Oil on the maf sensor is never a good thing

JupiterBMW
03-25-2015, 08:12 AM
From what I've been reading, I personally think aftermarket oiled intakes tend to kill E46 MAFs, at least on the non-M's.

Hmm... Ya know. The issue didn't start until I dropped that other filter onto it now that I think about it. And it's bolted directly onto the maf... And suddenly this all makes sense.... I could kiss you...... But that'd be weird....
Just my $0.02, however I don't think oiled intake filters kill the MAF. I think OVERoiled intake filters can kill your MAF. That being said, get some MAF cleaner (not Brakleen or Carb cleaner, purpose built MAF cleaner) and try that. If/when you oil the intake filter, just do it lightly, only enough to cover it, no need to oversaturate.

Congrats Joop. I didn't realize you got an M3. Very exciting!
Thank you sir! I had a whole "unicorn hunting" thread going, lots of details in there. Pics coming soon... She gets on the transport tomorrow.

Dropped the X off at the dealer today for some scheduled service. The rear brake pads kicked the light on recently, but I pushed my Service Advisor a little, and hopefully I'll get new pads and rotors all the way around. After the last service bill, he SHOULD do me that much... We'll see. Also getting the brake fluid completely flushed and bled, and new cabin air filters.

On a crappy note, they won't install the brake pads that I got from Ray, so I'll have to do the brakes AGAIN when I get it back, but then I'll have a brand new set of OEM pads to sell. No biggie I suppose. :thumbsup

First of all, congrats to John on the purchase of the e90 M3, just checked out the thread, what a ride. A double M household, congrats to you and your family!

Knocked one layer or dirt off the ZHP at a carwash today, I needed to kill a little time and needed to get some bird poo off of my clear coat. She still needs hand-washed but of course the weather is calling for more rain. I honestly don't think I've been able to hand wash the car this YEAR. I've been hitting up the car wash (not automatic of course) every now and then to remove anything on the clear coat and or salt from the bit of ice and snow we have had. I also went through my first aid kit in the car, dumped anything that looked old and suspicious, replaced with new. If you guys don't have one, there is a decent 90pc one on Amazon for $16. I bought one for the CR-V which prompted me to go through the older one in the ZHP. I added a few more things to both than what were in there before, a recent recertification in first aid, CPR and AED prompted purchasing one for the CRV.

I'm on the edge of ordering vapor barriers for the passenger side doors on the ZHP, also having an odd issue with the stereo. Sometimes when I hit a bump all the speakers in the drivers front door go out. Hit another bump and they all come back on. Anyone experience that before? If so, I'd love to hear where you found the problem, if not, if you have any suggestions where to start checking connections I'd love to have some advice. I also have fresh brake fluid to put in the car at some point this week or weekend while at work. I just need the better half to come sit in the car and work the pedal.

X5: at the dealer for brakes. They would not replace the rotors though... Ugh, and you'd think they'd slide me a little extra given the huge service we did... Pick her up in the morning.

No sweat homie, wasn't sure if I prompted a closure! :rofl

As for my previous post, yeah, I was hoping that my Service Advisor would put a new set of rotors on the X5 regardless of the measurements. Heck, I'd even throw him a $50 tip or something for doing it... The extended maintenance plan on the X5 runs out at the end of August, so I was hoping to get just a few more free parts before the FULL cost of the truck really hits... :shift

Luckily the new M3 has extended maintenance until May 2017. I couldn't be happier about that! :thumbsup

Pulled the passenger side door panels last night, neither vapor barrier is ripped or degraded, but neither are attached at the bottom either. Have any of you guys had to re-seal these yet? I know I have an older ZHP, but this has been going on for a year or more now, it was an excuse to hog the garage when we only had one of two spaces in the past. I saw a youtube video in which an e46 owner used some black automotive silicon sealant to seal them back up, I'm not sure about going that route. A local BMW CCA member is going to get me the part number from the excess he has from doing his x3. He's still trying to talk me into replacing the barriers, I'm just not sure its necessary. Anyone?

