Does it really work? I found that it doesn't really. Speaking of range, I'm quite unimpressed by mine. I'd say 20-25 feet at best. My key is brand new too :(
My VW Eurovan has 3 times that range.

Yea it definitely worked for me. If I'm walking towards the front of the car, it usually only works within 20 ft . By doing the chin method I was able to be atleast 100-120 or so feet away and unlock it. I simply pointed the metal portion of the key right to my chin and it worked. I remember reading about it on the E46fanatics page somewhere.

It's funny because last weekend my friend and I tested this theory. I've been doing this since high school and it easily doubles the range. Without the chin method I'm good for around 24-30 feet, under the chin I was easily 100 feet away.
Repaired my DISA and installed the 1.2 bar ET cap.
I just purchased the GAS 1.2 Bar ET Cap in Black.

I tried on my Mini Cooper the tricks found by Dario recently. They worked as well !
1) without the key on the ignition, turn on the high beam. They stayed on for 30 secs or so.
2) without the key on the ignition, turn the directional to the left or right. The taiillight, parking lamp, and fog light on that side stayed on.
Interesting the Mini and e46 share the same tricks.

I also found that if you press the stereo volume knob (without the key in the ignition) them stereo will play on for 30 minutes. Really helps when working on the car and wanting to listen to tunes, without having to hear the door-open beep. I bet it's the same on a mini :)

Some slight bodywork to make the valence fit correctly. It was pushed out in the middle, which in turn caused rubbing at certain steering angles. Next step is figuring out where to find Euro bumpers, then paint.

Good stuff in here guys, I've been somewhat MIA, my puppy is sick again. She's hospitalized for the weekend, hope to be able to bring her home Monday.
Anyhow, before all of that happened, I ordered my car its early christmas present, a new detailer bag. I had previously been using an Acura gym bag that I purchased after purchasing my RSX-S in late 2001. The bag was over 10 years old and had been used well past its lifetime. I went with this bag.
http://ep.yimg.com/ca/I/autogeek_2272_138054939 http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/autogeek/blackfire-detail-bag1.jpg
Kinda pricy, but if it lasts another 10 years, then that'll be worth it IMO.
Also, I received a pair of mirrors from Coby1. I broke all of the clips on my mirror caps thinking you could just pull them off (you can't BTW). They are not imola, but they look pretty good (will post pics later), they are steel grey. I had cracked the black trim around the passenger side mirror glass about 4-5 years ago backing into the garage, so I also was able to swap out that broken (it was superglued, but still broken) piece for one that is not damaged. I still need to finish my clay and wax job, but there is too much going on right now with the dog and with school.

Likin that bag
Went to the junkyard this morning to get some clips that were broken on my brake ducts. While there found a complete set of RCR tails with stealth bulbs on them. Picked up a complete set for $100 and then after research, they are the same ones Turner Motorsports sells.
Then installed my new wheel liner and brake duct plus washed the car.
Today was a good day.

DW, etal,
The oil drain plug cover was standard in 1999 & 2000, somewhere in 2001 BMW dropped it. If you try to pick it up based on your VIN, the dealer will tell you you don't need one/ don't rate one/ can't find one for your car. Ask them to look it up for a 2000 MY e46.

Well, my jacked up rear tire (from a bad RTAB) finally gave up yesterday.

I was backing into the garage after work, got out and heard this crazy loud hissing. I thought I had blown a cooling component, nope, tire was done.
Sure glad it didn't do this on the interstate.
Now I have an OEM style 135 on the car with a nearly bald Pilot sport. I'll order a replacement tire tomorrow.

I remember reading about this on another bmw site. The theory is that on narrow streets in some European cities you would leave the side marker lights on when its dark out so that passing cars won't hit you.
Perhaps we should start a "Stupid BMW Tricks" thread?

Are there LED bulbs to replace the regular bulbs in a RCR? Have been meaning to mount my RCR. But I still have the Depo LED tails. If there are LED bulbs, this might finally motivate me with a kick to my butt to mount the RCR.

Yea, I have a bunch of super bright 1156 LED bulbs at my house. They throw an error though which is the downside and the turn signals blink really fast. If you run resistors you won't have the issue anymore.. I haven't bothered.

Yes. I run a full LED setup, with the exception of running lights since they don't change state so LED is pointless with those. LED brake light, turn signal, and reverse bulbs. Use CREE CANBUS bulbs and you will get the brightest bulbs you can get but without errors and hyperflash on the turn signals. Specifically, I used 25W bulbs, but I would do 50W if I had to do it again.

The RCR are great but I put the orange bulb in them. Looking for either a plain chrome bulb or an LED bulb

Hyperflash is the company name? 50w wont melt the reflective finish?
Got a link or anything?

Hyper flash is just the act of LED bulbs that don't have the correct resistance flashing very fast when activated, like when you have a bulb out. LED bulbs require resistors to be added otherwise they will flash quickly. Buying CANBUS bulbs would be best because they already have the circuitry inside them that prevents hyper flash, and will not trigger a bulb-out warning like ones without the resistors.
I bought mine on eBay. Please PM me so I will remember to look it up later for a link. It's eBay so the sellers change constantly.

A bit of oil under the old CCV location so it was definitely time to get on with it. Took about 3 hours but I bet if I had to do it again it would take half that. Going to take my time to clean the shit out of the area and put it all together. Let's hope it won't take as long but somehow I doubt it. :facepalm

changed oil using the MightyVac - used Mahle Oil Filter this time, mainly to see how it works...(Nothing against Mann, I know most people voted for Mann when I posted a little poll; didn't want to waste it as I had already bought one, and it did have a larger pleat count vs the Mann, and 'made in Austria' and the plastic end cap and solid construction) -
everything went well, except the oil was a lot colder than last time, and had some trouble getting the last bit out...(took 7 qts of GC to reach full mark (2nd notch from bottom), so I guess I got most of it out...might have left a bit of old oil in, but not enough to matter I think). I am a still a novice at this, and this is my 2nd DIY oil change...

