Well if all goes to plan my car should have it's manual and tranny fluids flushed by the local Indy on Saturday. The local club (Dane I won't mention the name :) ) is having a cars and coffee event at his shop so we are going to do the service for all to see. Should be interesting. I will snap some pictures.

Passed California smog and renewed registration. Reg good for 1 year, smog good for 2 years.

All sniffer numbers well below max limits but at 15mph the HC, CO and NO readings were all above average (for passing vehicles--I assume all passing vehicles, not just M54 engines). At 25mph, they were all at or below average. For example...

Hydrocarbons: At 15mph, measured 11, average is 4 (max 52). At 25mph, measured 5, average 4 (max 36)
Carbon monoxide: At 15 mph, measured 0.13, average 0.01 (max 0.49). At 25mph, measured 0.02, average is 0.01 (max 0.47)
Nitrous Oxide: at 15 mph, measured 69, average 47 (max 425). At 25mph, measured 10, average 26 (max 712)

Could it be BMW or Jim Comforti (Shark Injector) tuned it that way to run a little richer at low speeds and closer to stoichiometric at higher speeds? Looks like 15/25 mph test runs were done in different gears, since 15mph was at 1565 RPM and 25mph was at 1772 RPM.

Phew, I didn't intend to do what I did tonight, but after my sister came by (I'm at work) with her rearview mirror hanging by the wires (damn mount failed, pulled a chunk of glass with it) on her recently new (to her) e93, I was kinda "in the mood." Sucks, still not quite sure about that one. Glass is now pretty thin where the chunk is missing, was tempted just to glue it back in. She paid for a AAA extended warranty (unbeknownst to me, I probably wouldn't have advised it) and thinks they might cover it. We'll see.

Ok, so on to the ZHP! I've had this odd idling noise for over a year now and I always was pretty sure it was/is the hydraulic tensioner idler/pulley. So I tore the car down enough to verify this, yes it is the only thing that is noise when turned. I replaced the other pulley's at 100k, I didn't replace this one because I was under the impression that the idler/pulley was one piece with the actual tensioner. This, however is not the case and now I'm wishing I had done this a year ago, or back at 100k.

So here is quick question that hopefully won't get lost in the April Fools day blinker fluid conversation. At 124k, would it be smart to go ahead and replace the actual hydraulic tensioner too? It would be an extra $81, which I realize isn't much considering the car is paid for, but is it necessary? Belt is nice and tight!

Thanks!

Blue car was at higher RPM's, but that might be because of the diff ratio:

I had replaced my complete unit at 109,125. The belt was also tight but upon removal, the tensioner was not as strong as a new unit. IMO I would get it and know that you wont have to think about it for the next 100k.

I have a question about tensioners. I know that people sometimes convert the alternator tensioner from mechanical to hydralic, but does/can the A/C tension be converted to hydralic as well?

Thank you for your response. After watching a video on youtube where a guy changed from mechanical to hydraulic, I better understand the assembly and will be ordering a new hydraulic component as well. It kind of makes sense since I'll have it all apart and be in there, it won't take an extra 5 minutes to install.

I have this same thing going on, for nearly a year now. I try to keep the car out of the rain at all costs, luckily I have a garage at the 3 most visited places I go (home, work, school). When I had my windshield replaced at the dealer I talked to the tech that was going to do the work and asked him about it. He said most likely it was the glue around the vapor barrier (he didn't call it that, but I can't think of what its called) that has failed. I guess its common on e46's, if they worked in there, they should have used new glue when they put it back together.

Let us know what all they do, my car doesn't smell inside like a wet dog or anything so hopefully I caught it early enough not to need to replace the carpeting and sound deadening underneath. I really need to get this done, but at the same time its an excuse to keep the CRV out of the garage and the ZHP in, haha.

Good luck!

Picture doesn't show the angle in the driveway.... I did a quick adjustment down the street at a local school. There they looked a little high, but it may be because not used to how bright and wide the pattern is.

When I upgraded my lenses to ZKW's I found (via google) a decent procedure for proper height alignment. I parked the car 20 level foot from a white garage door and then measured up the wall to a certain height. It worked pretty well and I haven't been getting flashed, but I don't really drive the car much either (5,000 miles in 2013). Might search and check it out if you think you need to. Cutoff looks great! The ZKW lenses are one of my favorite mods too.

----

Ordered some parts the other day, new hydraulic tensioner and idler, 68mm "new style" BMW center caps for my VMR wheels (been meaning to do this for 2.5 years) and a cover for the emergency (manual) roof opener for my sisters e93. Over $200, but the car is paid for, so I can't really complain. I almost sprung for new headlight covers, but I had having credit card debt, so those will have to wait.

