To be honest, I'm kind of "used to" the power now, so it feels tame. I'll be working on a custom set of AFE scoops as those aren't offered either. Its a shame too, that was one mod I LOVED on my ZHP, so cheap and easy, yet a noticeable gain under the right conditions...

As for making an "intake", nah... The OEM setup is pretty direct as it is. The OEM air filters are a 2 stage system, first a standard paper filter and then charcoal filters. A lot of the guys remove the charcoal filters, which I did last night. Sooner than later, I'll be ordering the K&N drop in filters and swapping those in. That'll be the extent of my "intake". :thumbs

did I post this? I don't remember... BMW E36 M3:

New Z3M radiator (old one was 7 years old -- new one from Autohaus AZ)
Stewart water pump (OEM Bimmer Parts)
Mechanical Fan delete kit: 80°C thermostat, lower temp electric fan switch, and water wetter (didn't install water wetter)
Emergency rear fender lip roll at track (local fabrication guy with a hammer)
Oil pan with pre-welded oil baffle (HARD Motorsports)
Oil pump shaft/sprocket/gear upgrade kit (Achilles Motorsports)
Replaced rod bearings "while you're in there" (indie mechanic's recommendation)
12mm BimmerWorld spacers on front. Bought them Christmas 2013 for the ZHP, ended up using them on the E36 M3 (ideal for these wheels would have been ~8mm)

To be honest, I'm kind of "used to" the power now, so it feels tame.

This is a very good point, lots of car people just don't understand how I continue (for nearly 9 years) to drive a stock (performance wise) 235hp (when new) almost 12 year old car, AND LOVE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!

It's all about perception, this is also why I've never asked (or taken an offer from) any of my friends with 335i's or e46 M3's to drive their cars. Sure I've ridden in them, but driving is different than riding.

Sure, I'd love to have either of those or even an x5 M, but my old ZHP is paid for and still a hoot to drive.

We all have discussed this before, but each time I drive a newer/new car (BMW, Infiniti, any of them) I'm always underwhelmed by the driving feel and overwhelmed by the amount of fancy, unnecessary and/or distracting features.

I honestly don't know. If you have an oil pressure gauge--ideally with a low pressure alarm or warning light--you can see if your oil pressure is dropping. I do hear it's most likely in hard, sustained left handers on track or when trail braking hard and turning left at the same time, as the oil sloshes forward and to the right of the pan. There are all sorts of stories and guidelines on the interwebz, including...

Every E36 and E46 needs one at the track
Only good drivers on R-comps or slicks need them, and only when turning left a lot
You can just overfill by a quart and that's good enough
The baffle is not good enough if you drive hard, you need the S54 oil system swap or a dry sump system
Get a sensitive oil pressure gauge and figure out if you need one or not
AutoX is unlikely to require one because you rarely have fast left-handed sweepers
A day of hard braking into left-hand turns will destroy your bearings without a baffle

I will say I saw a photo of the stock E46 (non-M) pan baffle and saw the stock baffle in my E36 M3 pan, and the stock E36 M3 baffle looks pretty substantial, surprisingly similar to the aftermarket one I bought. While the stock E46 non-M baffle looks tiny and ineffectual.

Nice batch of work. At what point in one's autocross/tracking should you look into an oil pan baffle?

I recently instructed at a car control clinic where I got to ride in an E9x M3, newer M5, new Mustang V6, 335 something, E46 330ci, plus a Honda minivan (fun in the slalom!). I certainly envied the high-powered cars on the skid-pad exercise when they could slide the rear just by hitting the gas, whereas I could barely break my rear tires loose (255mm Michelin PSS) if I threw the car sideways to upset it. But for cornering and driving feel, I was not jealous at all of the high-HP cars, at least not from the passenger seat--I didn't drive any of the students' cars.

yeah, i am sure i will find that out, if i even get to that point - i haven't driven an E9x platform car yet. i know the slow steering will suck. i know the car payments will suck. but i washed and wax my car yesterday - and while she's a dang good 10-footer - i can't help but want to repaint the entire car because i've got paint chips and tiny bubbles on various panels, and i'd rather paint it than let it rot... but i don't know if i want to spend $1500 on a respray (i have a good friend who will do a fabulous job for that price), when the car is maybe only worth $10K.

i dunno. a 20-minute test drive would reveal the answer.

