there are multiple pieces that can be considered "the tie-rod" Are they talking inner, outer, both? Unless you live in a salt mine (also known as the rust belt) you should be able to adjust without heat...and even with heat, unless they are a Gorilla with the tools it shouldn't break.

Stu, we do live in a high-salt area (northeast). Mine were seized as well on my first alignment attempt, but after trying again a couple days later we got the outers to move with some PB Blaster. We snapped a super tight vice grip to it and gave it a few good smacks. Eventually it gave way, we didn't use heat.

The stripped caliper carrier bolt saga continues. Tried to remove it today with a Craftsman easy-out socket set. It literally just rounded it out more. The bolt isn't going anywhere.

I have no choice but to resort to a shop to extract it, as I do not have access to more efficient tools. I called a brake shop today and they said to bring it by on Tuesday and they'll get to it some time that day. Hopefully it won't be too expensive...

I'm assuming the best way to get it out is with a high-powered pneumatic impact wrench and a different type of bolt extractor, two things I don't have. Plus, I need much more clearance to get to it that way.

Sanded down most of my center console and armrest interior parts after Plastidip. Had to use WD40 and a pressure washer on the bigger pieces. Krylon Fusion will be here Tuesday and I will use that to paint.

Tap and die set or an appropriate drill bit and a drill should do it.

I finally put the oem aux input in the car and mounted it through the sunglass holder backing, driving the car more often so this was definitely a necessity and I'm very happy with the sound quality.

Replaced both front Rotors with ECS Tuning Geomet rotors (slotted). Also installed an aFe intake courtesy of Charlie.

Saw that my rear-left e-brake is rubbing intermittently. I am absolutely baffled by why. Tried adjusting it, I think it fixed it but I am not sure. When I do my rear wheel bearings and have to take off the e-brakes, I'll be replacing them anyway.

The fitment... you have to put a lot of pressure and have someone drill the holes for you, like how I showed you to do it at Codys.

Change out the power steering pump reservoir after my pump scare and pulled the brakes on the vert to clean them up and try some BMW OEM brake lube to get rid of the squeal. Didn't work. Damn Hawk Performance Ceramic Pads!

I spent a good 12 hours detailing my car Saturday and Sunday. Washed it, wiped it down. Clayed the entire car for the first time ever. Wiped it down again and then buffed the hood roof and rear quarter panels. (Would have buffed more if I had time) Wiped it down one more time and then used chemical guys jetseal 109 to get a good seal on my paint. Wiped it down after 20 minutes and then waited another 20 minutes before I applied a second coating. Wiped that down and then applied some wax.


My god. All I want to do is pet my car. It's as smooth as the small of Dane Wilson's back.

Dropped it off at a reputable brake repair place nearby to remove the stripped bolts. They said they should be able to do it no problem. They sounded unconcerned so it seems like it'll be easy for them to do.

Took my zhp through emissions today. I haven't replaced my ambient temperature sensor so I still had a check engine light on. P00070 is the code. Of course I go through and they fail me even though not having that sensor has absolutely zero effect on emissions. I told the guy politely that I thought it was silly and he got super butthurt about it and asked if I was smarter than the Maryland emissions board.

Whatever. I have until January of next year to get it done. I might even throw on my new bumper after I get it painted from eurowerks. Car is still running like a top.

Haha no way. I did a DIY front end respray already. For medium to long range it looks fine. But close up it is blatantly obvious that the paint is shitty and not very shiny. I don't regret doing it though. It was a learning experience and it does look better than it did before. But its time to let the professionals take over this time.

I'm so glad to finally have smooth braking back. I did it proper this time, new Textar pads and Zimmermann Coat Z rotor with BMW brake grease on the ears of the pads/sliding locations, but not the guide pins. Totally clean and dry.

Completely even, smooth braking on all four corners, no missing spots on the brake rotor - which is what I saw last time with my old rotors. I've got a feeling the biggest culprit to my problems were the old brake pads. I don't know who they're made by, and I can't find any markings on them.

One thing I wish they told me about the rotors is that they make a rough noise for the first 10-20 miles of braking due to the coating slowly rubbing off. I thought I had done something wrong at first. After a little bit of city driving it came right off.

The rotors really do look good with the anti-rust coating.

