Been MIA lately, busy with work, school, flipping a condo, working on my own house and helping my future mother in-law overhaul her laundry room/closet.
--Windshield washer fluid tank started leaking again. I just replaced that seal between the pump and the tank a few months back; awesomeness.
https://scontent-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/598552_10200641399905048_571909114_n.jpg
--Front drivers door handle (exterior) was making an odd noise, tried some lube, seemed to help a little; hope it doesn't pull off in my hand one day.
--Nearly a $1000 worth of front suspension components are still in the trunk (CA's, FCAB's, Tie-rod ends, etc); maybe one day.
--Nearly ran out of fuel the other day (yes, I know this is bad on my fuel pump).

--Close to 122,000 miles!

Well, just completed a little maintenance. My drivers front window regulator was starting to die, so I swapped it with a new one. I also completed the zip tie mod at the same time, very nice writeup by David. Overall, took me about an hour and a half, and that was while watching ALMS, and Gmail chatting with a coworker... So, overall, not bad at all.
Will do the others when time and money permits. :) For now, I'm happy that I can once again visit Starbucks drive thru, I was going through withdrawal! :biggrin

Yesterday I received a pair of carbon fiber splitters and a very nice Coby Wheel tri-stitch steering wheel. Unfortunately they will have to wait to be installed as we're in the process of moving. More garage space for the ZHP though!

Met up with a friend who helped me hardwire my new V1. No pics of the install, but I did take this just for the heck of it:
http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a107/mbcoops/null_zps10162f49.jpg
Compared to the escort passports I've had for about 15 years, the v1 is extremely "chatty." That said, it is supposed to have much better range, so we will see.

I have heard that about the V1 as well. Apparently it's bad in my area so it looks like I am going to look into the redline or 9500xi since my old 8500 is officially dead.

Successfully completed the steering wheel swap with Crickett (Travis). I was looking for a leather wheel and he was looking for an Alcantara. All took 6 days total and now we're both enjoying a nice change.

A bit bummed at myself for failing to firmly reconnect the wire clips to the airbag. After an hour's driving, the airbag light came on. Took out the airbag and, sure enough, both clips were lose. :facepalm I guess it needed it to happen so I can buck-up for a BMW Scanner 1.4.0. so I can deal with codes and such. :santa2

Not that BMW Scanner would be a bad purchase, but a cheap VAG OBDII USB cable from eBay & the DIS software can clear airbag codes, too (I've had to use it a few times).

For some unfathomable reason I used my phone to take a picture of the donut spare mounted but not the failed tire. But now rocking new SuperSports on all 4 wheels and really worn Conti ExtremeDWs on the lightweight wheels. I carry a deep 17mm socket and 1/2" ratchet in the spare well just for this kind of situation.
10586
Shredded one of the old rear tires. NOt sure how--it shredded on the inner sidewall and started making funny noises on the freeway. Didn't feel like a blown tire but I pulled off and found tire was shredded and rubbing inner fender and rear shock. Put on donut spare, which looked silly and drove 50mph on freeway, pissing off other drivers. After work put on track wheels and dropped rear 135s at Costco for Pilot Super Sports.

Well guys, I apologize for such a late update, but I am happy to say, the TPMS retrofit with the reset button is finally complete. I had to wait for some parts at the dealer, and while waiting, I got busy doing stuff at home with the family... And then my wife's girlfriend called with a plumbing catastrophe... Anyway, a couple hours this morning, and a couple hours this evening, and it was all done... Keep in mind, this was while having my 1 yr old daughter in the passenger seat, playing with stuff... Your time may be a lot less! :biggrin

Agreed, but hard to do when you're in the middle of a long drive, unless you pull over every few miles. I agree, checking on occasion and keeping an eye every time you get in/out of the car is best, but a pressure gauge won't do crap in the middle of a drive...

I have to respectfully disagree homie. I once hit a small piece of rebar sticking up from a poorly maintained highway bridge joint and it punctured both tires on one side. I barely noticed anything on the steering wheel until I went around a curve and the car swayed too much. The lower the aspect ratio on the tire, the less chance of someone feeling a low pressure situation.
Either way, TPMS means more buttons in the car, and buttons are awesome.

