what wheel cleaners do you guys use? id say probably my LEAST favorite thing is cleaning the ZHP wheels. i currently just use soapy water and a small sponge pad used for bug removal normally to clean the wheels/inbetween the spokes but it always leaves a layer of dirt/brake dust on the barrel in places you can't stick your hand.

products you use for cleaning/brushes/etc?

P21S wheel cleaner and two wheel cleaning brushes. I bought them from detailed image. Definitely recommend buying the brushes at least.

What was the reason for the smog? Transfer of title?

Biennial smogs are tied to the cars registration date and the transfer of title smog does not count if it is after 90days since last smog.

Washing with warm water doesn't help the fact that the car still needs to get dried... Cold, wet microfibers FTL! This is why I don't wash my car in the winter. :(

Charlie and BP turned me on to the BMW wheel cleaner. Works pretty good. The spray bottle sucks though.
Otherwise, I use sonax wheel cleaner. Pricey, but works well.

John, I'm impressed that you went the extra mile and took out everything to change out the CCV! At least you got to take a look at everything that you normally never get to see. Well done on the CCV by the way.

On another note, I performed surgery on Patrick's ZHP headlight assembly and restored full factory lighting. It's sort of like an eye doctor doing a cornea implant on a patient. Patrick will now be able to see clearly at night while driving :thumbsup

Thanks all! You don't have to take the manifold off but William suggested it to help look for oil leaks and to see if there was any around from the bad CCV, and there was a LOT! Plus, in the end it did make it easier for the CCV but I had already started to put it back in before he got there. It sure made it easier to put the cold weather stuff on the CCV - not a bad idea to have it just in case I go to the mountains in Ness.

I too had my CCV replaced today after it froze up twice in 2 weeks almost blowing up my valve cover. The guy was a pro and took 4 hours to do the job, while pulling the manifold. What a garbage system; I cut it up at the junction of the two circle pieces - mayo everywhere. What a difference in crankcase pressure and exhaust no longer smells like 0W40. I'm seeing significantly improved MPG as well.

Old CCV was stamped 2006 - not sure how it lasted so long in the winters we have here. PO claimed it had been done in 2011 :facepalm

Shawn,

For fogs you need the 9006 bulbs. DDM Tuning have them to sell. I'm assuming this is what you're asking for but if that's the case then go with the 35W kit. If you're retrofitting 55W for the main headlights then you will need D2S bulbs. The bulbs DDM Tuning sell are not the same quality as the OSRAM D2S bulbs but based on pricing they are fairly good bulbs. I have had them on my ZHP over 3 years now and I'm currently running 6000k bulbs (D2S and 9006) with no issues in light output :thumbsup

Thanks. That is exactly what I was asking. So you like the 6000k bulb over the 5000k as far as color? John recommended 5k--maybe there is not too much difference. And we don't need any of the other options like mounting bracket, harness, error eliminator or adapter cables, correct?

So far the higher the temp, the bluer/purple the light becomes.

I've found from my experience in multiple HID bulbs in reflector units that color is higher temp looking than in a project which controls the light.

It seems like my 6000K 9006 fogs in OEM reflectors is much more blue/purple than my 6000K in headlight projectors.

I have 4300K in reflectors in the family minivan which is just as white/blue as my 6000K in projectors.

Maybe HID bulb quality is a factor here. Not sure. Both 35 watt HID kits I bought are from DDM tuning and the D2S bulbs I use in my headlights are Philips Ultinon and OSRAM Xenarc's.

I've got 5000K in my projector headlights right now. If I ever need to change bulbs in my HID fogs, I'd put 4300K in them as they cast a blue/white color onto the ground through the reflectors.

UdubBadger

4300 is a nice tone. 6000 on some bulbs gets purplish

I'm running the DDM slim ballast 35W 9006 6000k HID kits for both my BMWs.

There are no modifications necessary to install the 9006 HID bulbs into the fogs. The 5000k bulbs are more white than the OE (4300k) bulbs. More of a whitish-yellow color but more on the white side.

No need to purchase error eliminators for fogs. I don't have them. No mounting brackets either. 3M double sided tape is all I used. I did route a seperate wiring harness for my fogs however. I recommend doing this :thumbsup

depends on what you're after. If it's for form and function then go with the 6000k bulbs. They are whitish-blue but not too blue...more on the white side. The 5000k bulbs are on the opposite side being more white but on the yellow side... the 5000k will provide more light output (distance) than the 6000k. Either should look okay. Right now I'm on the 6000k side.