You need to find some highway and brake from 60 to 10 a few times in succession. Then you will truly have some stopping power.

This is what I've been worrying about as well. I would love a Dynavin but I don't want it if it's not going to feel OE. It looks OE, but the interface needs to match...especially at $600

The next stickers are actually a pretty cool story. They're SUPPOSED to come with my car so technicians don't mess up the tune, but my car (and quite a few 135is cars) didn't come with the stickers. I had my SA order them, and since they're supposed to come on the car, they were free. And since my SA is awesome, he gave me the entire sheet with a bunch of languages. Of course, I had to make my car multi-cultural.

This is exactly why I'm stuck when it comes to upgrading the head unit in my car. There's nothing aftermarket that meets the polish an OEM unit can have. They look more updated, but they also look obviously out of place. :(

washed the X completely for the first time in what seems like months...summer has been easy going on dirt...just needed to clean wheels and tailpipes every few days

Last night I washed 3 ZHP, washed the interior windows and wiped down the interior with Meguiar's interior detail cleaner. Today I finished up by blowing off the floor mats, washed all exterior windows with Meguiar's Clear Glass Cleaner, applied Meguiar's interior detail cleaner to all the exterior black moldings & panels and put a top coat of P21s Carnauba Wax on the bonnet and boot. All this for Nashville Cars n Coffee in the morning. First Saturday of the month so, the exotics will be out and the weather is, sunny with a high of 91 with a 0% chance of rain. Oops; forgot, wiped down the engine compartment and the engine with Meguiar's interior detail cleaner. Love that stuff, it brings out the black without making it look wet or oily.

Hope it's good, first time since June. :)

I was considering insulating the outside of it with foam tape. I may still do that but I don't want to muffle the good sounds...

As for the running condition, no real changes. I can't seem to pin down the source of my issue. I'll just go with it for now.

So yesterday at work they were blowing mulch around the grounds. Amazing technique for mulch spreading, but it meant that my car had a layer of fine mulch on it by the end of the day. Got home too late to wash, so I rinsed it off, which led to water spots. So today I washed and waxed. Still no swirls so no need for polish. Simple wash and menz power lock.

Since the goodies came in from Bavauto last week, I couldn't wait for the weekend to slap them on. I bought the car with a cracked dead pedal kick panel and the dried up cracking windshield cowling. The dead pedal panel swap was a breeze but the cowling was a bit of a drag. Even though there was 0 corrosion, I couldn't get the viper arms off and it took a pulling tool to get them off. Then, I discovered how much dirt and dust there was under the cowling and in the drain grooves at the top of each fender. Took me a good couple of hours to clean everything to my satisfaction. The installation was a breeze though. Feeling good now! :happydane

Thanks for sharing, I have been on the fence about one for a long time. My OEM nav is definitely out of date, but it looks like it belongs in there, I don't have time to be doing all of that crazy programming they do with them either (or did back when they first came out). If I'm going to put something like that in my car, I want it to work correctly (all of it) out of the box. And does anyone actually use the in-dash CD/DVD player anymore? I think it would look better without that at the top of the unit. Let people install a remote changer in the trunk or somewhere else if they need that. I listen to pandora or the ipod app on my iphone, thats it.

I removed the old foam....and bought 25' of insulating strip, cut to size, and fixed lickity split. I have enough to last the lifetime of the mount :shifty

Today I washed Wobz with a good ol' fashioned hose. My usual washing method involves 4 gallons of distilled water and two buckets, with a quick rinse at a self-car wash prior to using the buckets. ONR in one bucket, the other one is used to rinse the mitt. Then, dry with a microfiber that I have to wring out twenty-thousand times.

Today I used the hose, two buckets, and shammy. Much faster...
Too bad I have to go into a flea-infested basement to turn the water on. :(

Well I´ve been out the last couple of days had the opportunity to go to Berlin b/c of work and was able to go around the city, beautiful and tons of awesome looking BMW´s but very little time to take out the camera and take a picture.

Was able to go to a dealership but unfortunately the one I chose to go to was closed due to a showroom setup, pretty sure I saw an M4 through a small peephole heheheheh.


Now back home need to take Heinz to the shop for maintenance and get the passenger window regulator replaced

So here's the deal....I'm beginning to believe the guy who straightened my wheels didn't exactly straighten them all the way.