+1 !! Everyone take note of this. I have an aspect ratio of 50 on my wagon, got a flat in the rear once. Didn't notice a thing until I went around a corner... The fronts will of course be easier to feel through the wheel, but I the rear (especially on 18s) will be that much more difficult to realize while you are driving.

@az3579, The TPMS I had in my previous vehicle (Nissan Titan) was CRAP. I am hoping that this TPMS system (which doesn't use sensors in the wheels like most cars, uses information collected from the DSC which compares wheel rotations from side to side and front to back) will work much better and have less errors.
Someone please correct me if I have that wrong about how it senses you have a low tire.
The TPMS system on our Honda CRV has been nearly flawless (uses sensors). Thought one of the sensors batteries was going dead early this year, but then the problem went away. Car is 5 years old, supposedly the batteries only last ~5 years.

Logic would dictate that it's less accurate on a car that doesn't have the individual wheel sensors, like our cars.
Jon,
Personally, I can't fathom not feeling a flat. I feel the slightest variations in tire pressure on my car just from driving it. Maybe it's just the autocross experience talking, who knows.
I guess I'll leave this pet peeve of mine (alongside "you NEED AWD in the northeast") here and leave it at "agree to disagree".
Perhaps I'm old school, and am right up there with "don't need traction control, don't need ABS, don't need........". :dunno

Well, kind of a funny story, but this is what I did with my ZHP today...
So, as some of you know, I completed the TPMS retrofit (DIY coming tonight) and I wanted to test it out. So, about a mile from my local dealer, I let air out of my right rear tire, down to 20 pounds. I started driving and within about a half mile, the low tire pressure light popped up! Perfect I thought! I continued to my dealer and pulled up to the service lane so that I could have them top it up (I have the nitrogen package and get free service for a year). Ugh. Some box was flying around the freeway and unfortunately my car was one of the cara unable to avoid it. Scraped up the lower part of the front bumper pretty bad. It is mostly on the bottom where no one will notice...but I'll know. So a front bumper respray is probably in my future.
Also, I noticed it scrapped off a bit of that chalky black stuff on the underside of the car. Should I be worried about that?
It was mostly a good day though. Went up to wine country and filled the trunk up with wine and clothes.

Unfortunately, I somehow caught a nail in the front left tire this weekend. Fitted 2 new Bridgestone s04s up front this morning. Kind of a bummer at the time, but I don't mind the fresh rubber. Now I have an excuse to turn off the DSC and wear down the Michelins on the rear:drevil

That looks pure amazing Mike. How much would something like that be?
Also I had a question from a friend. He is getting a new 4 series and would like a blue stitching in the seats. I know that is a lot of work but he is looking to get an estimate and time frame of how long something like that would be.

:dunno
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 4
Less accurate (or a higher threshold of error) wouldn't bother me. The system I had in my Nissan I mentioned would go off too early IMO. The slightest drop in temperature would drive me crazy, light would come on nearly every day in the fall and I would instantly think I had a flat, pull over to check everything out and would only be off by 1 pound or 2. Those tires were filled with nitrogen.
As for feeling a flat, I can attest that it can be difficult (at least for me on my car with aftermarket wheels and tires, 19" Michelin Pilot Super Sports). Last year about this time I apparently picked up a nail at some point, the car slowly lost its air pressure in the passenger side rear and one day on my way to class, the tire blew. I didn't realize it was blown until I put the spare on.
Agree to disagree works, its also great to get different perspectives from others with different experiences, thanks for sharing yours!
Did some Dr. Colorchip this weekend. I am going to give it a second round soon after. I've got pics on my phone I can post when I get home from work.
What Dr. Colorchip does:
- Fills in chips so that they're the same color as the rest of the car
- Is extraordinarily forgiving for if you put paint on unintended places
- Makes touching up incredibly easy - smear, dry, rub with the solution
What Dr. Colorchip does not do:
- Makes chips flush with the rest of the paint
- Fills them in as if the chip never happened
- Replaces a proper respray
The chip is still there, but it's now the same color as the rest of the car and slightly filled in, making it much less noticeable unless you get up close. Videos online make it look like it disappears because the camera's resolution doesn't pick it up.
You may find some small areas that you missed and left paint on, so don't worry. You can come back the next day with rubbing compound and get the rest off without a problem. Just don't let it sit for too long. Take a flashlight and go over the paint to find them.
I'd love to respray my sandblasted front bumper, but I don't know if I want to spend that kind of money doing so. I've heard people say it's anywhere from $750-1000.

