Today... I blew a power steering hose on the E36. Was instructing at a car control clinic. At lunch a senior instructor took me on the skidpad in my car to give me some tips. Was having fun sliding the rear end then heard a funny sound and steering got really heavy, thought I'd deflated a tire, but upon stopping, red ATF was on the left front wheel, and sprayed around other parts of the front-left engine bay. The instructor then took me out in his Porsche so we could pretend he was a student (a few different kinds of students actually).

At the end of the day the AutoX organizers were nice enough to trailer me back to San Jose and I used AAA to tow it home from there. Luckily it didn't let go last Monday when I was 186 miles away. Silly me, I knew it was leaking and didn't know how old it was; should have replaced it as preventative maintenance. Time to order a new one.

But sliding the rear end of the E36 is much easier and more fun than on the ZHP!

What causes increased stress on power steering hoses? I kinda just assumed they were under a similar load most of the time.

I cut a hole in the forward drivers side corner of the box slightly smaller than the hose. It was more in the side of the box than the bottom. First put the hose in the brake duct, pulled the excess up through the air box as I pushed it down into position then trimmed the excess from inside the box and cleaned it out before putting the filter back in. With the effort I used in pushing the hose into the duct and air box. I didn't see a need for anything else to secure it.

Yes and I have underdrive pulleys so should be less pressure at any given RPM. I think in the high-pressure hose the pressure also varies with steering effort. That is, for any given engine RPM the pressure in the high pressure line also depends on either amount of steering force. I was driving on a skidpad in 2nd gear attempting to drift a little, so I was applying lots of steering input in continuous or nearly continuous turns, with relatively high RPMs in 2nd gear. And hose was old, possibly original.

But the weird thing was the failure (or at least the main failure) is in the return/cooling line, not the high pressure hose I just replaced.
Theory 1: High pressure line failed and replaced under a previous owner, leaving the original return/cooling line as the oldest line.
Theory 2: Something/somebody hit the return/cooling line hard enough to loosen one of the crimped ends.

They are belt driven so the pressure is determined by RPMs

Probably burn out the pump and wear the rack faster. You can run the system without the pump but I believe people who do that fill the rack with fluid and cap the ports so it's still lubricated inside. Then they delete their PS pump (or at least the pulley) so it's not spinning at all. I thought about just filling the fluid and driving home with the leak, but the AutoX co-chair correctly observed it was spurting fluid pretty quickly.

If I'd had some block-off plugs (14mm or 16mm, not sure which) and a shorter serpentine belt, I guess I could have bypassed power steering right there at the airport and driven home like that.

Friday, I threw the BMW cross bars I bought and mounted the Thule 725 ski holders I have. Used them the past two days, worked out nicely. Anyone know if there's a Thule fairing that will work with the BMW rack?

You have to modify the brackets and basically screw them to the underside of the OEM rack, I've had mine for several years now, its wider than what is recommended for e46 but with some extra patience I got it to look very nice IMO. Its not flat like most fairings, bowed out some due to the extra width. Let me find a pic...

Thanks, it does take some extra effort and work, the outer two brackets are actually attached at the same location as the posts with longer bolts (longer than the bolts that bolt the posts to the crossbar). The middle two brackets I just drilled and used self-tapping screws.

Wow, props to Gorilla tape! I didn't like how the 38" didn't cover the posts but it's probably just my OCD; I'm sure the 38" gets the job done just the same.

Replaced all the power steering hoses and PS reservoir on my E36. It only has 3 hoses and none of the special push-on connectors, because one hose has the cooling coil built in. (The E46 has 4 PS hoses and two have special connectors to connect to the cooling coil.) I had a bad leak, replaced the high pressure PS hose only to discover that wasn't the one leaking--the return/cooling line was failing. On the E46, the high pressure line is the long one with the metal elbow on the bottom; on the E36 the long one on the bottom that looks similar with the "trombone" metal part is the low-pressure return line and cooling coil.

Also installed the front Stoptech stainless steel brake lines on E36, ones I got from Smilez. Installing rear lines will be more work because the E36 M3 has 2 soft lines on each rear corner (E46 has one soft line per corner).

stephenkirsh

What's the point of two lines per corner?

