View Full Version : What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2

Today I prevented the dealer from replacing a good radiator in my ZHP so that I can do this later thru DIY in Spring....it's funny how the dealer will tell you that your radiator is leaking and then thru email they tell you a completely different story.... "there's no pinhole leak or pouring of coolant from your radiator"....in other words there's no leak....

pretty sure its a open diff.. Wasn't the LSD only for 750's?
I had a factory installed 3.15 LSD in my 735i

Congrats Sean!
Thanks guys! We can definitely have a meet in the future if enough people want to come to Sacramento lol. It isn't as huge as it looks - 1900 sqft and 2 car garage with a little extra workshop space off to the side in the garage. It is definitely better than our current town home. I'm glad to finally put down some roots for a little bit.
Congrats, Sean ! Beautiful place. Will u have neighbors to the left of your house ?
Only neighbors on the right. The left is a wildlife reserve/path to a pond/lake for walking/fishing etc. I like the house the most just for the lot itself.

I finally get to update in this thread. Today I started my ZHP for the first time and took her for a spin through the neighborhood... A little rough on idle for a few minutes, but it smoothed out within 2-3 minutes, and she seems happy as can be. Can't wait for some dry weather to get her out of the garage and stretch her legs! So good to be home...
I also opened all sorts of boxes to evaluate how many hours of mods I have ahead! :biggrin

Removed the Eagle Eyes tail lights and replaced them with the OE RCR that has been sitting in the shed for the last two years. Boxed up the EE to the original package. Will probably end up selling the EE set cheap to someone who might need them.
Now I need to start researching (again) and shopping for CREE light bulbs. Already have LED back up/reverse lights.

It was actually our good ol USPS, but the UPS and Fedex guy are guilty of it too.
Yes the engine filter is OEM NOW. The old one looked to be a Fram. The cabin air filter I decided to go with a Mahle, as they seem to have an excellent reputation in the BMW community. Its actually constructed completely different than our stock one. Instead of a plastic frame, it has a metal frame. And around that is foam. I guess to help it seal better than our stock ones.

560 mile drive in the coupe. Atlanta to Portmouth, VA. Just at 8 hrs with one fuel stop and one fast food meal stop. 405 miles on the tank with 70 mte. I know it's not super accurate but it said 28.0 mpg. Averaged 80.1 mph for 300 miles with one heated run. Got tired of a group doing the 70-80 pogo. I am thrilled with how it did. First lengthy drive in it of more than 60 miles.

Last Wednesday drained and filled manual transmission with Redline MTL. The new fluid is of course reddish. I'm pretty sure the last time I also put in Redline MTL but the fluid that came out after 20 months and 20,000 miles was honey colored or a light tan, still looked pretty clear, but it definitely wasn't red any longer. Maybe I left it in too long given the track days. Next change will probably be at 15,000 miles.
Thursday night changed the transmission mounts back to BimmerWorld solid rubber mounts with enforcer cups. Had previous run these for about 1 months and 1,000 miles then went back to "Brand X" poly mounts (without enforcer cups) because they had less NVH than the BimmerWorld mounts. But discovered the driver's side one was cracked pretty badly. (They lasted 2 years and 30,000 miles, including at least 16 track days and 10 AutoX days.) The BimmerWorld mounts with cups have noticeably more NV than Brand X without cups but I hope they are also more durable.
Today changed the diff fluid after 3 years and 42,000 miles. In retrospect, that was too long between diff fluid changes.

Did a little F30 M-sport retrofit action.
I should clarify. The F30 3 series, when optioned with the M-sport package, comes with a zhp knob and attached boot. I scooped one of these up on f30post for the cost of a standalone zhp knob. I prefer the leather boot as it doesn't collect dust like the alcantara one, however, not sure how it looks against the alcantara seats.....time will tell.

You are indeed lucky, State Farm wrote me a check for the higher of two aftermarket glass installers quotes and I paid the difference at the dealership (~$300, I have a $0 deductible). I hate insurance companies. I had a BMW windshield insured, why would I want anything but another BMW windshield installed? I don't want some crap form the cheapest place you can source it. I think I'll be getting a quote from Liberty Mutual (isn't that the company that does ONLY OEM replacement parts?) when my policy comes due next time. If they are less than $300 higher than State Farm, then I would have already been better off with them, plus, what happens when (heaven forbid) my car is in an accident? Are they going to want to put the cheapest parts they can find back on the car? Probably. As Sweet Brown from OKC would say "Ain't no body got time for that!" That was my first claim ever (10 year policy holder, 7.5 in this car) too.

