Yesterday - last day on summers - took the car out for a tiny little bit of hooning in the wet. Felt great to be back with her after a week of being away!

Currently sitting in town fair tire waiting for my blizzaks to be put on style 73s (thanks tony!) and then onto my car. Gonna be an interesting style change from 135s to 73s.. I'll post pics when it's all done. Can't wait to rip the zhp up to the slopes this year.

Damn that looks nice! Looks to be in great shape. I've never noticed how big those front/side turn signals are before. I'm guessing that was maybe just a USA thing and the Euro version looked better? I wish I would run across something like that for sale around here.

If it's anything like the 7, there's a switch you can flip in the trunk area to reduce battery drain during extended storage

Those are US, Euro turn signals for E12/E28 were below the bumper. DOT requires that front turn signal is visible to a car driving next to you

Is that why my E30's turn signals were only visible from the front? lol
This is even back when it had diving boards. The amber lights on the side only lit up but never blinked when signaling. Only the front ones blinked.

What size and offset did you get? And btw, those wheels look AWESOME... (see sig).

18x8.5 ET 35 for the front and 18x9.5 ET 33 for the rear.
I decided on these over VMRs and Alufelgen after seeing some cars with them on various forums - yours was one of them. :) Because I haven't seen many of these on E46s, even their homepage only shows E90s with them.

Also got a replacement roundel for the hood and a steering wheel emblem.

Had to drive an altima to NYC for the holiday....

best part about getting a rental is the feeling of how amazing our cars are once I returned(even if they were limping along):

Finally got to another piece of the lean air/fuel mixture that I once thought was mice in the DISA(see link below) -

Replaced Fuel Pump, Fuel filter, Relay and Plugs; fuel filter was clogged (96k) and was causing the pump to degrade - high fuel pulse, bad mpg, not smooth over RPM band etc...few more PM items and then on to the fun!

When I was replacing my OFHG and all associated hoses and tubes to and from the oil pan, I found that the insulation on the tubes were mice meat. Pretty much the insulation was eaten off. Me thinks, the PO had the ZHP parked somewhere outside and never bothered to do engine clean-up maintenance.

Great story about my afternoon long wheel swap between my ZHP and the 328i.

It's three in the afternoon. Woke up from a nap after work. Decided I should swap wheels. So I started out on the left front and went clockwise around the vehicles at the same time.

I actually used the widowmaker to do both cars at the same time. One side at a time.

All of the wheels on the 328 came off clean no hassle. So I begin by taking all of the bolts off of the LF ZHP wheel and the fucker is welded to the brake hub. Great.

So I gather some implements to remove it.

One can of WD-40? Check.
One 12 oz. hammer? Check.
Plank of wood? Check.
Rubber mallet? Nope

Way to go Dad. You left me with every other tool imaginable...but a mallet.

So the other tools work as good as army of ants attempting to spin the earth.

After an hour of struggling with the first corner I give up. Go take the wheel off of the 328i and it comes off with no effort.

Wonderful.

Back to the ZHP, just give the wheel a huge blow on the bottom with the plank and hammer combo. Loose. Finally pulls off with a few more blows. Swap wheels and liberally apply white lithium grease to prevent this again.

Moving to the back left wheel comes off easy. Awesome smooth sailing.

Getting to the good part, bare with me.

Final corner. Right front. Wheel lugs are off. Same situation as the first wheel. Lubed it up with WD-40 and tried the same method...only problem is its 5:00 and in about 18 minutes the sun will dip below the horizon. Fuck.

Let's speed this up...drop car and start her up. Okay just need to break the welds and then it should come off. Reverse. Gas. Stop. First. Gas. Stop...Repeat. so far so good. First. Gas. Stop. Thwunk! Heart is skipping beats. How much of a fuck up is it this time? Widowmaker to the rescue! Lift up the car from the wheel and she rolls right out of there. Keep cranking the jack to inspect the damage.

Damage is minimal. Great luck I have been having today. The brake dust shield took the blow and bent a little bit. Hammered some clearance to the rotor and slam the style 44 on there and torque that shit down. It's six pm now...class is in an hour! I clean up and wash all of the brakedust off of my hands.

Got away with a major blunder today. Consider this your friendly reminder to put some antiseize between your hubs and rotors next time they're off. Would have sped this task up immensely.

Also...the rotors I ordered came in today right after sunset...pissed about that. Now I get to deal with the breaks after this whole ordeal! Joy.

