A little something I've had in mind for a while. Oh, and please don't judge my ash try cover... That's a gift from the previous owner, will be replaced soon.
What an awful ash tray cover! :-P

The E39's system is actually atrocious. The E46's system is "livable", at best.

I can resist usable mods, despite being furloughed. New tires and tps went on Monday. $$ Ordered the parts to retrofit oem foglights today. Got a great deal on quality parts from a guy who decided to do a track build. The plan is to put in an hid kit. Since most of my dusk/night driving is in downtown ATL, I should be able to just use the fogs and save on wear and tear on my pop up lights. (also will save gas mileage) Not to mention ga's lights on when raining law. They are projectors so they provide great output and a clear cut off line. Here is a pic of foglights only.

I know, right? Hopefully mine will turn out that well. I sent the guy a PM to see what wattage he's using. I think it's a 35w kit too. I had been debating fogs for a while and then stumbled across some output pictures. It's no trifecta mod, but it will make a substantial improvement to the poor stock headlights.
As far as the bmw projector fogs go, I've never really seen a comparison to the stock fogs. But, it would be interesting to find out.

Have you thought about vinyl wrap? My plan with my old shadow trim in the M3 was to wrap it in Dinoc. The stuff is pretty easy to use. Heat is definitely the key though.

Although, I have to admit, and please don't take this the wrong way... Those blue lug nuts, I think they look kind of ricey. I remember seeing them at the Mafia reunion and for some reason, that light anodized blue color just never sat right with me (on any car). I am sure they're some sort of high end baller lug nuts (please do tell if they are!), but to me they look out of place... If it were me, I'd go with black, as I'm all about subtlety... engine completely torn down; block, pistons, crank and head at machine shop for cleaning and inspecting.
my engine had the ALL TOO COMMON loose oil pump nut and the key aligning on the crank that aligns the timing chains gearing was sheared
beyond that (both minor because I luckily kept digging while taking apart the engine and found them) the only other issue is some oil blow-by on cyl 5 - so new rings, run a new hone on all cyl, bearings look great - but I am replacing with new (CYA)
I am thankful my custom block, pistons, rods and the heavily modified head (porting, polishing, larger valves, titanium springs, etc) all seem to be ok - will know for sure after machine shop inspects and tests
replacing all seals, gaskets, and any hardware considered "torque to yield" while everything is apart...would hate to put it all back and have oil filter housing or real main seal, etc leak
replacing injectors, the main engine harness, and going back to an OEM clutch (should be interesting - but tired of the "on/off" action of the racing clutch)

Jon, I will start by saying thanks for the complements on my ///M over my best friend's ///M. One thing to note is that my ///M has over 156k on the odometer whereas his has less than 60k... I find it amazing just how many complements I get on my ///M and the looks on people's faces when they learn that my ///M has the high mileage it has... a true testiment to the owner if you ask me....It does take a lot more effort and money to maintain any car to the level I have my ///M at...and I keep pouring more $$$ into it not because I have to but because I love this car!
As for the blue lug nuts I'm currently rocking...they are Mackin SR48 Open End Racing Lug Nuts. At first I didn't really want to get them as I was looking to get the Kics R-40 Neo-Chrome lug nuts, but the ones I wanted were out of stock so I settled on these for now.

So clearly, this is "congenital" problem with M54s. Is it all mileage dependent? Say,"likely to occur after 100k" or something along these lines?
This problem existed on the e36 models and the e46 models. However on the zhp m54, iirc there is a different lock nut and loctite that was applied from the factory to prevent the nut from backing off at higher rpms.

The only real solution to the oil pump nut problem as far as I know is welding it.

I think it's funny how on their site they say their upgraded oil pump is the only solution to this problem. I disagree. The only common issue here is the nut backing off; this can be fixed with a quick tack weld. I don't see a need to spend all that money on that oil pump. Am I wrong on this? I don't hear about the shaft shearing off often enough, though the nut is a commonly discussed item. I would certainly be interested in finding out if this is the case or not, because if there are other factors at play, then I want to make sure I'm fully protected, especially since I track this car often.
Lanister
10-10-2013, 03:28 PM
It seems like their main justification for oil pump "upgrade" is the fact that the shaft sheers. Otherwise, the weld is the solution.

I've been aware with this problem for a long time, and is part of my apprehension to make the jump to the ZHP because the 3.0 engines are more prone to this failure. The biggest cause is the crank dampener not being able to subdue the vibrations that occur above 6000rpm. There is an upgrade from ATI right in the heart of Baltimore, MD, that covers the frequencies at those engine speeds...it's also something north of $600 last I checked.
Essentially the vibrations will combine with the frequencies experienced above 6000rpm to back the OPN off the sprocket or shear it completely off the Oil Pump assembly.
There was a ridiculously over engineered solution from a member over on e46f.com, can't recall anything other than his name was Gary. He would take the core and add an additional three mounting points. overkill for most street applications, but hard abused engines or tracked cars that see sustained periods of 6000+rpm are ripe for failure.
Three steps to alleviate the issue are:
Upgrade to an S54 timing chain tensioner
Replace the Crankshaft Dampener with new OEM or upgraded ATI unit
Check and replace/repair/upgrade OPN
Let me know if anyone needs links or further information.

