Thanks everybody!

BP, the bumper isn't mounted 100% correct yet. I have to drill a hole in the frame rail to put another bolt to align it, I just haven't got around to it yet.

Bruce, I did give it to her but I drive it once in a while to make sure nothing needs maintaining.

Now I just need to figure out where I put the Koni stickers so I can put them on the strut tubes...

Yesterday my ZHP got an alignment. Before showed excess toe-in on fronts and slight toe-out on rear. Toe-in on front was not surprising as frame rails had been bent and straightened then one tie-rod replaced. I'd adjusted the front toe manually by driving feel and it turns out I had it almost exactly even, just much more toe-in than I wanted or expected. Was at +0.43° now at +0.14° total toe-in.

On rear, can't tell why I had the toe-out. Either it happened when I replaced all the rear control arm bushings and diff bushings, which means I did 4 track days with rear toe-out (including my fateful crash day in July). Or the accident itself caused the rear trailing arms to move to toe-out. May never know.

For the E36 I bought a used oil pan with baffle pre-installed (from Hard Motorsports in Oregon) and an oil pump upgrade kit with pre-pressed inner gear from Achilles Motorsport in Fresno, California. Was going to buy the refreshed+upgraded oil pump and reinforced oil pickup tube but they ran out both yesterday. Instead I will be taking apart my oil pump and replaced the inner gear, shaft, and sprocket. New one has stronger shaft and safety-wired nut. Since no welding is required now, I could replace it myself at rent-a-lift place, but might pay a shop to do it due to lack of time.

Yass_ZHP
11-05-2014, 08:46 PM
Well had a really rough day, I decided to run some errands during the lunch break and a pickup truck swerved in front of me and lifted a pretty big rock that was on the side of the road and it flew hit my bumper went under and opened up a hole on the oil pan :( luckily enough I pulled over and sure enough there was a trail of oil and it was pretty bad, had to call my insurance and tow Heinz to my Indie shop, hopefully I can get the parts if not, Heinz will stay out of action for a few days...

I have about a months worth of posts to catch up on in this thread, but wanted to share that I finally and successfully replaced the battery in one of my two key-fobs that has been dead for probably 2 years now. I had to re-code it to the car, but some instructions I had found awhile back and scree-shot for future reference did the trick on the first try, but the other key's programming was lost. The answer was in the next screen shot, basically just had to program both keys at the same time.

Woot!

In that same parts order, I ordered (and installed) a new windshield washer pump (did this last week) and strainer and still was unable to get any fluid to shoot out onto the windshield, the liquid would just kinda burble out, leading me to believe the nozzles were clogged up. So tonight, for whatever reason, my brain wondered if they would spray better with the hood open, when I tried this they sprayed like they should. Hood closed, no spray. So I started looking for a kink in the hose, sure enough, at the hood hinge the hose was being compressed with the hood closed. Snapped the hose back into the places it was supposed to be in and it works great. I guess tomorrow I'll swap back to the old pump to ensure it does work and then just list it on eBay to try to recoup some of that money I wasted buying a new pump if indeed the old one works.

Hoping to find the energy (and outside temperature compliance) to wash her tomorrow also and maybe even do a bit of pre-winter waxing. I'm working noon-midnight both tomorrow and Sunday so it would be a great time to get some stuff done on her (while on the clock of course!).

----

EDIT: Wow, caught up completed, that wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, 10 pages, 40 posts per page, done. Lots of great work going on, I wish I had time to do some of the things you guys are doing, keep it up!

Cop just handed us two forms and said for us each to fill in personal, vehicle and insurance info and swap the forms. If we didn't send them to our insurance company to verify coverage and they in turn send them to the DMV within 15 days our licenses could be suspended. I think he was mostly wanting to move on to something more exciting.

dane, those DO suck. what i typically end up doing is using my impact gun which helps break the rust bond pretty well - if that does not work (if the bolt head is rounding out), i pound a 1-size-bigger torx bit in and then use the impact. that almost always works.