TL/DR: Don't drive your car with none of your lugs on one corner and expect things to turn out well. In the end, all of my wheels are swapped and my ZHP now rides on style 44s. With some meaty Kumho Ecsta 4s with flatspots and less than 5000 miles on them :)

Oh...class was canceled...I didn't check my email before I left. Failing hard on all fronts today.

Finally installed the Aux stereo input I got last year. Taking the trim pieces off is a real PITA. But everything else went smoothly so no complaints. Put the outlet just to the left of the right side seat heater. Looks like it belongs and has very easy access.

Tomorrow I start on fixing my bumper (sleeping policeman ripped off a couple rivets from engine pan). After that, I get to replace shocks/ struts and springs, with CAB and RTAB bushing replacements. How fun!

New steering guibo installed. Difference? Very small :( I figured with 175k it was well due for a replacement..

Control arms are <60k miles. Fcabs are new. Alignment is new. Shocks/struts/springs are recent. Tires are recent, brakes are brand new. Yet my steering still has very small play in it. What could it be? Possibly because the steering rack has 175k on it? Tie rods and ends are in good shape as well as sway bar end links.

Also when I brake I still get some steering wobble/vibration. Sticking calipers maybe? Rotors and pads are <5k miles.

Kind of annoying trying to make a car with 175K miles drive like a brand new car.. UGH

Also my car groans/creaks sometimes at low speeds over bumps. Shock mounts, right?

Yeah, the website shows them on a Z4 as well, they look great... I have the same size you chose for the fronts, but I wanted square, so I have that size all around. I do want to space out the rears just a little bit, probably 10mm. Yours should look good.

I wanted to go square too, but didn't want to buy new tires...so just decided on a set that would let me swap the tires from the factory wheels onto these.

They did tell me that the rear fenders would have to be rolled though.

Is that when they put the wheel on a machine and change the wheel weights as necessary? I had that done last year when the Michelins were installed. I think sticking calipers is likely. For the play in the steering.. Now that is bugging me a little bit.

I didn't get out of work early enough to avoid the snow, and attempted a few absolutely terrifying miles in some really not that bad snow...in my summer tires.

I had no traction at all, the slightest tip of the throttle and DSC was kicking in. A few sketchy situations, I couldn't even go above 20 mph.

Unfortunately I haven't been around in order for me to order my snow wheel/tire set, and it's starting to become an issue. I'll be gone on business all next week so I don't need to worry about it then, a week of work, and then I'll be gone again for xmas. So, hopefully I can hold out until I get back from xmas break. I'll be watching the weather while I am there to see if I need to order them for a Monday delivery.

I been using these products back when it was called The Perfect 3000. Now 3m has changed the name to Perfect-it but it is still the same great products.

There are 3 parts to the system and then a finishing glaze. If you use it in the system, the results are purely amazing.

Tried to troubleshoot the rain sensing wipers. I think this is the first I've tried to use them since the wheel swap and new windshield. They work one time when put into the sensing "on" setting and any time I move the scroll wheel a notch. After research I pulled fuse 15 and they now work in variable intermittent mode. I'm thinking the sensor wasn't installed flush or may be bad. Need to look closer in daylight. I actually don't mind the intermittent (non-sensing) mode. Just bugs me it doesn't work correctly.

Hopped into the wagon Wednesday morning. Unlock the car, turn they key and everything goes black. Great battery just went flat.. I hooked up to the trickle charger and took off in the M5 for the day.

I come home and its still dead as a door.. I check the receipts and it says the battery was done <3 years ago with a Interstate. What gives? I find it weird that the car unlocked, cranked for a second then just went black.

Any suggestions? Or should I just get a new battery? I plan to get it tested today.

IMO, a car battery does not go bad in three years though..

Any suggestions? Or should I just get a new battery? I plan to get it tested today.

IMO, a car battery does not go bad in three years though..

We had a similar thread on the forum a couple weeks ago and it turned out to be a loose ground cable. On that one th big indicator was that he couldn't jump start the car either.

Check out how clean my wheels are. Car hasn't been washed in weeks. I LOVE Akebono ceramic pads - work great AND clean. Win-win!

Got wiper blades for the e90. The driver's side is 24" and passenger's side is 19" ... The guys in Advamce Auto Parts said they are a little different from OEM and so the little covers that came from the factory don't fit any more. I saved the covers in case I go back to OEM one of these days.

I've had a 3.38 lying around for a while now. My friend texted me last night asking if I wanted to put it in, so I said why not. What better way to spend a cold Friday night? Swapped it in and I'm loving it so far. The car is in a much better RPM range after shifting now. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the install, but here's a picture of the toys they have over at his house. There's a Z06 sleeping in the garage as well, plus a few Harley's.