Actually....this was done yesterday. I let a good friend of mine drive my ZHP on the highway so that he could compare it to his Competition Package ///M (that's right Justin... more forward slashes typed from my Macintosh laptop computer just for you!). He agreed that the ZHP was the "perfect" daily driver, especially how I have it currently set up :) It was nice to see how my car performed from a passenger's point of view, something I don't do too often...

@ Daniel...parts are looking sweet! :thumbsup

That's cool dawg.

Post in whatever colored text and however many forward slashes you like. It's just super difficult to read because every other line in your posts is my ///M this and my ///M that. I want to keep updated with your cars, but golly does it get ever annoying. "My ///M" just reads as, "I'm a possessive person and I want you to know I have an M3 every other time I post."

Yesterday was go to a friends house and work on cars day. My list as follows for my car:

1. Replace Intake boots and DISA, clean MAF/ICV/TB, break my back: Well that lower intake boot really sucks. Hanz from the BMW factory really had the last laugh on us with those lower hose clamps. With the screw mounted on the bottom of the boot and pointing at the back of the car, it really was not easy getting them loose with the the hoses right next to it. I believe we ended up sticking an entire arm down there with a tiny screw driver and getting it that way. Why he didn't orient them pointing up like I did on the install really beats me. I left the intake on, but I did take out the cabin filter and the plastic wall next to the brake booster for more access. Not a big deal to take them out.

Anyway, my lower boot was torn in a few places on the ICV elbow so its good I changed it. The DISA valve was still functional but the arm had some play in it. Not sure what I will do with it now as I installed a new one. Sprayed down the MAF and let it dry. TB and ICV we left on the car so now I have a TB gasket to keep for some other time. I sprayed the ICV down pretty well with TB cleaner and a bunch of gunk came out. The TB looked surprisingly clean *shrug.* The car ran so smooth after this job I had to keep looking at the RPMs to make sure the car was still running at stop lights. There is a definite improvement in drivability too. Glad I tacked this.

Unforunately the little electronic mosquito noise that I hear when the throttle is depressed from 5-10% is still there. Based on other threads I have read, I thought it was caused by the intake boots leaking but I don't know what it could be now. Maybe I have a leak somewhere else?

2. Check and replace headlight bowls: I bought restored bowls form a member here, only to remove the headlights from my car and find the headlights were still in very good condition, with only slight burning. I think I want to wait until they get worse before I swap them out. I will keep the extras until then.

3. Try to find the leak that left my passenger side footwell soaked: This one stumped us. We pulled off the door panel and took a garden hose to the door and water flowed into it and out the bottom. There was no leaking of the water barrier that I could see. Very disappointing. Not sure what else it could be. I couldn't replicate the scenario exactly, as my street is 30 degrees and I was parked with the passenger side uphill during the storms. Maybe the angle had something to do with it. Maybe the water is coming in somewhere else. I don't know. The back seat floor was dry.

An E46 M3 (heavily modded) owner was there helping out and he asked to drive my car. Since he helped me find a DISA bolt I dropped and kept complementing my car all day I said ok. He was very impressed with how smooth our motors are, and said my car drives extremely well. He changed out his steering rack to the one we have and he wanted to compare. He rev matches in my own car better than I do, which made me a little jealous. I could do it perfectly with my old Z but I am still trying to get it just right in the ZHP

Today I have some interior pieces I want to replace so I better get up and get moving!

Engine is built outside of the car...so for the intake boot to be installed the easiest I guess they do it that way. Yeah it's a pain, but it can be done easier if you use a ratchet and remove the DME heat shield.

I was just looking up ways to check for that....compressed air maybe?

Someone also said something got disconnected up there in their case. Involves taking off the a-pillar and the visor and pulling the headliner down. ugh.

Got it. Thanks.

I did some interior work today. Put in a new cup holder and center console trim. Also, a Nappa leather (M3) armrest top. I couldn't install my first aid box because I don't have the right extension. My tool collection continues to grow....

Also, did the Alcantara steering wheel cleaning DIY. I think just wiping it down with the wet rag helped the most. It was white and ended with a bunch of dark marks on it. I am not sure how much the magic eraser helped.

So now I have an extra center console and cup holders. Not sure anyone would want these used pieces. They have a few scratches on them (which is why I replaced them)

Noticed what sounded like a vacuum leak under the hood and pin pointed it to the disa valve. That and the car was having stuttering acceleration lately around 2.5k. Turns out I didn't tighten it up enough last time I replaced a crack lower intake hose. Tightened it up and all is well.

AC evac/recharge/leak test. No leaks found. OTD $226. My indy shop said to bring it back on a hotter day (it's in the 40s here again :-/) or if I notice it not cooling well and he won't charge for evac/recharge, just additional freon and repairs as needed. PO gave me receipts where he had it charged in Oct. so I'm not sure what's going on.

Today I did a first... First detail on the 328d.