I don't think so. As you may know the OE stuff can be a bit tricky to get off, especially in colder temps. Colin may have a leak in his passenger's door, but I have not been able to confirm what is causing the wet floor. I plan to pull that door card and reapply some more of this stuff. None of the other doors I've done have had any issues. Just use a moderate amount and you should be fine. I don't think it's that important to remove all of the original.

Replaced final stage resistor for 2nd time. Last one was a Uro FSR with the older 58-pin style heat sink installed May 2013. It lasted 25,000 miles and almost two years, running the fan every second of those 25,000 miles. New one is a Behr with 39-pin heat sink. Good thing is I now have HVAC after 5 days without. Bad news is I'm not positive the FSR was the problem.

Just got home with my '03 330Ci. Sent it to the doctor for some spring cleaning/maint. Hmmm, this week:

- New MTech Bumper cover
- New headlight lenses and corners
- New xenon ignitor
- Replacement undertray/reinforcement plate
- UUC DSSR
- Rear pads and rotors
- Oil change
- New sunroof cassette (my 6yo daughter will be happy, she missed the open sunroof)
- New Michelin Pilot Super Sport (255/35-18)

Next on the agenda will be a full detail when it gets slightly warmer and a new windshield. Sorry about changing over from the snow tires so soon, it is my fault for the snow today.

- S Line: Attractive girl with some minor issues. She has a good job and presents a very professional appearance. Not too high maint. Long term prospect

Ok so I managed to fix one problem while working on another lol.

While working with my MAF to find out what was wrong with it... I decided it's broken. Totally.. So I bought one from a buddy who had a working extra that he didn't need. Now, while the AFE intake was on, I'd never had any problems. So I decided to drop the AFE filter back in and see what happened. Turns out I had the right idea for getting the filter to fit with the Stett boots. I just used the wrong filter in my haste to make it work.

So, in the next few shots you'll see that I've unbolted the AFE aluminum reducer and instead of deleting it and the filter... I moved em forward in the airbox... Yup... The filter has a lil bit of space to move forward and it gets rid of the kink in the Stett boot. So I can have my cake and eat it too. Yay!! Pardon the dirt. I haven't detailed my engine bay this week. Yet..

As far as the intake is concerned? Totally. As far as the MAF is concerned.... We'll see. I can't find any other issues with the car other than the MAF and my current MAF was already damaged. Which I didn't realize until I got a look at an OEM MAF. If you have an extra MAF you don't need I'd still buy it lol. I prefer to have extra's of certain car parts laying around. Call me paranoid lol.

Yes, with all 3 FSRs I've experienced--when they were working properly--I was able to select a different fan speed for each 2 bars on the display (8 different fan speeds). The difference is the FSR in the middle (the Uro one I just pulled out), every fan speed was about 1 or 2 settings faster than the same setting on the FSR that came with the car or the Behr I just put in. When the Uro FSR failed, I could not change fan speeds nor change any of the other HVAC settings, and the fan kept running with the key out. But then I had the same problem with the new Behr FSR until I unplugged the HVAC control panel and plugged it back in. That's why I'm wondering if it was a failure of the control panel instead of the FSR.

Did you have control of fan speed on either of the stage resistor? Or did you have your fan running on full blast all the time?

Upon further inspection, it appears that the PO siliconed the DISA to the intake and used super glue to support a cracked/broken flapper support. I suppose a DISA gold is now in my future...

- New MTech Bumper cover
- New headlight lenses and corners
- New xenon ignitor
- Replacement undertray/reinforcement plate
- UUC DSSR
- Rear pads and rotors
- Oil change
- New sunroof cassette (my 6yo daughter will be happy, she missed the open sunroof)
- New Michelin Pilot Super Sport (255/35-18)

Next on the agenda will be a full detail when it gets slightly warmer and a new windshield. Sorry about changing over from the snow tires so soon, it is my fault for the snow today.

what is the wiring for to the right of your intake along the fender area?

