it would require modifications so I probably won't do it. A Bavaria badge is worth $$$ so I'll probably just hold onto it next to all my old hood roundels and a piston from my E24

as for the crookedness, it's made of aluminum so it's kinda bent from me pulling it off the old car

car was a dual zenith 4MT 5/71 build

Daytime temperature has began to climb back to the LoCal winter weather of low 70's. Cold chill has gone bye-bye to somewhere east.

I finally installed the new Interstate battery. There is something that I think is missing. I removed the old OE battery and there is a 90 deg fitting for venting. But I do not see any hose on where the venting should vent out. On the rest of my older Bimmers, the hose vents out. But I did transfer the fitting to the new battery. Any inputs would be appreciated.

I also removed, cleaned, removed rusts and repainted the battery tray. And also removed rusts and repainted the holding bin.

Picked mine up from the body shop today. I spotted a few things that they missed and they will be correcting them this Friday. Once I have it back in its complete form, I'll post pics. Then, on Saturday, I'll be changing the throttle body, resetting the fuel system adapts, and changing the oil. Then, assuming it will be running properly, I'll be happy.

I started with my lights yesterday. Got my headlights installed into the ZHP as well as the clear corners and sidemarkers. Today I will swap in the black trim (didn't expect the silver to sell so fast!) and also get my RCR tails back on the car.

Oh, and I ordered rubber... New wheel pics coming sometime this weekend. I WILL see the new wheels on the car before I leave again. :biggrin

So how difficult or easy was the handbrake handle install? You just pulled on the old one 'till it came off?

Yep. I was surprised actually, I gave it a slight twist, but remembered the spline on the bottom and didn't want to tear it up. So I just pulled. I had to push on the button to assist the initial movement, but then it came no problem. Quite easy actually...

Well, not sure... JP and I were chatting and he has an E90 setup. Apparently his e-brake handle has a notch down the inside bottom. Mine had a raised edge (mine is listed as an E82 unit). Take a look at yours (or post/text me a pic). If it has the raised spline. Then yes, it will slide on (very difficult) and stay there, extremely securely. :)

Don't know what kind of spline it has. It's the handle from the Boss' former 335i. I'll have to check when I get home. How is the E82 one different from the E9x one?

Hey y'all... does anyone happen to know the specific idle speed of our cars?

Hermes
01-19-2013, 01:38 PM
should be in the 700 range, do you want to know the exact number?

edit: I assume yours idles low (more like 5-600) like mine at the moment, you need to replace your CCV/oil separator system

should also clean ICV and check your DISA

I installed Bimmerworld motor mounts (Gruppe N replicas). And the car resonates at idle. Otherwise they are great! That's why I was asking about idle speed...

But yeah if possible- I'm wondering what it *should be* number wise.

I've done one CCV and don't think this one is bad- but I'll replace it in the spring (as well as clean the ICV). Might have Eurocharged do a tune for me that raises the idle to 850rpm or so (I assume they can do that).

Not sure if my idle is lower than it should be...

Sprint Booster ///M Sport button mod complete & installed! I'm 90% happy with my handiwork: I chose to use the Sport button's green LED rather than the SB's so it'd match the other green indicators, but I think I damaged the LED during removal as it's not as bright as it should be. Otherwise, I love it!

And now I'm working in NCS Expert to try to get the RPA flat-tire monitoring system activated so I have a fully functional button row . . .

That's right!

I would detail it this weekend, but I would like to give the front end a full wetsand (too bad I'm out of 2k grit sand paper).. So I will need to order some, then I'll spend a good two days buffing it back to perfection. The paint is actually kind of dull in person, it lacks clarity, and is swirled like no other.. :(

I did detail the interior, used some Leather Masters and it came out like new! (The interior was already in fine shape when the car arrived :shifty )

I always thought M cars use Castrol 10w-60, this car car has sticker that says to use Castrol 5w-30.. Can anybody chime in here? Shouldn't this run on 10w-60 like it's S54 relative? Or is it okay with regular old 5w-30 BMW oil?

I'll do some research, just was wondering if somebody knew

terraphantm

That is controversial. Officially pre march-2000 M5s take 10w-60 and the newer ones take 5w-30. The only difference is that BMW changed the piston rings in the newer years.

Based on some investigation, it seems the 5w-30 was mostly a marketing decision and that the engineers feel 10w-60 is proper. Personally I would take the middle ground. 10w-60 in warmer months and LL-01 in winter months.

I personally do run 10w-60 year round in the M3, but it does not reach the same oil temps in the winter. I feel like the oil isn't reaching the ideal viscosity and that could be contributing to the rod bearing wear seen on some M3s and M5s.