Well today nothing.

But yesterday I cleaned my carpet with a bottle of carpet cleaner I had laying around. I did get some stains out but I still want to do a full shampoo at some point.

I also adjusted my sunroof as it was sagging in the rear and the front.

Not today as well...but yesterday, I washed and waxed the convertible. As this car is new to me, I had a shop buff out the paint swirls and surface scratches (something I am not ballsy enough to try myself). I got it back on Friday looking absolutely amazing....but it needed a wash plus a full waxing.

The vert now looks amazing considering it'll be 9 years old in January!

Yesterday (with some work done on Saturday) replaced 3 heater hoses, one power steering hose, and the starter. I have now replaced, cleaned, or updated all the major maintenance items on the ZHP except for the TB (clean), ET base plate (might need replacement), and CCV (replace). The only thing bugging me is a slow oil leak. I think it's the oil pan gasket, but it could be the rear main seal. Either way it's going to be an expensive repair, and not one I'm willing to to myself.

Next step will be my first attempt at paint correction and polishing followed by sealant.
===
Edit: My list of remaining maintenance was far from complete... should be
--Clean throttle body and replace gasket
--ET base plate
--CCV and related hoses
--Rear subframe bushings and weld on reinforcement kit
--Oil pan gasket and weld in VAC oil pan baffle
--New flywheel and engine rear main seal, when existing clutch gives out (clutch has 50K miles on it)
--New harmonic damper on snout of crankshaft

Assuming I do one of those every 3 months, by the time I'm done it will then be time to replace the fuel pump, VCG, and OFHG all over again! :-)

Drove to court to get out of a ticket (75 in a 55), dismissed with only court costs!

There are many things I dislike about Memphis, but I do like that they are so lenient on tickets.

Then I drove it to work, she asked for some oil when I pulled into the shop, gave her a little, oil change is coming in another 100 miles or so (might be next year though). Valve cover gasket leak is getting worse (is only about 35,000 miles old). Something else to add to the list.

LivesNearCostco

Three places:
1) on PS hose from reservoir to pump (before replacing) and high-pressure power steering line;
2) A little on the plastic undertray (possibly from PS hoses)
3) On oil pan and metal reinforcement tray

I replaced the high-pressure PS hose, OFHG and VCG about 3 years and 48,000 miles ago, so one of them could have started leaking again but the waffle part of block under OFH does not have oil on it. Maybe it's a combination of oil pan gasket and the PS hoses. I'm not sure if the high pressure PS hose is actually leaking (like the last one was 3 years ago) or if PS fluid was dripping from the reservoir-to-pump hose onto the high-pressure hose. Also a few times at track, AutoX, or during an oil change, I dripped oil onto the plastic engine covers and that oil dripped down to the bottom, but I'm quite sure in addition to that there is a leak somewhere.

Where do you see the oil concentrating?

I've been using these people for about 7 years now. They all know my car and have been very good with her... there's a good detail shop right next to them who I use to detail the interior (too lazy to do the inside during winter months) and they have consistently done an awesome job cleaning and detailing the interior for me...so I use them. As for leaving my ZHP at the valet parking....I don't have a choice and leaving it there is the lesser of the evils. At least my ZHP will be guarded 24/7 while I'm away on business. When I get back (especially late at night) the car is set up when I get dropped off and it's already running and warm inside....a plus for us "cold weather" people....

If you're running 35W ballasts and have lamin-x film on your fogs, you'll be okay. I've been running 35w ballsts on lamin-x fogs on both of my cars over 4years on the ///M and three years on the ZHP w/o any issues so far :thumbsup

If you decide to run with 55w ballasts on fogs you will run into heating issues where the plastic lens will melt. In fact, it is not recommended to run 55w ballasts on fogs...

Marcus,

I was going to run with 55w ballasts for my fogs when I upgraded them to HID but have heard too many issues regarding melting of the plastic fog housing/lens using them from others at M3Forum so I opted to stay with 35W ballasts instead. I still get decent light output but would have loved the intense light output from the 55w ballasts instead. Problem is I didn't want to chance melting my OEM fog housings as they cost a pretty penny to get.....so 35w ballasts is all I use.

I can say that at least there won't be any issues if anyone were to upgrade to HID's using 35w ballasts for their fog lights...

Today I bought the grandfather - Holy Grail BMW to keep my ZHP and my 1M company... :)

In the fall of 1987 I test drove a brand new White with Black interior BMW e30 M3. I brought it home to show my wife who at the time was pregnant with our first child. We had moved into our first home 3 months prior to this test drive and I was the only bread winner at the time. Long story shortened I knew at the time there was no way I could afford this beautiful $36,000 M3.