I would guess for angle eyes. I put mine in some loom.

----

Butyl tape came in from Amazon today, not quite $11.00 with tax, prime shipping. I re-sealed the vapor barriers on both passenger side doors, removed both drivers side door cards to check them out and both were still well stuck at the bottom, the drivers front had a bit at the top not sticking so I added some to it. In the process I broke some clips and surprisingly there were a couple of screws missing. So now I need to replace those that were broken and/or missing and I can call this issue fixed. For the minimal time, effort and money, I should have done this when the issue appeared a year or more ago. Luckily the car only spends, at most, 4 days per 4 week repeating schedule outside.

Car just completed 75,000 miles so it was time to perform and oil and safety service. This also included fixing the leaking valve cover gasket and the leaking oil filter housing gasket. During the oil filter housing gasket, I also decided to replace both drive belts. Belts looked fine, however changing them seemed like perfect preventative maintenance.

During the safety service, I always take some screwdrivers and wrenches and make sure a few hundred screws and nuts are tight. In this inspection found the front sway bar links were loose.

Lots of drool indeed,

Did a valve adjustment on the M5 today..

Next is driveshaft csb, ignition rotor, dizzy cap, plugs, trans fluid, fuel filter and that should conclude the inspection 2. Already drained the coolant and flushed the block, changed the oil with Kendall Gt1 and did the air filter.

Last on the list is bushings and ball joints then its ready for DD usage again. The engine sounds really smooth again, less ticky and throttle response is better.

Wait, WHAT? i3 > ZHP?

Yeah, we drove one when they made their way around the US pre-launch and then I took one home for an extended test drive last fall. I love the ZHP, but its about time to close that chapter in my life. I've had the car since I was 25. I don't know, I go through these cycles every few months, this may or may not pass. But I'm going to start purging nearly 10 years worth of stuff from attic (lots of ZHP stuff up there), some will go to via pay it forward, other stuff for sale. Probably put the car back to as close to stock as possible (I sold the springs and I'm not changing out the poly FCABS, RTABS, etc). I think I'll start a new thread discussing how much to return to stock, its tricky, its not a Honda Civic and the mods are tasteful, so is it worth more modded or stock? Its a conundrum. Is it worth the hassle to de-mod and sell everything?

Ugh.

There are, I live 2.2 miles from work, but unfortunately those 2.2 miles are not bike-friendly, it would be perfect for me. That instant torque and low overall weight is intoxicating too, I suggest taking one for a spin if you haven't already.

-----

Took a complete set of used OEM ZHP disc's as well as a front pair from the CRV to the scrapper today. 66lbs and a whopping $3.01 was paid out to me. haha At least they won't end up in a landfill.

Brought all of my cleaning supplies to work to wash the car, and of course there is a chance of rain tonight and everyday through Friday. $*%$&&!**(!! Brought my end links that were too long, wiped them down, created FS threads here and on e46f. Looked up and sure enough my AKG COTM $50 certificate expired 3/4/15. I emailed them anyway to see if they would still honor it and if they would be interested in a set of FCAB lollipop's I found in my attic. Popped by an AutoZone to look for a few door clips I broke while re-sealing the vapor barriers recently, no luck. Getting together an order tonight.

Fun fun fun, going to pull the OEM m135 wheels down tomorrow and go have the tires dismounted and discarded, then get a quote to fix the one with a slight bend as well as refinishing them all. If all of that goes well, start looking for tires, will pull my 19" VMR V710's and sell them. Car should ride much better back on the OEM 18's.

What else do you have in that attic of yours ?

Hey there, I meant to reply to your PM, I'm out of the LCM game for now. This might change again though, we'll see if this passes or not.