That said if you drive the car *hard*, then 10w-60 is appropriate year round.

Airbag light went off again. Think I need to replace to driver seat belt buckle assembly. Or is there anyway to fix the current one?

I've done this about five times with my e36 in 250,000 miles. Think that the buckle latch must get some wear and trips the airbag light. Don't know of a fix other then replacement because of the gunpowder charge in it to tighten the belt in the event of a crash. I presume the e46 uses a similar setup.

Well, I leave to go back to the ship (for real this time) tomorrow... So today, the ZHP got a wash, the first time I've washed it actually... I got her all clean and tucked into the garage to sleep for the next couple of months. I also removed the steering wheel so that I can ship it off in trade for an alcantara one. Once that wheel is received, I will be making my order with Coby... :biggrin

JP, I believe you are referring to the Cosmoline that was never properly removed when she was shipped across the pond. It was to prevent the salt corrosion on the trip apparently, but the baked on stuff I don't have a clue how to remove aside from scraping/media blasting. I hear ya. I had it bad on the E30 that I rebuilt, but I ended up forking over some more $$ for a custom painted valve cover and intake for the M20. Apparently they use Cosmoline in the firearm world, so perhaps they may have a solution for removal. The difficulty is that it should've been removed when the car was originally taken off the boat when she was new, but many, many of them never had the proper removal done and above is the result. :crying

JP, in doing some online searching, here is what I have found. Both of these companies I know that you probably already know. I have used both Wurth and Zymol products, though neither cleaner listed here. Nonetheless, may be wurth :shift a try.

"I've found 2 products effective at removing cosmoline from painted surfaces and engine compartments. There are other strong solvents on the market that will do the job but many will damage the cars finish. Zymol has a product called Strik which is a non-caustic, non-acidic citrus base cleaner that will remove cosmoline and grease from all surfaces. I use Zymol products on my own cars and have found them to be effective and easy to use, although a bit pricey. A bottle (8oz) of Strik retails for $19.95 and can be purchased through mail order houses for somewhat less. The second product is made by Wurth of Germany and is called "Citrus Based Solvent Degreaser". This product is similar to the Zymol Strik, although somewhat more concentrated (can be diluted with 9 parts water). A can of Wurth Degreaser retails for $19.95 but is 18oz. This product is 100% biodegradeable with no harmful vapors.
Both products are excellent but the latter is a better value and comes highly recommended by the Porsche Club concours guru, John Paterak. "

Ok - more reading - once the stuff has been heat-cycled for years, best seems to be a scouring pad, very hot water and a lot of elbow grease.

I'd try to get the actual error code read, it should say exactly what needs replacing / fixed. I've had the airbag light twice now: first was for the passenger occupancy sensor (did the "always-occupied" resistor workaround), & the second (& current) is for the "belt tensioner, driver" cable's resistance being too high. I was able to get the error to go away once by fiddling with the said cable a bit, but it came back. The cable's ~$15 from Tischer (P/N 52 10 8 255 704).

Yeah, side marker got blown out by the sun. It's exactly where the reflection from the sun is.

I don't think it'd cut it on Cosmoline though. It's worth a shot I guess.

Here's what I was thinking:

http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/detailing-101/185385-prima-cosmonot-cosmoline-remover.htmlhttp://www.northamericanmotoring.com/forums/detailing-101/185385-prima-cosmonot-cosmoline-remover.html

I went on a 2 hour trek to get a Duralast 49-DL battery.

I had to go to 3 stores! I took my battery out 3 times.

Each store said they had it in stock, but they really didn't. Frustrating. I think I drove about 50 miles today.

Upon opening my battery compartment, I found the bottom was covered in black, awful gunk all on the inside of it. I cleaned it out very well with SimpleGreen. Needless to say, I think that battery was leaking and completely shot.

Finally got the 49DL in there, it didn't clamp down in the battery compartment properly.

I found this weird little white block just hanging around in the bottom of the compartment. I placed it under the clamp and used it as sort of a spacer to press the battery in place. Worked great!

Stu

We'll hope for the best :eeps

I'm assuming that was the problem. The battery was corroded at the top and was definitely overcharged. It was rated for 630cca, and it had 830cca in it. That black gunk all over the bottom also indicated it was not happy.

I hope that solves my electrical issues.

Plus, the Duralast 49-DL looks cool ;)

Turns out the Duralast 49-DL is being discontinued, so do not go to AutoZone for this anymore. Go to Pep Boys and ask for the Bosch Group 49 battery. It's identical in CCA and whatnot. It is about $100, but frequently goes on sale for $63.

