes into the pump which can cause issues. I'm not really sure how true that one is since most modern fuel pumps have a screen to block debris, but something to think about.
Rovert
06-09-2015, 07:41 PM
It takes super low fuel for the actual motor of the pump to be above the fuel. By then you'd be testing the pump starvation God. LOL. Dirt is a myth. When you thinking about what happens to the fuel when you drive, cornering, throttle, brakes just keep the fuel sloshing about inside the tank. If there were any dirt, it would settle after being still and get filtered on engine start. My pump and tank had no sign of visible particles floating about when I went in to change it after a much longer interval. Opening it up is what showed me how everything works!

A trooper as always. I am doing lots of early/preventative maintenance before I pass her off to my father for the next three years, sigh. Moving in three weeks and still in transition training until about 3 days prior to the move. Silly how you free time just evaporates. The dealer owes me a realignment next week so I am also having them do an oil change, because I am just flat out of free time. The ZHP will be in prime condition though.

Did almost the same thing. Installed the Stett Performance boots and found out my DISA was bad so I installed the GAS rebuild as soon as I could. Then installed the BMW Performance intake.
Lower boot installed:
20212
Snapped a hose on the f-connector when taking the upper boot back off to fix the DISA:
20213
Luckily it was just a rubber connector and not the actual hose or f-connector that broke; easy fix.
My bell crank was extremely warn and the flap was completely disconnected from it:
20214
Hard to tell against the black counter top, but you can see the whole top part of the bell crank was worn down compared to the new one.
20215
Fully operational DISA, pictured without the new seal which was also replaced:
20216
All buttoned up:
20217
20218
No more sputtering idle or SEL.

Yes. Start from the back. Once you get the first clip to unsnap you can probably do the rest by hand. Mine took an unusually light amount of pressure to unsnap.

I swapped out the stock 3.07 open rear diff for a 3.38 out of an auto. I'm sure that BMW has there reasons but this is how the ZHP should of come from the factory stock. I didn't want to go with the 3.46 out of the auto 325 since I still do a lot of highway driving. The 3.38 was a great compromise.

well, they have to make a lot of compromises when building a true 'road' car, and i think they did a stellar job as it is. but will the 3.46 make it more entertaining? certainly! i'm looking forward to installing mine as well. but i think as it moves the revs up ~300rpm, it definitely changes the highway behavior.

My car flooded from the Houston storm on memorial day. Not over the floorboards and into the cabin or engine, but soaked into the chassis and the carpets/insulation material from underneath. Had to file an insurance claim. Was without the car for almost two weeks. Fortunately the claim was approved and I only had to cover $500 deductible.
I also had the peeling A pillars replaced. Car is fine, driving great.
I had Hyundai Tucson cute ute as a rental lol. The biggest difference was the steering feel. When I got the zhp back it almost felt like I had no power steering. That electric rack was a featherweight.
Anybody else in Houston have any storm damage?

Drove the ZHP in the other gate at work this morning due to massive traffic jam at the main gate and allowed the security guard to drool at it. After looking my ZHP over he even asked me if I was interested in selling my beloved ZHP....my response was a typical "not anytime in the immediate future"...;) Then I smiled as I drove into the base where I work :)

Shouldn't the correct answer be "for the right price?"

Nice! Did you do it yourself? How long did they take? Care to elaborate on the differences? I've heard drastic differences while others don't have much difference at all.
M3 engine and trans mounts are a great upgrade over the factory mounts. The M3 engine mounts are a harder rubber and are still fluid filled and the Trans mounts are just a harder rubber.
I had done this upgrade to both of my cars and enjoy the added benefit of having less engine/trans movement. It just feels firmer with them. I would recommend them.

I did not, had a shop do it. I know the trans mounts can be done pretty quick, not sure about engine. Probably nothing crazy either.
Vas covered the differences pretty well but left out my number one priority in picking them: they'll last longer because they're harder. Hopefully they'll be good 150k instead of 100k. They're basically the same price as the non-m ones, so there's really no reason not to.
I did them myself with the car on jackstands. Trans mounts are super easy and engine mounts are not difficult at all.

I just used my Aluminium Floor Jack. You just have to jack it up high enough for the mounts to slide out. Did the trans mounts first and then the engine mounts.
One set of mounts had 98k on them and they were dry but not torn. The other set of stock mounts had 120k and they were dry, cracked and about to rip.