In the attic there is a pair of OEM lower control arms, the ball joints are bad, but I've heard that some guys are swapping them out. OEM lighting that I may or may not put back on the car, taken off in the fall of 2006, haven't been in the sun since. What else, what else, carpeted floor mats that BMW replaced under warranty just before I put in all-weathers (basically new). Not sure which to keep and which to sell, the all-weather (drivers front) is a bit worn. I might have some fog light parts, I think I have two drivers side (or passenger side) club sport splitters. I'll be removing my parrot bluetooth kit, my DICE ipod/iphone kit, might remove the front strut-brace, LED angel eyes, roof rack with custom mounted wide Thule fairing, etc, etc. If I can de-mod the car, get it close to stock and sell all the mods and the car and walk away with $10k I would be happy. I know thats going to be difficult. It is a 2-owner car though and low mileage for a 2003. One of the first ZHP's according to the registry.

Are you looking for anything in particular? A lot has happened over the course of nearly 10 years, I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot of things.

It really is, I describe driving it as the S54's grandpa. After 4k this thing really screams and pulls like a racecar, its insane.

WTF... when did you get a 3.6L? Put it in an E30

Haha, about a month ago. Working on it for my dad (his car). We think it has a really mild cam, the intake cam lobes are quite different from the exhaust side. The exhaust side has real smooth and more curvy lobes on the edges and the intake side is a lot more sharp, I think its a schrick.. So does my friend who helped me the whole time.

I would love to swap our E30, but not with the engine from this car, lol. Maybe a 24v M50 for the E30.. Or a M30B35.

I first read your post wrong, thank you for the encouragement, unfortunately I have been seeing a lot of 2003 and 2004 ZHP's going for a lot less than $10k. I'm like you, I think closer to stock is better, plus I can sell all of the parts and recoup some of the costs to return the car to stock (refinishing wheels, buying new tires, a trip to a PDR guy, having some other work done, etc). Somehow I kept the car ding free for about 7 years and within the past few years she's collected a few of them. I don't understand it, its always by its self typically in a garage (school, private at home, shop at work). I hate to say it but I think a guy that was renting a room from me dinged it up in the garage with his POS car. Maybe not all of them, but I think a few. I would hug the wall and he would pull in like a fat slob. He is long gone now. I also think getting the car in nearly tip-top stock shape will help it find the right buyer I need for it. I won't just sell it to anyone. That probably sounds crazy, and it might be, but it has to go to a good home.

Strut bar is a black power coated mason engineering brace. It will probably be one of the last things to go because the roads here are insanely bad, I don't want to chance mushrooming a strut tower.

https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/v/t1.0-9/1391652_10200779485197094_137548251_n.jpg?oh=dca5d 0866971852bb1059be475bb4178&oe=5571FA5B

I don't quite remember what it cost or when I got it, but the paperwork is all in my ZHP binder at home. I think I've had it for a few years now, not that they wear out or anything.

There's no rubbing with a stock suspension I'm sure.
With a lowered setup, you need to modify the plastic in the rear wheel well as well as roll your fenders.

Stock calipers fit just fine. They even fit perfectly on the BMW Performance BBK's.

Initial detail of the M3 today... Really wasn't in horrible shape, but I found some hologram on the hood and a few fine scratches. So, did a polish and final coat of wax going on soon. Then I'll hopefully get the wheels detailed and some wax on the barrels. If I feel wild, I might even polish the exhaust tips. :)

Wheels are straight and no cracks/ bends

No rubbing at all, even went over a few bumps and didn't get any rub.
Breaks clear with tons of space. A BBK should fit extremely easily

cleaned all leather and plastic surfaces (especially rear seat that keeps getting milk sprayed on it...PITA getting it out of the perforated leather), removed and cleaned the rubber floor mats, vacuumed extensively, cleaned rear cargo cover and the cargo tray, vacuumed that area and cleaned inside of the windows on the X5...nice to have carpet and carpet floor mats exposed again.

Tonight's progress on 02 - rear valance smoothed. No more cutout for stock exhaust or the pre stamped area for the earlier exhaust. Also welded up two little drilled holes (odd) and added the hole for the wiring to come out behind bumper for the euro tag lights that are in bumper. I am deleting the U.S. Spec tag/bracket/lights on the rear panel. I will remove the tag tomorrow. Weld up any holes associated with that assembly. Then rear is done with welding.