Nice Ben! As for Ness, passed SMOG today. First time failed and the guy said code indicates thermostat/running cold. So I changed the thermostat (the later the CCV), and went in for a re-SMOG. I was a little nervous because I didn't REALLY know if changing the thermostat would fix it so I was relieved when it passed.

Late responses here guys, my bad, spent the weekend working on the future mother in-laws house, it never seems to end.

A Honda is always a smarter choice than a BMW, even if it isn't as much fun. :)
Hope you guys enjoy the new one - whenever you get it. lol

The itch has passed, we haven't even driven one yet but started noticing things missing and different from our 2007. We have this sturdy shelf in the back cargo area about 12" up from the floor, it nearly doubles the cargo capacity, shorter things under it, taller things on top. They removed this from the 4th gen but have added a retractable vinyl cover to conceal your cargo. Um, thats what tint is for, give us the shelf back! Additionally, ours has an extra "glovebox" I guess you could call it a split glovebox, thats gone and for no apparent reason, there is most likely just dead space behind the dash where they could have put one. Not so important, but the rear seats no longer tilt or slide to adjust because they added handles in the trunk that will auto-fold the rear seats, we don't really need that. Lastly, our EX-L Nav has a low console between the front seats, and seat-mounted arm rests. We have two Chihuahua's and what we do is build them somewhat of a pillow "bridge" from the front of the car to the back. The 2015 has a huge/tall center console with a padded armrest on top, this just wouldn't work as well with our pups. Perhaps we can look at a BMW SAV in a few more years, or wait an check out the 5th gen CRV due out either mid 2016 or mid 2017; maybe we'll be better off financially in a few years (one can only hope).

If you're looking for reliable, the last thing you want is an X3. Go for the honda!
BTW if you need front rotors for the 2007, Kristen has a set in our garage that she really wants to get rid of...

How do they look? I've been given the thumbs up to do the ~$1k of maintenance on the current CRV.

Truth.... I have a friend who have had nothing but issues with her X3. In fact she ended up trading it in and got talked into getting a newer one. She is now having issues with her newer X3 :facepalm Seeing her go thru this only convinced me to never consider getting an X3....

Sorry to hear that, I have two friends with first gen x3's that have had hardly any trouble out of them. Our local dealer has tried to take advantage of my sister a few times, wanting to charge her something like $120 to replace the cabin air filter while she had it in there (with a coupon) to have the brake fluid flushed. Shady. I hope that is not what is actually happening with your friend. Luckily she called me and asked "What does a cabin filter have to do with brake fluid?" Haha, apparently the service advisor turned red in the face at that point and got pissed.

Wow, lots of hate for the X3... That is unfortunate! Admittedly, the first gen X3 is perhaps one of the worst vehicles BMW made, but 2012+ F25 X3 is a great vehicle. Ours was trouble free while we had it. On the flip side, a Honda is definitely a wiser financial decision.

But let me ask you... Are you a car enthusiast or not?! :biggrin

I am, the better half, not so much, I found a first year 2nd gen x3 28i (When it was still the naturally aspirated I6, asking $34k, had 30k on it, and nearly no options). The 2015 CRV Touring ($33,650, most people are paying $31,500) has every option available on the X3 (projectors instead of HIDs though, but this x3 had halogens and of course a 4cyl vs I6), plus a host of safety features that the x3 doesn't have. I know its apples to oranges, but at this point in our life it doesn't make sense to pay more for less. We'll see what is available for comparison in a year or two, perhaps it will make more sense then and/or we'll be in a better financial situation.
_____

Finally drove mine yesterday for the first time since last Friday, missed her. I had planned to wash her at work last night, but the better half showed up with dinner and a hissing front tire on the CRV, must have just picked up a nail bringing me dinner. That kept me busy for the rest of my shift.

I just need to rebuild the fuel injection system with new lines and injectors. Then go from there. I will definitely be bugging yourself and the legion for advice and help. Nice. I did post a thread but it hasn't been updated in a while. Right now I'm gathering parts to build a new engine because I'm tired of the 1.8 K-Jet setup. My base will be an E30 M10, but will be bored/stroked to 2L and higher compression pistons, and running Volvo fuel injection from a 740GLE.

Do you have a 2.0 or 1.8? If you have a 1.8 I may have some parts you want once I take my engine out

RDX?

I started to look at the RDX too but realized it was due for a face-lift, sure enough, it will be revealed at the Chicago Auto Show too. So its a possibility, its supposed to get the LED headlamps that all the other Acura's have now and most likely will get all the safety tech from the CRV Touring, the v6 would be great compared to the CRV's I4.