Changed out my battery. Two questions:

1) should I use some kind of grease on the terminal connections (some older cars people recommend vasoline or grease). All the BMW DIYs did say that.

2) I lost my small screwdriver bit from the trunk it... it's somewhere "down there" under the battery box. What's the best way to get just that screwdriver. Buy new or are you all seeing pieces of trunk kits for sale in part-out cars?

Airbag recall: ran out of airbags yesterday. D'oh!
tire rotation: done. Front tires showing a little inner wear they they said. Tires are almost 10k old
Alignment: A few numbers seemed off but the tech specifically noted that he suggested replacing both upper support bearings and redoing the alignment, and caster being a degree off on both sides (but completely even). Also noted the wishbones and CABs look aftermarket. Not sure if those would have an affect on caster (thoughts from our resident suspension experts?). I can always add new OEM parts to my list for when I do my suspension refresh.

18x9 square rear wheels set up. This was my old summer set that had a wheel get cracked in half when I got hit this summer. Bought a new wheel and had it paint matched gunmetal and just decided to keep as winters with the 225 setup. Even in winter gotta be flush ;)

Nah, only about 8 people park down there and the rest of the spots are the building owners "toys". The owners nephew has a 335i he parks down there and is always working on so we both leave some stuff there. Tbh aside from the wheels there isn't anything of value up there other than some wax and microfibers and odd tools.

The tires fit fine, Blizzaks run a touch wide I think anyways. I did the same setup last winter and it was good. Extra weight of the rims helps keep the tires planted. ;)

If cost wasn't an issue, you could just buy the BMW leather by the yard (I think) and get a custom upholster job on it. I'd of course buy some cheapo Grey seats to do it on so you could at least sell the Imola to someone who really wants it. :)

good choice - there are some seats that can do both street and track fairly well. the recaro SRD that i've got can be a bit of a pain to get out of (in is not so bad), mostly due to the thigh bolsters, but it is a highly comfortable seat, and has shoulder harness slots. if i was going to DD/track a car, this seat would be my first choice - my wife didn't complain about it when i was using it years ago.

i'm 6'1", 190lbs, athletic build (32" waist) and find the recaro fit to be perfect. they are hard to "go and size up" so i hope this helps as a reference point. i think the newer recaro 'speed' seats are a bit wider.

Had RTAB pocket and rear swaybar mount reinforcements welded on for the E36. Swapped UUC blue transmission mounts in on the ZHP and moved the Bimmerworld solid poly transmission mounts from ZHP to the E36 (replacing stock transmission mounts on E36). The plan is to reduce NVM in the ZHP and reduce transmission movement in the E36 M3.

Edit: That should be reduce NVH, not NVM.

Nice! I want to get a set of Arc-8s in 17x9". Maybe next year. I meant reduce NVH = noise, vibration, harshness. Not "NVM"! The UUC blue (formerly red non-bolt-through) transmission mounts without enforcer cups have slightly less NVH than the BimmerWorld poly mounts with enforcer cups. (Not sure BimmerWorld sells them any longer.)

I do worry about the moneyshift issue. In the ZHP with stock mounts, I had trouble downshifting to 2nd gear in right-hand turns. Of course one answer to that would have been to finish downshifting in a straight line, before turn in. Trying to remember why it was an issue, maybe I also had trouble upshifting 2nd-to-3rd in those tight right-handers. Going to BimmerWorld solid rubber engine mounts and solid poly (non-bolt-through) transmission mounts eliminated shifting issues but gave me the "magic fingers" vibration at idle, especially when cold. The E36 is going to get either BimmerWorld solid rubber or AKG 90A solid poly motor mounts.

Not today, but over last 2 weeks I have been falling in love all over again with the way my ZHP drives. It was in the body shop for 3 months. It's just so nice...

