I'm very tempted JKO. How soon you get them?

Sent from my DROID4 using Tapatalk 2

The order is still processing as of now, but it says that it's in the final stages; 7-day shipping.

I'd recommend getting them not just for personal use but for the fact that they are in limited supply. I bookmarked their page for a long time now and I hear that they won't be making any more = prices may possibly inflate just like the BMW Performance strut bars. High turnover maybe...

I got the washer fluid pump replaced today by BMW of Lincoln. It was covered under warranty. I thought they drove my car because it had 20 more miles then what was on the invoice but since I used a different key and gave them the spare it all checked out.

To get rid of all side play, you'd need to replace everything that's not metal here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=EV53&mospid=47725&btnr=25_0413&hg=25&fg=05

I had serious shifter slop issues and #12 is what made the most difference.

Hornung418
01-18-2014, 02:23 PM
It's gone for a few weeks... But it will eventually return. As much as I hate to say it Rob Levinson is right about the build quality of the shifter. But a little slop is okay for now. Not too big of a deal.

I had to do a non voluntary differential swap after mine failed on the interstate (at only 140K! WTF, right?). Turns out that the diff is the same as any E-46 M/T diff, but a flange swap is mandatory to make it link up to the ZHP output axles. If you don't want to do a flange swap, you have to replace form the hub up. Steve Wheeler in Lake City FL did the work on that and he did a fantastic job.
Anyways, I just put my two cents in since I saw you were talking about your diff.
Today, I did a transmission fluid change to Redline D4 ATF on my 2003 ZHP 6 spd m/t. I also upgraded to magnetic drain and fill plugs. I instantly noticed somewhat smoother shifting and faster synchro spin-ups.
The plugs I used were "M18X1.5X12 = BMW CAR, LATE TRANSMISSIONS, STANDARD" from dimple, http://www.drainplugmagnets.com/
They were about 1/4" shorter in length than the OE plugs, but the threads matched up perfectly. They also included 4 extra crush washers. Costs, $30 each.

I found that the torque spec for almost every transmission is 37 ft-lbs, but for 6 spd transmissions, it's 26.
Torque specs here http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-ZHP-misc/i-Kgk5QGL/0/XL/01-08-2011-115718AM-XL.jpg

PSH. Didn't want a shoutout anyway...

Special thanks to Evan who sat in the back of the car and watched me finish up then drove it after!

Impressions:
Slop down 85% (total guess). It's a lot tighter to the point where the slop is acceptable - it's no gated shifter - even some new cars have more play in their shifters.
Shifts are notchier and more direct.
Downward throws (1-2, 3-4 etc) are noticeably shorter, but the upward throws aren't too much different.
Totally worth it. I'm very happy with it so far.

VCG? VANOS too?

Started with the CCV and have that just about done. Ordered the wrong lower intake boot. Then got the OFHG done. Then yes, VANOS seals and VCG (not leaking). The VANOS seals were a lot easier than I thought. This is on the coupe we picked up in September that will be for sale soon. I was pleasantly surprised how clean it was. Next on the list is aligning the cutoff on the umnitza depo/fx-r upgrade lights. Their jig is horrible. Not looking forward to baking them and cutting the epoxy apart.

Looking good Matt. I just washed mine yesterday and the wife followed though with the interior today. I put a coat of Klasse AIO and then SG on her TSX--I really like that stuff and not as hard as ppl say to apply. Looks really nice. I also met with the paint/body guy and had planned to drop the Bimmer off with them tonight, but I misplaced one of the keys. Drove me crazy all day. Finally stopped and said a prayer and found it in the only coat pocket I had not checked a little bit later--I don't even remember wearing that one. Well Amen anyway. I'm trying to make arrangement to drop the car tomorrow, but they are calling for 3-8" here. We shall see. He plans to take it to his shop (vice the mobile tent he uses at the dealers).

Dropped the X5 2" today with Johnrando 's assist. Pretty straightforward and by the time I did the second front I was a "Texas expert". Thoughts on which Y pipe I should get?
The first one is like $30, and the second is around $65 and claims to be a smooth transition. I want the smooth transition, yes? This is going to replace my first muffler after the cats. On the 323 it is a dual in single out muffler so a Y pipe makes sense to replace it.

Thanks!

Hard water here, definitely a pita when I wash the car, which is why I do it do rarely (1/month at most). California Duster more often than not. Or a wash/wax which obviously handles the spots. I can't remember the last time I drove the car in rain or on wet roads, probably a year ago. That's why I don't have to wash it often.

Curious about the water restriction in LA since Sacramento is on one. Has the media been discussing fines for using water on unnecessary things?