Thanks buddy! It's all in my Dr's hands now, and I'm confident in him.

As for how much I have spent in mods/maintenance, I really don't have an exact figure. It's a fair sized number. Comparable to my cars in the past, but I really don't drive it enough anymore. I think over the past year I've put 3500 miles on the car. Luckily for me, it's my second car.

Anxious to hear how your test drive went/goes. My desire for the wagon was quenched when I found a pristine 07 530xiT, BSM/Auburn with sport, premium and winter packages and only 30k on the clock. You said the low beam isn't "firing up," is this with a HID headlight? I had an ignitor that took years to finally go dead completely. Sometimes I could flick them back off and then back on quickly and it would fire up.

Sounds like it's not coded properly. Based on your error codes, it seems like it's coded as a sedan LCM.

I was thinking that as well, I'll check it out next.

You said the low beam isn't "firing up," is this with a HID headlight? I had an ignitor that took years to finally go dead completely. Sometimes I could flick them back off and then back on quickly and it would fire up.

If you have halogens, then please disregard this post.

--Marcus

It wasn't the ignitors, I swapped those. I even swapped the entire headlight housing from side to side and the problem stayed on the passenger side of the car. The problem is within the LCM

Replaced water pump on ZHP due to suspected slow leak. Put in the Geba I got 3 years ago with ECS Tuning my cooling refresh kit! It turns out my car really did have an EMP Stewart pump, but it had signs of leakage at the weep hole and the O-ring was squashed so possibly not seal well around the pump. I guess expecting the Stewart to outperform leak free for 6+ years might be asking too much despite its lifetime warranty (which I can't claim since I'm not the originally purchaser).

Yea but I live in a 750sq ft apartment that I have the privilege of paying $1800 a month +10% more each year. My fiancé has been very patient with the whole deal (storing 4 arc-8s until I got them on. Storing the style 135s until I sold them). We kinda want normal usage of our 2nd room closet back :(

Im not sure I can pay to fix them and sell them and break even.

One ZHPM member was interested and looked at photos of them. He said it was too risky; thinking they're unfixable.

Was at the dealer today picking up a loaner car (2014 320xi) because the mechanic fixing our x5 went home sick today, we won't get the x5 back until Monday at the earliest. While waiting my parts counter guy offered up the BMW window scraper/snow brush, only $19.99, I declined as we already have one in the x5. Then he punched the calculator, said we should have them for the other BMWs, offered them to me at 30% off list, I'm a sucker, grabbed 2 for $28 (plus sales tax).

Nothing! I haven't had a wrench on my car in over a month and it feels great!

This is all just a dynamic ruse of course... because within this maintenance free month, I had to add a little coolant, the sunroof shade has gotten all jammed up and acts ridiculous when opening the sunroof, and the passenger side door lock actuator seems to be getting sticky at times.

I tried. I tried real hard to tell myself that all is well but she took the wind out of my sails right on cue as always. She keeps me on my toes. Never fails.

I dunno, it's pissing me off. The passenger side low beam does not fire up. I have had to fall back on my old trick of unplugging the driver's side until the passenger side kicks in. I guess the next step is to clean all my grounds.

It doesn't, I'm just saying that is the technique for resetting it. It might solve your issue and since it's easy to do you might as well try

Disconnected & short both cables for reset. SOS. No change.

I know that feeling. My sunroof has issues (takes 2-5 attempts for it to close), I ruined my c pillar fabric, and this weekend I discovered the bracket securing the power steering feed line (from the pump to the rack) is broken!

Finally got some time to put a few tools under the X5. Quick back story...