Yesterday dropped the E36 at indie off for oil pan baffle, rod bearing replacements (since oil pan is off), swapping strut hats on Bilstein sport struts (more negative camber), oil pump upgrade, and alignment. Should be 7-9 billable hours of work and the most I've ever spent at once doing maintenance or mods (exceeded only by the ZHP collision repair). I was going to swap the strut hats myself yesterday but ran out of time so will just have to pay the shop to do that.

Stephen, where does it come close to rubbing, the inner wheel well, struts, or outer fender? Is it tight in front or rear or both? I have D-force LTW in 17x8.5 ET40 and they fit well on slightly lowered coilovers except for occasional rubbing areas
1) With 255mm tires, fronts rub on inner wheel well at full steering lock. Solved with 5mm spacer and going to 245mm tires.
2) With 255mm tires, rears rub on upper outer fender in hard turns. Initially solved by raising rear ride height slightly, currently solved with stiffer rear springs and using 245mm tires instead of 255.

I do have more negative camber than stock in front (-2.5 to -3.5 depending on plate settings), -2.0 degrees in rear. I think the 17x9" wheels are ET42. If I run them with 255mm tires, I expect I'll need 12mm spacers in front plus keep the wheels from rubbing the inner wheel well wall. Not sure how I'll avoid rubbing in back, maybe keep the stiffer springs with slightly higher ride height? Or make rear camber -2.2 degrees? But I know it can be done.

I've got a 1983 320i that has been a project for a long time. I got it running-ish a year ago but free time became a scarce commodity and I could never really get down to restoring it.

It was owned by an older fellow who lost the title. My original plan was to restore it a just file a lost title claim. Then it changed to making it a track car. Now I'm just tired of seeing the poor thing sit there.

The paint is faded, interior in decent condition but dusty. (welcome to NM) It's all original and was a great lil car. But, I just don't have the time or shop for it and by the time I do, it'll be a pile of rust in the desert.

Awesome. I remember reading somewhere (here maybe?) that the E46 stock brake bushings (slide pins) shouldn't be lubed. Anyone confirm that? I don't doubt that the brass ones may take lube (unsure of that as well). Just wanted to make sure if my previous is the case, that we don't lead someone astray.

"No flamesuit required"

I've never lubed those pins on my car. I've also never put anti-seize on the pads. Never had an issue with squealing.

to me, seems common sense to lube them, along with the tracks that the pads slide on, with high-temp brake lube. it's a sliding part where you absolutely do not want friction. an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and all that.

Bentley Manual-- Brakes; Caliper Removal page 340-10:

"Thoroughly clean all contact points on caliper and brake pad carrier. Clean guide bolts and make sure they slide freely. Do not lubricate guide bolts."

Sometimes lube attracts unwanted contaminants causing build up that can be detrimental to overall function. I suspect that may be the case here.

Yeah I remembered that the pins weren't supposed to be lubed, that's why I never did it. As far as pads go, I never had to lube them because I never had any noise, so I never did.

Those plastic caps don't always stay. On mine, one of them was very loose. I'm shocked it never fell out, but it wouldn't surprise me if it did.

Those pins are so smooth I wouldn't imagine friction to be a big issue with them. I believe they are designed this way on purpose.

Lame post.... maybe, but I did my snow tires install today with the help of Anti seize last swap, two jacks, a wheel stud tool and an 18 inch breaker bar..... damn it's a huge difference when you've got the right tools! Plastic dead blow helped tap one stubborn wheel and otherwise "swear free" job

They need constant attention with lube and also cause a slight shutter feeling upon braking. That could also mean my steering rack is going but I noticed it right when they were installed.

less caliper 'flex'. for a street car, as seth mentioned above with the constant attention and shudder, likely not a good choice.

Yeah they're a bit more solid for high speed braking on track. That's what I was ultimately building this car for but now seeing it's pointless as I would want bbk anyway. Was hoping to avoid spending that kind of money at first but you really pay for what you get. That being said if you keep up with them (and have a solid steering rack) it's a nice cheap brake upgrade.

Tire wasn't beaded correctly, went flat on me going 70 on lake shore drive and blew a chunk of the inner lip out so now I'm being told I need a new tire (wouldn't reinflate).