Excuse the interuption but I felt the need to announce that I installed Whiteline poly RTABs yesterday. I'm really liking them since they eliminate the rubbery feel. I'll probably end up going poly on the fcabs some time in the future. There is an small increase in harshness but in my opinion the increased stability is worth the trade off.

I think we have to get our smog checks done every two years in CA, right? If so, I'm waiting on that day to come (didn't have to smog last year) so after, I can toss them on for another worry-free two years. Assuming cops don't smell me and pull me over or anything like that of course.

I'm leaving the legality of it up to my indy guy. If he has no solution for me, I'm fine with them going on as-is anyway.

Yes, it's biennial (not biannual). If you didn't do it last year, it will happen this year before you get your new tags. I believe it's based on original model year of the car therefore so a 2004 model year car will be smogged every even year, 2005 every odd year. Also, you are exempt for the first 6 years. My 2005 was exempt until 2011, makes sense as I've only smogged it twice.

I didn't have to smog last year and I bought it in May of 2012 so I'm guessing I'll be getting a letter from the DMV to smog sometime later this year.
Gives me a two-year window to enjoy the headers....hehe.

As for the random smog checkpoints, I can't guarantee I will never encounter one but the chances are slim. I only drive to school and work, both of which are within 8 miles or less from my place, and all three cities have a relatively high median/average income....I'm sure they mostly hold those stops in cities where street racing is prevalent? Or lower income? Or maybe even in super tree-hugging environmentalist cities....either way, I'm willing to take that chance. I've lived here for just about 17 years now and I have never seen a smog checkpoint (or even DUI) in my three neighboring cities.

At most we just have choppers chasing down fleeing car chase suspects.

Hahahaha... you have only a few choices if you want a BMW that works

Best/most reasonable/easiest to find/etc - any 1602/2002 as long as it's 1975 or earlier, no final year models

Coolest easy to find, but expensive as hell to restore/maintain - E9. E3 works too if you want a big sedan, but they need a drivetrain swap and are just as expensive as E9's to deal with. E3 will still need to be 1975 or earlier as they were produced until 1977, E9 ended in 1975 so all years. E9 was succeeded by E24 6er's, while E3 was the predecessor of the E23 7er

A good choice is the E12 5er's, but only the first three model years 1972-1975.

If you get into anything older than those choices it can become extremely expensive very fast. Also, most of the cars built from 1960-1968 were not that amazing as that time period was a rebuilding era for BMW

There is one way around to the 1975 rule, but it only gets you up to 1985-1986. There is a rare version of the E28 5er known as the 524td (it's a diesel, only came to this country for 2 years). Diesel vehicles produced before 1997 are exempt.

I have found a loophole in the rules that I can use for my E21 that exists in San Diego county, but it doesn't apply for you as your county doesn't have the same loophole. My loophole also only gets me out of the biennial smog, I technically still have to comply with all the smog rules.

Oh yeah, shop supervisor is still doing his job

Is yours just a "sniffer" test? In Cali they do a visual inspection for illegal parts as well. Most of California also required a 2 speed emissions test, one at 15mph, one at 25mph. There are certain parts of the state (extremely few) that only require an idle emissions test, and even less that only require smog at transfer of title (this is the loophole I might use for my E21)

Not keen on this yahoo venting about how this is a big nuisance to him and everyone who agrees with him. "If you have a tricked out Honda or a pick-up truck that you have gone ahead and made smog-illegal after passing smog, now you can get busted for it." As you should! Nothing wrong with being environmentally responsible and I support state's initiative to keep everyone in line. Nobody's forcing anybody to drive a hybrid, just do your part. I'm no tree hugger but I'm also aware of what we're doing to the environment. In my view, I am glad that at least someone is doing something about it. Some 20 years ago, LA smog was absolutely hideous and now it's not nearly as bad, thanks to the smog regulations imposed by the government. So whatever, complain away. DUI checks and Smog checks both make a positive difference.

A few things that I have to say

-smog laws were INITIALLY passed for the purpose of cleaning up the air quality, the requirements that exist nowadays are not always best for the environment but instead best for the companies that pay lobbyists to convince the ARB to pass certain laws. Example from personal experience: when my E21 needed a new catalytic converter I would have bought any CARB approved one that was adequate or better (most likely I would've bought one that was overkill), I instead had to buy the one an only item approved for my specific car.

-LA is a bad example. It has hills that hold the smog in, but you also have to remember that a lot of the pollution that existed in the past was due to heavy industry that no longer calls LA home. The cleanup of LA's air is not only because of smog laws, although I agree it did help.