That's impressive for the first time! The first time I did mine, I was 20, and was completely unprepared. It took me probably 18 hours over the span of two days to do it. To make it more difficult, it was in November, and without a garage. It was very tedious. But the stalling and idle hunting problem was solved.

What are the symptoms? hard braking, vibration only in brake pedal, only in steering wheel, pull to the left, or right?
could be pad deposits, could be a weird alignment issue, could be warped (new) rotors, i've seen guys get a little overzealous with the impact gun and over tighten lugs to the point that they warp rotors.

Symptoms are pulsating and vibration in steering wheel and brake pedals, and "lurching" brake performance. As if it grabs more in one location than the other when I stop, so it "lurches" so to speak - kinda like... fast-slow-fast-slow-fast-slow really quickly. It doesn't pull to one side or the other. Braking performance is great. The symptoms are identical to before I replaced my rotors, but less pronounced than before.
I installed the rotors myself about 3 weeks ago to the books. Zimmermann and Textar combo. Torqued down wheels to spec.
If my wheels are straight, and if my rotors/pads are new, and I just got an alignment about 8 months ago, what else could it be suspension-wise? FCABs are fairly new.

Did you clean everything when you installed it with brake cleaner? most rotors ship with an oil on them these days to keep them from rusting, you have to clean that off prior to installation.
if not you may want to try a bedding in procedure to see if that helps (not familiar with your pads, may or may not be required)

Well, how foolish did I feel when I found out that service was closed on Sunday! DOH! :facepalm So, off to the gas station to top it up. Of course, they don't hand out tokens anymore, now they charge $1 for air. Of course, now my tire has a mix of air and pure nitrogen, so I have to go BACK to the dealer to get the tire evacuated and filled with pure nitrogen...
The good news, my TPMS retrofit functions completely, and the reset button also works flawlessly. :)
Took the car to the dealer today to get the tire evacuated and refilled with nitrogen. :thumbsup I found it kind of funny to see the tech giving my ZHP that lustful look-back as he parked it in the service lane for me and walked back to the shop. :rofl Everyone needs a little ZHP in their life. :roundel

They came with Coat Z and did not have the oil on them as a result. but I cleaned them off with brake cleaner to be sure.

I did not bed the pads this time because last time I did bed my pads, and assumed that was the cause of my vibrations. I don't have pics now but all four rotors are perfectly clean and making proper contact with the brake pads. No deposits that I can see.
There must be some underlying issue. My next thoughts have to be the wheel bearing and something with suspension.
Is it possible to have a bent or bad hub? Or could a bad wheel bearing cause wobble? My front wheel bearings don't make noise when driving, but they seem a little loose when spinning them.

So you don't have a DISA valve and your intake feed/boot set up is different/unique, the P0340 for me was too much air, read as a lean condition. On a stock set up I replaced the intake boots & DISA gasket, that cured it. For you, where could additional air be getting in? Is an intake gasket drying out and leaking or a mating surface loosened up or what? Do you have a smoker for the smoke test?

Took a while for that part of the memory to come back. Cleaned/replaced TB/ICV on one car, got lean codes, messed around with boots to lose lean code but picked up 340 & others. Tried everything everyone suggested, still P0340. Justin final came up with an idea -- unplug, clean, & reconnect every harness connection down in that area. And while I was doing this, found one connection wasn't fully seated, I must have dislodged it doing the TB/ICV work. Cleaned & reconnected that one connector and all codes disappeared. I hope you find a simple fix like that.