LivesNearCostco
02-26-2015, 10:06 AM
Not sure why but I can explain the difference between E36 and E46. In both models the hard brake tube ends on the body near the middle of the rear trailing arm. On the E46 one long line goes to the rear brake caliper and passes through a support grommet bolted to the inside elbow/bend of the RTA. On some E36es, there is a short hard line at that RTA elbow, so one soft line runs from body to RTA and other soft line runs from RTA to caliper.

I don't pay much attention to MPG's, this car no longer travels out of town and anytime its on the interstate (usually only short bursts) the right pedal is on the floor. I rarely see anything over 19, but I also have heavy 19" VMR V710's with grippy Pilot Super Sports. I don't mind the low MPG because I live 2 miles from work and the past two years have only averaged 5k miles per year. My better half has a Honda CR-V that we take for out of town trips, the ZHP rides too rough with poly RTABS, FCABS 19" wheels and sport cup kit suspension.

EDIT: The last time I did take her out of town I took +/- 10 minutes and popped off the roof rack and stowed it in the trunk. I keep the roof-rack "key" in the tool kit in the trunk.

Having just replaced the rear brake lines last night (again with Stoptech stainless steel lines from Smilez) my opinion is the two-line system with a short piece of hard line on the inner elbow of the RTA allows for more precise brake line routing but it's also more complex and more expensive and that's probably why they went to one single line on the E46.

One of my small flare fitting nuts in the rear (there are 3 on each side in the back, so 6 total for the rear, 8 for the car) rounded off last night. It's 11mm and I don't have an 11mm flare nut wrench, only 10mm, 12mm, 3/8" and 7/16". 11mm open-ended wrench was rounding off the corners and PB blaster didn't work. Went to large vise grip pliers, but the tip of the pliers' jaws kept slipping off the nut. Finally switched to medium-small vise grips that could grab the whole nut in the center of the jaw and that worked but the nut is pretty mangled now. Will have to replace it someday, but I think that means getting someone to cut off and re-flare the end of the hard brake line.

I think the better way would have been to 1) apply PB Blaster sooner and let it soak; 2) Have a proper 11mm flare nut wrench; 3) Switch to the medium vise grip wrench sooner once it was clear a regular wrench was failing.

Anyway, the E36 now has stainless steel brake lines and BimmerWorld brass caliper bushings on all 4 corners, plus a few nights ago I installed the BimmerWorld solid rubber motor mounts with the 3 new power steering hoses.

Thanks, I appreciate it. Kinda pissed but at least it's cheaper than the E46 one so I'm glad it happened in this car. So cool that your windshield is original in your car. I already replaced one in the E21, this will be the third that I know of.

Speaking of factory window stickers, I saw this on an 02 recently

It's faded as hell (and it look like the camera focused on the background) but you can read it in person. It's the emissions info for a 72(?) 2002

Installed an X3 blower motor. Not sure what the fuss is about this job. It's very straightforward. Took about an hour!

I used this guide: http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/BMW-3-Series-E46/75-BODY-How_to_Replace_Your_Blower_Motor/75-BODY-How_to_Replace_Your_Blower_Motor.htm

Stuart, how hard is it to pull the headliner on the wagon?

I have always wanted to re do mine in black suede, and then get either E39 M5 or E46 M3 sun visors.

Wagon is the easiest. It pulls right out the back hatch

I love my Super Sports, friends have called me a "tire snob" for years, I don't care, they have saved my ass so many times, worth every penny.

Nothing to the ZHP today, but I did get the new front brakes on the CRV! Took me a little less than 2 hours, pretty straight forward. The fluid is a little too dark to my liking so we'll do a fluid flush in the near future.

Yeah, it is....if only Chad would get me my Imola spray paint....then I could have all this taken care of....

I will be ordering a brand new carbon fiber Arqray lip soon and this "ratchet looking lip" will be taken care of.....the next lip will be covered in Xpel wrap before mounting so I won't have this very issue next time...

John- Sorry if you stated this before and I didn't catch it, what product(s) do you use on your paint? Although mine is not black, I have owned black cars and understand the difficulty in making them like glass. I figure if its good enough to do that to your black it should more than ample for my silbergrau girl.
Thanks!

