Not everyone has to like them, chrome definitely works on some cars. Personally, its not for me, so black is the only way. I have actually been back and forth for a couple days about the gloss black or the BMW "Edition" grills (the only OEM ones available) that are a black chrome. Its a cool look, but plain gloss black matches the shadowline trim better, so I went with that... :)

I'd prefer gloss over matte.
My issue is that solid black grill loses the detail of the individual fins. I don't like that.
My car has the 325 grilles, chrome edge and black fins. I like that over the chrome on chrome, which is just too much chrome!

While I do think this is a cool look, I'm not sure its for me. I think I'm going to stick with the all gloss black, like what I've ordered. I will be checking fitment and quality of the pieces I ordered from iND, and if I don't like it, I'll return them and get the OEM ones locally. We'll see.. All parts arrive on Wednesday, but I'll be going out of town tomorrow for the week.

Three things left to weld. Two braces that triangulate the front frame rails to the unibody. The frame rails were only meant to handle about 130 or less hp and 110 or less tqs. I am looking to triple that (250hp and at least 200tqs at wheels)

If you ever have the time to do it, take the wheels off, use your favorite wheel cleaner and try to get them as clean as possible. Then use a clay bar on them and wax. After that, washing will be MUCH easier. Especially if you invest in a good wheel brush! It is a long process but if you care enough, it's worth it.

M3: I actually did some of what was mentioned above... I only got the two front wheels done, but I took them off, clean them as best as I could. I then took my Griot's polisher and hit them with some Meguiar's Ultimate Compound. This removed the heavy stains and marks on the inside. After this, I swapped to a medium polishing pad and used some Meguiars Ultimate liquid wax to give them a nice coat. I've never really waxed wheels before, but I figure, its painted metal, can't be too much different than the car itself! :) The results were excellent, interested to see how well they clean next time. The beauty of this process was that I did the left front wheel first. When I cleaned the right front, I noticed that the wheel did not have a single mark on it ANYWHERE... Clearly the wheel has been replaced, which is awesome, once I cleaned it and waxed it, it looked like it had just come out of the box. That made me happy.

Yesterday, ordered some random clips I broke while re-sealing the vapor barriers, also the front door was missing a short screw and the rear door was missing the long screw. Also broke one of the two clips for the trim around the LCM. All of that ordered.
Today, found a local buyer for the angel eyes and pending local buyer for the roof-rack/fairing and first aid box. Also located two i3's loaded up like I want in Atlanta. Maybe I need to push this sale a little more quickly. A local guy asked for more info and pictures of the car, but I'm not sure how serious he is. Still have a guy on e46f from NC interested too.

To each their own, I plan to go with Laurel Grey, it is a dark grey metallic and keeps the two-tone of the car from being a bit obnoxious.

Messed around with the coils again today. Pretty pissed off because no matter what I do I can't seem to get the drivers and passengers sides to match up right. And I ruined my alignment I got yesterday.....
Edit: will adjusting my camber mess with my toe at all? Dumb question but I figured I'd ask. After I got my alignment done yesterday I noticed my passengers side tired was sticking out WAY further than the drivers. Nearly rubbing on the fender. measured from center of the cap to the fender and both were at about 12 1/2 but there was definitely a lot more positive camber on the passengers side..

Start off by ensure all of your "adjustables" are the same height.
Drive the car for a while to let everything settle out.
Then measure from center of fender lip down to bottom edge of rim. Write down data for all 4 corners. If your with .25" your fine unless you're like me and you want everything close to exact.
If your data shows you're way off, pull wheel and adjust height, etc....
Last step....get alignment.

Ready to weld up unneeded holes. Cut radiator hole a little larger for the new larger radiator. Weld in braces. Then prep for paint. Getting down to the wire on whether to change color or not

Thanks Dane! Yeah unfortunately I'm extremely ocd and it's driving me insane. The rear is good to go but the front is what's messing with my head. I initially had the adjusters set to the same height, but the left front was 3/4" too high. I'll mess around with it more today

shawn, when you adjust the LF it will affect the RR... and vice-versa. it makes coilover height adjustment a tedious process!

Saw an I3 in the wild. They are not for me, but they are kinda techno cool in a way. Sad to see your ZHP go, but enjoy your I3.