I wouldn't doubt that the quality of the smog program is far from perfect. Much like any government service really. It's not surprising that people take advantage of the the laws in place to benefit financially and be a pain in the ass by doing so. However, it's better than nothing and, in my view, it should be there. Obviously, the discussion about how we can make it better should be encouraged. However, I can't agree with the argument that we simply don't need this. To me, it seems ignorant of the big picture.

I'd say they are off a good 1/8-3/16". Does it really take this much epoxy to seal these in? Really? Took me almost 2 hours to cut/grind my way to freeing the housing. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/23/tamupe2y.jpg

The problem w/ smog regulations, and many government regulations, is that they stay there forever (or too long). Government is too slow to make changes, good or bad.

Got my rear passenger side bumper trim piece put on after ECS sent me the correct part. Hopefully it doesn't look too new compared to the other pieces… which will make me want to replace the others!

Off the coast of Cape Canaveral in '01. Trying to do a BSP (rider transfer), boat was taking more than 24 degree rolls as it was pegging the meter. Did that for about an hour and they finally called it and we tried again later. I think more than half the crew had buckets by their side. That was the worst I ever felt without actually puking.

Yep, I did a transfer like this... Not that bad of weather, but took a RHIB from one ship to another, about 10-12' swell... I also did a helo transfer too.

Three years ago out here we hit a nasty storm and got beat up for 3 days straight... That was 90+ winds and 50-60' seas... Nothing like seeing blue water come over the side of a ship that has 40' of freeboard... :eeps

Joop,

I can only imagine how that would look! I was in similar seas back in '96 when I was onboard a Los Angeles class submarine in the North Irish Sea transiting out from Scotland. It was on New Year's day and the seas were 50' swells....talking about a rough ride! We couldn't submerge for 8 hours until we got into an area where we owned the water space beneith us. I was on watch in the sonar shack so I got to see the screens and hear the ocean rush past us thru the hull...

Once we submerged it was all good and everyone got much better afterwards. I can only imagine how you guys have to deal with the constant pitching and rolling in heavy seas.....just be safe out there! :thumbsup

I think that would be the worst Charlie. That fact that in theory you could have a smooth ride but because of the rules every one had to deal with it.

Vs being on a ship with no option to submerge and get under the weather!

Thanks! And thanks for the idea :-D The guy was really good about it on ebay. At first I wanted to cancel the auction b/c I didn't realize it was broken when I bid on it from my phone. I then changed my mind and figured what the heck, I'll just drill it and zip-tie. The auction had ~$14 s/h. He came back and said he'd be glad to cancel or he'd reduce the shipping to a realistic amount. So $0.99 winning bid plus $6 s/h FTW! I agree about the value.

Sitting at Mr. Tire in Burke, VA, M&B new sneakers for mama's X5, noticed this week the negative rear camber had just about worn out the inner edge of the rear tires, got 26K miles out of them, ordered 275/40-20 & 315/35-20 DWSs from TireRack which then got delayed by the little east coast snowstorm. Fronts still have good even tread remaining but found out the xDrive system must sense no more than 2-3/32nds difference between any corner or else it can throw error codes, so replacing all 4 to prevent any xDrive problems.

Had my wife pick up a OEM expansion tank, level sensor, and a gallon of coolant yesterday. Replaced the expansion tank on the 323, bled the system and did a 15 min idle and 10 min drive last night with no further signs of a leak or issue. Could find no obvious leaks on it, but I only turned it upside down and filled, so no pressure.

One thing to note, I was having an issue with interment low coolant at high speed (i.e. >75mph) for the last 6-9 months. This was a non Genuine BMW tank and sensor. I had no issue today on my hour drive to Navy drill. I meant to ohm out the sensor, but forgot. Just glad I was diligent on checking my mirrors or I may not have seen it.

Faster acceleration. Lower top speed. Lower fuel economy.

The ZHP Auto comes w/ the 3.64 stock. It's basically what makes the the ZHP faster than a normal auto 330.

Agreed but Jordan specified performance difference of ZHP vs non-ZHP in his post, not what would come from swap. I guess acceleration would be different as well.

IMHO, if you wish to go the route of short diff the 3.62 LSD from the M3 is the best option

eh, i kinda still like the pre LCI better. Throw an Mtech kit on it and you can't even tell aside from the tails.

They're the taillights on the LCI's. The e9x generation has a "facelift" and "pre-facelift" like the e46. Although it's referred to as LCI and pre-LCI. The blacklines are the taillights on the left side of his car. The pre-lci lights (stock lights) are on the right.

almost right.

Blacklines aren't LCI, theyre actually pre LCI specific and basically just european tails with more clear sections and different "lines" around the edging for a different definition of the sections than the OEM ones for the US market.

