Gary, that makes a ton of sense for zhp owners. I love the staggered look but practicality wise it's not the best. I figure it would double the amount of distance you can get out of your tires. :thumbsup

Did my fall oil change and prepped my winter wheels and rubber for duty. Gave them a good cleaning inside and out, adjusted the pressures, and then treated them with Armour All wheel protectant. I'll wait another 2 to 4 weeks to actually put them on the car. We've been having an unusually mild and sunny October here.

Bought a new set of front tires. Swapped rims with Travis and my old tires were pretty bald on the inside. Went with some Yokohama YK580's. Man what a difference! Rides nice and quiet now. Apparently my old tires were way out of balance, no more steering wheel shake. Cost approx $335 for everything, mounting, balancing and road hazard warranty.

Yea, mine as well...

I'm running halogen headlights as well so I didn't care to "match" considering they will all look yellow. We get some bad fog, especially now so it was a perfect time.

I'm waiting for these suckers to show up. Should be pretty bright:

Just a suggestion but if you haven't done your OFHG now is the time to do it. The gasket costs about $7 and removing the Oil Filter Housing makes a lot more room to get to the CCV.

Long tubes will work with Halogen and ALs ONLY. ZKWs interfere with the tube. I have one on the 328 and it sounds amazing. I'm pissed the ZHP has ZKWs for this reason and the fact that they are burnt to a crisp...

It was two small phillips screws to unmount it. It's really no big deal, just get the E46 M3 relocation ballast thing. I'd share the part number, but I don't know it myself :/

You might need an adaptor for the 330 because of the larger MAF, but I'm not sure. Check with Cosmos.

My review is a solid 9/10.
For price it's a 10/10. Other intakes are much more expensive and I hear only lung tubes make serious difference for these cars. Other intakes work too, but long tubes are the most effective.
Quality it's a 8/10. Gotta relocate the ballast, and it has this weird foam tape that goes around my MAF to get a snug fit with the intake tube.
Performance/sound. Gets a 10/10. Sounds sick when I floor it, otherwise it's a weenie bit louder than stock. Car seems to pull a weenie bit harder in second and third too. Even my passenger felt the car was pulling a bit harder.

Would I recommend it? Yes. I didn't want to mess with my headlight either. But it is honestly no big deal.

Yeah, see I was expecting same thing... No dice. You still have to order on the phone, which is painfully slow, and then you have go there and pick it up. The door opens, its a tiny waiting room type setup and a man just appears from behind the door with a bag with your order in it. Like I said, it was a let down.

The thing of it is though, for me anyway, it was cheaper to go up there and pick up than pay shipping. But, then I'm forced into a phone order because online doesn't have the option for "pickup" in the shipping categories...

Not a great first experience for me as a buyer. They definitely have room for hosting a get together though. Perhaps we could get Florida Bimmer to set up a meet/detailing demo day... That would be cool...

Well, it's getting to that time of year. The toys go away and the winter stuff comes out of hibernation. I put the 911 into storage on the weekend, and started to get the BMW ready last night after it's last drive of the season. It was a fun drive - the new Bridgestone S04s, although sticky as hell in the summer, were pretty slippery in the 0C temps last night. I got the car washed (actually, took it through it's first touchless car wash, with no leaks, yay!) and filled up the tank with stabilizer and gas. I will have to switch over to my storage wheels & tires, and properly position it in the garage on the plastic sheet this weekend. Then I need to install the leads for the battery maintainer, plug it in, cover it.... and wait for spring. :(

Wow...that's a lot of prep to store a car. Call me lazy...but mine will sit in the weather for the winter if I had another car.

Today I started my 328i. It was a glorious moment. I was in the air by 11 and had the manifold out by 12:30. Replaced the harness with the MS42 one and removed the epedal and associated harness. Replacing the throttle cable was quite a bitch. I had to be in the footwell head first on my back with my hands over my head. If you know me...you would have found it pretty comical.

The I installed a new fuel rail on the manifold and replaced the throttle body adapter and the throttle body. Old boots went on and the old MAF fell into its natural place.

The first start was very rough and when I pulled the jumper leads the car died...

