The newest A/S is the A/S-3. It's a great tire.

Yup, that's what I just put on my car. I'll see how it handles autocross, but it just rocked a damp Highway 1 for me. Big thumbs up.

Got my DISA valve replaced. You can see the difference in the seals.

The valve itself had a small amount of play but seemed to be just fine, otherwise.

Some car have an upgraded, sturdier design. The orange gaskets represent an updated part number IIRC. Did yours have anything of the sort?

Mine did have an orange gasket, which was completely flattened. The flap mechanism was also completely destroyed.

I just went through this with my local mechanic. Only worse, my wheel locks were just as tight and needed to be drilled out. Even worse still, this was on my almost new VMR VB3's. I'd bring it back to the shop that last put your wheels on and have them buzz them off. 67 ft/lbs is all these need.

This is what my wheel lock looked like after they ruined my only key...

That chunk of paint missing was from when one of their mechanics tried to hammer a socket over them, and missed a swing with the hammer. I think I scared him a little when I screamed at him for that. After having watched him do it he has the balls to say "that was always there" /rant nono

I had a similar issue occur to my ///M recently when the mechanics used air tools to torque my aluminum open ended lug nuts. The shop ruined my lug nuts so I ended up having to get Kics R40's. Next time I will be watching them closely..... sorry to see you having to go through this....

The annoying part is that I actually told them before I left them the car, be sure to only torque the lugs to 67 ft/lbs. I always remind them because I was worried they would do this. You can see how well that plan worked.

Like I can use these when I take my ///M to car shows :facepalm These pictured were in the best of shape. I have others that were gouged deeper....

This is after I stressed to my service advisor to have my lug nuts loosened, tightened, and torqued by hand....do you think these mechanics actually listen to their customer???

Those look nasty. Theres no way they installed them by hand like you instructed. I'm seriously considering buy a set of harbor freight's coated impact sockets and giving it to my mechanic with the car. I'll in-grave 67 ft/lbs in it or something. Although it's a little late, the lug holes on my CSL's are all pretty trashed.

I reaaallly need to do this, I have an appointment Friday to have an inspection done and I don't need anything else damaged. I can't afford to keep paying for their screw ups. Maybe I'll leave a sticky note on the instrument cluster. lol

Edit: these sockets... http://www.harborfreight.com/7-piece-sae-metric-12-lug-nut-impact-sockets-69781.html

Although they don't actually protect the surface of the bolt, it should protect the wheel from damage.

You reuse the plastic tabs/screws on the insulation. Be careful not to strip them! the Plastic is really soft. I rounded out one and had to use pliers to unscrew it.

I haven't looked at the screw thread but I mounted my pewter Georgia Tech Alumni surround using Allen-head screws. Since the lower screw holes are covered by the plate surround, I screw those in first then the plate surround. It has a clean and yet 'engineered' look with the Allen-heads! I had a new one already because everyone said it would break, so I put the new one on... Along with new upper and lower intake boots. They were actually still really soft and in good shape too though. My stuff had all been done before... :biggrin

Anyway, after a run to the parts store (didn't have any carb cleaner!) and a 2 hour break to help my wife get the girls through lunch, I'm DONE...

Only took about 2 hours of actual work, and that included removal/installation of the strut bar, the cabin air filter assembly, and about a million texts to/from Devlin in the process... Test drive to come later tonight maybe.

Either way, she got washed today too, so she at least looks good in the garage. :biggrin

Still not a fan, BUT, it matches the rest of the car very well.

Nope. Not a fan.

Well damn. I kind of like them (wish they weren't matte), but I feel like my opinion might be based too much on the fact that blue, black, and dark grey are my favorite colors... :scratchinghead

I guess I'll see how anthracite or dark grey looks.

Hey, in the end its your car. They do make a gloss finish: https://www.dipyourcar.com/Kit-Wheels-Gloss-Finish.html

Yeah, I just want to stay away from the ricey look, and my bias eyes can't see past the black and blue. :rofl
I was eyeing the gloss, but I watched a video on YT and it didn't do much.
Hmm, I think I might try what Damon did to his wheels.