The all-weather rubber floor mats from BMW did a great job of keeping the winter crud off the carpets

It's interesting you say this. My rubber all season mats leave impressions in the carpet with the design of the underside of the mats. So, all the winter's salt got accumulated in those small outlines/crevices and can't for the life of me get them out.

WeatherTech doesn’t allow this.

Did you leave the carpet floor mats in place and do rubber overtop?

If so, remove carpet floor mats and wash with hose and then air dry for a day or so

Woke up and decided to knock out another step. Removed hole in rear panel where wiring exited for the U.S. Tag lighting. Enlarged new hole to accept the rubber grommet on the new lower hole for the euro wiring. Wrapped tag wiring in new harness cloth tape.

No, I don't have the carpet floor mats anymore. They were trashed when I bought the car so I threw them out.

BP, do you have cracks in your winter mats? my black coupe came with winter mats that the previous owner i think used year-round... anyway, they leaked.

No cracks; mine are solid. The only holes they have in them are the holes I had to punch to make them fit the E46 hooks. My mats are from an E90 335xi. I don't have a problem with them leaking, but I do find way more crud all around the mat than I'd like.

I'd love to be able to buy some WeatherTech mats but unfortunately those are almost last on my list.

Wow Marcus. GL on the sale, such a nice car.

Thanks, I responded to a WTB ZHP thread on e46f, the guy is looking for one under 100k, but why not. Another guy shot me a PM asking about it, we bounced a few PM's back and forth and it might happen. I told him I needed until about July 4th to get the car where I want it for its next owner. He didn't indicated he would challenge a $9k asking price. I think I can net $1k from the parts I have to sell, so I would be ok with clearing $10k.

I'm always all over the place on what to buy next, one week I want a AWD Tiguan, the next ax x1, the next an i3. I think I'm ready to defect to electric, at least give it a go for awhile anyway. We rarely take my car anywhere anymore anyway because the better half's CRV is just such a great vehicle for nearly all purposes. So an i3 should do fine for me back and forth to work (5 miles round trip) and a few errands on my days off. We'll see, a lot can change between now and July 4th, but I am going to start moving forward with de-modding the car and clearing out the attic.

From what I've seen, most people who sell their ZHPs for something that doesn't have an M in its model name tend to regret their decision. I wouldn't do it if those are your choices, but that's just my opinion. You'll have nothing to scratch the itch. An i3 is hardly a "fun" car.

Agree to disagree, have you driven one yet? Instant torque will snap your neck from a stand-still. I did an extended test drive last fall and loved most of it. I should probably see about doing another one if they still allow it.

Finally succeeded on fixing my trunk lights. Pulled open the rubber boot trunk one end a time. On the first boot connecting the trunk lid, Brown stripe on White wire was cut. Found out that this is one of the wires that controls the latching mechanisms that tells if the lid is open or closed.

Pulled open the other rubber boot trunk and slit a 3/4" to retrieve the other wire that goes inside the wire cluster. I was able to fish a new #18 AWG line and soldered to both cut ends. Shrink tube on both connections. Re taped the open slit. Put everything back together.

I'm glad that the cut was very accessible.

The rubber boot that looks like an elephant trunk that connects the lid to the trunk. Look at the right hinge. You will see what I'm talking about.

Well a few updates, and the first couple of mods for the M3!

M3: Picked up a set of color matched front reflectors and a set of black kidneys. I think the black kidneys are perhaps the first mods done on EVERY enthusiast BMW, kind of makes me laugh a bit. But, will definitely change up the front end a bit. I also set up an appointment this week to have the windshield and sunroof panel tinted, Llumar AirBlue 80. That should help with the blazing heat this summer. :)

X5: While I was on the iND website getting the reflectors for the M3, I also ordered a set of color matched rear reflectors for the X5. Its not a huge mod, but one of the little things on the list I'd like to do. :)