The car has been staying fairly clean, but I've been lazy lately and have been doing nothing more than the local car wash since we bought it. The car really needed a clay and a good coat of wax, along with a few other details. So, today was the day... I clayed and waxed the paint, cleaned the wheels, wiped down under the hood (first time I've opened the hood since we bought it!....:shifty ) and gave the interior a good wipe down...

I must say, the Mineral White Metallic is a pretty color when freshly detailed... I'd take it over Alpine White for sure... :eeps

Thanks Gaary, Dario, Fred, Dane, BP, Jonathon, Joop! BTW, I like your thinking Joop, more mods! Although there's not much left as far as mods. Really just the BBK (already purchased), LED lighting (bought and going on today), BSW subwoofer, and maybe DAS (if they happen to come around cheap). Gotta replace a smashed splitter, but that's modding a mod. :) Can't think of any others.

Gave my car and the ZHP coupe a bath yesterday. Packed them with chairs, GoPro's, tools and a quart if oil for our trip down to AMS for our first autocross. Greatly looking forward to it. Running B class in mine. Wife didn't want to have to shift, so she's driving in C class. There to enjoy the first one and learn. That competitiveness will soon follow.

Did you buy one of the new Sirius modules that come with a year's subscription free? Where did you mount the antenna? You'll have to post a review. I get mixed reviews on everything from sound quality to value to programming quality (lots of commercials, not cheap, same songs), etc. it's made me think twice about getting one.

I have a lifetime subscription on my SIRIUS account so all I have to do is transfer my account onto the module. Only issue I now have is that programming quality can improve....

Spent some time yesterday getting the car out of winter storage, installing my new (to me) 17" Style 68 wheels, my new Bimmian stubby antenna, Bimmian cell mount, and BSW rear midbass speakers (they were backordered last fall and came in only after the car was stored). Went for a nice top down drive and blew the cobwebs off the car. I had forgotten how nice it drove and sounded!!!

I also went and took the 911 out of storage and drove it home. The 44 year-old car started up pretty easily (albeit with a huge cloud of smoke, typical for flat sixes after storage) and drove great too.

No limiters needed with these...

Looks like I have to have a front wheel bearing replaced on the sedan. Wife complained of a vibration twice in the past few weeks after the car had sat for a few days (not tires). Our local place we take the cars to for tires, alignments put it on the high speed balance machine finally isolated it.

I'll let them do this one, but I'm ordering the other front to DIY. Seems simple enough, but I just don't have the time right now to do this one.

Took the dog to the vet this morning for an allergy issue, on the way there he decided to throw up, luckily on me and not in/on the ZHP.

On the way back a semi threw up a rock and chipped my ~6 month old OEM windshield. Awesome.

Gave it a bath, cleared out the clutter from within and tucked it in the garage, she had a rough morning. Waiting to hear from the insurance company about getting the chip filled, its already cracked a tiny bit. Possibly happened while washing, didn't notice it before, only after.

Makes sense.

Id either get Powerflex like or get regular bushes with limiters. Supposedly they lengthen the life of the rtab in addition to tightening up the rear. My local shop said it was must for the car, I took their word for it. HAHA. It was $40 so not too bad.

Thats what I said on my FB post about it! I didn't share here, however, that it was a feces snack he threw up. Vet suggested sprinkling cayenne pepper on his feces to hopefully get him to quit eating it. I pulled over and cleaned it off of me, but I preferred it to be on me than in the car.

Yes, poop barf, it was indeed gross. If I had discussed such an even prior to it happening I would have probably said I wouldn't have been able to handle it, but I continue to surprise myself when things like this happen. - Fixed oil leak on e46, used an Indy during winter for an oil change because it was too cold, it appears he reused the copper oil bolt washer, it stretched and created a leak.
- Installed studs & lug nuts on Brett's e46, looks nice, he'll post pics later.
- Couldn't get the mower started, bought & changed battery in the JD mower, then mowed the lawn.
- Put e90 on jack stands tonight & removed wheels in prep for tomorrow's brake job, will be painting calipers on this job.

I took my ZHP to Lime Rock today... my car is surrounded by track rats comprised of Porsche, Lotus, Corvette, Cooper Mini, and of course many different series of BMW :)

Several ZHPs made a showing so I'll focus primarily on them while taking pics :thumbsup

2 oil changes (M1-0W40) and Toyo Proxes 4 plus X 4 for Justinwilson77's zhp. Choices available on short notice were Potenza's or Proxes. I decided we'd try these.

Oil change on mine, and then my son's (jw77) zhp. Cost was $42.50 each. Not bad imho.

So spent the day doing another brake job. Parts all from Ray (Smilez), paint by me. Thanks Ray, your product is top notch, the previous posts show Brett's car with nearly 15K miles and not much wear on the pads & rotors.

Is 0-40 still $25ish for a 5qt jug at wally world ? Need to do it myself.

As a side note, today I installed new console, adjusted parking brake, installed summer wheels, and flushed diff/tranny fluids. Some good old boring maintenance.
