Not mine, but I swapped out the Final Stage Unit (FSR) in my father's E39 540i today. His fan had been acting erratically for the last 6 months and really went down hill in the last few weeks. Wasn't too much of an issue but it's been getting hotter so I bought one and swapped it out. Seems to have solved the problem.

Ordered ARP rod bolts, new oil check valve, oil pump, bottom end gasket set, head studs and other misc. All from thebmwparts store except the ARP stuff, ah the joys of building an engine.. lol. Should be worth it in the end.

Drove about 42 miles yesterday, 0 gallons of fuel used. WOOT! Car charged overnight on 110v and was at 100% this morning.

Will be repeating today, better half and I are dog/cat/fish/house sitting for the future mother in law, her house is about 20 miles from work. This is atypical for us, my usual commute is 2.2 miles one-way. We decided to car-pool because we work about 4 miles apart and the i3 can be driven and no fuel used.

Oh, and I found and bought some clear paint protectors that go behind the door handles. Only $2.00 for 4 of them. My ZHP wasn't really scratched that bad, but our honda CRV is, I'd rather not take the chances on the i3, plus it was only $2.00 if it looks like crap I'll just throw them away. Still hunting for a similar protector for the top of the rear bumper when the hatch is open. We've almost had damage done in just the 4 days we've owned it. BMW should have some kind of protector stock in that location.

Check xpel website. Had a order for a 3m pro series full kit for a x5m. Usually the xpel templates are used as they are more accurate and the place I deal with just cut them as needed.

Well, not what I did but, rather, what was done to my 330Ci today...

DOT is repaving a section of interstate where my exit is in the middle of the length of highway. DOT is in the process of grinding off the first few inches of asphalt and plenty of "marbles" in the untraveled sections. Some assclown in a G35 coupe decides to merge way too late, took to using what was left of the breakdown lane and kicked a decent sized marble up. The marble contacted lower center of the L side of the windshield, under the wiper arm. Nice dual crack up to the lower 1/3 centerline of the glass.

Time for new glass anyway. 233k miles on the original. Waiting until DOT is done before bringing it in for glass replacement.

Check with Lamin-x. They sell bumper protection for a lot of cars. If they don't list it, I'd call and ask - they may want you to be the guinea pig!

Thanks for the suggestion!

See, this is why I'll still be on this board even though I no longer own a ZHP, awesome members that are very helpful.

Today I attempted the "free" rear fog lamp push button mod that can be done on some F cars, namely the f30 which the i01 (i3) shares a lot of stuff with. Unfortunately the insides are different. This might be MY2015 difference or an i01 difference, not sure. The two panels look identical though so it is tempting to buy a used one off of eBay and try the mod that way. Since the car is technically "leased" then I could always revert to stock if I don't end up buying it (highly unlikely). They are selling for about $60 on ebay, only bad thing is that it has the button for the front fog lights as well which the i01 does not have. Thinking about doing some coding today, but it is rather warm in the garage and the lawncare people are outside doing work. For as small as our houses and lots are they take all freaking day to get the job done. Its too bad they don't go house to house, but I guess that would take even longer.

EDIT: Found XPel on Amazon.com, going to give it some thought weather to go clear or with their black that has a slight texture to it. Climbed up in the attic and found a bunch of e46 parts. I need to get them sold and/or in the pay it forward thread, ugh, no time. Also found my smoked vinyl for the front and rear wheel-arch markers on the i3, might even try to smoke the side mirror side-markers with it. Also adjusted the tennis ball in the garage for backing the car in. It is so much shorter than the e46. I swear its not much smaller inside though, or doesn't feel like it.

EDIT: Also, to my surprise, my blend mount from the ZHP installed in the i3 perfectly, just hope the large plastic piece on the windshield that encloses the front camera won't interfere with my passport 8500. Doubtful though, that thing has some great range.

Tried to figure out my brake squeak on 323. No luck. Decided to see what 12/10 spacers looked like on it. Looked great, but damn if the rear bolts were about 1-2 mm too long. Hitting parking brake assy, so I removed them. I also raised the rear up 1/4" in preps for our road trip later this month. http://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/07/c76c15d9fbd154cc1e654eac4ea286a8.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/07/f42af76cd3486395c90e7323e1066d42.jpghttp://images.tapatalk-cdn.com/15/05/07/75b8f2e0beee4751c2b0b00909f29296.jpg

That one was just a standard M3-style knob. The actual OE M3 knob has the leather boot integrated with the shifter. The ZHP knob feels so much better though.

Today I got around to doing some needed maitinence.

Last week I replaced the VCG, the sparkplugs, did an oil change along with installing a new drain lug, and detailed the car.

Today I installed new front and rear brake pads, front and rear brake pad wear indicator sensors, front and rear rotors, and I also installed new front sway bar end links.