Replaced my ball joints and lower control arms yesterday with Turner Motorsport adjustable ones. I didn't have the BMW tool to remove the ball joint so I tried to make a few different things that didn't work and broke. Reason for the change was because a tow truck person strapped the hooks around the control arms instead of the tow hook like I put on for her.

When you're an "OE looking as possible" whore such as myself where an integrated solution is a must, yes, it's $2500 nice. Maybe when there's an aftermarket alternative that looks just as good and is just as well integrated, perhaps then we can knock the stock system.

Price out all of the individual pieces that make up the M-Sport package and you'll find it's an extremely good value if you're after those pieces.
M-Sport is a must for me. The regular bumpers leave a lot to be desired, so the M-Sport makes the car look the way it's supposed to. The sport seats are fantastic. The M-Sport steering wheel is fantastic. The wheels are nicer. The shifter is a short(er) shifter. Hell, if this was Europe, we'd have the fixed calipers with more pistons and bigger rotors as well.

I agree with you Kevin, I am not a cylinder snob, but does seem like stiff coin for a 4T. It did have the 8 speed auto, which I have to admit was really good. It kept the 4 pot in its sweet spot. I should caveat it with I pretty much just drove it in sport or sport +. In Economy it was very lethargic.

Not sure peter, waiting for ESS to receive it and let me know how they think this happened. My theory is that someone installed the end-caps on the manifold and started torquing them down while they were crooked, the orings then pinched in there and bent in the end caps.

Only F30/31 is getting a LCI refresh. The 4 series will have to wait probably another model year. Not sure if the 4 series will get the new motors for 2016 or if they'll wait for LCI to put the new motors in those.

This thread is probably not the right place for me to ask this question, but do you still use NCS Expert to do your coding or do you use something newer (ISTA?). Also, for sidemarkers off with headlights on, did you just code SIDEMARKER_US to 'nicht_aktiv' ?

NCS.

Yes. When this is coded, the turn signals will not illuminate at all unless they are activated for a turn. I prefer this setting for cars with angel eyes because the turn signals being lit dimly looks awkward to me with angel eyes on.
With my new config, the DRL overrides that setting until the headlights are turned on. PM me if you want more info.

Nope. There are other alternatives out there that auto manufacturers aren't done experimenting with / developing. 2025 won't be enough time to come up with a solution that fits the entire range of vehicles. It was also my understanding that making these batteries for electric vehicles is not environmentally friendly.

BMW will offer hybrids in all of their models, it won't be a complete transformation for another decade probably. They like to use the headlines "electrifying their lineup" etc but its really just hybrids, hello 1999. Technically my i3 is a hybrid, it is what it is, I love it, but they shouldn't be leading people to believe that BMW is going after Tesla when its not. They are just making hybrids like Toyota has been doing since 1999, they will offer non-hybrids in the same models.
I just paid nearly 55K for a car with 2 cylinders (Range Extender). Well, didn't pay for so much as that is what the MSRP was. Minus lots of credits and hopefully another credit at lease-end. A guy I worked with leased a Volt that he drove ~45 minutes each way to work. The financial numbers were awesome. If I had a long commute, I'd seriously consider something like a Volt or an i3. I'm not so interested in something like a Leaf because of the range and the appearance, and I have zero interest in a Prius because they're just plain unappealing in every single way other than efficiency.
Speaking of appearance, that's something that's really bugging me about the current crop of hybrid/electrics. Why, oh why do the manufacturers building an electric or hybrid-electric car all have to build that technology into some exclusive quirky platform? No disrespect intended, but the i3 has the "goofy" look compared to the rest of the lineup. It's like they said, "OK, for this electric, let's build something that looks like it came from Tokyo... Or outer space." WTH? Same with the Leaf... Nissan builds some fairly attractive cars. Why did the Leaf have to look like a butt plug or something? The Prius is... Gag. The Volt is actually one of the more attractive to me, which is odd, because I'm not much of a fan of GM these days, with a few notable exceptions.
Have the marketing propeller-heads at all these companies decided that people will buy a hybrid-electric car only if it looks goofy and not like a "traditional" car? Why can't we buy the Prius running gear in a form factor more like the FR-S or even the Corolla for that matter? Anything would be better than the Prius! Why can't you buy the Leaf drivetrain in a Versa or a Juke? Why does wanting to buy an efficient and advanced-propulsion car mean you have to completely give up on sporty, athletic, or fun look/feel? Well, unless you spend $100k+ on a Tesla, that is. It's like the the manufacturers have just given up and ceded the "fun" market to Tesla, and all design their electric cars to sell only to the Ed Begley, Jr types of the world.
</rant>
I do have to say, your i3 is kind of neat looking. The black and charcoal really helps tame the crazy design and sort of hides some things like the rear-door hip-line, and the wheels are much better than what I've seen. I'll have to go look at another one in person. It's growing on me.

