Was way lower on gas than I thought this weekend. The remaining miles indicator showed dashes, not miles. I put over 16 gallons in.
Also, dropped off Heiu's roller to Gary in Vegas.
Whoa that is low! Talk about cutting it close. Thanks again for bringing up the Roller I appreciate you dropping it off at my work. Next time we need to spend more time catching up.

The wire is prewiring for something. Not sure what...
I believe the other pump is a fuel transfer pump that pumps fuel from one side of the tank to the other.

Just found this on e46f
2 pumps in the tank.
Drivers side pump is passive, a siphon pump, rarely has problems or fails.
Passenger side pump is electric and is what usually has issues.
Still the factory pump in there?

I think it has been close to a year that the X has been to dealer. I have never made/found the time since then to reprogram the ESS tune and all the euro coding. (I waited a few months after last visit to see if DSC EDC and 4WD worked all the time - then it was finding a block of hours without Alex and decent weather and no other pressing projects)
Finally I can close windows and hatch from remote again. As well as about 25 other things
I look forward to a cool evening to experience the tune again

Always fun to get these multi-thousand dollar estimates. At least it saves me from doing the inspection myself.
VCG: Do it yourself, very straightforward. $45 for the gasket, $5 for RTV sealant. 2 hours at most. Good time to replace spark plugs and do VANOS seals.
Oil pan gasket: This is one where you'd want to have it done if you're not handy with a wrench. I've gotten estimates from my BMW-only independent mechanic for $600. Passed on it.
Power steering flush: Very straightforward. Need a turkey baster and 3qt of ATF (system takes one, but a proper flush will need to be done in stages). $45, 20 mins per "stage".
Coolant flush: rip-off. 1gal BMW antifreeze $20 + 1gal distilled water $1. Unscrew plug under radiator and block, let them drain in a bucket, fill and bleed.
These are very common jobs and there are detailed DIY's for every one of them on the web - apologies for my very succint instructions!
Tenoch

Thanks Alex for the response.
When I took her for inspection at a local indy german shop, I was quoted $500 for replacing the oil pan gasket. The mechanic told me, the oil pan leak was minor so I'm just saving up and taking care of other little cosmetic issues for now. He didn't mentioned anything about the valve cover gasket, I'll check tomorrow to see if there's any visual oil leak. I'm not familiar with bad Vanos I'll try to record some audio and post it on youtube to see if somebody can notice anything strange. I also have in my list to check and replace if the car has a plastic pulley.

Vanos rattle very easy to tell, you either have it or not. And yup, nice to get the list from the dealer so you know what to DIY.
I did the oil pan gasket myself. Not a bad job if you have a way to support the engine. No way would I pay that much money to have it fixed.

Met a friend of a friend who picked up a butchered 2005 6MT ZSP (it had lambo doors on it :shifty) for real cheap, and wants to fix it up for a fun DD. It needs a hood, trunk linings, and fenders (they were cut for the lambo setup).
We then made friends with a mechanic at the dealer who was on his lunch break. He gave us his number for $50/hr weekend side jobs :thumbsup

Where do I start for today.
First I am working overnights this week and thus have not had a lot if sleep.
After leaving work at about 7:15am headed to class I pulled up my shift lever while maneuvering in some crazy traffic. This is the 3rd (or more) time this has happened throughout ownership. So I had to be rough with it to get it into a gear to not get hit by a semi.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/03/ff71a1d7d1a5b6bf2618ad940397f279.jpg
On the way to class I removed the knob, boot, foam and rubber gasket. But was in too big of a hurry to take the time to attempt to get the bushing clicked back into place, but she did go back down correctly.
Then a guy at a stoplight told me he was going to come back and get me and take me to jail for driving too fast after he dropped his daughter off at school. My response was "good luck with that, I'm not a 10 year old like your daughter, I'm in my 30's." Laughed it off.
Got to school earlier than I thought I would (road construction is so hit or miss lately near school). Messed with the bushing got it clicked back in for now, changed clothes, scratched my front window tint putting my belt on the dash, probably took 10-15 minutes. Started to go to class and saw what I thought was a huge transmission fluid leak. Started texting my good ZHP buddy. Went to class.
Sent him a pic he was surprised at how big the now soaked into the concrete puddle was. Called a tow truck.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/03/f1da86767fb48eda17e94eca9d6d5c22.jpg
Rollback dispatch said the truck wouldn't get into the garage so I rolled the car out, curbed an already curbed wheel in the process. Waited with the car running and AC on, more fluid on the ground.
Rollback driver was pretty rough with the car. Kept telling myself it's just a car, a 11-year old car. It's going to be ok. E46 M3 passed us and then led us nearly all the way to my house.
http://tapatalk.imageshack.com/v2/14/09/03/bf0b69b1cf156a97a844dab98e5995b0.jpg
Car dropped off into my garage at home, let the dogs out. Got the car up on two jack stand and could find anything. Water on the trans cross member though. Surely it wasn't just AC condenser water. Put the car up semi-level on 4 jack stands, removed fill plug, and trans fluid started coming out. Transmission was clean and full of fluid, the "fluid" I saw must have been AC condenser water mixed with something already in the garage floor at school. Awesome.
Live and learn, I'll be more careful to watch for paranoia when on overnights in the future. At least the tow was covered, well most of it, they had to charge me $2.50 because the distance was over 11 miles. Showered and went to bed finally at about 12:15pm, about 3 hours late.