Reasons I went with the OEM BMW one were:

Not pictured (can take one if requested) is that half of the silver ring flips up so that you can remove it fairly easily. The griffin while sits flush is near impossible to remove.

Also, the OEM one has the green light that matches the interior perfectly.

Good point on the removal. I needed 2 ports anyway... But the BMW unit at $18 is definitely a good deal for an OEM accessory. ebmwparts has it for $18.25 but that's excluding shipping. In case Braman BMW pricing goes up.

What made you go with that? I've never heard of that one before

Total is a great French oil company, I just wasn't sure which would be the proper oil for our cars. These were the possible choices:

Total Quartz Energy 9000 5W40 = semi-synthetic; API Group III, hydrocracked 'dino' oil
Total Quartz Energy 9000 0W30 = full synthetic; min. API Group IV (PAO, esters, etc.)

After my research I determined that the 0-30 is the one I'm gonna run. Also, I like to run as small a variance between the two weights as possible so there is as little detergent/additives in my oil possible.

Also, if you decide to do this like I did make sure you buy the one badged ENERGY. There is a Quartz 9000 and Quartz Future 9000, those are not good for us.

Not exactly what I immediately did for my BMW, but since William did donated some items tonight, I can say I picked a few things up for my car. But really I'm posting to say had a good evening with William (wsmeyer), Jon (jupiterbmw) talking cars, etc. Also at the same time texting with Charlie (cakm3) talking mods and a couple of texts to Kevin (ritmusic2k). So, you could call it a mini/virtual mafia reunion. Always good to see those guys.

Yes, lots of love... Oh and John, I hope you and William are paying for that 'Chili Colorado' this morning... That stuff was good, but not so awesome the next day!!!

Super good times last night, always good to see you guys, and next time, hopefully the paddles are set to go again, that is a cool mod!

JP- William and I were actually at the Yard House until about 10:30 or so. It was a good time, but I'm freaking wiped now... Ah well, good times, we'll have to plan it all again. Oh! I actually looked at the inside of William's e-brake handle (he has the same BMW performance style, similar to mine but with the groove like you explained... Had the codes checked at Auto Zone. Lean bank one and lean bank two. I'm very certain that there are no vacuum leaks, the DISA is new, ICV is clean as a whistle, and the throttle body is brand new. I'm kinda lost on what next. I'm still getting some throttle lag when taking off in first. Could it be my O2 sensors or maybe my DME flash didn't take?

Same problem here, but only Bank 2. I have a torn intake boot & a leaky seal on my DISA valve. Pour some water on your DISA valve and see if you hear it gargling it (a BMW tech taught me this trick)

I've had good luck with the newer Khoalty bulbs. Their service seems a bit shifty of late though if you have any problems (from what I've heard).

Any input on good bulbs for the stock inside (trunk) light bulb? I've been looking for some that fit- and haven't found a good match yet.

Derek,

I would go with the larger LED boards with a wire with a spring loaded contact. This way you will have a larger board that sits on the side and has better output than a small LED..

I'm using one of these at the current moment.

They were like rocks, so I helped it thaw a bit by using the seat warmers throughout my commute. hmm, my car was parked outside overnight and my seats felt fine (asides for being freaking cold). It was 5° over here.

rest of my car wasn't very happy. Starter sounded a bit strained (that oil must have been essentially solid), my coolant light came on (turned off after heating up a little), and my rear shocks were clunking (at least I think it was my shocks - hopefully my subframe didn't decide to tear on me)

not necessarily. the o2 readings are how the car decides if it is running lean or rich. So they could fail in a way where the readings give a false positive. But since you have a bad disa seal and a torn intake, i'd say those are the cause of your codes (only bank two showing as bad still bugs me though)

We got the car from a dealer who received it as a trade in from the orignal owner, meaning the dealer probably gave the owner very little money for the car.. And they decide to throw away the extra keys to their old $80,000 car.. Some people just have too much money to care about things like this..

Chp is California highway patrol. They do inspections for vehicles that are salvage and go over the car checking everything to make sure it passes and is deemed safe. They also check receipts so the parts are not stolen.

You should have expected to fail it with the airbag light.

I had to do a salvage inspection prior to registration. But it has to be done on a shop approved by DMV. And turn back in to DMV with results for proper registration. There was never any CHP invovled.

I know it was a noob thing to do, but none of my cars have ever been referred. Oh well, it's free. I'll just fix it and retest. I didn't really know they checked it.

As far as safety goes, they don't dig into it too much. I could have easily removed the fuse for the airbag light and passed had I known they would care about it. I've seen some pretty unsafe cars get through CHP.