I do have to say, your i3 is kind of neat looking. The black and charcoal really helps tame the crazy design and sort of hides some things like the rear-door hip-line, and the wheels are much better than what I've seen. I'll have to go look at another one in person. It's growing on me.

They make them look weird because they don't want YOU to buy it. They want non-bmw owners to buy it. It's a way of attracting new customers.
If it's weird, people want to know what it is. If it's just another sedan, nobody would pay a second look.

i totally agree with your first statement. they throw JUST ENOUGH "bmw styling" in there to keep a BMW crowd but i think its heavily geared toward the millennials and new owner market.

I have to say, while I have been really quiet around here lately, I really enjoy the discussion over the (a) new BMWs and their prices, and (b) the electric/hybrid cars and their aesthetics... I'd like to chime in, especially on the first part. Part of the reason OEM navigation costs $2500 in the new BMWs is because its a LOT more than just navigation. The integration is perfect as BP stated, and the big things are BMW Assist and Bluetooth, along with other stuff as well. All of the new cars come with the iDrive and screen, but the screen is bigger and has more features if you buy the navigation package, and the iDrive controller also gets bigger, as it now has a touchpad on top (our 2014 328d had this, it was impressive). So, $2500 is getting you a lot more than "just navigation"...
As for M Sport. Well, two things here. Like BP said, you get a lot more than just aesthetics. Bumpers, wheels, sport seats, sport suspension, and more... And the biggest thing, you get effing ///M badges all over the place. And well, we've seen that people go insane for the ///M badge. Sadly, most people don't care about the car, just the badge, which makes the M Sport package a perfect hook for the large majority of car "enthusiasts". Look at how many times you see a ZHP posted on Craigslist where they say "M package" or something like that. That stupid badge sells more BMW shit than any inline 6 cylinder engine or track tuned suspension. I think this is a lot more evident where I live, perhaps why I can see BMWs decision to push the M Sport package, and price it so high (which honestly I don't think is THAT high). People in South Florida are so insanely image driven, they always have to have the newest and coolest cars, with all sorts of insanely expensive mods. Hell, we don't even have good driving roads down there. But, people have to own the most expensive BMWs with all the cool mods, right away. So, they pay for the packages, the options, all that stuff.
Yes, $55K may sound like a lot for an i3, but to be honest, the technology and amenities in the new BMWs is pretty staggering. That car has won a ton of awards already, clearly showing it is an impressive car. Yes, that same $55K could buy you 2 or even 3 E46 M3s, but those cars are old and the technology is getting tired. Hell, even the iDrive unit in my two vehicles is quite noticeably old and outdated compared to the new BMW models...
Anyway, I love all the cars, not trying to hate on any one opinion or vehicle. I've never driven an E46 M3, but I feel like I want to buy one, to have a project, and because I can't afford to mod the two I have now! Yet, I still lust after the brand new F85 X5///M and F10 ///M5. My buddy just bought a '14 M5 with competition package, can't wait to drive it when I get home... :biggrin

My rubber thingy broke too. They don't sell it. Nobody does. My mechanic got me a different bushing thing that still fit it. I THINK it was off of a 7 series power steering reservoir bushing thingy.
Also, Turner sells the power steering feeder hose for about $150.

Gave it a post road trip bath and started checking boxes off my service log. Gonna need another oil change, time to install the FCAB's, aaaand I felt the clutch slipping while home so it's definitely time to order a new clutch. Looks like I'll be parking the car for awhile. On the plus side, the new organic lightweight clutch kit from UUC isn't nearly as expensive as I thought it was going to be.