The E39's system is actually atrocious. The E46's system is "livable", at best.
Agreed. Always found my dad's old 530/5 a bit tricky because of the gas pedal. The M5 isn't as bad, but still pretty bad. Sport button, God no..
The old ZHP my family had wasn't too bad but ultimately I like the good ol' cable. I can't wait to change mine. Soon.

Bp, there are those in the racing world that have tried the weld and the safety wiring - eventually the design breaks.

I don't think so. I think all 4 should be changed around 100k miles.
Sent from my S4 > Mason, OH now Free ('http://tapatalk.com/m?id=10')
Those sensors are $$$$$ I was shocked when I decided to replace all four in my ZHP....since I was feeling quite lazy replacing them, I let the dealer do this and was charged $225/sensor not to mention having to pay for labor....it was a very expensive bill for sure....but at least my ZHP is good to go for another 100k miles...:thumbsup
I'm sure you can find Bosh sensors for as little as $150 or so depending on where you go....
On another note, my ZHP is in the shop today waiting for a tire replacement. What makes this bad for me is that I just replaced my rear set and I got a stupid nail on my driver's rear tire! Can't patch the hole as it's on the outer edge of the tire....talking about sucky luck.... so I am waiting to buy another PSS just to replace the punctured tire....sucks.... In the mean time....I get to drive a 2013 328...interesting how the engine shuts down when you're stopped...
330i ZHP

I have the S54 tensioner, I have the ATI dampener (but the engine already had about 20k miles on it before install)...so I am now adding the upgrade to the oil pump (I am now having an entire unit made to order....OEM unit modified to increase oil pressure, revised internals, etc)

Thanks! The seats are actually from a late 70s 911 as the stock "comfort" seats were uncomfortable as hell. I'll eventually buy some Recaro's but I just can't justify the cost at the moment

You could have purchased a customized base mounting bracket from various manufacturers.
Hermes
10-11-2013, 10:07 AM
I missspoke - the issue is not actually seat brackets as the holes line up, it's the way the E21 seat mounts are designed. There is a 1.5-2" vertical difference on the door side mount vs trans tunnel mount so I lean in towards the middle of the car. If you put a spacer on the tunnel side then you end up sitting far too high in the car.

There's a manufacturer in Long beach that does customization. Specialty in classic BMW seats to Recaros or vice versa. They did my M3 seats to Recaros.
Hermes
10-11-2013, 10:35 AM
Yeah, you sent me that link before but aren't yours are STi Recaro's? IIRC the E30 has flat mount points on the body so that's why it's so much easier to make adapter brackets vs E21. I'm just screwed because I own the forgotten 3er that still has leftover 2002 technology to it.
das boots
10-11-2013, 10:53 AM
They customized the mount to fit the STi Recaros. There is a small mount that is close to the door. I did not even have to bring it to them. They already have the templates for all seats related to BMWs.

I'm at 122 and some change, is there anything wrong with waiting for the CEL's to come on to replace these?

Vacuumed the Honda and cleaned the interior plastics.
Also vacuumed the ZHP and cleaned the interior plastics, then I finally used the Gummi Pflege Stift I've had on the washer for too many months to count. I started with the door seals as that is what I read it was good for. I wasn't too impressed at first, took me a few minutes to figure out how to use the bottle too, but just a few. After the doors (all 4, both seals body and door) I did the sunroof, still wasn't that impressed. Then the rear window seal, WOW! That 10 year old seal looks AMAZING now. then I started on the black body trim (rub strips), WOW again! Did the windshield seal too even though it is just a few months old, and then ended up doing the rubber around the door frames too, WOW. All of the grey'ing rubber is black again. Hoping it lasts well!
Hope there is enough to do the Honda tomorrow. I probably need to order some more as I think I'll be using it more often in the future.
Oh, and tried and tried and tried to get this epic engine failure Stu put in my head out of my head. It's not working too well. I guess I'll just hope for the best for now, until I can do something.

This week will be the first week I start driving the ZHP daily (to work). Less than half of us daily it right? I'm sure there's a topic on it somewhere here. It feels bittersweet as the route to and from work is usually congested and uninspiring, but I guess I'll be getting the most of out it.

Getting the 25% tint pulled off. $100 out the door. Next step in getting the car inspected is passing emissions.
Taking the 44s off the 328i and swapping them onto the ZHP.
Need to install a working foglight in place of the empty hole where the broken one used to be. And finally... I need to replace FCABS.