Got a 4 wheel alignment and a smoke test done; my DISA valve's seal be leakin!

The Z4M control arm bushings put the front wheels "literally off the scale" lol.

... and the hood, which makes a HUGE difference in the appearance in the LCI vs pre...
The LCI simply looks more aggressive IMO. The Blacklines definitely help add some of that aggressive flair that the pre needs. I do have to wonder though; how come you're modding her car? Don't you have an M3 to mod? lol

The LCI hood is what makes an e90 look good. Without that it's kinda ugly to me.

Yesterday I finished up the headlight install on the coupe, along with splash guards and under tray. Today I installed the Symbian refurb mirror on my car. They sent me one with the compass (yea!!). Also changed out the sunroof switch trim since I no longer need the Homelink up there since it is on the mirror and also repalced the third brake light trim after the antenna o-ring decided to leak. I put the mirror from my car into the coupe since it was no longer of very much use after the stuff leaked out or whatever it does. Productive day, just wish I could run to the parts store. PS fluid flush needed on the coupe........

TBH,
I would look on ebay. There are some better looking ones there as the one I have the "1" is scratched off. I also have the gray trim piece that I was going to sell with it. If I remember correctly, make sure you get one with the white numbers as it supports rolling codes. If I don't get any bites selling as a package, then you have first dibs.

Today I ended up having the faulty thermostat and water pump replaced. Best part is that the dealer offered to discount the cost of parts and have me pay the labor. :thumbsup

Bought myself a beater E32, haha.

Its clunky, either needs new half shafts or a drive shaft. i think halfshafts because if I am coasting and put in in neutral the issue is still there, drove on the freeway okay.

Engine and tranny are beautiful, just needs some TLC on the driveline and cosmetics.

I took my ZHP in for a 2 year service/check up (I don't drive it much). Had to pick a new shop because I took it to the dealer a few times and I quickly got tired of their prices and inability to fix things. I found a guy who owns a BMW/Porsche shop here in SF, and him and his wife seem to know their stuff. I got an oil change (he uses something called "total" oil, which is approved for our cars), had my VCG changed ("we don't touch VR gaskets! We put Elring in yours"), and he fixed my e-brake not holding on my hill (house is on a 30 degree incline. Now it holds!). The BMW dealer had 2 chances with this brake thing and they couldn't get it right. One odd thing is he put my tire pressure for 39p front and 46p rear. Seems a bit high. I will lower it back to whats on the door jam this weekend.

Its always nerve-wracking starting a relationship with a new shop. I feel a lot better now as it seems these guys really know what they're talking about.

One (small) niggle is that he left 1 or 2 tiny spots of blue stuff (RTV?) around the VCG at the front of the engine. Most people wouldn't care but I am pretty detail oriented. Can I clean this stuff off myself? if so, how does it come off?

I want to clean it up before I post pics, its green on tan leather.

pretty sure its a open diff.. Wasn't the LSD only for 750's?

735iL, (2nd one my family has owned). I actually learned to drive on my family's old 735 so this car meant something to me.

I was getting 20.6 mpg out of the big tank when I brought her home, not bad for 230K! I think i'll do plugs, air filter, and fuel filter when I get the driveline issue sorted. Drive it for a bit then I'll sell in a few months.

I use GS Tuning in Santa Rosa. I recently had them do my VCG and they put the blue sealant there, too. I had a BMW mechanic do some other work on my car and he saw the blue stuff and said "oh well it looks like they at least knew what they were doing."

Seems normal to me at this point.

I believe you can trim some of the excess off.

Its more smear spots. nothing is showing where the actual gasket is.. I will get some paper towels and warm water and see if it wipes off.

Did you seriously just say "niggle"?? What the hell is that word anyway?? And your nerves would be much more at ease if you'd get your hands dirty and DIY a bit.

You haven't seen where I have moved to, Jon. My street has a 30 degree incline now. No jacking up. Also don't have a garage. So no taking parts of the engine apart. I have done plenty to the car myself this year, I just haven't posted about it.

They are supposed to put some on the half moons and just at the top edge of those half moons. Completely normal. If you are that "anal" (not saying that in a bad way), then you could take a razor blade and carefully cut the excess off.

39 front and 46 rear are the tire pressures on the door jamb. It is what's specified for the stock tire sizes (225-40R18 front and 255-35R18 rear)

I bought 6 spark plugs for my e90. Found a good deal in O'Reilly Auto Parts: $6.29 + tax for each. I paid $41 OTD. Their price is better than all the places I looked online.

Only negative was: they were not in stock, so I waited one day

Thanks. Strange. For some reason I had 32/38. I though the 39 and 46 were for max load. Like, don't go over that psi.