Nationwide Smartride. Other insurance companies have something similar as well.
http://www.nationwide.com/smartride.jsp
Basically, it's a small device plugged into the OBD2 port that monitors different aspects of your car - particularly, acceleration, braking, and time of day (no GPS information). 30 minutes after you drive, it sends this information over to Nationwide. It's a bit big-brothery, but I don't really mind.
If you have a small number of hard acceleration/braking events, then you're considered to be a safe driver. The less events you have, the better you appear to Nationwide, which will equate to up to a 30% discount. Right now I'm looking at a ~20% discount, plus the 5% they gave me for signing up. I'll get my final discount by December.
Your insurance can never increase with it, so you could also use it as a nice monitoring tool for yourself, plus get a 5% discount. You only need it for 6 months, which means keeping the foot off the throttle for half a year :p
It uploads stats on your driving onto the Smartride website. I'm more annoyed at the fact that he floored it more in a day than I did when I got the device. I'm trying to get a discount here :(
There are other devices you can buy that do the same thing...but you pay quite the premium for them, and they include GPS tracking. Also a monthly fee with this since it uses the cell network to transfer data.

I'd be pissed if I was trying to get a discount and that mofo did what he did. I'd bitch to not only the guy, but also would tell the insurance company what he did. I doubt there's anything they could do about it, but if there's any way to redeem your "points" or whatever then it's worth a shot.
Yeah, I called and asked and they said they cant remove any data but not to worry about it since it is just one day.
I also should have unplugged it, but I also didn't think he was gonna take it for a drive. I'll remember next time I bring my car to a shop, but I only have it for a few more months so chances are I won't need to.
To be fair, he didn't charge me for any diagnoses he did, and he even removed the tires and checked the wheels twice on a balance machine, so I let it slide. He was also extremely nice, and called his boss to get the name of the best alignment shop in town for after I do suspension work.
If he had charged me money I would've asked him if he enjoyed driving my car

As someone that used to work at a tire shop and frequently mount and balance tires/wheels (which often included test drives) when I was in college, I can ensure that there is ZERO reason for him to go anywhere North of the 75mph line, and even that is pushing the limit...
I would have that graph in the shop manager's face and I would light them the F**K up... That is COMPLETE bullshit. What if he caused an accident at that speed? Let alone ruined your car, he could've killed someone in YOUR car... You don't want that headache...
I'm sorry for that trouble man, but that should NOT be left unmentioned.

Yeah, I'd still mention it to them. And, don't unplug it the next time you get work done. Tell them it's there, so they have to be careful if they drive it.
He did tell me over the phone that he took it on the highway up to 75 to try and see if he could recreate the vibration, so that part I am unconcerned about. I'm annoyed at how much he floored it.

Replaced my lower intake hose. You guys were right. It was a bitch! I ended up removing a lot of stuff to get at it....On the plus side, the car runs great! Pulls harder and other than a bit of the 4k loss, the powerband is back to being buttery smooth. It was worth the work tremendously.

Check the temperature sensor. I think there is a small rubber gasket that is known to leak when it is worn. Maybe the sensor isn't in all the way?

Daniel, going to look sweet behind your BMW Performance Wheels! :thumbsup
There's only one thing left that I can think of that'll cause my wheels to wobble, and that's my hub/bearing assembly. There's nothing else connected to it - that is, unless the steering knuckle itself is somehow bent, but that's incredibly unlikely as the car has never been in an accident.
Further speculation comes from this post:

1997. One of the first cars to have them standard. I have the second generation of Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar EMTs (runflat) on my car as the wheels are from a 2008 c6. Noisy, harsh ride, and low grip. (at least in comparison to standard high performance summer tires) But they are rated for 200 miles at 0psi. Most other runflats are only 50 miles or so.

Peak output is 505 hp (377 kW) at 6300 rpm and 470 lb·ft (640 N·m) at 4800 rpm with a 7100 rpm redline[citation needed] During GM's reliability testing of this engine in its prototype phase, the LS7 was remarked to have been repeatedly tested to be 8000 rpm capable, although power was not recorded at that rpm level, due to the constraints of the camshaft's hydraulic lifters and the intake manifold ability to flow required air at that engine speed.
I love my BMW, but if there is one American cars can do, it's make ridiculous power. IMO, they put so many other car companies to shame in that category.