I agree 100%. I have already done a few mods that I've NEVER seen before anywhere, and I'm happy with them, regardless of what others think.

That being said, I don't really like black wheels, but your car looks great in those pics. Good luck with whatever you choose!

Drove it to work this morning. I noticed a difference right away. It's the same as when I installed my Sprint Booster, car feels peepier. As far as the sounds, I can kinda tell a difference cruising around. When you get on it it's noticeable especially at 3500 plus rpms.

Been offline last couple of days, too depressed to write. Long story short, went on a business trip on my wife´s car (dont like to take Heinz on long trips, specially on a business trips) my wife was driving it and an old van cut her off and it had a bent rear metallic bumper which sliced open the left fender and ripped off my entire front bumper, Im insured but the problem now is the parts, I asked for all new parts considering all the supports and clamps were ripped apart and now I have to wait for the shop to bring my parts... on the bright side now, that the car is in the shop I can get some other things done... I had recently installed the splitters and fog duct covers and done the front plate delete (gonna paint the strips now)

What did I do for my ZHP today? I drove it! I knew it was special when I test drove it, but until you actually spend time in the seat, you really don't start to appreciate all of it's virtues. The biggest thing I noticed was the torque. I've never had a car that could pull from such low RPMs. A German friend of mine that has owned several BMWs clued me in on that. He said I wind out the gears too far (and waste gas). I've driven so many small bore cars that didn't deliver much in the way of torque and now this thing offers it willingly. Yep, I'm happy with this purchase!

Car: great!
Me: ok
Tires: terrible :(

I road in a wrx on some 140 tread street tires. Wow.

I thin the all season tires on my 325 were better than what I put on my 330. It felt like I was on butter out there. Then again, my 325 didn't have 235hp with a 3.64 diff.

^It's a slippery slope with AutoX. I was in the same situation last year, I was disappointed in my A/S's (which I expected) and finally ponied up for good summer rubber, and now I'm on the hunt for coils and sways this summer. Hopefully after those modifications I can stop and just enjoy the car for a while.

Also a WRX with good tires and a good driver is hard to beat, especially if it's a relatively small course.

stephenkirsh
02-24-2014, 01:47 PM
I already have suspension upgrades planned. I can deal with the tires being bad. If we weren't in a drought, I'd be in an area that rains a lot (for California). About 30" a year.

Just finished doing some coding... I did both the speedo error correction and recalibration of the temp gauge for better operation. Will test drive tomorrow morning and see how the temp gauge reacts.

I did notice one thing, the car still had some heat in it from when I came home earlier tonight... When I started, the temp gauge was reading right at the top end of the blue section. As soon as I recoded, it was reading almost in the middle of the blue... So, it definitely changed and read colder than before. That is a good sign I suppose.

Aside from that, loaded her up with some fresh 93 octane... I went out of my way to a station that advertised ethanol free gas... When I pulled in, I found that the only ethanol free fuel was 90 octane, and it was waaaaay more expensive than the 93 octane. Dammit...

Someone on Bimmerfest wants to buy the headers I've got. Just got quotes for shipping from UPS and FedEx......man.
I knew international shipping would be expensive, but from the looks of it, the cost of shipping is around 90% of the cost of the item itself.

Looks like it'll be on CL & the forums unless the guy is willing to pay almost 2x as much for them.

I compared my speedo to this speedo app on my phone and up to 40mph it matched. I need to try it when I have a passenger in the car to help. When you finished the temp gauge mod, did you have to reset your time and date in the nav computer?

Hey, are you going to be in SF at some point?

I will try to compare but I don't have any speedo app on my phone. I'll have to find something and download it... Yes, I did have to reset my date and time.

As for SF, not likely... I will be in SoCal though, next time I get on the ship, maybe mid April-ish....?