It took him 2 days to do it, and he mentioned it was a particularly difficult job. Today at high speed, I noticed a slight vibration upon putting on my brand-new brakes...

I lifted my front wheels up and spun them, noticing the brakes grabbing ever so slightly more at certain points in the wheel. I also noticed an ever so slight wobble on both sides that coincides with the brake grabbing noise. I have contacted the company that straightened my wheels a few years ago - they claim to have a lifetime warranty on all workmanship. I explained to them the situation, will hear back on Monday. I noticed the brake issues after they repaired the wheels, but did not attribute them to the wheels as a shop told me it was just my rotors that were below spec, and I was told by the wheel repair guy that all four wheels were true.

What a lame scenario this whole thing has been.

It would be in your splash shield and typically not on the ground. I recommend you pull it off and thoroughly inspect drain plug, pan gasket vcg and ofhg.

Could be normal burn as well.

Check your valve cover gasket. I've got the same problem right now and it doesn't leak oil in the ground or splash guard. Its got to be coming from the valve cover gasket near the firewall. Maybe exhaust side.

Cool. Be sure to inspect the "waffle" area next to ofhg (drivers side) , and ensure you shine a light down the passenger side as well, to really hunt for and rule out a leak.

Also ensure all of your valve cover bolts are torqued to spec.

I finally picked up the ZHP from the body shop. New bumper, two new fender liners and 1 porkchop, outdoor temp sensor, and an alignment.

Fresh TiAg paint on hood, fenders, bumper and fresh black for the grill. Then popped in a couple bimmian painted reflectors. Happy camper.

Well, after 80 days of rest, I got the ZHP out of hibernation. I grabbed the keys and gave her a crank. She started right up like she had only been sitting for an hour. And she ran beautifully, so the day after I got home, I took her across the state to Tampa. Just got home late last night, but I have to admit, the car was so damn smooth. She purred at 80-85 the whole way. The car runs beautifully and is a blast to drive.

On the way home, I stopped and met up with Steve (prowlerflyer) who was kind enough to let me take his ESS stage 2 supercharged ZHP for a drive. Very nice. A very nicely put together setup and incredibly refined in terms of drivability and power delivery. Supercharging is on my radar again...

Then later at night, as the incredible bugs started to come out, I realized my windshield washer pump apparently died. I had to pull over and wash the windshield as the bugs were so bad, I could barely see the road!

Left my car at the shop for some preventive maintenance, belts, tensioners, gas and oil filters, oil, spark plugs and valve cover gasket and window regulator for the passenger. I bought all the parts on amazon, I hope the shop keeps its good reputation they told me about.

I got 38,005 miles on them. Mounted them in May 2011 with 105,995 on my odometer. I now have just over 144k on my odometer. :thumbsup These tires have been incredibly awesome to run on!

That's because I have just enough negative camber so that with spacers mounted, my tires do not rub...It's a trade off that I'm willing to endure...

Numbers don't lie here...in fact, I too am surprised by how much I have put on the ZHP thus far but then I have pretty much resorted to driving this "perfect" daily over the much more powerful ///M I have in my stable ;) I really love the feel and look of the Imola ZHP for daily driver duties. Also, having a car that is more rare than the E46 ///M is a treat wouldn't you agree? :)

Courtesy of Gary, my c/f wrapped oil cap. The one from Bimmian yellowed and they wouldn't replace it under warranty, even though it was within the warranty period. So, don't buy that cap from them. Gary saved the day by offering to wrap it.

Well I just picked up Heinz from the shop and all I can say is I LOVE HIM LIKE HOMER J. SIMPSON LOVES HIS DONUTS!

They replaced belts, oil, filters, tensioners, but what really hit the spot were the spark plugs, it still had the oem´s in it and they were completely worn out, he now runs so smoothly and the responsiveness improved substantially. Im so happy the shop lived up to its reputation and now I can say Im relieved that I have found a shop for my car.

Weekend home alone looks like hell be getting tons of TLC :)

Sheetrock could use some paint, or at least some primer. I don't understand why some builders take the time to sheetrock, mud and tape a garage and then not paint it, looks unfinished. No offense intended, jealous of the extra room that you have being that you have two separate single car garage doors as opposed to the smaller width you typically get (and I have) with a single double garage door. I can't wait to "pimp" my garage, it's already finished/painted, but I want to do the floors, lighting and some other things. First thing that needs to go is my roomie and his leaky Toyota Camry. Hoping that the better half's condo sells soon so we can do just that!