Maybe I'm getting old? I don't know, the car scene just doesn't interest me as much as it used to. Maybe it will come back with a vengeance in a few years, or later in life. At this stage in my life I prefer tech stuff, maybe I'm becoming a nerd, working on my house, playing with my dogs and traveling.
Saw an I3 being torn apart by the dealer (Vista BMW) when I took my SOs E39 to a complimentary top-down inspection. I3 replacing all wiring harness eaten up by rodents/mice. Insurance paying for the $20K damage.
Thats nuts! Never heard of anything like that before. I would probably unload that car quick afterwards.
Wow! That's pretty bad.
My mechanic said that mice seem to love BMW wires.
NOTED! I'll be sure to get my garage sealed up stat, I've got all the stuff in my cart on amazon, new bottom seal, a rubber threshold, insulation kit and new seal for around the door. We don't really have any mice issues though that I am aware of, unless the river is high, I live on an island on the side of the Mississippi River.
I drove an i3 loaner when I got my airbag recalled.
It was a stripped model obviously. Very peppy I must say! Cool car, not for me, but I'm sure many love it for its intended purpose.
When we did the i3 event drive, we were in a mid-range decently loaded i3 with sunroof (sunroof not available in the US *MAD FACE*), then when I took one home for an extended test drive I got a super base model. I'm looking at the top of the line Terra package with all options, well, I don't really care if it has updated audio or not, prefer it to not actually.
----
Drove it to work! Had some decent interest on the car but it has died off already, been looking at nice 50% used Pilot Super Sports on eBay, thinking about going ahead and getting the car back on its OEM wheels. Then sell the VMR's. Anyone have any idea what a used set of 19" VMR V710's in good condition with nearly new Pilot Super Sports are worth? I paid $2300 new, but they have some rash and mileage on them now.
Also looking at alternative options to going ahead and getting the i3. Also considering waiting another year, its a gamble, if they don't lower production for the US, then they will have a surplus of 2015's next year in 2016. The lease rate is just too insanely low not to consider it now though.

My mechanic and the dealer consulted with a pest control company. The best way to avoid rodents/mice is to lay out in various areas moth balls. They hate the smell.

Researching trade values vs private party values, wow, what a difference. How can Edmunds say my car is only worth $4400 trade, $5600 private party, yet the two lowest cars private party I found on auto tempest had more miles and less options asking $7k? Also found a white 2003 with 53k for $18,500. WTF?
So much win in this thread. I feel weak sauce for installing headers now.

If you're going to keep it a long time then whey don't you buy it?
A "deal" on a lease of all things is hardly a deal for someone that wants to keep the car. Buying it out at the end of the lease costs more than just buying it outright, doesn't it?

Most likely I would buy it at the end of the lease. Leasing can be good and bad, depends on how/if you work the system. To make numbers easy, lets say I buy one for $50k, I get $10k off of the car and in 3 years the car will be worth 50% ($25k). For the lease term I will pay the difference ($15k) plus interest just like any other loan plus tax just like any car purchase. At the end of the lease, if they have their residuals wrong (happens from time to time, could very well happen on such a car as the i3) say similar cars are selling for $20k not $25k, then I can negotiate a lower price. Essentially buying a used car from myself instead of someone else. If they have their numbers wrong the other way, say similar cars are selling for $32k, if you trade it in before the lease is up (I can't remember how many weeks/months out, there is a deadline) and a dealer offers you more than what your residual is, lets say they offer $30k, then you have $5k down on your next vehicle. Yes, it takes longer in the end (lease term 24-36 months plus whatever to finance the remaining 20-25k 36-60 months), but if you can't afford a $50k car over a typical car buying term (3-5 years) leasing is a good way to get into something you otherwise wouldn't be able to.
Let me ask you this, would you rather buy a high end car that was previously owned by a stranger? Or from yourself?
Everybody seems to have their own opinion on leasing VS buying, this is just my opinion. Yes, sometimes with higher lease rates you end up paying more interest and in that situation buying might be a better option, but this lease rate works out to about 3%, pretty decent. I think the lowest new car rate I can get from my credit union is 2.45%.