I thought they were used, new is even better. For sure they are for a 2007 CRV? Not sure if they were different for different models, but this is an EX-L with Nav, knowing Honda, they are probably all the same. Shoot me a PM, shipping would be to 38103 (Memphis, TN). Thanks!!

---

Of course a beautiful Memphis day would turn cloudy, windy and cold just as I head to work. I guess the car wash will have to wait another day. On the plus side, the tire shop did not charge a dime to fix two tires with nails in them, check the balance on two wheels and re-balance two wheels that someone put weights on the face of the wheels (idiots). Also nitrogen in all tires including the spare. We didn't buy the tires from them, but they mounted and balanced them for us. Crazy good service.

I think that SUV has the most bang for the buck now that they added the 3.5L V6 to it. Tbh I even liked the old turbo I-4 version too. It's also a touch larger than the cr-v now (even though it's the same vehicle essentially). Perfect size. Woulda likely gotten one if I wasn't getting a discount on the Honda or needed maximum cargo space for work.

My sisters Mom (long story) has one and loves it, she had a Lexus RX prior and while it was nice, she said it was like driving a blender. Enjoy the Pilot, our room renter that will be leaving soon (not soon enough) bought one a few months back, he loves it. I'm excited to see the new Pilot, face lifted RDX and even the new Ridgeline though they haven't confirmed when they will reveal the Ridgeline yet. My guess is the next major auto show after Chicago. Some good friends of ours always go to the Chicago auto show and I went with them back in 2010, but this year they decided to go to Puerto Rico and were tagging along. Part of me wishes we were going to Chicago, lol.

No problem, I'll be glad to help. Do you have emissions testing where you live? I have a set of euro 1.8L 9.5:1 pistons if you're planning a rebuild anyways, my afm has less than 2k miles on it, and I have braided fuel lines from a VW that I won't need anymore after I build my new engine. I'll have to look and see if I have anything else interesting. I might have access to another front euro bumper, but I'm still waiting on confirmation for that

Edit: if you want some period correct, proper offset wheels I can get these 14x6 ATS' for $900

I don't have emissions testing here thankfully lol. I am planning a rebuild in the future. My primary concern right now is assessment and triage of needed repairs and replacement as it's been a long time since I've had a wrench to it.

And those wheels look awesome! It's on the OE mesh wheels right now. Current plan is to refinish those when the time comes. My plan is to bring this back up to stock with a few mods and resto mods here and there. Then eventually make the ZHP a garaged car with the E21 as the daily.

I taped with painters and moved on. Not sure I would want to spend that kind of time removing the trim. Qtips or a microfiber should work for small places. I used my hands with microfiber for the door handle area which worked pretty good with M205/105.

SB is excellent. In my opinion, it's the way the car should have been setup from the factory. Zero fly by wire drag now. Driving it on Red (highest most responsive setting). Car responds immediately and completely different now. Feels brand new. :)

Dane, I installed SB Kpro gave me for Christmas. I agree... It's just like the sport button in our F30. The green setting seems to make the biggest change from stock with the red setting adding more.
Neat trick, on a strait road with no traffic, hold the throttle at about 1/8 with SB off then then turn on green, you'll feel an immediate surge and you'll see exactly how much it changes the stock throttle position.
I got this to install...

Not ZHP related but still a BMW.

Just had my S.O.'s '03 530i once every two year Cali smog. And every time I have one of my horses smogged, it is always something new. As for beginning of 2015, all 2000 and above vehicles will not go through the smog like what we used to go through. Everything is computerized and wireless. My regular smog guy had to purchase a new machine at $5000 a pop. Smog all took just 5 min. All he had was this handheld computer that he plugs in to the BMW OBDII terminal. And 5 min later....all done. All results went straight to Sacramento. So fast I didn't even have a chance to take pics since I was waiting for the standard hookups with all them wires and running the car at different speeds. This is one machine that cannot be jerry-rigged for different results. Once plugged, technician does not have any control.

Coby wheel offers the armrest cover in either grey or black alcantara material. No leather option.

The grey matches the factory grey used on the steering wheel and boots. I went with black and red/blue stitching but you can also just do black stitching.

Changed out my center console, cup holders, and coin tray for new ones I got in from the mini parts store! The ten years of abuse made my car feel cheap! The new ones make it seem like a new car inside!

Threw in a new fuel filter this morning.

Takeaways:
1) you'll likely make up the time it takes to get it on jack stands rather than ramps.
2) get a respirator. Very glad I had one on hand
3) either clamp the passenger side rear hose or have the new filter ready to slap on. The others don't leak as much. A little pressure was left in the front, but not much. Could have released it at the Schroeder valve, but meh.