Today I dug into my Bucket and pulled out my list and put a great big check mark next to purchasing a 100% original 70,412 mile second owner 1988 White with Cardinal Red interior. The car is in New Hampshire which is 2500 miles or so from me. It has sat in a BMW Dinan specialty shop's show room for the last 5 years. The shop owner has offered to leave the car where it sits until spring and then fully service the car before we arrive, no charge to me. My wife and I will fly out and do a road trip of the parts of east coast that neither of us has seen then head home.

Great day for me, I had to share this. :)

I fished with a magnetic tool to no avail and decided to try and get to it from the wheel well. I still haven't found the clip but did find about 1.5 cups of solid packed frozen dirt.

Totally understandable from the perspective of keeping it original.

EVO3 was a super rare car (appx 600 built), but you also got 43hp extra from the upgrades. I would love to be able to turn my M10's into 2.5L examples, but I'm limited to 2.3L without the S14 block and I still need to source a S14 crank

I would love to add those additional HP as well but Originality is going to win out on this one. The President of our local BMWCCA has a White on Tan e30 M3 that he did the 2.5L upgrade on. He send the entire engine out to be done, seems like around $20K later it's a damn fast car. He races it regularly at Miller Motorsports track.

I just repaired some of the broken pieces on my wheel wells and undertray. The brackets that are attached to the brake ducts that are mounting points for the undertray were both broken (one severly). That type of plastic is very hard to modify as either epoxy or fiberglass doesnt adhere well. Instead I drilled a couple holes through the plastic then used fiberglass to repair/reinforce. (it really helps to weave the dry fiberglass through the holes, thus creating 'rivets' holding both sides together). Here are a couple photos, one before and one after.

In the last week, I have been spending my early Xmas present and doing much needed maintanance. This all was instigated with a slight, then moderate, then bad shimmy in frontend when braking at higher speeds. After inspecting etc, it was the FCAB on right side that was loose. So (here comes the pre-Xmas stuff) I got some extras with the Meyle HD FCABs.

http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll47/SC4ME/100_3551_zpsc0c7380e.jpg
This is a H&R Touring Cup kit with the Turner strut/mount kit with reinforcements, Meyle HD FCAB and RTAB, and the Turner RTAB limiters.

I went with the Touring Cup kit since I did not want to lower my car (already had enough bumper/splitter/undertray/wheelwell damage from scraping, etc) but wanted a little stiffer ride. Well, the results are amazing. This thing rides better than when I first got it. Not surprising considering the condition and assembly of the original struts. For example, left strut was mis-assebled since the press fit washer that goes on top of strut post and is press fit into spring support was instead up on top of spring support. The right strut had this washer properly position, but it had two washers between the spring support and strut bearing (possibly to compensate for the mis-assembled left strut? ). Either way, the new setup is awesome, got it aligned yesterday and new rubber waiting to be mounted.

I also repaired all the torn/broken plastic pieces on my undertray and bumper. Repainted my grill. Then because I was feeling so motivated, got new projectors/reflectors for my badly burnt ones and installed them yesterday. Today is engine, tranny and diff oil changes.

She is one happy car!

It also gives me the opportunity to drive this great car to many first time amazing scenic sights and locations. I'll be taking photos of my car at some these great places along the way.

Spartanburg South Carolina and the BMW factory is on our list of places to drive to, with a tour of the factory and museum.

Question to you guys that live in the South East part of the country, we are thinking about going to either Myrtle Beach area or Destin Florida. I have been to Destin FL but not Myrtle Beach. Suggestions for about either?

Picked up a new starter today. The more I read about replacing this POS on the 320, the less I want to do it... I think I'm just gonna put the car in the garage for a while and do some major maintenance while I'm changing it. I'm just gonna pull the intake manifold, do all my rubber intake hoses, all the coolant/heater core hoses, intake manifold gaskets, maybe an E12 throttle body, and I don't even know what else yet... Marveled at how well she starts after a night in -10F weather. The <20k 2012 scooby took 3 tries.

The weird noise is the HVAC blower. Probably needs to be changed but I hear it's a PITA. It works perfectly and doesn't make any noise once the car is warm, so I'm living with it for now.

Speaking of awesome wives, mine picked up my Dinan throttle body and the Dinan badge today! Very excited for when I'm home.

Also, we picked up a BMW pedal car for our daughter today. :biggrin It's a white M3 of course!!