Not yet, but my local dealer happened to call me about 5 minutes ago. He seems to think he can get one of the two 2014's from ATL and still do nearly the same deal except an additional shipping charge. A friend of mine that works at a used lot says he ships cars back from ATL auctions for $200 all the time. I'm sure the dealer will try to inflate by a factor of 2 or 3, but I'm willing to give them a shot at making it happen. Even with the range extender a trip back from ATL seems extreme, we have family in Nashville so we could stay the night there coming back but stopping to charge every 2 hours or so (to charge for 3-5 hours depending on the charging station, fast chargers are not that common in small towns yet) would just take forever. Unlike the EU i3 REx, the US REx only comes on when you get low on charge. The EU model you can kick it on whenever you want to charge back up the battery, at some point you would still have to charge but theoretically doing this would extend your range as long as you kept the REx full of fuel. It just takes some coding to do, but I don't have a Windoze computer to code with and I've never coded before so I don't want to try that after driving it off the dealer lot.
I am probably going to go ahead and pull some funds to make the deal happen weather the ZHP sells to the potential owner or not. Its in an account with no fee's or penalties for pulling it out (Roth IRA) and the amount pulled out, I would be able to replace within the same calendar year and not max out with what I put in there monthly. Potential new owner texted me at 8:03 his time and he had already called the bank and got them going on it. He actually just texted me again as I am writing this and says it looks to be fully approved by tomorrow.

So I threw the new tires on the car today. I bought Mickey Thompson Street Comps for it. Running 235/40 all the way around. 300 tread wear rating. The sidewalls are very stiff but the extra meat feel a LOT better than stock setup. I'll do a full review after I get a few hundred miles on them. I'll have to drive easy till then anyways. They still have a glaze on them so I'll have to let that wear off. If they hold up to their reputation then this should be some fun rubber.

You'll need to do more prep than that... The battery terminal block on the passenger side needs to be relocated, typically into the void space behind the strut. Then it'll fit perfectly... Below is a pic of my old ZHP. First you can see the relocated battery terminal, and then a pic of the final install.

While searching for a few parts for my Cherokee, I befriended two gents trying to save an ///M engine, bumper, and a few other things out of an E36. Spent a few hours trying to get everything out. I had to leave due to work but I hope they saved the engine from distruction. Felt good to help them out!

Today I knocked off replacing the spark plugs, cabin air filter, intake air filter, AC tensioner pulley, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, serpentine belt, AC belt, cooling system refresh (upper/lower/core hoses, thermostat, water pump, radiator, coolant level sensor, coolant temp sensor). I still have to reattach the upper hose to the expansion tank and radiator inlet, it's proved to be incredibly difficult. Then I have to bleed the cooling system and onto changing all fluids front to back tomorrow (oil, transmission fluid, differential fluid, power steering fluid). So far so good though!

Well, went to Botond's secret lair today. Picked up some calipers, troubleshot my R side headlight not working. BP was gracious enough, offering to swap parts to isolate the problem but with headlights removed, my AL and his ZKW were no bueno. Alas, must have been a loose connection that I was able fix unknowingly when I reassembled everything. Had lunch, washed cars and sat around BSing. Oh, and traded BP's alcantara shift and ebrake boots for my leather ones... He's into leather, I don't judge.
To quote the great philosopher of our time, Ice Cube, "Today was a good day..."
Don't worry, BP. I won't tell anyone about you missing a shift when you went for the pass around me on the Milford connector...

More updates... (Joop has been busy these past few days!)
I've really been trying to get the X5 cleaned up before I go back out to sea again. I haven't detailed it at all since we bought it back in September, so I'm slowly doing a lot of things. Yesterday I vacuumed the interior and put the floor mats through the wash (worked really well!!). Then I used interior protectant and wiped down all of the doors, center console, dash, etc. I was surprised that the stuff really helped to polish up the piano black trim. After that, I taped off and polished the headlights as they had some light scratches and haze. Not perfect, but pretty damn close without wet sanding.
Today I plan to start on the paint, clay bar, polish, and then wax... Its going to be a long day...
Oh, and my OBD scanner showed up, scanned for codes, found P0456 again. So, emailed my parts guy and asked him to get me a new gas cap. Picking that, and black grills up for the M3 tomorrow. :thumbsup

Driving back to the office from lunch, my car started running roughly and the SES light came on. Drove straight to my indy, who diagnosed a cylinder 3 misfire. He was absolutely swamped yesterday, and asked whether I could leave the car. I assumed he was going to need a couple of days to get to it, and said sure I could leave it with him. His response? "Probably an ignition coil, I can get that done by the end of the day." Sure enough, I picked up the car at closing time, had a nice visit with the owner and a few of the techs, and drove home. I count myself a lucky guy to have a mechanic I trust, and one who understands good customer service.