Ouch for 55k on an i3.
Yeah, they can be had for much less, mine has every option available. With a lease you only initially pay depreciation on the negotiated price (nowhere near $55k) so if an option costs $10,000, for example, I'm only paying for $3500 of that option over the course of two years. The cool thing about it is that if the residual is off, to the good or to the bad, I get to negotiate again at the end of the lease. If the car is worth more than $36k, I can keep it at our agree price, or trade it and take the extra trade to the next vehicle. If the car is worth less than $36k I can attempt to negotiate a lower price or walk away.

I'm taking full time duties on the E91 and passing the Honda over to Short Round (yes small Asian jokes are my wife's favorite).
Ordering up some goodies to get her into proper shape.
First up will be:
Msport perforated leather steering wheel/airbag
Msport perforated leather ebrake handle
BMW Performance auto shift knob
Coilovers or springs/struts - needs a refresh anyway but undecided on route to take
BMW performance rear bumper/diffuser - current it banged up badly and GetBMWparts Evan is hooking me up ;)
Catback Exhaust (either BMW performance or AA signature)
Front splitters
Tints
Tuning!
Later down the road I might do the 330i intake manifold upgrade and some front sport seats when i find a set for the right price in good shape (tan interior also).

Gag. I chose the grey, Laurel Grey, because I thought it was the least obnoxious choice with all of the black on the car (hood, CFRP roof, hatch, etc). The tinted windows help too, thanks. I do agree that most EV's look awful, I thought the i3 was the best choice for me (RWD, BMW, Range Extender, etc, etc). Its not a perfect car by any means, I have yet to see one of those be built, but its great for me, the more I drive it the more I love it. Someone, I have no idea who or when, once said that if people like to drive a car, even if its ugly, they will fall in love with it. Maybe the guy that made the Beatle/Bug, I don't exactly recall but the i3 is one of those cars. I've been watching the car since concept and it has just completely grown on me even before I first drove one. I don't think I'll ever buy another ICE vehicle. We were seriously looking to replace my better half's CRV with either a new CRV, the upcoming x1, possibly a CPO x3, something, but after nearly 60 days of i3 ownership we are going to hold out until someone makes an EV-SAV, I hope its BMW. The hybrid x1 or x3 might be a choice, x3 might be out of our price range depending on rebates, even if it only ~20 mile EV only capability my better half could still drive too and from work all week using no fuel.
I agree, while you have the best looking i3 possible i cant believe its 55k. Could get two e46 Ms for that, or a REALLY NICE swapped e30 M, or a nice audi, or a really nice porsche, or lots of hookers and blow.
Its all good, in the end I hope to have only spent about $30k, its scary but I got the car for under invoice before a $4875 lease rebate and then I'm going to negotiate the buy out at lease end. One of the things that holds people back from EV's is the complicated buying process, and I agree I went back and forth between lease and owners choice (purchase type of lease).
They make them look weird because they don't want YOU to buy it. They want non-bmw owners to buy it. It's a way of attracting new customers.
If it's weird, people want to know what it is. If it's just another sedan, nobody would pay a second look.
Actually you would be surprised on the i3 forums how many e46 M, e9X M and other BMW owners are jumping into i3's. Lots of non e46 M guys too, I was so surprised myself.

The tech on the i3 is insane, such a jump from the ZHP. $55k is every single option including metallic paint, they start at much less, but also have much less content. Since I haven't bought a new car since 2004 nor a new to me car since 2006 (ZHP) I figured I'd go big or just stick with what I had. I was prompted to buy an i3 because they were running insane money off left-ver 2014's, like $7500+ off. I missed getting a white one (my second choice) by about 48 hours. I still got a little more than 1/2 of $7500 off my 2015 and it was on the boat still when I struck the deal. I think it had 9 miles on it at delivery. It hadn't been driven all over like the white 2014.

Today, having sold the Dynavin D99+ out of my 05 convertible, I spent the morning removing the radio and all the cables associated with it...especially the long antenna and Fakra extender cables that take the connections from the trunk of the vehicle to the console area. I got the radio boxed up and mailed off as planned. Also, as planned, I came up with my temporary solution to being radio-less until the new unit arrives....I figured I'd rock the totally ghetto look....because....why not!!!:cool