Also my BSW stage 1 speakers came in today so I'll be starting the install tonight.

The car is finally coming along

Finally got my MINI roadworthy again. In January I started replacing the clutch and flywheel (which then lead to alternator, belt tensioner, idler pulley, wheel hub, radiator hoses, power steering line, and probably a dozen other things). Finally got it back together in March and two weeks later the power steering pump burned up. Today I finished putting in a used pump (which was damaged in shipping, so JB Weld and super glue to the rescue), the other power steering line, wiring harness for the pump (old one melted in the fire). Successful test drive, nothing smoking, so massive success. Then I found the 3rd brake light lens is gone, and my ZHP is leaking something.

New steering rack for the ZHP will be here on Monday.

Dane is right. Clay barring removes some paint oxidation and imbedded dirt. You got to use a good compound and clean cutting pads to remove the light paint scratches, then use a good wax to fill everything left behind in. It's a lot of work but in the end you have a stunning looking car like what you see in Dane's sig :thumbsup

When the paint surface has been clay barred, it will have that velvety smooth feel to it... and yes, well worth the effort to do right. Be forewarned though, if you never clay barred your car then I suggest you do some research on how to properly clay bar the car. If done improperly, you can easily wreck the finish of your car.

I'm not worried about swirls. I don't have any on my car that I have seen, but have yet to give her a good wash and wax. I just want to make the paint look better than 12 years old.
I hate using an orbital buffer though. I have done paint work in the past and even wet sanded and buffed out gel coats on boats. I just always have that fear of swirling the paint. I have never barred though.

Used the pre-conditioning feature on the i3 for the first time on my short trip to work tonight. You might still be able to get some customer loyalty money from BMW. I spoke last week with someone in BMWUSA HQ. If I sold any of my BMW products and purchased a new or CPO one from a dealership and then presented BMWUSA with the relevant bills of sale, they'd give me $2500. The BSW kit is nice, it's nothing crazy, I was just looking for something that would just work without modification and/or adapters and that's just what the BSW is.

The speakers are nice, to be honest they don't sound much different from the factory HK system, maybe a little it better but it's not too noticeable.

It's 1000x better than blown out Speakers though, my factory HK (paper) speakers blew out.

For anyone who is looking to get rid of factory paper speakers, however, they are looking for a straight plug-n-play setup, BSW is a great option. Pricey but for me it was worth it.

Nothing really. Maybe a bit of pickup in the mid range but I would bet it is just a placebo effect. It sounds pretty good but I wish it were louder!

The BSW speakers do sound more crisp ill give them that for sure. They look very high quality, and I have no doubt that they will last the life of the car compared to the factory paper speakers. I really liked my alpine setup in my old car, it was outstanding, I was used to that setup. However, the BSW speakers sound just right for this car, im not looking to do anything crazy, I just want good sound and quality speakers and they fulfill my desire.

I learned the process from a DIY and found it to be easier than I thought!

Also washed the car for the ice cream social the CT Valley Chapter has during the warner months. Probably a quarter of the cars there were pristine E30 M3's. Lol

It's really easy, just remove the rear wheels, removed the rear calipers/rotors, and turn the adjustment knob with a screwdriver. You want to expand the shoes so that the rotor fits on snug. Once both sides are adjusted, put the rotors back on, and test the e-brake.

It's really easy once you look at it yourself, very easy :)

How did you do it? From my understanding that's the only proper way to adjust the e-brake

Johal E32
05-14-2015, 09:16 PM
You can pull the ebrake boot and adjust from there

az3579
05-15-2015, 07:02 AM
To do it properly you should do it from both the adjustment knob and the handbrake nuts.

Taking the rear calipers and rotors off is way easier. I don't know how people do it without; getting at the adjustment wheel through a tiny little lug hole proved nearly impossible for me.

Loosen the nuts at the handbrake (take off/loosen the boot and pull the handbrake up a little to get at the nuts. Take rear wheels, calipers, and rotors off. Tighten the adjustment wheel by turning the cogs towards the FRONT of the car (for left side, turn the cogs DOWN and for right side, turn the cogs UP). Tighten them a few clicks at a time until you have a harder time putting the rotor on, then loosen until the rotor slides right on with minimal effort. I backed mine off by loosening about 5 turns once the rotor slid on easily. Once it's there, tighten the nuts on the handbrake. I tightened the nuts until the car was held by the parking brake after 4-5 clicks and the lever was firm by the 3-4th click.

Vas
05-15-2015, 07:08 AM
I was able to get to it through the lug hole. It was not easy but possible.