It's been a long, rough week of school, so I wanted to release some stress. It's been raining, so I found an empty warehouse lot and got my car sideways a bit.

The rear was harder to kick out than I thought it would be. I'm pleased with that.

Haha, maybe. I have a 3.38 in my garage I could swap in, but that would only help in the dry. It would make it worse in the wet, where I already have one-wheel-peel syndrome to the max. That's what made getting my car sideways a little difficult. I had to slide it because I couldn't get the car to turn around with power because I couldn't get traction.

I'd rather go with an M3 rear end, though. I have one eye open. :)

I know I'm going agains't the family by asking this, but is there a thread for FS discussion? My ZHP turns 11 on Monday (03/03/03 build date) I've enjoyed the past nearly 8 years with her, but I'm about to be jobless for about two years while in a professional school. I'm considering prepping the car for sale (removing some mods, putting OEM wheels back on, etc, etc, etc), selling her and looking for either a newer, lower mileage ZHP or perhaps something else with roundel (CPO x5, x3, x1, 135i, etc). The only thing is, Edmunds says my car is only worth about $5700. This seems crazy LOW to me. 2003 123K 2 owner car, loaded (HK, Nav, Leather, Xenon's, sunroof, etc), complete maintenance done at 100k, fresh suspension all around. If its only worth $5700 then I'm just going to keep it. Am I missing something here?

KBB said $8k, but then NADA said $6k.

I guess I'm going to have it forever, I don't think I could part ways with her for less than $10k. I guess I'll have to wait until after professional school to get my second BMW. Until then I'm going to try to soften the suspension back up, 19's ride too rough, Memphis roads are crap.

I do this every few years, have ever since I bought her. I'll snap out of it in a few days.

We don't allow "feelers", but you're asking a different question, and it's a legitimate one. I agree with Charlie, what's the point in selling it if the price is THAT low? Seems too low but as euro cars get older, maint. issues, etc come into play so I think the value drops even more. Maybe then they get to the point where the become "classic"-ish and begin to rise back up in price after all the junkers are gone. I think there are probably too many poor examples available polluting the pool for pristine ones.

stephenkirsh
03-01-2014, 07:37 PM
Wait, so because you'll be jobless soon, you want to sell your zhp for a lower mileage one? I don't follow. I feel like that'll be a negative cash flow situation.

If you DO want to sell, for reference, my zhp with 115k was $11,000 in October 2013. It needed $3500 in work, so you should be able to get at least $11k for yours if you set it back to OEM, I think.

Yes, negative cash flow, making a big purchase before becoming jobless for two years, I know that sounds crazy. I have to get my house re-financed this year too (from 3 years into a 30 year into a 15 year, better interest rate, no PMI). It sounds backwards, but the payment would only go up $100/month, will save over $78,000 in interest over the life of the loan. I could pull cash from elsewhere to pay the difference in price between vehicles, but with interest rates as low as they are (1.79-1.99), might as well use someone else's money. It would be easier to buy now then next year or the year after when I have no job. I don't know how banks are about loaning money out to people with no income.

Washed the sedan Friday afternoon and then the other 2 yesterday. Put the sedan on jackstands, fitted a 10mm spacer on the front to show the wife what it will look like with 10/12 combo. I then took all the wheels off and had the tires removed and sent the wheels to get refinished. Quoted $120 each and then they added a 5% discount on top of that (military). Will end up putting Toyo's back on after having Conti DWS before (what it had when we bought it).

Ordered a new washer pump for the coupe, and a new roundel for the sedan today and some other tid-bits. Dreading replacing the idler pulley on the coupe. Easy to do, but I don't feel like doing anything today.

I didn't take any pics since it was just long enough to show my wife and then off the wheels came. It will be a marked improvement over the stock gap, but not enough that it causes any issues. I think the 12/15 combo is a pretty good fit for our cars, but I didn't want to go too extreme since this is the wife's car.