Wow yeah that's weird. I had zero issue. I told them in my local office that I wanted OEM glass and they said yeah whatever you'd like. So I called the glass place and they said they'd have to jump through a few extra hoops to get it but they could do it so they're going to call me when it comes in.

Pretty rare to get OEM windows these days. Most shops install aftermarket windows since they're so much cheaper. I feel your pain, though. A week after I got my previous car ('06 Mercedes C230) I had a huge rock chip my hood, smash windshield, and still chip roof and hood on the way down.

from Liberty mutual website:
What kinds of parts will be used to repair my vehicle?
"Your estimate will be prepared using original manufacturer parts for all sheet metal body parts, such as fenders, doors, and hoods. The TLC facility or Liberty Mutual appraiser can answer any additional questions you may have about the specific parts that have been included on the appraisal."
Thats very interesting. You would think they would play that up in their advertising right? It only says metal body parts though. What about mechanical stuff (like radiators?) or plastic stuff (like headlights, trim pieces, etc.?).

I decided to grab one just after posting that post, its actually $200 less per year, but wouldn't let me add glass coverage for some reason. I added "new car replacement" to bump up the price (to the $200 less per year figure) hoping that would be about the same as glass coverage. Also, I was wrong, I'm not quite to my 10 year anniversary with State Farm yet (July). I might hold out and see if there is any benefit to what my agent keeps calling my "10 year no claims" discount, my windshield doesn't count against me, is. I would also need to see how much my other State Farm policies would go up because they are all bundled together (home, life, etc.).

Well after numerous attempts to set something up with a mobile wheel guy we couldn't make it work.
So in prepp for a show in Orlando next weekend I am giving the aluminum/OEM plastidip a try.
Interior looks good. Is that stuff off-the-shelf? Plans for the curb rash?

You can get black off the shelf at lowes. Other colors and clear coats have to be ordered.
Plan is to eventually have them refinished and the curb rash repaired.
But until then a few thick coats of this should cover it up nicely.

Removed exhaust, heatshield, and separated the driveshaft on the 7er. The center support bearing was DESTROYED. No wonder the driveshaft was so clunky...
Such a PITA to lay on the ground and work on the car.. Especially when the car has 24 year bolts that don't want to budge..

Replaced the ET cap and washer fluid pump on the MB coupe. Easy peasy, didn't take long enough to even justify a beer.
Then a fellow soccer dad just stopped by for a diagnosis on his dead headlight on his Saab, determined a bad bulb so sent him to the store to buy another H7. Have to remove the air box to get to the right headlight, this will take longer than 5 minutes and actually got some dirt on my hands, this should qualify for the drinking lamp to turn on.

sillieidiot finished up with the car - cleaning up the messy wiring, stowing the 4 ballasts underneath the headlights, re-aiming the retrofitted Morimoto Minis, etc.
One of the Orion V2s was still half-mooning but after swapping out the factory battery, it was fully functional again.
Apparently Duralast has discontinued the 49DL which was a under-$100 battery option for the E46. Instead, I paid twice as much ($200) for the new 94R Gold.
Will post pics of the newly-aimed Minis and cleaned up factory projectors with Osram CBIs later at night. :)

I replaced the driver side seat bottom in the E46 wagon. Really not that difficult once you figure out how the plastic trim clips work. Two 16mm bolts and two 16 mm nuts get the seat out of the car. Then you need a good torx set. I believe the torx sizes were T15 & T25.

Received my "stubby" antenna to replace the fishing pole. Also installed wheel locks. I bought this ZHP used a few weeks ago, and whoever was the last person that had the wheels off must have used an air gun to tighten the lug nuts. I could barely crack them loose with by 1/2" breaker bar!
Took each one off, added some anti-seize, and re-installed to 89 ft lbs...
The same shipping box also has my new valve cover gasket. need about 3 uninterrupted hours to tackle that one.

I would be willing to bet that one of the little pins on the side of the bulb broke, allowing the connector to start to fall off... Over time, it tried to fire, making good enough connection to eork, but clearly shorting through the bulb base as well. Eventually it came completely off and what you see is what's left. Replace the bulb, make sure it's seated well, and be done with it. I have a few spare OEM bulbs if you need one...