Yeah, how much is an e46 (or equivalent) 6mt going for these days? A couple of grand, right? Better safe than sorry, just wasted a lot of time. The more I think about it, the way the car was sitting in the parking garage at school possibly also had something to do with why the AC condenser water was dripping so far back. Talked to a few guys at work about it and they said their AC's will drip copious amounts of water in similar situations. Memphis is a very humid place, pretty much year round. Perhaps I just haven't ran my AC that hard/long in awhile either.

Yup, one of those days. I left her on the jack stands and stole the Better Half's CR-V. I have to take the new puppy to the vet today for shots anyway and the dogs do not do well in the ZHP. Going to look at putting on my adjustable end-links that have been in my floorboard for several months now as well as re-fill the diff since she is already in the air semi-level. Leaky SOB!

Yea, the M3 rear end needs some work. I need to tear it down and rebuild all the bushings on it with new OEM and in some cases maybe some new poly bushings, especially on the main diff housing bracket.
Yes, that is one of those elaborately named stewart pumps. I do like your "short and sweet" name by the way.

Personally, I do not recommend diff bushings to be poly; I'm severely regretting my choice to get poly bushings for the diff. Way too much noise and "clunking" going on with these bushings. :crying

Yesterday - filled leaky diff.
Today - finally installed adjustable end-links.
I was too lazy to do the whole put the car in the air thing but have the car's suspension loaded and adjust end-links as necessary. I installed them and started with them all the way short. What are the side-effects of short end-links?

I've honestly given up on that idea as it's pretty much impossible to find and the few people that have it don't sell. I looked into new price of the fabric from BMW and got rid of that thought right away (even with my ridiculous discount).

Installed my H&R 27mm front sway bar on Saturday. It was really quite easy until I lost my 16mm socket. It took about 30 minutes to find it. I only found it after lowering the car back down. It rolled next to the jack where I couldn't see it (But, ironically enough, you can see it in this photo I took before I realized it was lost.)
These wrenches were perfect in 16mm and 18mm sizes.
Pedro's Cone Wrenches (http://www.amazon.com/Pedros-Bicycle-Cone-Wrench-13mm/dp/B000IZGFD8)
I can't tell how much of a difference just the upgraded sway bar made as I replaced the front sway bar links as well, which were in pretty bad shape. The car drives and turns so well right now. It brought a big smile to my face.

Went over to Derbo's so he could show me GT1 and NCSExpert....I WANT! He coded comfort close with remote and turned off "window cancel when door opens" for me while we were in there.
I stumped him with this strange popping noise that my suspension is making under load (braking or starting off). End links? dry bushings? etc. who knows. I think I am going to have to take it in as the noise is getting worse.
Also, I believe we have solved the mystery of BMW's "fix" for the 4k power dip. I will let him explain.

09-09-2014, 02:37 PM
Is your suspension mystery noise a clunk or a true pop? I'm experiencing some dull thunks every once in a while since I installed my sway bar and for the life of me I can't figure it out. I used the H&R supplied bushings and didn't put any lubriant on the surface area that contacts the bar. But, I did put some anti-seize compound on the inside of the brackets that hold the bushings.
Could it be the sway bar just settling in? I checked the sway bar links and they seems to be very secure. I didn't touch anything else while I was under there.
SoCalZman
09-09-2014, 04:26 PM
it could be a pop. i could be a clunk. It really is hard to tell. I swear sometimes I can feel it through the flood of the car too. I will be driving the car again this weekend. I can put my phone on the floor with the audio recording and try to get this noise recorded for you guys. Its been happening for awhile now but I feel like its getting louder and happening more often. I don't feel like I am going to fall out from under the car but I think I should figure it out and fix it soon.
One of his guesses was bad end links. Some of the noises coming from under the car were/are pretty loud. Not sure how loud end links can be. Another guess could be dried bushings? The previous owner did replace the CAB before I bought the car. Maybe he did not install them right? I guess I need to get under the car and look around. That is hard to do when you live on a hill and don't own a jack. Haha.

My "thunk" turned out to be loose sway bar links. It was pretty loud when hitting bumps or imperfections/pot holes in the road. Good place to start checking for the noise would be to make sure those bad boys are torqued to spec. I tightened mine up and the noise is gone.

Picked her up from the Indy yesterday where I had the H&R Touring Cup kit installed along with a full boat of maintenance/preventative maintenance including the cooling system. I truly admire those that have the skills to do some of these tasks on your own. The fluids I could have handled but the combination of lack of proper tools, skills and time keeps me from attempting anything as in depth as the cooling system and kit installation.
Anyway...Wow! Am I impressed with the Touring Cup kit. Car rides and handles phenomenally. Not to mention the subtle drop that looks just right. I really didn't realize how at ~80k miles the stock shocks were beginning to go b/c she feels like a new car now.

