Finally got the HVAC blower setup properly. I had installed it backwards and never noticed until car was all back together - the air was going in the engine bay rather than the HVAC vents.

Also did oil/filter change with 0W40 and plugs. She purrs!

Anyone want this crap?

I actually ended up doing almost the same thing. I just kept toying with the boot until the kink was a bit smaller. And very good idea with the AFE. I think I'll start looking at the heat shield as well. Heck, if it comes down to it, building another heat shield shouldn't be too difficult.

Checked the fluid levels and tire pressures on the ZHP, for the first time (less than a month in my ownership). Everything was good. Only one thing needs attention: the spare tire has 45 PSI as compared to 60 PSI. No biggie.

LOL. It's steel so I can't leave it exposed. There was a little bit of surface rust on the leading edge where the paint chipped off/PO bottomed out at some point in the last 30 years. Honestly, I've probably done more than enough to paint it but I just wanted to take all the old paint off. I didn't expect it to be this ridiculous

I did consider blasting and powdercoating it but I don't know if I care that much. I might get another one and weld on a side pod like how the E30 pan is. I would've just used the E30 pan but it doesn't clear left frame rail

AIT Relocation Kit for the ///M. This mod moved the sensor down into the air filter box to keep it from getting heat soaked. I did this to mine and it was a noticeable difference. The intake air temp reads closer to the actual outside temp with this also.

I did my wp and power steering pulleys last month when I did my cooling system overhaul so I did both tensioners and the idler. Definitely do your tranny and diff fluid. Such better shifting!

Ok, so after going through my parts bin... And by that I mean the coat closet... I managed to find a filter that allows me to use the AFE heat shield without fussing with the design AND use my Stett boots. Anyone here should be able to do this. I simply removed my Pro Dry 5in filter w/ 3in adapter and replaced it with a 4in filter w/ a 3in connection. This frees up ALL of the space needed to remove that nasty bend from the Stett boots when using the AFE shield. I still have the Pro Dry filter and adapter. I simply removed them to make this work.

Maf housing is 3 inches? Kinda hard to tell but did you install the filter directly to the maf housing? Or is there a coupler in the middle of it? Just wondering since I am going to get rid of my kink as well and need to get a new filter and other necessary parts.

The filter is installed directly to the MAF. O'Reilly's or Auto Zone will sell the exact filter I am currently running. It's a Spectre filter that comes with adapter rings. Luckily I still had my old rings lying around. Use the adapter rings to mount the filter directly to the MAF.

The filter is installed directly to the MAF. O'Reilly's or Auto Zone will sell the exact filter I am currently running. It's a specter filter that comes with adapter rings. Luckily I still had my old rings lying around. Use the adapter rings to mount the filter directly to the MAF.

The O'Reilly Item number for that specific filter is 8138. It's the Speed filter from Spectre. I've used these filters on a lot of my old builds and never had any issues with them. And ooooh yes lol. I certainly remembered to hook that cable back up lol.

Regreased AKG FCABs and Hotchkis front swaybar bushings. Zerk fittings on swaybar bushings weren't working, or else my cheap grease gun isn't working properly, so I had to remove the bushing brackets and grease them by hand. The FCABs still had some grease inside, the swaybar had almost none, which probably explains the occasional squeaking of late.

Filled up the Mini yesterday. I drove 283 miles on this gas tank, all city driving. That comes to 23.5 miles/gallon. I'm happy with those numbers !

Started my monthly round of overnights a few nights ago, the past few days I've been itching again for something different, something newer. I bet it will pass, I still haven't put 100k of my own miles on my car and I've had it for almost 9 years. Overnights really mess with me, sometimes I have to stop and ask myself, if this is how I really feel (about whatever) or is this frame of mind skewed? I need a different job, trying to get into PA school. I guess it was brought on by an old friend taking me to a Grizzlies Game, huge VW fan, has had a few BMW's, one Porsche, his dad has an Alpine White 1M. He suggested I look at a 2012+ Tiguan 4-motion R-Line, I've been checking them out online, they are pretty hot. Just not sure how it would drive, probably like our CRV, always FWD unless the rear slips. I would think an x1 or an x3 would be closer to the driving dynamic I'm used to. I'm sure I'm just dreaming, the house needs a new HVAC this year, it won't be cheap. Is it 8am CST yet?

Hang in there, Marcus. I literally had the cash in my hands last summer to go check a ZHP on saturday. Well, the day before the AC guy came to the house and said : you need a new AC unit. Needless to say the saturday appt was cancelled and the money went to the AC.