Rovert
05-15-2015, 01:18 PM
^ Yep that's what I do. I just remove one lug nut without taking the wheel off. I'm done adjusting quickly once I figure out which way to get at that crazy cog back there. LOL

Still looks gorgeous! I really need to do mine. I tend to do it during the summer when I have a little more free time and rain isn't as much of a possibility. I know exactly what you mean about your back though. I sometimes use a rolling office chair to assist when I'm doing the sides.

As for me, my Bimmian painted bumper reflectors came in today so I swapped them out pretty quick using a wide plastic trim removal tool rather than the suggested screw driver that I'm very confident would scratch the paint. Color matches perfectly and I think looks much better than the amber reflectors. Not bad.

This is more of what my ZHP did to me...

I have had the issue of clunk from the rear end of the car at on and off throttle in low gears since I bought the car... Got it inspected and I was told it was the left axle which has a bad CV joint... Have not had the time to get it fixed/replace... So today, I stop at an intersection and when I start to get going again, I hear a loud thud, I mean really loud... Heard it again at the next few intersections... Went to work driving slowly and holding my breath and thinking if I had a humongous crack at the subframe bolting location... Once I reach the office parking lot, I try to replicate it by getting on and off the throttle but i heard nothing.... Not sure what caused it... So my ZHP almost made me sh!t in my pants today....

Quick Question- I am dying for face lift black grills but I'm having trouble finding them! Can someone lead me in the right direction please!!!

There are a bunch, do you want gloss or matte black?

I have the BMW Performance Piano Black Grilles and I love the look, but they are a bit pricey (just north of $100 at ECS). However, they are an exact swap for our OEM chrome ones in terms of shape and number of slats, etc. They also match the shadowline trim perfectly. Their part numbers are:

Left - 51132158537
Right - 51132158538

Other grilles may have a slightly different shape and number of slats but they tend to be cheaper.

I'd stay away from the eBay ones. They tend to be very loose. I had to hot glue the ones we got for our old e53 to get them to stay in. I got the OEM black ones.... worth every penny.

Shawn, the ZHP is officially back to daily driving duties as of today... yes, the rear extenders make adjustment very easy since I won't have to pull the covers out of the way to adjust them. If anyone is using BC Racing coilovers, I highly recommend getting them. They're under $40 for the set and well worth getting :thumbsup

Performed an oil change on the Range Rover this afternoon. Pretty simple when you can lift the car into off-road mode and put jacks under the frame and then go from there. Hardest part is getting to the filter when is below a belly pan and stuffed between power steering hoses. Noticed that the hood shock was out so had to use a piece of PVC to hold it open for me...then I remembered BMW and LR share many parts and I had an extra shock from my OEM M3 trunk lid. Perfect fit and worked like a charm. I removed one of my trunk shocks when going to the CF CSL lid which is why I had the extra on hand. I'll be purchasing two new ones for the Range so it's back to normal operation.

yep. Ground Control makes a revalved rear for the E46 that is top-adjust.

also, the 80's porsche 911 koni yellow rears are almost dimensionally identical (about 20mm shorter, which actually is advantageous), and are top-adjust. we can use those too.

New steering rack and high-pressure line went in over the weekend; pretty sure the fluid had never been changed in 116k miles. :-( New control arms have been ordered and will hopefully go in next weekend. I'm chasing a bit of looseness in the steering, but this car will see track duty and I've just learned control arms are considered wear items…

If all the things all you guys do to your cars were added up to one car per week of these posts. There'd be a pretty perfect car being birthed from ZHPMafia every week.

Are you saying that our cars are not perfect already...? :shift

Nope. Someone always needs a polish, a new water pump, an oil change, or a vacuum. LOL

Replaced the rear brake wear sensor. Accidentally broke it while I was painting my calipers

Today the ZHP was supposed to have the windshield replaced after two rescheduled appointments. Found out while sealing the glass and pressing the seal around the windshield they cracked the glass. It will take another appointment (next week) to get new glass put in.

Also noticed I got PPG glass and not plinkington glass. Will need to call the company tomorrow and get that fixed.

Actually yesterday. Used Nanoskin Autoscrub on the hood, front bumper, front fenders, roof, and top of the trunk lid yesterday. Polished and sealed all those panels. Was too beat to finish.

Also had to buy a new license plate backing plate. THIRTY SIX DOLLARS at the dealer. Holy shit!

How do you like the Nanoskin Autoscrub as compared to good ole' fashion clay?

Claybarring is the biggest pain in the butt in the detailing process, IMO. I'm sooooo glad I don't have to use a PITA bar again.

The Autoscrub does just as good of a job as a claybar. They say it'll last 4 times as long as well, though that remains to be seen. The surface was just as smooth after using it and took a fraction of the time.

Chipped the windshield today- glass was really good until then. Can glass repair be done on these if they have the rain sensor?