Multi. Pretty sure they only come in multi piece.

There used to be a one piece, but most that you will ever see are multi

The one piece was an E36 7.5x17 version (or the even older smaller sizes)

Had a nice snow storm today. Tested out my new conti DWS tires. Gotta say I'm impressed. Drove without DSC with an inch of snow and handled it fine. I then went in a big empty lot to mess around... Well that was just for pure fun. I noticed after a bit the car wasn't accepting my throttle inputs and realized stabilty control was still on so I held the DSC button to turn it off. Holy crap is it much harder to control without it!

I ended up taking it out again when the snow storm was at its peak. Left the DSC on to be safe and was pleased. I definitely had to be careful but even at a dead stop pulling out of thick snow I didn't get stuck. Happy that that I know the car can handle winter great now.

Who needs AWD or fwd? I'll stick with rwd :thumbsup

After a month of the car sitting outside I decided to clean up its spot in the garage today. Unfortunately the zhp will be going back outside tomorrow as this test was to make sure the E21 fits (it's smaller than the E46, if this fits then that one surely will). Oh well... will hopefully get to work on the starter swap tomorrow

Car has been in the shop since Monday of last week :(

Car had to get bumper repainted. The paint was starting to chip, so I submitted a claim to BMWUSA and they approved it....(they better for a 2012 car with 11k miles on it).

Anyways, bodyshop got the car and found out there was never any primer underneath the bumper to begin with...kinda odd. They added, that even with their modern chemicals, they couldn't use the chemicals to re-prep the bumper for paint.

So BMW had to order another bumper to get painted...car should be ready around Tuesday or Wednesday...hopefully.

It worries me that there was no primer underneath the bumper...was it in an accident? Who knows :/

Been driving a X1 for this past week, fun car...but the 8 speed transmission is annoying.

Glad they covered it and a new bumper. Hopefully just a skipped step in the factory, but it is a bit worrisome.

Car is indeed a lemon law/buyback.

But it was because of an airbag light that was contributed to a failed fuse box. I have all BMW records regarding why it was bought back.

It does still have the 4yr, 50k warranty with a 2yr up to 100k extension on service...So if it was in an accident it wouldn't make sense why they would buyback and maintain warranty.

To add on, when we were at BMW looking at the bumper we checked all other 1 series bumpers on the lot to see if they were painted the same way (on the edge of the bumpers, there is like a 1/8" gap from where the paint is and where the clearcoat starts...pretty noticeable. They were all the same painted, so that kinda rules out a 3rd party bodyshop I would assume

I think I also have a bad ground somewhere, I'll look for that once I get this pos in

Honestly, I think I'm gonna have to remove the intake manifold. If so, I'm changing this rubber bellows and gonna find an E12 528i 65mm throttle body

FUBAR...

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/jenuzaqu.jpg

To recap ongoing issues I'm finding

Alt mount broken (already knew that, got a new one)

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/eqe5ute8.jpg

Both radiator hanger bushing things have broken off the rubber part and I can't get the other half out
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/ana5egyn.jpg

I have no idea how to get this coolant hose off (it's next to the block behind the fuel distributor)
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/asa9utys.jpg
Other end is under the intake manifold by the throttle body
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/ezyse9eh.jpg
...and it's hard as a rock, I need to change it so it doesn't burst on me

Check out my plugs, changed these 20k miles ago when I got the car :(
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/azajy7az.jpg

Left to right is 4, 3, 2, 1

E21. Nah, the hose clamp is off I just can't get my hand in there to grab it.

Edit: I realized you're talking about the one with the label, that's one of the lines to the fuel distributor. I'm talking about the one in the background coming off that metal pipe against the block with the little clamp on it

JP...wouldn't it be better if you pull the whole engine out???? Not completely out...just lifted out enough to go under?

Honestly I don't know. Best part was when I told Carl I needed to change my starter, he told me to "have fun"

My parts list for him to order me now consists of fuel dist line seals, possibly new injectors + seals, those bushing things for the radiator, the coolant hose, 6ft of vacuum line, I need to trade him my 90amp E30 alt for one that he has on the shelf...

I hate CIS, I don't understand why Porsche and Mercedes used it for so long. Honestly I'm starting to think it might be easier to just swap in a 6cyl, but I haven't even started planning for how to deal with the referee. Maybe M42...

Just remembered he has that spare S14, I wonder if he'd sell it to me

Edit: Lawrence, I need to get the AFM out to pull this bracket off that holds the starter in. Going from underneath won't help until this is removed

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/12/17/3ajyharu.jpg