My e90 went to the mechanic on a flat bed. I didn't drive it for 2 weeks and then I noticed a big oily spot under her. I decided to play it safe and use my AAA membership for the tow truck. The mechanic said it's leaking transmission fluid big time.

Hope everything works out with the E90, they have been known to leak oil because of faulty oil drain pan gaskets.

Thank you, guys. The mechanic said the pan needs to be replaced. The quote is $900. It will be good to have fresh ATF again. I planned to do this at some point, anyways.

Went to a local auto glass shop and they verified my windshield had a stress crack. The shop called autoglassguru and the guru agreed to cover 100% of the replacement. Only issue was the shop forgot to order the replacement gasket so they are coming to my house on Fri a.m. This shop offers 100% replacement as long as I own the car. I'm pretty satisfied.

Get a second opinion with someone in the "know" if the pan requires replacement. Maybe it's just me....but I smell something that's not right. In the meantime, I will ask my son to maybe talk to the BMW techs. PM me your car's specs. Year, type, engine, etc.

I keep thinking about doing that; the E9x “335is” should be the same size as the E46 “330i”, so you should be able to just debadge and realign with an added “s”. If the two generations’ badges aren’t the same, you could still just get an E9x “330i” and a “335is” to piece together …

It helps keep weight over the rear wheels. Helps a little bit. Doesn't fix poor driving skill in the snow though haha. Just a slight advantage I guess. I haven't done it before and have always been fine without anything but apparently there is gonna be quite a bit of snow today/tonight.
Decided to get 100lbs of sand instead in case I get stuck.

So had an unfortunate incident just now. Stupid college girl in her civic came down the road towards me at 35mph or so. Roads are pretty bad right now with the snow, ice and slush that haven't been plowed. I'm cruising along at 10mph or so and she hits a slick spot and comes into my lane. I try to avoid her and punch the gas to rotate the car coutnerclockwise away from her. Luckily I miss her but then after holding the drift for a few seconds I slam my right rear tire into the curb that sticks out for the crosswalk. I limped it home but the back end is squirely and i have to turn the wheel to the left to get it to go straight. I'm thinking either I severely knocked the alignment out of whack or I just broke a toe rod. Will have to wait a couple days to get it up on a jack and see for sure.
Dammit!! Messed up my perfect wheels too with some curb rash.

Also having the radiator changed soon - set up an appointment to drop off the car tomorrow right after classes. So they will be able to work on it Friday morning without having to worry about hot parts.
Upper & lower radiator hoses, two thermostats, radiator, coolant expansion tank, cap, and maybe a few other things I missed.
Headers will not be on the list since I'd still rather smog first, then have them installed.
Also, wheels are now so dirty that they went from silver to powder-coated silver. (But in a nice, uniform way) :rofl

My son just text me that the E9x rear badges are bigger by 1 mm. E46 badges are 17mm & E9x are 18 mm. And the numeric and alphabets on the E9x are all connected. How hard to cutoff the alphabets 'is' and merge to the numericals '330' without destroying the plastics and show like factory is the question.

Unfortunately the parts guys were the one that 'measured' and for me, probably just eye-balled the size of the badges. So, you are right since I also think just about all of BMW badges are made the same sizes for the trunk lids. And they all have this special fonts that they use.

Ok, I just measured... The numbers on both my '330i' badge and the '328d' badge on our F30 are all exactly the same size... just a touch over 21mm. As we can see, the 's' on the pics I posted above is smaller, but all others are the same, so the 's' from one of the badges above would look just the same next to our 330i badge...

New M3 engine & transmission mounts, repainted M tech bumper and repaired a decade of damage from parking spots (prior owner(s)), "fixed" pesky problem with possessed/wandering side mirrors by taking driver's door apart and cleaning contacts, new AUC heater recirc sensor, mirror caps repainted. Wheels refinished. New fog lights (following a cracked lens). All done over the last week. I'm trying to make this into a "new" car with about a $100 monthly budget. My seatbelt/airbag light has been on FOREVER and I was putting off spending $130 on a new belt. I was getting this error "2 Ignition circuit ZK1 / Belt tensioner Driver" and this annoying light.
http://i59.tinypic.com/k3asyw.jpg
So I got to googling it and took the driver's seat out to get to what I thought the problem might be.
I narrowed it down to this connector on the belt buckle. I took that apart and cleaned it with deoxit (contact cleaner and dielectric - really good stuff).