So, we purchased the thing literally on our way to Key West for Labor Day weekend. We start driving South from home in the 328d, and stop about 50 miles South to trade/pick up the X5. After the swap, we continue South. All is good for the 4 hours until we get into downtown Key West. We hit the little streets and alleyways and the minute we start hitting the bumps, a rattle under the front end, feels like passenger side... What the hell... I'm freaked out, and pissed... How did I not see this or notice this on a test drive, given that I even test drove long enough to find railroad tracks... NO rattles then...

Fast forward to tonight. I put my jack under it to see if my 10 year old Craftsman aluminum jack would even lift the behemoth X5. It did... Awesome... So, I decided to swap the swaybar endlinks that I picked up a week or so ago (determined this to be the most likely culprit after reading forums).

I also cleaned the rims and front brakes while I was in there. And then a quick test drive... And... Rattle is GONE!!

So happy! :thumbsup

Not always the case. A simple cut and polish does not remove enough of the clearcoat to where the orange peel is not visible. Wetsanding levels the clearcoat finish and buffing it returns the gloss back to it.

What's orange peel?

Orange peel is a type of effect that appears on the finish of automotive paint. It resembles the same texture as an actual orange peel. There is a couple of reasons to why it happens even on brand new cars.

Dropped the X at the dealer today for an oil service as the indicator popped up on the dash. While I was there and my Advisor was plugging everything into the computer, he notified me that it was also due for spark plugs, so they'd need to keep it over the weekend. Sounds good to me!

So, got a courtesy car for the weekend, brand new black on black 2015 X5 35i. Its by no means an ///M, but it has plenty of pickup for the everyday driver. Its not a sport model, but its pretty well appointed and it has all of the brand new technology items that I miss from our 2014 328d. The biggest thing I noticed is that the steering is incredibly light compared to the E70. Anyone that has driven an E70 will know how heavy the steering is on that model...

Anyway, stoked for more maintenance on the X.

That's the URO expanding pipe in the first pic. 14 hours is the general consensus for DIY, indy shops charge about $2k but I don't know how many hours that works out to.

To replace with an OEM pipe you have to take the cams and cylinder heads off and then the front of the engine block, dealers estimate 60 hours labor and roughly $9500 total!

...are both covered by this. Stephen hit the nail on the head. Its my youngest brother's car. He recently graduated from USF (Tampa) and moved to Houston for work. He bought a pickup truck to have out in Texas (Chevy SS) and didn't want to bring the S2K out there, so it was put into storage in Tampa. He wants to sell it, so I offered to pick it up and keep it in my area so it would get noticed, and I'd also sell it. Plus, it helps us out as right now we only have the X5 for my wife and I.

Love to hear more about your S2k.. AP1 or 2?
Absolutely. Its an AP1, MY 2000. Its white with the awful red interior, but he swapped it out to the two tone black/tan. From what I understand, white with tan is pretty desirable (much like the amazing Alpine White/Natural Brown... :biggrin) The car is mostly stock, with a few upgrades. It has an OEM hardtop, a molded front lip, lowered on coilovers, a set of Enkei RP01 wheels (17s), K&N intake, and a Magnaflow exhaust. Aside from that, it has a rebuilt head with AP2 valvetrain and hardware (an upgrade from AP1 from what I understand), and a new clutch/flywheel. The thing runs like hell and is fun to drive, but holy hell it is unforgiving. Extremely stiff and the short wheelbase makes it crazy tail happy. Needless to say, it gets driven very gently when its wet outside. :biggrin

Tomorrow I'm taking it to the local CCA Cars n Coffee (at a BMW dealer no less!) :shift so maybe I'll grab some pics amidst all the ///M vehicles. :rofl

White on red is an extremely desirable color. The AP1's red interior I don't care much for, but I wish my AP2 had red since they toned it down a lot in the later years. The hardtop alone is worth 3-4k as well, so most people sell that separately. That car would sell pretty damn quick in Houston I imagine.

JupiterBMW
12-05-2014, 05:41 PM
Huh, yeah, the red in this car was not only ugly, but it wasn't in the best condition either. And yes, the hardtop is super valuable. It'll sell pretty well here as well, and the car is already here.