Yeah DIY. Took about 30-45 minutes taking my time. Install is simple and straight-forward. Just need a magnet to hold the clip that secures the shifter to the rod at the bottom. Did not get a chance to drive the car yet though. But the biggest difference is shifting from 3rd gear to 4th gear. Much shorter.

Part way through my detail of the X5. After some initial work and closer inspection, the paint is in great need of the clay bar. So, I'll clay it. But after clay, it seems really good, so I'll go straight to a final wax. I've got the roof done so far, have to take my time though as I'm pretty sore from the gym this morning. It'll take me a couple days to do it all I'm sure... Its so nice having two cars again. :biggrin

Did you do from the top? I know the m3 is a little different but I found it pretty easy to do from the bottom without removing the exhaust (small hands). I was having too much trouble from the top but if the technique is right then I've heard it is pretty easy.

Been troubleshooting a leak in my washer system for months now. Disconnected and capped off the headlamp washer system, still there is a leak. Performed a bunch of permutation and combination of things - still no go.
Eventually ordered all hoses, pump, strainer etc and ended up pulling apart the entire hose system going from the reservoir to the nozzles on the hood. Replaced the whole damn thing today. Also replaced the upper hood vent where the nozzles sit since it had a crack due to age. Will find out in the next 24-48 hours if the leak is now finally gone.
if somebody needs to learn how to over-engineer the simplest of systems, do so from the Germans. Just wow!

Kept getting a thermostat code on the wife's ZHP, so I ordered water pump, thermostat, upper and lower hoses, expansion tank. Installed today and found the water pump had been weeping. Hope that is gone. Also decided to do the power steering reservoir and low pressure hoses. One of them had been leaking as evidenced by the crack in it. Also installed new front bumper mesh grille.
Busy day. Tomorrow I have to put in a new door brake on my car and new side skirt clips. I may tackle the revised temp gauge with my pasoft.

Still have a cold and am waiting on a 14 mm hex head to do the differential oil, but last night I think I completed the E90 compass/autodim/HomeLink mirror retrofit. I "think" because I can't turn on the car yet because I still have to fill and bleed the cooling system, and when the car is in accessory mode the compass doesn't turn on but when I lock the car the clown nose blinks. I'll see in a couple days!
I refreshed the shifter knob (same OEM ZHP knob) since the old one had a slight rip in the front and the shifter gate icon was bubbling underneath the plastic.
Finally, my BMW Performance piano black grilles came, but I am not sure I trust myself swapping them out. I have a terrible history on my last car of breaking the tabs during removal and installation, so I may save it for someone who is more competent :dunno

I might just do that, just as a test. I want to see 1) how comfortable it is for extended periods of driving, and 2) what it's like to actually drive a car with a harness. I've only been a passenger in harness cars, so this should be interesting to see how awesome corners can be!
I will definitely not be keeping this setup as a daily setup. I'll bring them down to VA and see who wants to experience total control!

This is what I've heard as well. The problem is that there is nowhere to mount that is parallel to the top of the seat. This harness is designed to mount the way I have it set up. Because I don't have a roll bar, I can't use a harness that is designed to be mounted the way you mentioned.
The way I see it is that this shouldn't be any more dangerous than the factory belts as long as everything is properly fitted, but I don't know for sure.
I just saw this post online. I don't know what the source is (since someone posted this on a forum somewhere):
Seat Backs and Downward Shoulderbelt Angle
Regarding spinal compression and the downward angle of the belts. Very early in an accident (forward or rear), the body is compressed down in the seat padding putting the shoulders inline with the top of the seat back (if it is not there or below already). This transfers the downward load of the belts away from the shoulder and to the seatback. The QuickFit belts are all car specific. The traditional Rallye 3 and Rally 4 belts have a vehicle certification list (we are the ONLY company with such a list). To be certified for a vehicle, Schroth calculates the geometry of all belt mounting angles to ensure that they do not exceed 45 degree downward angle and also to verify the mounting points can be properly accessed for mounting. We also test the specific seats with a downward load test (developed by Schroth) to ensure that the seat back will take the downward angle forces (about 3,500 lbs). All BMW, Audi, VW, Mini, Subaru WRX/STI and a few others can pass this test. Many SAAB, Volvo, and some Merecedes did not pass this test. It is not a failure of seat design just that to be safe in normal use this level of seatback strength is not normally needed.