Yep! They started using this system I think back in late 2013 or so. So much nicer than the dyno and a lot faster!

I just had my car smogged in December. Still using the old method.

Come to think of it.. When I saw the shop use the obd2 plug in only method they said it was a test to see if they loose the dyno test for cars post 2000 or not. Maybe the start of 2015 they implemented it all over CA?

Installed an E39 wiper stalk, wired and coded it so that the "S" button activates the headlamp washers. This way I can independently control when I need them instead of waiting 5 tries or whatever. Of course I've since discovered that my driver side headlamp washer is just leaking under the hood. Even the passenger side doesn't seem to be spraying as strongly as it should. That could just be because of the pressure loss on the driver side though

Now that it's finally MINE, I can start doing some things! Installed the leather sport steering wheel I got from Bill (Illirep), checked the spare, added air as needed, cleaned it and the trunk. Had to drill the license plate bolts to get the plate off for the seller, so I 'rebuilt' the bracket, put 3 coats of wax on the surface behind the plate, and installed my new plate. Hoping next weekend to do the cooling system refresh - Stewart water pump with ECS aluminum pulley, new expansion tank & thermostat, new idler pulleys and new tensioners.

Got some good news from the seller - valve cover gasket and oil filter housing gasket were recently done, so don't have to worry about those for a while (I hope!) He also had the radiator replace a while back, apparently it had a small leak.

Uggh....long list!

Rebuilt DISA with GAS kit - it needed it, flapper was loose on the shaft (rotated freely) and the pin had just started to come out.
Removed and cleaned idle control valve
Replaced water pump (Stewart) w/ECS aluminum pulley, thermostat, expansion tank, idler pulleys, and tensioners.

Getting the lower intake boot off was a bitch...both clamps were oriented in a way that made it nearly impossible to get them loose. Took a good hour just for that... Also, the bolt head on the hydraulic tensioner was fubbared, so I couldn't get that off - had to cut the belt, then remove the tensioner with the pulley in place, also a bitch! THEN, the new pulley wouldn't work because I couldn't fit a socket into the recess to go on the new hex-head bolt I bought. Did fit in the old pulley though, so that will work until I get a replacement bolt that works with the new pulley.

So, it took all day, but I have a rebuilt DISA, a cleaned/functional idle control valve, and a refreshed cooling system. Other than replacing trans & diff fluids, I think I'm up to date on preventive maintenance! Now, if we could only get decent weather to drive the car in... :(

Not ZHP.

Either way......Sold my family school bus last week. Turned around bought a 2003 Nissan Crew Cab short bed. Need this to go up the rough hills for the range. Been on the market for a truck just for the range. In the meantime, been doing the maintenance for rough duty ahead. The truck will probably need hazardous duty pay weeks ahead.

Started changing my VCG. Came off mostly in one piece but there was a fingernail size chunk that decided to hide in the valve train. The gasket around the spark plug holes were more brittle and each one came off in about 3 pieces. Used the excellent diy video by one of the family as a reference.

The torque spec for the VCG bolts is quite low, around 8 lbs-ft. The advice I saw on other forums is to tighten them until they stop turning and then firm them up just a little. Use 1/4" drive, tighten gradually in a spiral pattern, and don't forget the 4 bolts in the middle. Make sure to use new rubber grommets on the bolts.

Curious why the guy in the video says the coils need to go back in the same order. True?

I have been careful to number mine - but later when I have been testing or replacing I lost all care about having in original order - so, the answer is no, not important

Thanks. I'm getting ready to replace mine and I don't see how it makes any difference if they are all the same out of the box.

I numbered them and put them back in the same hole. I figure it can't hurt doing it that way. :)

The only reason to number them would be to make any troubleshooting easier if a problem occurs after taking them out.

Thanks- good input. Have new grommets ordered... 8lbs is a surprise, yes. Will go easy. Kindly, J

Waxed the Pilot today at work. She's shiny now (instead of caked in road salt).

I think I finally sourced a BBS duckbill for the 320, the only thing holding me back is knowing this looks damaged and the fact I want the Motorsport duckbill more. Problem is the M one is even more impossible to find than the rare BBS one

Edit: it's only $150 so I might just buy it and sell it later

Still haven't got a response to my message to that guy :(

Today I pulled my long tubes out of storage. I'm thinking about chopping it at the collector and having a new one welded in but with 2.5" outlet pipe (I think currently it's 2"). Need to weld in an O2 bung as well