New power steering pump, cooler lines, hoses, clamps washers etc.. for the M3. In the process of re-installing the new intake manifold, all new vacuum lines and gaskets. Really should have done a fan delete, looks like I will do it very soon. New cats and muffler is ready to go in, just need exhaust gaskets.

Nothing special to even show. A photo of a clean car that has minor body damage and scuffs all over it (wife is not the best driver, I've come to terms with the car not ever being "pristine")? It's also 35 and overcast out and I live in a converted loft building in a downtown area of a suburb next to Chicago with 200,000 people in it (town not building).

It's nothing even close to picturesque or even worth the memory it would take up on my phone. If it was - you'd have a photo (which I do take on occasion).

Thanks guys! And yeah, it wasn't too bad...figured it's probably the last all out wash I'll do unless we have some "freak" warm days over the next few months. Probably end up taking her to a regular car wash later on to keep the underbelly clean, and there is a big difference between doing this in +/-44 degrees vs. +/-20 degrees.

Completed a months-long suspension refresh process that started with slow-but-steady accumulation of the required parts and a Thanksgiving weekend marathon session in the garage. Replaced front and rear struts/shocks with Sachs OEM, front/rear mounts with Lemförder and Sachs OEM, front and rear Gen. BMW strut/shock reinforcements, replaced a mismatched front spring with a ZHP OE from WOLFN8TR (thanks again, Gary!), upgraded to Z4M solid rubber offset LCABs, and refreshed rear swaybar bushings and front endlinks with Lemförder. After an alignment to spot-on factory ZHP specs (standard sport specs with front camber at -0.5°), she feels oh-so-much more taut and stable! I’m in love all over again!

Additionally, I now have a small box of leftover/spare bits that I’ll be posting up in the pay it forward thread soon.

Just installed the side bolsters to my drivers seat. Still got a lot of work to do to get everything 100% perfect. Going to replace the foam and alcantara when I get a chance to order some and have a second seat to actually have time to send it to a upholstery shop. I think I'm the only person on here with alcantara and side bolsters/lumbar support. More mods coming and it's not some you guys would likely try. :)

Don't mind how dirty things are. Will be cleaning everything up and getting new alcantara eventually for the upholstery shop.

I contact Scott who fixes these and the GM5 module and maybe a few other things. Turns out he lives about 40 miles away. I drive over there after work (in LA traffic). He was finishing up fixing something on some ladies E39 and comes over to my car.

"I dunno it just randomly stopped working."
*examines key* "hm, have you tried to sync it?"
"...Well...no...Thought that was just for new keys."
*he gets in the car and does the sync process. Key starts working again.*

Received my black cube trim today, bought off CL (thanks to BoostedZHP for posting the link!) It was in decent shape, with a few small scrapes - since I had to order some new hardware before I can install it, I figured I'd shoot a couple of light coats of paint on it. Used Rustoleum satin black, looks really good! Will take some before & after pics when I do the install, should look MUCH better than the brushed aluminum trim in the 330Ci!

Got a lot done, actually! Finally installed the Koni Sport struts on the 330Ci (did the rear shocks last weekend) I've actually had the parts for more than a year, just couldn't get around to putting them in. :rolleyes

I've read that new struts take a bit of time to 'break in' - what's the consensus of the experts here, is that true? Just wondering when it's safe to form a real opinion of the upgrade. Either way, it IS an upgrade....appears the old struts were original with 102K on them!

Also got my dash trim swapped out from the brushed aluminum to the black cube pieces I bought. Huge improvement, in my opinion... Sorry for the crappy pics - the trim isn't as shiny as the flash makes it appear. Will try to get better pics in natural light, but it looks very nice with the Rustoleum satin black.

I think I've heard as much as 5-10k for suspension to settle. That always seemed high to me.

Mine took about 10k; or I just got used to it. Lol

Drove to Manhattan with the GF to see some of her friends for the weekend, 26.77 MPG averaging 75 or so. Pretty pumped about that.