Geoff, not much. Absolutely there are others who can provide way better detail (no pun intended :) ) and info on products. I just do what works for me. Having dealt with different black cars for years it's really difficult to keep swirls down. Being in SoCal I wash and wax as little as possible as I don't have to deal with weather as much. I use a Turtle Wax for black cars when I do, and every so often I use a McGuire's carnauba wax. That's it. I keep it simple.

I have had good luck with Meguiars, that's actually what I've used in the past on my black cars. Just wanted to make sure there wasn't some special "uncle Augustus' wax" for BMW's out there that I wasn't aware of. Thanks for the share man. :-)

Geoff that's probably good enough. If you like bmw specific wax try Swissvax. It's $$$ tho. I use dodo juice which also cleans paint, xxx from chemical guys for a nice hard wax and jet seal or blitz (also Chem guys) as a sealant.

The underside of the wagon is identical to sedan. So, you either go with custom or InsidePerformance.de or remove spare tire well (completely) and world in m3 subfloor or custom. If you use m3 part you get all the mounting points for exhaust and charcoal canister etc

The sonax has gotten me through this winter and I am satisfied with it. Easy to apply and leaves a great shine. Plus you can use a detail spray that will add more protection.

I been using this kit
http://www.detailersdomain.com/SONAX-Polymer-Net-Shield-Buy-2-Get-a-Free-Sonax-Brilliant-Detailer_p_966.html

Spring time I will do a proper detail using this 3m perfect it system and then use the sonax again.
http://www.amazon.com/3M-POLISHING-39062-39061-5723/dp/B0082LK87Y

Reason I am sticking to the 3m stuff is because it works and there is no headaches. This is the same system that all professional body shops use after cars have been painted.

Man your car looks Suh-weet!!! All great advice here, I think I'm going to start experimenting with a few of these products and see what I can come up with. My previous black vehicle (ford f-150) had black paint and I used Meguiars at first. But it was a 3 step system and that's if I only wanted to use one coat of polish! So simplicity is a big selling point for me.
Thanks for the all the info guys!

Need to figure out when I would install, create a custom section 1 with cats, and enjoy before figuring out how to pass smog in two years. Plenty of time I guess. Just not stoked to do the install although it seems fairly straight forward.

These are no name brand headers (knock off of SS) with 3/8" flange for OEM studs and not terrible construction. The flanges are in the same plane with 1.5mm tilt on one or two flanges (one side lifted slightly from the heat when welding to the pipe). I think that would be small enough to not make a difference in the installation/gaskets would mate just fine. Next problem that I cannot verify right now is the stud hold location but based on the flange plane alignment I would guess they are ok.

Yea probably should. Just find it hard to pay to play. If I could find a shop that was willing to do for a decent price then I'd be down so I'll start searching and plan for now. Would still need gaskets, nuts etc.

18406

I realize this is why these were cheap, but it seems pretty darn minor with ~1.4-1.5mm gap/tilt. Am I wrong? Will this actually be major? I'm used to seeing this from cheap headers:

Had tires mounted on the 18x8 ARC8's finally. Not so sure about the 245/35's on her car. They look fine on mine, but some reason they look small on her car. More importantly, it was dropped off at the shop to have the manual swap done. I was going to do it while the wife was in NZ, but job got crazy busy and I won't have time to get it done before the 25th.

Spent most of yesterday playing around in the shop with the car. Adjusted the e-brake as it has been giving me some trouble. Holds fine but won't stay engaged. I'm going to tinker with it a bit more today but I believe I'll need a new e-brake assembly if it continues to give me issues.

Brought home a black sapphire metallic convertible hardtop, BMW hardtop ceiling hoist gear and BMW folding windscreen with zippered storage case today. My car is silver gray and before painting the hardtop matching silver gray, I plan to see how well the black sapphire looks installed. Hey the black rag top roof looks good against the silver gray, why not see how the interesting black sapphire metallic does in the looks department? The fellow selling this gear had a 2001 M3 that was totaled last December so this top has the black trim.

Maybe the gaskets you guys got are different from the factory bmw ones? The old ones I removed were thin and the new ones were much thicker.