Maybe you just need to do something for your car (new tires, new speakers, etc) and this will reignite your love.

That light looks awesome! I bought a bright Snap-on LED portable shop light at Costco which works well for working on one wheel well or under the car, but it has no good way to shine down on the engine compartment.

Anyway last Friday I took my E36 to the rent-a-lift place, got it all jacked up, removed the transmission brace and all 6 guibo bolts, only to realize you can't take the guibo out without also loosening or dropping the center support bearing, which requires removing the exhaust, and the rent-a-lift place was closing in 30 minutes. So I put it all back together and paid for an hour without actually getting anything done!

I have to plan for 3 hours next time to drop exhaust, and am thinking of replacing the CSB "while I'm in there" because don't know how long ago it was replaced.

I'm aware of two in the Bay Area: Pit Row in Santa Clara near San Jose Airport, and Lifted in Fremont. Pit Row has more lifts (about 10 two-post lifts) but is pretty strict on closing by 8pm and is not open on Mondays. Lifted has 3 lifts but are more flexible on DIY times if you call ahead. Both have nice people. The owner of Pit Row is a German guy who used to own an E46 back in Germany. The Lifted group are some guys (half named Chris) who have various project cars going including engine swaps.

Both make more money on full service work rather than DIY rentals. PO of my E36 had the clutch replaced at Lifted as full-service work.

We had an '05 4.8is. It was an incredible vehicle it sounded like a friggin race car when you got on it and it handled great and was really comfy at the same time.... that being said. once an e53 gets over 100k on it, it turns into a big piece of crap. He's done only about 1/2 of the stuff that goes wrong with them at that mileage... admire it from a safe distance!

OK all, crazy car story, and a question. I'll try to be concise.

When working on William's car, he mentions he has a new expansion tank, and that his old one has tons of miles. It wasn't on our "to do", but we change it for preventative maintenance. Just a few days, later, MY expansion tank springs a leak. So, I borrow William's old one to install, and order mine online. Just a FEW days later, William's old tank in MY CAR springs a leak! So after an expensive tow, I go to BMW in my wife's car, by a new tank (at 2x cost), install it, and go to the event I was driving to. 30 minutes into the drive my wife texts me that my new tank arrived in the mail. CRAZY set of circumstances. 2 expansion tanks failures within days.

I have the G.A.S. cap. Has anyone heard of issues with it? This really could just be a freak coincidence, but I thought I'd check.

I was trying to think of a way to test caps. I might be able to seal one of the split tanks with JB Weld, install a Schrader valve onto it and pump it up with a bicycle pump. When the cap starts releasing pressure, disconnect pump and check pressure with a tire gauge.

Any thoughts?

Have not heard any issues. The idea behind the cap is to lower the pressure to prevent the tank from forming cracks. Maybe reach out to G.A.S and see if they had people report any issues?

Currently have run-flats mounted, but come with a new, unmounted set of BF Goodrich g-force Sport Comp-2 tires in factory sizes. Finally got Botond's new Stett intake boots adjusted and installed this afternoon. There was some trim work that needed to be done on the upper boot to get it installed using BPs Gruppe M CAI. Still not exactly 100% but is workable. For the quality of these boots (and they're good quality), I would have thought they would fit much better than they did on BP's car. :scratchinghead I will have to feed today's job back to Chad at Stett Performance so int he future these boots will be made to fit better. As Patrick commented today if they took off about 2/8" from both the lower and upper boot I think they would fit much better.

Myself, I wouldn't pay the price for their DISA Gold knowing how easy (and satisfying!) it is to do the rebuild yourself. Jeff, of course, may disagree!

Dude... while I had my M20 in my E30 I never once had a solid idle. Never, ever, ever, ever. It took a damn engine swap with an S50 to get a solid idle. lmao

At one point, my brother even installed a plumbing valve to bypass the stupid ICV, so I could control my idle on the spot! It was annoying when the engine was cold because to have an idle at 750-800 or so (when warmed up), I'd have to set it in a way that it would almost stall when it was cold so I'd always have to keep the revs up till it warmed up!


Thanks JP, the m20 is so underrated in reliability and engineering.

Had 340k on my M20 when we pulled it, and it was still functioning PERFECTLY!

Dude... while I had my M20 in my E30 I never once had a solid idle. Never, ever, ever, ever. It took a damn engine swap with an S50 to get a solid idle. lmao

At one point, my brother even installed a plumbing valve to bypass the stupid ICV, so I could control my idle on the spot! It was annoying when the engine was cold because to have an idle at 750-800 or so (when warmed up), I'd have to set it in a way that it would almost stall when it was cold so I'd always have to keep the revs up till it warmed up!



