I rolled my fenders today. My repaired fender was cutting into my sidewall every time I hit a bump. They missed an edge when they reformed them and I alleviated that today. Rolled the rears and trimmed the bumper bolts as well. Can't wait to have the exterior in perfect condition. Just waiting on both bumpers to be repainted and mounted properly. The driver rear bumper bracket is broken. The accident I was in snapped the rear fender liner bracket...But it's not critical damage, just annoying.

Installed the new AVIN AVANT 2 in the ZHP. Bought it as a birthday present for the wife. She hated the OEM Nav system.

So far, I really like the AVANT 2. Only issue so far is the glare on the screen from the back window. It shows up a lot more than the OEM unit did.

I'm an aspiring driver for an E30 Chump Car team, but for now I'm the token crew leader/mechanic/fuel guy. Had a race in St Louis over the weekend and we ended up having some major rocker arm issues. 3 separate pit stops included replacing a rocker arm. By the 3rd one we had the time down to 40 minutes. This is with no cool down of the engine. Yea it's stock suspension. I think. Somehow my dad's ZSP is lower than my car by a good half inch.

When you put the two wheels side by side, arc 8 and 135, the 135 is actually a tiny bit shorter. 235/40-18 on the 135 and 245/45-17 on the arc 8.

Wheels look good... Just a hint though. If you only have 2, put them on the same side. At least then your car will LOOK like it has all 4 wheels. Can't see both sides of the same car at the same time, so nobody will ever know... Unless you park near a lot of mirrors, or do frequent u-turns.. But you get the idea...

Of course, that only works if you have a square setup...

Small? Besides ZHP, all non-m e46s came with 17" or smaller wheels. I'm doing it for many reasons:
1.) Cost. The wheels are a bit cheaper
2.) Cost again. Tires are about $30-50 cheaper for the exact same tire from a 17" over an 18". With autocross and track days, I've been going through a set of tires in 12-18 months.
3.) Weight. 17" wheel is lighter than an 18".

He was commenting on Jon's comment to put both wheels on the same side instead of same axle. If you run two different size tires, or even if you have a flat or seriously low tire pressure, it will kill a differential.

I just think Jon recommending wheel placement is funny...

Looks nice Stephen, but 245/45/17? Thats hella sidewall, I run 225/45/17 on my auto-x wheels and thats OEM size. I think you needed 40 sidewall, but I guess 45 works

Got a new starter, some vacuum hoses, intake manifold gaskets, disa, oem strut bar, Z4m fcabs, and some other stuff to install on my car. Its been sitting for over a month, I should probably fix it/get it fixed.

The diff is capable of doing different speeds for "short" periods of times in turns, etc. Not long term. Too long and it puts a weird strain on driveshaft and will potentially take out the gear being used most. If hwy, fifth or sixth.

Example - if you get a flat - it is recommended to place the spare on the non drive axle.

I get a kick when I see (mostly front dr cars since they are predominate these days) with a spare on front and the car is very clearly lower on that side and you can see the spare isn't same height as regular wheels.

Yeah, I had read through the threads and saw that from several folks, for this go around I got the pair on amazon using cash back points for $27 so it wasn't too bad. We'll see how they do and re-evaluate down the road.

To add some more info to this…:

My APEX Arc-7 17x8.5" with a 245/45-17 tire… KIND OF fit. It dropped in just fine, but I could NOT for the life of me get it out without breaking two small plastic tabs on part of trunk liner. Oh well. Not worried. Oh, and it pushed the floor board up by about 3/4 of an inch. Acceptable to me to have a full 8.5" "spare."

The OEM Style 135 front wheel with a 235/40-18 tire fit JUST barely and didn't have any issues.

correction. the ZSP 330 got 18" style 71s. and just because they came with them stock, doesn't mean it's still not too small for the fenders.

but yeah, i was just saying that because of the big sidewall profile, it makes the wheels look even more tiny than usual. sort of like stock 16s with the normal profile tires on them.