So my options are find a needle in a haystack 225/45/18 Blizzak to replace it - nobody has anything in stock or even a few days out in anything other than a WS80 and I run LM25s - older version. Or I can try to find someone with a new Dunlop or something else but does that mean I should get 2 or just run 1 mismatched?

oh man, what a day. I am out running errands and getting to know my new town. I am on my way to Home Depot and I just happen to come upon a AAA office. I decide to go in to update the address on my 15+ year AAA membership. The office is super nice, and everyone inside is incredibly friendly and helpful.

One woman changes my address for my membership, then asks if I want to update the address for my registration. Oh yeah, they do that, so I don't have to go to the DMV, thank goodness. Oh and your registration is up in January? No problem, we can take care of that right now too. No no, doesn't matter if you do not have the slip. Oh, you need a smog too? Well then, we have a smog station around back and we can do that and give you your tags today as well.

My god, I love AAA. I went from changing the addy on my AAA membership to that, updating the address on my car registration and drivers license, renewing my registration, smogging my car, and finally getting my tags. The smog guy even said "beautiful car. These are great cars." They didn't need to put it on the dyno either. He just plugged it in and looked under the hood quickly before gingerly putting it back down (hopefully admiring my M3 strut bar and BMW Perf intake), and that was it. 5 minutes. And yes it passed. If anyone is considering a AAA membership, this was totally worth it. They have a first rate operation and avoids the DMV.

This is kind of ZHP related, but I just joined Costco today too. Love it and yes I spent a decent amount (but saved money too!). I noticed they also sell gas. I asked the nice lady processing my membership if it was Top Tier and she said honestly she didn't know. Any thoughts on if their gas is good enough for our wonderful rides?

Well I took the day off to help me get settled in the new apartment. I was there around 3pm today. They might have hours like that. I didn't check to see how late/weekend hours. I have had dealings with a few AAA offices before, and I always remember them being pleasant and efficient, especially compared to the DMV. This just happened to be above and beyond. My move has been pretty stressful/tiring. It was nice to have something go super smooth.

Ok, well I will do some googling but for now I won't use Costco gas then. I got a Costco Amex and it gives 3% cash back at any gas station....I just hope shell, 76, etc. take Amex now. haha. I am used to VISA or MasterCard

I remember the guys at my Indy always wear gloves. I will double check next time I go there.

Today I relocated the aux input from the sunglass holder bin to the switch panel where the heated seat buttons are.

Oh I have gloves, but usually what happens is I start working on something and forget to put them on.

Updated the "coding" to get rid of 37* beep and allow starting without depressing the clutch.

Didn't you already (used to) have one?

The old Dinan TB belongs to JP (Hermes) now, it was installed on the mystic no-sunroof coupe. That car had exhaust, CAI, TB, custom tune, & 3.46 rear, it definitely livened it up. Brett's car already has the exhaust & CAI, TB will most likely be accompanied by a tune, last step will be a ratio change.

Not last step, the next logical step.

Wow, I had 4 pages of this thread to catch up on... Great pics, lots of great work going on... As for me, well, I get to update too!

I took her in to get washed today, and then hurried her home into the garage where I spent a little time on the details. Getting ready for a Cars n Coffee in the morning, so I wanted to do a little extra work. And then tonight I was feeling frisky, so I pulled the intake apart and removed the charcoal filters from the intake. Now its just the paper filters, and soon I'll upgrade those to K&N drop ins...

As for me today I replaced my washer fluid pump in the hopes that will stop the leak.

Also tried to fix my Dice Mediabridge with a FW Update but to no avail. Looks like it's dead.

Time for something new since the Dice always gave me some problems.

I'm going to look into the Grom Audio unit. Initial reviews look good.

Nooooo AFE for X5M... Surprisingly, aftermarket is insanely limited for this model.

If I was going navi it would be on the list but I'm going to stick with the business CD.

All I really want is USB and Bluetooth for calls and music.