Restarted and left it going for a bit. Chances are my battery is done after sitting for over 6 months now.

It's bittersweet having to do this, but the ZHP is begging me to send its older brother off to a caring new owner.

I was supposed to be at a beer class featuring Boulevard tonight...instead I finally closed a chapter in my automotive life. Next step is cleaning out the interior then the for sale ad.

Cheers everyone.

Yeah, it's a lot of work to put cars away properly, but I've found that it pays off bigtime.

1 - Untreated fuel can not only go stale (less volatility) but can also leave gummy deposits or varnish on things like carbs, fuel injectors, fuel distributors, etc. Those deposits can create driveability problems that can become expensive to fix. It can turn a simple carb rebuild into a job requiring specialized professionals.
2 - Tires get flatspotted if not "prepared" properly (overinflate, put on foam pads). Tires exposed to the winter cold age much faster than if you store them indoors for the winter - but you have to be careful not to put them in your furnace room, the ozone from the electric motor can wreck the rubber. For this car I have a crappy old set of tires on a spare set of wheels, I can leave them on the car and don't have to worry about overinflating or foam blocks.
3 - A battery left in the car, connected, will probably be dead in the spring; disconnected, it will likely work but will have a shortened life. Best thing to extend the life of a battery in a seasonal car is a smart battery maintainer like the CTEK or Genius units. Well worth the ~$100, it's doubled the life of my seasonal car batteries. I actually rotate the one charger between 5 batteries.
4 - The plastic sheet is to prevent moisture from the concrete from attacking the underside of the car. I've noticed that since I started using the plastic I have no corrosion on the brake discs in the spring, before there was always a light coat. I use heavy-duty vapour barrier from Home Depot.
5 - you need to seal up air intakes and exhausts to ensure that rodents don't make their way in. It's very expensive to get the mouse nest out from between the shroud and cooling fins on a 911 motor, and you only find out when your car starts overheating and smelling like barbeque (ok so I made that last part up).

I'm probably a little fanatical in taking care of my stuff, but that's why everyone always wants my used cars. They're usually in immaculate condition! :innocent

BTW Justin, you may want to try a CTEK or a Genius to try to recover your battery. My CTEK has salvaged batteries declared to be dead and that my regular Sears charger wouldn't charge. Actually, the current battery in the 911 was one and I've used it now for another 3 years since then.

I'm not sure if it's recommended by BMW, but for the fuel it may not be a bad idea to add a container of Chevron Techron additive to your fresh tank of gas. It used to be recommended by Porsche for any fuel-related problems, does a great job cleaning out the system.

^Agreed. I run that stuff every 1500 miles in all of the cars at our household.

orange260z

When the tires are new the flatspots eventually work out. With older tires it can become permanent.

On that note, I've been very happy with the ride/handling/wet performance of my new Bridgestone S04 PPs, but find that they flatspot REALLY quickly. If I don't drive the car for a few days I will have vibrations until the car (tires) warm up. "Honest officer, I was zigzagging down the road to warm up my tires!!"

My Bstones are one of the newest tires, and they flatspot (parked) much worse than the RE050s I had before, or the Pirelli P Zeros that came on the car. I never thought about Nitrogen, will have to try that sometime. The big sell for Nitrogen here is that it's less susceptible to pressure change with the change in ambient temps.

I noticed this quite pronounced when I put new Kumho Ecsta 4X on the fronts last spring. Bruce is the one who clued me in to the oil (?) settling on the tires when they are newer. He has huge spots on his shop (work) floor where the Osh Kosh truck tires have leeched. I think it has gotten better on the Bimmer, but I don't drive my son's car that often. He just put new rears on. Will have to ask him if he notices it there as well.

You can always try "AGYouTube" for the coupon code to get free shipping. I found it in one of their YouTube videos so that makes me wonder if it might be a permanent deal. It worked for me 4 or 5 months ago.

My secret has only been tested on a leather steering wheel... I don't know if it'll do anything for you!

Also it's not much of a secret. It's a 50/50 mix of Simple Green and Isopropyl Alcohol sprayed on a towel and rubbed very lightly on the wheel. Also works for buttons.