Long term - if I have mechanically hurt the motor I will assess (right now it is a misfire on cyl2) I am still in the HOPING stage that it is just electrical
but I have promised myself for a long time to go V8 in whatever the next project is
So, if mechanical problem - I will buy a used M54B30 and put the car back together as stage 2+....and start collecting the knowledge needed about LS wiring, the parts, the eng and trans....and go to town...but the V8 has gone from "do it now" to maybe do it in the future (all just this evening)

I want the V8 staccato - the V8 in my truck sounds weird due to the cross-firing design...sounds like a 8cyl version of a viper v10
The design means it doesn't have the typical firing order - so that the engine is always supplying flow to both turbos...instead of pulses of power that a typical v8 would provide....it allows for instant boost and more linear power

10-04-2013, 08:09 PM
Agreed, but I think certain powerplants are still worth spending the money on. I would love to have something like a S70/2, from my searching it looks to be possible. It won't be anywhere near as cheap as the output you get from a LSx engine, but in certain cars I see the need to build the right engine.
For example...
My buddy and I each have an early 2002. I want to go fully crazy with cams/pistons/carbs and get 170hp. He wants to swap a 200hp VW TDi motor in his. I agree his is cheaper and more fun, but in certain cars I like the fact it's kinda original.
Still would love to see a V8 in your touring if that's the route you're on!

JP,
On stuck wheels, apply some anti-seize to the mating surfaces on the backside of the wheel, and right at the barrel on the hub. Need to do this about every 3rd you R&R the wheels and no sticking issues.

Changed the o2 sensors in a friends e39 525i. I actually found it much easier to access the hot side of the engine with the easily removable cabin air filter. Dimitri's e39 was showing both bank o2 sensor failure and both bank SAP sensor. Also a thermostat stuck open failure and a umgebungs temperature sensor failure. He has to pass emissions on the 11th, so we put my 328i used sensors in. Hopefully they will hold out for a few months til we can overhaul his VANOS stop up his oil leaks.

Slow progress on disassembly of the engine currently in the 02. Decided to take the 2.0 bottom out and put it in the E21 (late 320 was really a 318). I'm thinking I should be around 110-115hp with the additional displacement and a rebuilt bottom end.

Did what I guess is something of a standard trio last week- o2 sensor, oil level sensor and disa. At least they all went together for efficiency. Early if you just look at miles (just turned 60k), but after 10 yrs I'm not complaining. It's easy to take care of such a great car - and now I'd say it's 9.5/10 inside, out- and under the hood :).

Yesterday I installed a Gruppe M intake. Little did I know what that would do to me...
I couldn't stop grinning for a good 10 minutes after I did a test drive of it. It's been a long time since I had a mod do that to me.
This was made possible by none other than Charlie himself! :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup :thumbup
That gruppe intake really is awesome! I loved mine when I had it!

I replaced my side mirror glass with aspherical versions from dubstopimports on Ebay. I love them!
Homelink is on the way, looking forward to that, too.

Had one of my mirrors warranty by them. Great product otherwise and customer service was top notch.

The after cat ones. Was getting a check engine light, but no other noticeable symptoms.

Hey Dane,
Was it you that said it's usually the post-cat sensors that go and cause a CEL?
I've been incredibly fortunate; I have 168k on all original sensors, but am wondering which ones are the ones to do if a CEL pops up.

I don't think so. I think all 4 should be changed around 100k miles.

Put in the new Climate Control unit, the newer style one, to hopefully fix my crazy A/C issues. I think I may have fixed it! It's acting different and in a good way. The old one was DIRTY in the fans!

Installed new key FOB emblem, new oem center console, and new oem cupholders. I mainly use the cupholder to hold my iPhone, and a pack of gum or altoids.
Still have the armrest, I like to use it every now and again. Although, most times it is annoying.
Also received new throttle cable. Plan to install soon-ish

Drove her to school.
Ran off with the better half to NOLA for a quick weekend getaway trip this past weekend, got home yesterday. Took a rental car, ugh, Chevrolet Impala (I have no idea what year), so glad to be back in the ZHP!

Those are rubber pads that lay inside the trays, yours might be missing. I am fairly certain these have separate part numbers too, so you should be able to order separately...

A little something I've had in mind for a while. Oh, and please don't judge my ash try cover... That's a gift from the previous owner, will be replaced soon.