I managed to source a 3.38 diff locally for $100. I wasn't sure that was quite enough gearing for me though, and through talking to Devlin, I started looking some more. He mentioned really wanting a 3.38 because he still does a fair bit of highway driving. I was thinking of a 3.46, even though I don't want to be bothered with flange swaps...

As luck would have it, I found a 3.46 for $100 right near where Devlin lived. He picked that up for me yesterday, and as soon as I can get the heck out of this hospital, I'm going to go pick up the 3.38 for him, also for $100

Finally had time to install my slightly used Bilstein Sports and H&R Sports (29484) on the wife's ZHP. Took me and my 13 yr old about 5 hours. Fought with the rears for a good 3 hours of that. Rear shocks were completely dead (100k miles) and the fronts seem to be "ok". Lowered the front almost 3/4" and the rears maybe 1/8" so far. Hoping they settle a little more. She didn't want to lower it too much, but I wasn't going to replace just the shocks so we compromised on the springs.

Also, replaced my (323ci) VCG since I'm still smelling oil burn at idle after traveling. We'll see, but I think the next step is rear main seal, which I already have. Trying to see if I can find a cheap M52TUB28 since this car seems to be becoming the HPDE car. Before anyone says why? As said above, I've got the 13 year old and he wants the car when he turns 16.

Picked up my car from Toronto and drove it home today. I had left it there all week to have the automatic transmission fluid & filter , the rear diff oil , and the fuel filter changed.

The transmission seems to shift faster now with less hesitation. Shifts seem a little firmer.

My fuel economy seems to have improved materially, by about 0.4-0.5L/100kms.

Got stuck in Toronto traffic, took me almost 3 hours to cross the city. Now I remember why I dislike Toronto. ;)

The part that rubs is the front section of the rear fender. On the driver's side I remember I had to tuck more metal in at about 10 o' clock. My rubber disappeared after that. The rear bumper clip bolt wasn't the culprit when I was trying to diagnose. Watch out for the sealing of the inside fender. Make sure it's sealed really good because water will get in there and will rust as my 330 did. No matter what the pressure from the roller causes micro fractures in the paint especially at the edge that you may not see. I did all the right things when I rolled my fender with a heat gun except seal it.

Hmm, I'll have to look again at that. The rms guy was convinced it was rear section. Doesn't the rear tow make the rear section more likely?

That's what I thought....I know when ever i dropped my rear to the ground quickly to see the suspension move I thought the tires compressed and then moved to the rear upon absorbing shock. But there was one time i really rubbed and I checked it right after to see rubber shavings in the front of the roll where I didn't do it as aggressively as at the back.

Took the Mini Cooper to my Indy for a PPI (post-purchase inspection). He said the car is in good shape. Only the CA bushings should be replaced soon (car has 138,000 miles). Oh, and he recommended the Inspection II and fuel filter since I don't have any service records.

On the track, rubber comes flying at you all the time from peoples' tires. Once I even got hit in the face by one, despite having a helmet on and being inside the car...
These rubber pieces make rubber marks on the car which have to be clayed out as they don't just wipe off.

Ripped apart my car. Intake manifold is off, changing starter, CCV and all hoses, new vacuum lines, ICV clean, throttle body clean, new gaskets, z4m Fcabs, new tie rod assemblies.

Car has been parked for two months and has cob webs on it, time to get it running!

I don't. I've changed oil twice with bmw oil. Had the car for less than 6,000 miles.

Id love to, but I just bought a new DISA too.. And my car is cable driven no drive by wire like the 330. It can be done, but I think i need a tune as well. Gets pretty expensive to do the whole 9 yards.

Finished claying/polishing/sealing all of the doors, rear quarters, rear bumper, and boot lid. My goodness that was a ton of work...