Will be doing two firsts today. I will be doing first oil- filter change/thermostat (running a touch to the left so for some peace of mind) on my "new" e46 m3. Also, first time my younger son, the Jake, will be assisting. Ever since I picked the car up last week he has been bothering me to get under there and change the oil. Looking forward to it.

With respect to the thermostat. I've been doing a lot of research on the m3 and have found that on the open highway a lot of these cars run a slight bit to the left of dead center on the cooling system gauge. However, I'm going to change the therm anyway.

The only problem I am having with my gauge is that after driving and it sits and idles the gauge does not reach top dead center. I would assume, even on the M, that it should reach top dead center? I did read that the gauge on the M is an actual gauge unlike the one on the ZHP. I guess the only real way to determine the temp is to activate the OBC. I will try that today before I replace the thermostat. Is ideal operating temp 180?

Worked on the Honda tonight at work (it needs love too!).

Cabin filter and plugs were cake, but the serpentine belt, WoW, 3 hours. The k-series engine in the SUV is nearly smashed into the passenger strut tower, with only an inch (or less) room to work with. Meanwhile, gobs of room on the drivers side. I ended up loosening the front bumper and removing the passenger headlamp to gain more access and have more room. What a mess!

Not what I did/am doing today but rather what BP (of Bridgeport, CT) is doing today. He's driving north of Boston right now to pick up a set of black M3 front seats for my son Preston's car, the seats are heated & manual and are the last pieces needed for a black interior conversion. That's a 5 plus hour round trip he's doing for a friend, we'll be forever indebted. Then Botond is headed back home to pick up Shawn (Elcid86) & his daughter from the train station this afternoon to chauffeur them to get the ZHP sedan Shawn is buying today. Next, BP is headed my way to deliver the seats and to grab a style 71 wheel I picked up for him. Believe BP is trying to do all of this today (young guys have driving stamina), like I mean even coming to DC this evening to deliver the seats, we'll have the guest room ready for him. (Yesterday)
Bruce secured my hood sensor switch because it was pretty loose from the modifications that had to be made when the BMW Performance Strut Bar was installed. Now it's nice and firm and won't fall out constantly like it did before.

Also, resealed my Gruppe M intake because the original seal was deteriorating, using some door trim plastics that can be obtained from Advance Auto (thanks again, Bruce!). It looks much better now and and is much more resilient now as well. Did y'all know that the Gruppe M intakes all seem to have the same serial #? There was another ZHP there that had the same intake and has the same serial # as mine, despite that one being carbon fiber and mine being Kevlar. Charlie's is also the same serial #.... what gives???

Picked up the spare Style 71 wheel Bruce had for me; this thing is nearly mint. The odds of finding just one is astronomical since the very very few sets that you see for sale are only in sets of 4. That was pure luck right there...

Installed the 65W H7 bulbs for my low-beams.

Didn't take pictures, but they straight throw from the headlights are exactly like my Xenon from the Z4M. They don't throw as wide...but that is halogen for you.

Very impressed.

Damn Stuart. My back was hurting from bending over the car for four hours, but it looks like you just assembled the whole car in a weekend.

It's all about knowing what you're doing, which Stu at this point definitely knows.

I could probably take a rolling chassis /02 and drive it down the road with close enough adjustments in about 2 hours, but I know that chassis and drivetrain like the back of my hand. Dialed in is another story...

Not today but tomorrow, gonna tackle my front wheel bearings/hubs in the Brake Wobble Saga. And if that doesn't fix it, well...hoping my suspension overhaul does. But they need to be done anyway - spinning them they definitely sound dry and worn out. Rear wheel bearings def need to be done as well: rear left bearing makes a low drone at speed.

Next weekend thinking of doing the cam position sensors - found a 32mm wrench for $4 at the flea market to take off the VANOS solenoid. btw - if you need random large/specialty tools, seriously, that is the place to go and look. People are practically giving stuff away. I even got an orbital buffer for $10.

Maybe I should get a new license plate, Wobblie

Then we can have Wobbie and Wobblie