Nice work! Love the lift too! This is why I can't justify trading our 2007 CR-V EX-L with Nav for a BMW X vehicle. The Honda is paid for, the Nav with backup cam and XM radio are just the right amount of technology and isn't outdated; we wish it have bluetooth, but thats ok. It's great on fuel and cheap and easy to work on.

I've been MIA for about a week, been busy with school, life and dealing with the loss of my dog that passed this last Tuesday.
Replacement tire came in Wednesday, got it mounted and balanced on Thursday (tire shop didn't have to use ANY weights, Pilot Super Sports are expensive, but damn they are good!). Put it on Saturday at work in the heated shop, close enough to 5k, went ahead and rotated (side to side, you can do that with pilot super sports) the 3 that were older, the other rear tire doesn't have much life left in it. On my list. Vacuumed the trunk tonight.
Just have a few weeks of school left and then I'll be working on the front suspension that I've had in my trunk (actually removed about two weeks ago) since June.
Showed my differential some love and changed the fluid.
http://i.imgur.com/MThaSKnl.jpg
The fluid that came out looked surprisingly clean, almost exactly like new. But there were definitely metal shavings in the catch pan, so I'm glad I changed it out. I used approximately 1L before it started dripping out the fill hole, but I had bought two just in case.
I am not sure if Castrol Syntrax 75w90 is the same as Castrol Syntrax Long Life 75w90, which is the OEM fluid. The "Syntrax Long Life 75w90" seems to only bring up UK websites, so I don't know if it's a regional marketing difference for the same fluid. Either way, $10, picked it up at AutoZone, back of the bottle says it's made for extended drain intervals; good enough for me. I've got an extra (opened) bottle sitting here of about 1L. I'll save it for donation at the next Mafia meet :)

What happened to your headlights, Todd?
I'll try to be brief, which I think never happens.
ZHP got hit in late August, took it to great body shop. Got car back and driver side headlight was out, combined with issues that just lacked the quality I am used to from them. I told them I would replace bulbs and test, which failed, then I swapped ballast with passenger, still dead. Hermes told me to disconnect battery in effort to reset codes (I believe this is what disconnecting battery does) (http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?5101-HELP!-AL-HID-low-beam-doesnt-wanna-work&p=305140#post305140). - i chubbed this up as i did not actually disconnect ground from the battery.
I looked closer and found the outside air temperature sensor wire under a lot of tension with the turn signal lead wrapped around it. I suspected this was somehow involved, agreed with the body shop to take car to dealer and let them sort it and whoever 'owns' problem, pays for dealership visit.
Dealership found autoleveling code thrown, which deactivated headlight until reset. I have to believe it was the body shop not disconnecting ground and yanking the wire, which is peculiarily close to the nest of ground wires near the rear of the headlight assembly.
My thought is it's on the body shop. Car went in with lights ok. came out with one dead, that needed a code reset and the only explanation the from dealer that it happens if someone connects the wrong wire or some short like that. We'll see if they agree to pay the 125.00 inspection/resolution.
I should be getting a call from them shortly.

SS brake lines (Stoptech), bled ABS, lines, and clutch with Motul 5.1, installed 75mm wheel studs, mounted my winter wheels/tires, and changed my fuel pump. Still need to take care of my ICV
Honestly, brake pedal feel is a bit disappointing even with the ABS bleed... but what to do. I bled everything like 3 times.

Took her on a 200+ mile jaunt around NJ making the obligatory family holiday rounds.
Tore up some back roads, did some very comfortable Turnpike driving, and closed it out with an 80 mile shot down the Parkway. I pulled in the garage last night damn thankful for a car that is such an absolute pleasure to spend the day in.
Seriously-- when your car can make holiday driving enjoyable, you've got something not special.

P-man's car: new oil filter housing gasket (OFHG), both new tensioners, new pulleys, new belts, p/s fluid change, and 3 cans of BrakeKleen getting all the mess off the underside of the car. The gasket was rock hard and definitely the source of the leak.
I procrastinated on this repair for at least a month, the leak was minor at that time. Well, give it a thousand plus miles and the car was now rustproofed underneath, oil everywhere. I was still not looking forward to this repair this morning, really on the fence, called a couple of indys for labor estimates since I already had the parts. Well, $450 & $385 estimates got me motivated to go get messy, Preston doesn't have the money for that and I wasn't going to loan it to him. As David (MtnMan) said, the book time is 3-3.5 hrs but plan for 4.5-5 because OCD kicks in and you want everything to be squeaky clean. All in all, very straightforward and fairly intuitive repair.

Well, to get the badge, you have to acquire at least 10 points with Dinan. You can do it any way you'd like. They have a fair selection of E46 parts. Personally, I think their strut bars are ugly, and I want to do coilovers, so I chose to do all engine performance parts for my car. Besides, I don't want my car to be too loud, so the Dinan exhaust was plenty enough. So, for me, it was the intake (3 points), exhaust (3 points), throttle body (2 points), and engine software (2 points). Currently I have the stage 2 software, but with the TB, I can step up to the stage 3, which I will do soon enough. Then I'll have all of the performance parts they offer for our car. :)
Anyway, after a lot of thought, I will be putting the badge on the car as this one has to be earned. Too many people are buying an ///M badge and slapping it on non M cars, so being that you can't just BUY a Dinan badge, I'm gonna rock it. :thumbsup