Alright. Idiotic question here from some is who can't drive a stick... Why not just start in 2nd? The steptronics do, unless you're speed racer every time.

Zero torque starting off in 2nd, unless you rev it to 6000 RPM's.

09-12-2014, 07:58 AM
That or really slow take off due to a balance of not stalling the engine and unnecessary riding/heating a clutch. I've done it many times when I had something in my hands at a stop and the car was in second but sometimes I'd start off like I was a Pontiac Firefly with half my cylinders missing. LOL

Trucks would best use the 2nd to get the torque and at the same time pick up the speed due to heavy loads.

My dad's E39 540iA always starts in second if it's in regular "D" but if you put it in sport mode it'll always start in 1st. I assume this method helps smooth out the torque and energy transfer through the torque converter when a lazy and queen like acceleration feel is wanted.
stephenkirsh
09-12-2014, 01:44 PM
Steps also have shorter gearing to provide more torque off idle (3.64 diff)
Non zhp auto is "only" 3.46 diff.
Thx for non-flaming info, guys :)
stephenkirsh
09-12-2014, 01:45 PM
Yeah that's right. My 3.62 diff has no problem starting with 2nd compared to a ZHP's 3.07.
Default OEM settings.
It's a learning system, though. So if you mash it to the floor every time, it will start off in 1st upon stopping. Just depends on the driver.
I dunno. I drive the auto in manual mode 100% of the time. At a stop it kicks down only to 2nd, which is where I start from unless I tell it to go to 1st.

I had a short in my HID fog wiring harness on my ///M due to a bad HID ballast on my passenger's side so I replaced the entire HID fog setup with a brand new set from DDM tuning. The light output was amazing….I am still seeing dots as I type this entry…

When will we stop confusing automatic differential ratios with the M3 differential ratio?
Manual: 3.07
Automatic: 3.64
E46 M3: 3.62
Isn't this in the FAQ somewhere?
Sent from my GS3.
I got the car back together last Sunday, after sitting dismantled in the garage for weeks. After taking it to work a few days, I kept driving even with the significant chance for rain. This did heighten the justification of a good wash after the drive home in the height of the storm.
With that being said, today it got the much needed wash and for the time being it will stay just like this, until further notice.

Today I saw another Estoril e46 M3. Guy was a very enthusiastic owner. Unfortunately it had a grey interior...I just don't know why you spend the money on the paint from BMW Individual Program and get a lame ass grey interior. People are crazy. Gimme black, brown, cinnamon, cool M3 cloth...
Anyway, told him to buy shadowline gloss trim and silver cubes to replace his bubbling Titan II interior trim. He's saving up for oem CSL wheels. Car is gorgeous. No pics though as I was enamored with the color (I ran across the parking lot like a lunatic when I saw it rolling in lol) and we talked for a good half hour.

Hoping it was just the LED bulbs that have been in there for over a year. Nope!! Wiring in the elephant trunk, but I can't pull the rubber back far enough to temporarily fix it with a butt splice. How would the wiring be bad? due to aftermarket bulbs? or aftermarket trunk? Or previous accident/damage?

It's somewhat of a known issue from what I read, with the e46. I found a thread on it on the first page of the lighting section over on e46f. Over time the wires will break due to just opening and closing the trunk, apparently.

The way I do it is spray the Sonax before I do the rinse and dry on my car, and then, use this big-ass brush (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001GJ3DZS) with my remaining soapy water bucket to clean up the wheels. The Sonax loosens up the brake dust, and the brush cleans everything very well. It's taken a beating due to the 135M design, but it still works very well. Takes me ~10 mins to do all 4 corners.

Me too. The closer the headrest is to your head in a collision, the safer your neck will be. How do I know? Refer to posts I made at the end of January this year. LOL
yep i do too for the same reasons. that's what i was taught.

So just went out and looked at my car, turns out my headrests are equally forward :p it just looked weird from that angle I guess. My head is supported by the headrest at all times when driving.

the popping noise (see my thread for actual noise. I will update there as well) was my "subframe bolts". They were a little loose apparently. Very odd. I assume they mean the front subframe because thats where the noise was coming from but I will find out when I pick up the car this evening. Any idea how that could hapen?

Not torqued down properly to begin with and eventually come loose. That is the only way they back out...
Perhaps the subframe was removed at some point during or previous to your ownership.

Yeah maybe, Cant think of why. I have looked pretty closely around the car and never noticed anything that looks like accident repair or anything strange like that. I will be asking the mechanic lots of questions.

Has the oil pan gasket ever been changed? I think you have to take the subframe off to do that, right?

Well I have to take everything I said back that I got from the mechanics wife over the phone. I spoke with the mechanic directly and he said no, the bolts were not loose at all. They put the car up on a lift that goes under the wheels and then turned the front wheels to hone in on the sound. It was the subframe, but I am not sure exactly how it was making the noise. He said they reset the subframe and its bolts and the car is completely silent now for the first time since I have owned it. Very happy, and he only charged me an hour of labor.

Awesome mechanic! Glad you got it sorted out, and that it was nothing serious!
Today she got a much, much.........much needed wash. There is major construction where I work so the employee parking has just about as much dust in the air as it has oxygen.