The car is so slippery right now you could probably lean up against the car and slip and fall. :biggrin

not today, but yesterday i got bored and started trying to install the bmw diagnostic stuff on my windows 8.1 pro laptop. so far, inpa/ncs works. just not DIS/SSS cause the VMware keeps crashing once the image loads. but I coded the triple blink on my car only to test if ncs really works, which it does. i don't really use it though so whatever.

Just got done with a night drive up to Placerville, over to Pilot Hill and then home. Went with a buddy who was borrowing a tesla roadster. That car has gobs of torque and is fun to drive for about 10 min. It is not luxurious or comfortable and not DD material. No power steering was also kinda lame, but it was cool playing with an electric car for a bit.

Removed my old spoiler that Nacho c/f wrapped but it's fading. I'll probably list it for sale, OEM coupe spoiler. You'd need to strip it. Replaced it with an eBay one, which didn't look like I thought it would when it arrived but I like it. Also removed the 'zhp' badge. Re-installed my subwoofer, replaced my broken splitter.

Over the weekend, X5 LED fogs were swapped over to my stock housings. Special thanks to Stuart - your knowledge and skills were invaluable to getting this done! Now if I could only get used to using power tools. lol

Honestly, I didn't notice a huge difference like everyone seems to have noticed. I replaced mine with a gutted out unit from BavAuto (if I remember correctly) and honestly wondered why I spent the money. :dunno

I have finally decided to eliminate future regulator problems (knock on wood) is to just don't use the windows. Leave them closed and run the interior on full Auto and setting the temp on 72 deg. I know I am late to realize this. Hard headed (stubborn....like what my S.O. says) and very old school.

Just wondering if constantly running on Auto would drain power and use more petro. Which is another old school theory.

Anything over 50mph is more of a detriment running with the windows down and the A/C off IIRC. Mythbusters proved it...

^ yes it would use more power and use more gas. but if you're cruising like at 80. the A/C is more efficient, so it's barely noticeable for gas. but the loss in power is still there

Well, technically I'm a day late as I did this yesterday, but I was too whooped last night to get online... So, yesterday brought a few local buddies together for a little hangout at my house, centered around a diff swap in my car.

Swapped to the 3.46 that I picked up locally for $100. :) Its been raining cats and dogs ever since, but man, the car feels SO lively now, I'm really happy with it. Of course, I was responsible and replaced all the diff seals as well when we swapped the flanges, and I put in fresh Redline 75W90 as well, even though the "old redline" was only about 4K miles old... :facepalm

Pics? Sorry no pics taken.. Imagine white ZHP in the garage, Imola ZHP sedan, silver ZHP sedan, and E90 M3 sedan all in the driveway... Oh and a Jeep... :biggrin

The A/C system in these cars is supposed to have a variable compressor, which is to say, it's not just "on" or "off", but can be a selective drain on the system according to how badly it's needed. Despite this I still see a pretty noticeable difference: I ran this way all summer and show a pretty solid fuel log trend that I lose between 2-4mpg compared to driving with the A/C off.

i wonder if the window regulators thing is mainly a sedan problem. cause i use the windows all the time on my coupes and it's fine. on my sedan, i used it rarely (didn't like that the wind would hit the pillar and hit my ear) and it failed like twice lol

More prevalent on sedans, more expensive on coupes because you need a jig to align the frameless glass

It definitely livens up the car. The biggest thing I noticed was that the car doesn't seem to run out of power in the upper RPMs... It just feels so much stronger up top. Granted, its all an illusion as the speedo doesn't go up any faster, but it definitely feels like it has a lot more punch. The wide open throttle grin is a little bigger now, that's for sure. :biggrin

I did the zip tie mod on the one regulator I replaced. It might not be necessary, but I'm a big fan of using the windows, so if it helps extend the life, I'm all for it. Good luck, not a hard job at all. :thumbsup

This is probably my plan for the summer. Let's see how much more petro it uses. And turn off the Auto on winter.