Yeah, unfortunately buying new tires is not all of it. Since that is something I'll have to do next season, I have to put on my winter wheels a few weeks early this year, and I wasn't prepared for it yet because I need spacers to clear the front brakes. If I buy spacers, then I can't just buy fronts, I have to get front and rear otherwise it won't look right. This is adding up $$ really quickly!
I did get the alignment done though, so at least I won't chew up my winter tires this season.
P.S. - you always were a Starbucks whore, Joop. :biggrin

Sounds awesome! I've been watching Ebay for one but no luck so far. I'm curious if you had to use an LCM for a coupe or just one with the 4.0 sw? If it's not from a coupe do your adaptive (swiveling L to R) headlights still work? I'm beginning to think it might just be easier to order the correct 61319133029 LCM. They can be found for a little under $300.

That's good to know! I was going by Realoem, they show an LCM for rain sensor + xenon cars and a different one for rain sensor + xenon + adaptive headlights cars. Both are the same price though, I'd have to think if there were some added circuitry for adaptive lights there would be a higher price on it.

All the coupes/verts here that have Xenon and are facelifted have the adaptive functionality. Other parts of the world may have had adaptive functionality as optional, which might explain why there are different part #'s.

Kits have unpredictable drops, sometimes. I've seen people install kits and only get half an inch of drop. Others, it raised the car. A lot of factors involved, so I would recommend coils so you could adjust.

Hmm yeah, I have a similar experience with my former DSM, the drop was there but it was uneven.

^Both the HR cupkits will drop the ZHP.
And the Eibach/bilstein cup kit will also drop the ZHP a little bit.

H&R Sport (supposedly lower than Touring) only dropped my ZHP Sedan 1/2". Your results may vary.

Sometimes I wish I had done more research and went with other springs or coils, but then again, for a daily driver on harsh Memphis roads, the sport cup kit did the trick for me.

I can't imagine the Touring would do much 1/4"?

I did add the re-inforcement plates to the car, which would account for a slight raise in the front (installed under the towers) but not the rear (installed on top).

H&R Cup with the Race springs. That's the ticket. No gap at all. :thumbsup

Yep, about 1/4 inch. Not worth it to me. But, if you want a stiffer ride and like the stock ZHP ride height, then touring cup is the one for you. The Sport kit will erase fender to wheel gap just as BP mentioned

I have the touring cup kit installed. It's definitely more than 1/4 of an inch drop. It is supposed to be .75inches front and .25inches rear drop. It's probably more like 1 inch front and .75 rear for me. No idea why its lower but I definitely like it.

Looks great Washburn.............and SO much easier to clean! Barry
Thanks!
- and I've always wanted a simple star style 5-spoke wheel for the ZHP, and the easiness in cleaning them - (probably about 10x easier when I think of how i labored to get the ZHP wheels clean) is an added bonus for sure. Really need to get some better pics with the DSLR, but it rained today a lot, and the car is dirty again :(

Shawn, thanks for your assist today, truly appreciate it. Jack up to jack down in about an hour & 20 minutes including a distraction when dish washing liquid dripped into my eye and had to flush it. I think the stealership charges 3 hours for this repair, its fairly straightforward, give it a try. The steering & drive are now tighter, these FCABs showed no visible problems but once we got them out you could feel the looseness in them.

"Probably more like..." sounds like you didn't really measure before and after, just guessed. I measured before and after, or perhaps something changed from 2003 to 2005? Or from 2012 to 2013 with H&R?
I read somewhere (I think in H&R's instructions) to take something to make a level plane through the center of your center cap and then measure up to the body metal (not from the floor so that if your tire pressure changed for some reason it wouldn't look like you dropped more or less).
Before installation...
DF - 13.5"
PF - 13.5"
DR - 13.0"
PR - 13.0"
...and a few weeks after installation, 06/21/2013...
DF - 13.0"
PF - 13.0"
DR - 12.5"
PR - 12.5"
I just went out to re-measure these figures (10/20/13) and got different numbers, lol,
DF - 13.0"
PF - 13.0"
DR - 12.75"
PR - 13.0"
Confirms my suspicion that the drivers rear was slightly lower than the passenger rear. Great, something else that needs attention. Could you do the same when you get a chance and post your results? We have different wheels/tires, but your pics look like our fronts are about the same, but your rear looks lower, anything heavy in the trunk? lol

Yesterday I went square! Gary needed an 8.5" wheel, so we met up at a Discount Tire and had them swap our tires around. I now have four 18x8" wheels on the ZHP with my old 225 & 255 tires (I'll be going with a set of 245/35ZR18 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3 in a few months). But more importantly, Gary is no longer driving on three 8.5"s and one 8"!