Mostly, it is for stolen parts. Not trying to sound racist, but there are a lot of Mexicans and Asians in California that are infatuated with Honda's and other JDM marques. This leads to a very high theft rate of parts and cars. Often what people will do it buy a car off auction, steal a bunch of parts, and then register the car. You'll never find the parts after that, so they do CHP inspections where they go through every single receipt and check for parts. They can get very brutal in their investigations, but they are usually easy on Euro brands because theft of parts isn't an issue with them like it is with JDM. The only reason they sent my car is because it is out of state (New Mexico).

Nice! I need to order some stealth bulbs for my Dad's new M5. I like subtle touch's like stealth bulbs, valve stem caps, roundel's etc.. I think they really help te car stand out from the others.

Looks like sometime this year I will hand the keys to my touring over to my dad (he doesn't want to rack up the miles on the M5), and I will start driving my Grandpa's old 1976 Cutlass Supreme, all original, with only 136k miles :)

Once I fix the pins on the silver cube trim. I got to cut some plastic to make the silver cube as oem looking as possible since I just don't want to epoxy them into place. Also I have the the oem headunit with the relocation kit already put into place. So it's a big gap under the oem headunit right now. All in all it doesn't look too nice now.

Main difference is its slightly thicker at the back of the top, I guess to fit the lighting hardware. Makes the knob appear more flat than the zhp knob. It's not really noticeable except when side by side. Feels about the same when driving.

Getting an alignment + balance on Monday. The road salt showed me that my left front wheel is riding a little too close to the edges, and I really do not want noisy tires. Plus, I want a straight wheel again.

I have a $39.99 for $120.00 Groupon at Import Performance that's about to expire on the 30th.

$170 - $120 + $39.99 = $89.99 for 4-wheel alignment + balance? Not bad at all.

Galveston Street in West Sac. Guy named Serge does great work for $40. When I still had my Jetta, he actually shifted my subframe (with the help of his employee) and did alignment for $80. If you need a number message me. It's good stuff.

Im trying to research a few places before just ordering since this is all new to me. I mainly will be dealing with OEM items tho.

Lol Johal, lets not kid ourselves here

You're looking to hand the keys to the touring over in hopes of getting the m5 keys in return :rofl

Yeah, lol.

I have already taken it out for a cruise, it is a pretty sweet whip. I babied it (kept it under 3.5k rpms), it just felt like a normal car to be honest. I know the car is very capable when you hit the accelerator, but it feels like a very nice and luxurious yet sporty car.. I really liked it. The Getrag 6 speed tranny is awesome.

I need to make a parts/budget list for the Cutlass with my Dad.. Planning to sem-restore it.. So far it needs, new tires (Kumho white walls will be the replacement), new shocks (Bilsteins), new battery (Costco brand, the old Costco battery lasted 17 years :shifty ), new carburetor (my uncle got us one for free! ), fix the transmission leak (and the torque converter may have taken a poo..)

Then move on to the cosmetics. Fix a small tear in the rear seats. A good clean (been parked for a few years), and possible some paint work (gotta make her purrrfect)

put a new 80deg thermostat in the E21... likely will get some mpg from the 9deg rise but mainly I'm hoping for an operational heater.

Ordered a radiator so I can completely overhaul the cooling system at the same time, but the t-stat on M10s is external so it was easy to do (on and off) in the parking lot at work today while helping customers

Just got done with a vacuum job and interior plastic shine up. I bought the Meguire's equivalent to armorall a few weeks back and just tried it for the first time. I really like it, as do I like most Meguire's products...

That spill from earlier in the day though, its in a tough spot, I'm going to have to remove the passenger seat to clean the carpet >=-/

Also, if you have not purchased yet...

Also, just ordered this, thanks for the link! I had $2.XX in ebay "bucks" about to expire, so why not...

make sure to disconnect your battery first so the seat sensor doesn't play havoc with the airbag light

That's kind of pricey

Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2

I would've expected to pay about $80-100 for an alignment and then $40 for a balance, so I'm pretty happy with the deal.

The good alignment places (that do race setups, high end, etc) here are like 120-180.

Bought a early birthday present. I used the mafia amazon link and it'll require a retune. I also bought a OBD cable to hopefully turn off my DRLs. Just need to study up on coding.

The sticker on my hood roundel froze off this week. Just ordered a new one from ECS, along with seven quarts of oil and a filter. Sure hope it warms up soon.

I wish I had access to a lift :(

I e-mailed the community college near here that has an automotive program.

They promptly said no way.

Same. I would definitely DIY pretty much everything if I had a lift, or had access to a lift nearby.