Got an unlimited wash pass for the next month to try out a place I pass by on my commute. Washed it today, then clayed/waxed the trunk lid and hood. PO had a NRA badge mounted to the trunk that I needed my heat gun to peel off. Ended up leaving a lot of residue, the clay bar took care of 98% of it. Trunk looks decent now, wish I could say the same for the hood.

Thanks Seth.
[/B]
There's no harness bar available to mount between B pillars for our cars? That would still allow you to run the belts without running a cage.

I don't know. I'm going to call Schroth tomorrow and ask them what their reasoning is for using tail straps mounted so low. I really wanted to mount it to the child seat anchors in the rear deck, but the installation manual explicitly forbids it stating that it can't handle the stresses.

Everything I've ever read about harnesses has said they should be used with a harness bar when running stock seats. Post up what they say- curious to hear their response.

I can't find any decent pics showing how a harness bar would be mounted in an E46. It doesn't look like a simple setup; I see multiple attachment points, meaning PITA to install and remove. That in itself will guarantee I will not run a harness bar.
We'll see what Schroth says tomorrow. If they say that a harness bar is needed (which is NOT mentioned in their installation documentation), then I will have to remove the harness hardware and sell it.
I know a couple of veteran track guys that run this harness the same way I have it. I don't know if they're doing this out of ignorance or what. I'll use the information Schroth gives me as a guide to my next step.

I thanks what my be missed here is that THESE harnesses to not require a bar......most harnesses do, but these are designed to work with OEM seats as well as HANS devices if needed.
The fact that these are quick release harnesses that clip into the rear seat buckles mean they physically won't work with a bar anyway......at least this is the way I understand it.

I was more referring to the style of bar that keeps the belts at the correct height behind the rear seats, not one for the harnesses to actually mount to.

Another day finished, another day with progress on the cars...
M3: Installed the OEM gloss black kidney grills. Otherwise, she's getting dirty pulling daily driver status for the wife AND myself while I do a full detail on the X5.
X5: Today I finished the paint work, a full/extensive clay bar, followed by a coat of wax. I have been having to compound and polish a couple of small areas that need extra attention before the final coat of wax. Debadged it last night, got the area looking perfect now. Also did the windows. Tomorrow I will take a crack at Leatherique on the seats, and hopefully getting the wheels off for a good cleaning and maybe wax. Lastly, polish those tips....

Pertaining to harness ideal is 0-20 degrees down from top of seat. However 40 is acceptable. 90 is bad news and I believe that's what you were referring to badclown.

Wow, great work guys. Drove mine to and from work is about it for today. My buyer that was to pick up the car Thursday afternoon changed his mind, this happened Tuesday but the wound is still fresh. Luckily two other e46F guys are interested in the car, one from WI and another from NC. The guy in NC has been trying to buy another car, but the seller just keeps dragging his feet. The WI guy has been approved for the loan, he just hasn't been able to get his wife into the bank to sign the paperwork, she is a tax person and of course has been swamped. The price has been negotiated for both potential buyers (same price with roof rack and halo's), its just a matter of who gets to Memphis first with the funds. Hopefully this weekend.
Meanwhile, I joined an Atlanta i3 group a few weeks back to see what deals people were getting with their dealers. There are only 2 2014 i3's with the color and options I want left in the nation and they are at the same dealer in Atlanta. So a member of that group posts a pic from the dealer today and I'm pretty sure both of them are in it (the twins to the right)

Which makes me want either one even more. I'm not sure what % tint is on the one to the left but that would be the first mod after de-badging and coding.

Anytime, and our trade (my garage/driveway, tools, and experience) for his labour is ALWAYS welcome!
We also swapped my 135Ms on replacing my 68Ms (which I use for winter storage), and 17" Fuchs replacing the 15" Fuchs on the 911 (also used for storage).
We also took the 911 for a good blast today, before I put it up for sale on Ebay :(

Last night after everyone left, Bruce helped me (reworded, "did all the work himself" on getting my Xenon leveling sensor connecting rod installed. I previously couldn't figure out why the rod wasn't quite lining up properly with the leveling sensor arm so I never ended up replacing it. Bruce took one look yesterday and saw that the leveling sensor bracket was bent out of shape, which is why it didn't line up. I had no clue it wasn't supposed to be like that. So, thanks Shawn for having your car over there; otherwise neither of us would have known what to look for if yours wasn't in pieces!