Had 340k on my M20 when we pulled it, and it was still functioning PERFECTLY!

Took an S50 to fix it lol. :shifty

New Stett boots on Colin's car. Lent him my DISA as his was toast. Also put a screw or two into his fender well plastic as one was flapping from a bad pot hole incident.

Thanks! As I mentioned in the other thread, it is easy and straightforward. A very small screwdriver is quite, quite helpful.


My experience with the GAS kit was excellent - their instructions are extraordinary, and it's really a very simple rebuild with an end-result that is far superior to the original. Myself, I wouldn't pay the price for their DISA Gold knowing how easy (and satisfying!) it is to do the rebuild yourself. Jeff, of course, may disagree!

I am in agreement. It is nice to fix it yourself and spend a little time doing it yourself.

Well, my 330ci (non-ZHP) goes to the doctor for a week of spring cleaning as of tomorrow. Among other things, the big stuff:

- New sunroof cassette. Finally went south on me last summer. My daughter has been complaining, as she loves the sunroof.
- MTech 2 bumper cover.
- New undertray
- New tires. The snow better be done until the end of the year.
- Oil change and detail.

Taking care of nagging stuff that has been bothering me the last few months.

Valve Cover Gasket- just like in all the great videos. Only 75,000 miles, but it was hard and cracking- small leak onto header and I saw a touch on the coils. Best part was working with my 14 yr old son on most of the project, then having one of my two 9 yr old daughters help put it all back together. Good for kids to know they can fix things. My daughter even said, "Dad, I probably couldn't design this (the zhp) now, but when I'm a bit older I'll be able to..."

Started my day off to a rough start and idle that smoothed it's way out on the way to work. Read codes at work. Lean codes on bank 1/2, cylinder #5 misfire, misfire on all cylinders.

I must have had a gigantic intake leak due to improper Stett boot install.

Just down done breaking her down to parade rest and re-installing everything. I cleared codes.

Startup test sat. Road test tomorrow AM.

The only thing I can think of is the connection to the TB I made was lame. Hose clamp kept trying to walk it's way down the Stett boot. I corrected that today by applying counter force (holding it in place) to the hose clamp with a LASD. Connection is now sound.

BP....this job is definetely easier the 2nd time, now having done it twice.

I think my MAF has gone to meet it's Bavarian maker. The car is giving a code p102 so I toyed with the intake, cleaned the MAF, tried two different intakes including stock, and even made sure all the little prongs were connecting on the cable. No changes.. Time to buy a MAF I suppose.

99,431 miles. I've been replacing old parts here and there. I thought I had a lil more time on the MAF. This just started after I toyed with the intake again the other day. I was fine tuning the fitment. Maybe I damaged the MAF somehow while taking it off or refitting it to the intake assembly.

I find this interesting Ben because I went over 170k over the weekend on my ZHP and still on my OE MAF...could be that you accidentally damaged your MAF while toying with your intake setup...either way it sucks...sorry to hear...

See, that makes sense. I've never had a problem with long term use on any of my other cars and their mafs, so mileage wasn't my first guess. Unfortunately the car is still showing sings of maf failure. Running a bit rich, the code, and steady-ish idle at best. Oh, and no throttle on braking. So no more heel-toe for now. What drives me nuts is that it was working just fine before I removed it and set it on the top of the toolbox. I put it back in place and instant problems. I see no visible damage but I'm at wits end. Maybe I butter fingered it somehow.

X5- I used my buddy's code scanner to scan the check engine light on the truck. Code P0456 "Evaporative Emissions System- Small Leak Detected". Erased the code and it hasn't come back yet, almost 24 hours!

Noooooo kidding. Did some "spirited" driving in the X5 tonight and while no codes, had a pretty heavy gasoline smell. Not sure if that was due to heavy right foot or an actual problem... Makes me slightly nervous.

Learned to drive my ZHP with no cabin ventilator fan. I like some airflow in my face! Crack the windows, open the sunroof, realize the vent flaps are still locked in the open position because some air comes through when the car is moving fast enough.

Haha, oh I've been there too. Look the E36 to the indy a couple years ago for an oil leak coming from rear driver's side behind the rear wheel. Mechanic said no oil or fluid anywhere near that part of the vehicle (which I already knew)...and that's when it hit me that my spare quart of oil in the trunk had sprung a leak. Time for ice cream cone to forehead trick! 😀

From what I've been reading, I personally think aftermarket oiled intakes tend to kill E46 MAFs, at least on the non-M's.