I removed the old ones, then peeled the sticky backing and installed them around the perimeter with my fingers. Then just put on the lenses and snapped the clips on. No trouble at all.

Awesome progress Shawn!! :thumbsup

Actually did this for my ZHP yesterday but seeing it was a very long day I'll post it today.... After 4 years of ownership I finally purchased a good set of "meet wheels" for my ZHP. These used to be Stuart's wheels so I knew they would be in near perfect shape. Emily (current owner) has maintained them and they were kept very clean when BP and I arrived to pick them up. I sealed the deal with Emily and after seeing these wheels in person, handed her the cash and packed them in my ZHP :)

Thanks to William who gave me his old one so I can be functional while I get a new one online and not have to rush payment. It's not the direction of the slots that's important, it's the direction of the cooling vanes in the center of the rotor. As long as those are good, you have nothing to worry about.

If they're straight vaned (straight to the center of the rotor from the outside) then its orientation shouldn't matter. If the vanes don't go direction to the center of the rotor then it definitely matters.

Finished installing the Stett Intake Boot today. The fitment with the AFE is tight. Not much tighter than the OEM boot though. It's just stiffer so it won't flex as much as the oe boot. There is one fairly noticeable bend in the boot once installed but after refitting the oem boot, I noticed the bend was on the old one as well. The bend has zero noticeable issues in performance. The boot is well crafted and personally, I love the way it looks. Some people like all black engine bays. I have a TiAg car so I want some color somewhere lol. The car feels much better with the new boots. The throttle responds a little better and all of the tiny cracks causing vacuum leaks are gone.

lack of use is actually pretty horrendous for a car. they need to be used regularly (in addition to maintained regularly - this goes without saying here).

mileage is just a number, unless you are considering your ZHP as an investment (based on your stable in your signature, i would imagine that it's not :) ). drive it, maintain it, enjoy it! it's a tool.

Gearing up for brake and power steering fluid changes for the ZHP and the CRV. I almost fell for a $103 kit from ECS, but the wrench isn't the right size, catch cans can be made from plastic tubing and old OJ bottles and the pressurized fluid container can be replaced by the better half in the drivers seat with a 2x4 or two behind the brake pedal. I did buy a 9mm bleeder wrench from eBay for the ZHP. I need to check the CRV to see what size it is, I couldn't find it online. This is being brought on by recently replacing the front disc's and pads on the CRV and seeing some really dirty fluid. I haven't looked at the ZHP's, but I know it hasn't been changed since going out of extended maintenance, so it is way beyond due.

Thanks. For which car are you asking about the P/S reservoir being replaced? Neither of them have been, but should either of them be? The CRV is a 2007 EX-L Nav.

----

Also, does anyone have the door vapor barrier part numbers handy? Passenger front has been leaking for over a year now, typically the car is in a garage everywhere it goes, work, school, home, but 4 days out of the month it has to sit outside at work and it has been raining nearly all 4 of those days this month. I'm ready to fix it permanently, tired of wet carpet on the passenger front floor.

The ZHP, and I don't think it makes THAT big of a difference if the fluid is being changed regularly (but it can't hurt). If you are using a Premium ATF fluid, like Redline D4 ATF, I wouldn't worry about it now. Maybe later on down the road. It isn't mentioned in Mike Miller's Old School Guide, he just recommends the fluid every 30k.

And nice, we have a 2003. Love that car.

Gotcha, thanks for the additional info, I'll check into it. Neither pumps are making any noises, its just on my list of things to do. If its ever been changed, it was changed at the dealer while still under normal or extended maintenance. I think that ended in 2009. We love the CRV too, better half purchased it new before we met. We were considering a 2015, but while we appreciate the new tech and safety features there are a few things its lacking that our 2007 has that have made it a deal-breaker. No car payments is nice too. Maybe the 5th gen will be worth another look, but rumor is the next Tiguan will have 3-rows, I hope the CRV doesn't go that route or else we will have to look at an RDX or some other alternative.

I actually ended up doing almost the same thing. I just kept toying with the boot until the kink was a bit smaller. And very good idea with the AFE. I think I'll start looking at the heat shield as well. Heck, if it comes down to it, building another heat shield shouldn't be too difficult.