Haven't done much lately. Installed 15mm spacers up front (new et is 20). Rear still rubs (et 35 w/ 255s) Should have done 225 square on the 18x9 rims with more low :/

Also installed ambers back up front, and painted my headlight housings black, installed 2500k fogs. Full paint wet sand and buff!

I'll try to get pics up soon.. My friend wants to use my car for his photo project haha. Perfect way to get some nice dslr shots!

The vert is sitting at 49,990 this evening, she got a fresh oil change today as well as new belts. Checked w/p shaft and it was tight, tensioners no noises and rolled freely, no play in any of those bearings at all, FTW. When belly pan was off its amazing how clean the engine is on my wife's car, like brand new.

FYI: the only tool required is a Philips screw driver to remove the turn signal, everything else snaps out. The entire job can be done in less than a 1/2 hour.

Put air in my tires...

Suspected I would need to have my wheels balanced but when I looked at my driver rear tire it looked funny. Grabbed my pressure gauge and inspected tk find there was no air in my tire...literally no reading from the guage!!! How ciuld that be? Did I drive it home like that? I've only had it for three weeks now but its insane how much air could escape. Hope its not a crack.

But for now there is no vibration above 80.

Changed my oil this morning at about 9,500 miles so I was about 2,000 miles over due from when I normally like to change it.

Also changed the spark plugs.

Over all an easy job. Definitely easier than my E36.

All in all both jobs took me about an hour and a half total.

Drove mine to work, put the center console back together last night (at work). I had to pull it apart because I spilled some water the other day on the hazard/lock button and my hazards started flashing on their own. I would turn them off and after about 5 seconds, they would come back on. Had to pull the center to pop the button out, disconnect it and let it dry up.

My poor car, it used to have an owner that cared more about it, I dunno what happened to that guy. I need to snap out of it, I recently came to the realization that this car needs to last me until at least 2018. Not that I would sell it or trade it in at that point, but that is the earliest point at which I will be able to buy my second BMW.

Removed the steering wheel and performed the Alcantara restore DYI using the Mr.Clean Magic Eraser (Original). At first, it didn't seem to make a difference but in the end it turned out pretty well. It does need some patience. The lint remover and a soft tooth brush also help to remove the white bits of Mr.Clean foam and groom it. By the way, I would say that the best way to do it with the wheel off. First, it's much easier and second, the interior is safe from the mess of tiny particles (Mr.Clean foam bits) the process produces. Now the wheel is packed and ready to be shipped to another forum member for a straight swap for a leather version. Sniff... sniff. :( :)

Taught my wife how to drive her! She has been itching to learn how to drive a manual. I've been itching for her to learn so I don't have to feel slightly irresponsible buying only manual BMWs (only an issue since we have two little kids and God forbid there was an emergency at home and I had the family car out and about)!

She picked it right up, not surprising as I find that BMW's are great to learn on. I taught my sister about 10 years ago using the same methodology: press clutch and brake pedals, ignore gas. Release brake pedal, assuming you are on level street, and as slowly as humanly possible, release the clutch pedal until the car idles forward, then slowly press the gas pedal.

If you haven't tried, you'd be amazed that you can go from standstill to go without touching the gas in a BMW. I don't recall ever trying this in my Honda / Acura days, but I do recall those clutches having a VERY different feel to them.

The trouble is, I have just enough stuff from my other hobbies (surfing and motorcycling) to make it a challenge. Slowly but surely, I have managed to make some good headway by utilizing vertical space and getting rid of some junk. Very proud of myself to building my own shelf (in the top left) and getting the bicycle and surf boards mounted high off the ground.

Check out the before (a few years ago) and the state of it as of this evening.

As you can see, the motorcycle and the seats from my VW Eurovan are the main offenders here. The bike I can make fit but the damn seats are the main issue. They are too heavy (to go vertical) and too bulky to arrange them in a better way. As tempting as it is, I can't toss the seats as I will need them for the time when I sell the VW. So I'm still unconvinced that it will work but who knows, perhaps I'll figure something out. In fact, I know that I WILL make it work! Even if it's tight as sardines in there. :cigar

Congratulations to your S.O. She is now part of the statistics that only 3% of the population in the U.S. that really knows how to drive a stick. Key word.."really knows how to drive". Time for a driving school using the stick. Which if taken a step further...is the greatest car theft deterrant.

So many people use their garage space as storage or a hoarding location, and its good to see people taking care of the one possession that belongs in the garage, the CAR.

I squeeze 2 cars into a 2 car garage, and that's with 24" deep cabinets on one side and a 30" deep workbench/rollaway tool chest on the other side. :thumbsup to people that actually put their cars in their garage.

Not to worry....I am also partially in that group of folks. I do have a 3 car garage. 2 of the 3 are occupied by cars....and one of them is my garage queen. The 3rd is my workshop/workbench. JP has seen my garage....it is packed to the best of availability. And my side pathway (beside the garage) is also used as work area with another workbench. In a way...I am also a pack rat.

I too witness the same phenomena around here. Just across the way, the family owns two gorgeous Dinan-badged BMWs and they keep them in front of their house. Meanwhile, their two-car garage is used for gardening supplies and is only about half full. Over the last few years, I can see that the paint on the cars has faded, trims and moldings have dried up and cracked. Why such cruelty? :crying

Anyhow, I figured that if I have a garage, my Beemz is gonna be sleeping in it. I guess we're all pack-rats to some degree and sometimes it takes some ingenuity to make it all fit. Kind of like playing tetris.

Sounds like my neighborhood (and potentially most of america, perhaps northerners are not quite as bad due to the colder temps?). There are two cars in my garage and I try to keep it pretty clean. My attic on the other hand, wow, its like a hoarders wet dream up there.

Looking at buying a set of used carbon fiber splitters. One is perfect...the other not so much. The damaged splitter has some bumps and bruises that aren't too bad but aren't bad enough that I wouldn't put them on my car as is. How hard would it be to re finish the damaged splitter?

Found a sizable slit in the right rear tire side wall. Which means new tires (atleast rear). I did find these locally and have the guy talked down to 490. What do you guys think? Will they fit? Look like a decent winter set up while I save for new tires for summer?

Shredded one of the old rear tires. NOt sure how--it shredded on the inner sidewall and started making funny noises on the freeway. Didn't feel like a blown tire but I pulled off and found tire was shredded and rubbing inner fender and rear shock. Put on donut spare, which looked silly and drove 50mph on freeway, pissing off other drivers. After work put on track wheels and dropped rear 135s at Costco for Pilot Super Sports.

Not sure what happened. Tread was very low, beyond wear bars, but not totally gone. I did some AutoX fun runs on these tires Saturday including some light drifting. Maybe I corded the inner shoulder and didn't know. Or had leak and let the air pressure get too low.

But the donut spare, as silly as it looks, got me to work and home. I guess runflats would have done the same if merely flat; not sure they work if sidewall is shredded.

Steve, my experience driving some Blizzaks far enough north to know what they're actually for, is that they are going to be incredible in snow and especially ice. And on dry roads, you"re definitely going to know you're not on a performance tire. So, there's trade offs.

Not only got several frosty mornings last winter up on the edge of the Santa Cruz Mountains, but a few times I've driven to the Willow Springs tracks in temps as low as 27F. Actually thought about it in tire selection since the Yokohama Neova AD08 (or whatever latest versions is) have some warning against exposing them to temps below 14F.

Costco put on the rear PSS tires on my rear style 135 rims yesterday to replace the shredded tire and its worn mate. Now my street wheels are finally a matched set again and just have to swap the wheels onto the car.

just picked up the style 285's with the blizzak tires on them. The wheel are flawless with zero scratches and the tires have less than 5k miles on them. not bad for 490. now I can get the 135's trued and powder coated.

Personally I think you would have been better off buying the Style 68 set with tires than these... doesn't look right on an E46 IMO.
I'm of the "no compromises mindset" in this regard...

Ive been looking at some front spoiler splitters, love the look, any recommendations of where to get them?

Ordered some Dr ColorChip. Gonna tackle that project next weekend, it'll be pretty big since my front has so many chips. I'll post some good before/after pics :)
