1. Fixed some jammed up plastic at the foot A/C area under the glovebox. This had been like this since I got the car a few months ago.

2. Removed 80% of headliner pieces. Preparing for black suede...

3. Took a few headliner pillars to upholstery shop to be recovered

4. Ordered about $120 in parts: various headliner parts, new shift knob

The S50 and M50 use all the same parts to swap... plus, isn't the law that if the engine is NEWER than the model year it's going into then it's fine? OBD-I to OBD-I shouldn't be an issue, right?

I thought S50 was never available in the US, just S52. It also needed to be something available for sale in California, and the swap would have to comply to many requirements that the car that you claim to be the source of the engine. This is why I can't just run Euro motor setup

They made three versions of the S50. There's the one you're talking about, the S50B30, which was never sold here. It was sold in euro M3's between 1992-1995. Then there's the S50B30US, the one we received here only in 1995. In 1996, they moved to the S52B32 here and the S50B32 in europe.

You can get a US S50 from any 1995 M3. This is the engine I had in my E30.

I have never seen a euro S50 listed when I was looking because they were extremely hard to find. Are you checking eBay? Craigslist?

I bought mine for 2800, but this was 4 years ago. They should be considerably cheaper now...

I also have rarley seen a EURO S50 for sale.

JP, any S50 out of an E36 M3 will work. the 1995 M3 has the S50B30, the 1996-1999 M3's have the S52B32.

maybe I'm just not paying attention when I see them because I assumed S50 was the euro motor, and to be honest I haven't really looked at anything besides M10 (E30 version with EFI) or M20. I started thinking about this yesterday when my buddy said he has a few really good M50s that I can have complete with all the other things I need for the swap for a little over $1000. Considering my M10 had 100hp/100ft-lb new, even just a regular M50 will be a huge improvement (and lack of VANOS as long as I don't get a TU engine). I'll look into S50 some more, but I still need to find those 323 parts or all of this is just talk

the other thing is, if I wanted to go crazy with a S engine I already have a better option that I know where to get it:

Good luck JP.
That engine is a lot more expensive than the S50 as far as I know, both in cost and maintenance.

Also, don't bother with an E30 M10; they are pathetic. If anything, the M20 sounds like your most cost effective solution. Make sure it's a M20B25, not a B27. There's a good 40hp difference between the two...

Okay JP. That seems like a smart decision.

I could have gone 292, 300, or 304 and still been able to tune the carbs to have some sort of idle but it would have required modifying the piston top to clear the valves. Since the pistons were $180 each, I decided that rather than messing with those 10:1 tii pistons I'll just go conservative. If I want to run a different cam, I can always build the current motor once I have this one installed

I miss my auto-dimm and home-link rearview mirror; something went wrong with my retrofit, after about a year, the thing went crazy and self-destructed. I bought another, swapped out the mirror only to have it do the same thing immediately when I plugged it in. The only thing that changed was I tapped my old radar detector back in, I think it was using the same power line. Now that I have a different radar detector (hard wired correctly too) I want to try another auto-dimm, but I'm skeered it might still be messed up.

On topic...

Drove my car to work today, I usually park it in the shop, but the operator I was relieving had his car in there, so I parked outside and left the windows and sunroof open. A couple of hours later a downpour hits, thankfully I was right on top of it. Got it closed up and pulled in the shop quick, pulled everything out of it and dried it down. Pulled the back seat and put two fans facing downward at the rear floorboard carpet to circulate the air just incase.

It was quite an adrenaline and emotional rush to say the least.

Mike your 1M is gorgeous.

I installed my TSE3 today. It is loud. Sounds fantastic with that low growl that just purrs at idle and then turns into more of a throaty scream as you increase the RPMs. I felt the difference instantly but it won't offer extreme performance gains. I can just tell the car is not only breathing better from the intake but flowing better now that the two are paired together. I'm looking forward to getting my car reflashed by eurocharged next time I'm in SF.

If I couldn't hear it in the car all the time I think I would love it, but right now it is a like relationship and I'll have to start driving my car differently. Keep it under 2k for my neighborhood and around town. Then when I need to use the freeway let it roar for a bit :)

Low is a lifestyle and owning a TSE3 is a lifestyle. I felt weird pulling into my garage at 12AM because it seemed so loud.

They will save considerable weight compared to the OE seats and still retain heat functionality, which is important to me. They are very comfortable to sit in and look awesome. After working on them yesterday, I decided that once additional funding becomes available, this is the first thing I'm getting for my ///M.

911 seats

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/320i/null-57.jpg

I don't have the passenger installed because of autoX tomorrow

Ha, I remember those! They are mid-70s onward standard 911 seats!

I put a set of those in my car after the recline mechanism in my original 1970 sofa suddenly let go (think "auto-recline" when you hit a bump). Those very mint mid-70s seats are now for sale now since I replaced them with a set of Flofit sport seats (US made knockoff of the Recaro LS). It's funny, I was actually looking for a set of E21 BMW sport seats when I found the Flofits!

I did a lot for my car this weekend (yeah, I know, it's about freakin' time).

(1) I wired in a Rockford Fosgate P3001 (150W@4ohms/300W@2ohms conservatively) mono amp - had to take the back seats and side panel off, and tap into the rear L&R speaker wires and remote on at the harness before the factory amp. It's mounted to a carpeted board, but I've left it "loose" in the trunk until I figure out my final install.

(2) I removed the factory HK subwoofer and my ski bag in prep for a potential armrest sub install - man that factory sub was hard to remove without breaking it, particularly the little "hump" of plastic that covers the connector. In case anyone else has trouble removing this, you squeeze and pull straight out (perpendicular to the driver).

(3) I temporarily popped in the subwoofer box from my winter vehicle (an Energy ENC10B ported box with 10" driver) to see how it sounds - it pounds pretty good when the truck is open, but probably only 1/4 of the sound escapes the closed trunk. Damn you German cars! I was considering a JL Audio 6.5" Microsub as it will fit standing on the front lip of the trunk floor up against the seats and take up very little space, but not so sure after my experience with the Energy box. Now I'm leaning back towards a custom enclosure in the armrest. If ANYONE has any templates for this, please share!!! Many have done this, but NONE have posted measurements of templates!

(4) ghetto-installed the whole system using the tie-downs and bungee cords until I figure out my final install.

(5) I cleaned the interior after climbing in and out a million times to re&re the backseat area

(6) I washed and waxed the exterior

(7) I sent out one of my sets of factory wheels to get "remanufactured" at P Jacques in Montreal - I actually found a hairline crack on the inside lip of two of them! I've asked them to be painted a slightly darker grey then original, to better hide the brake dust. When I get them back, I will transfer the new tires to that set of wheels and will install my old baldies on the current set for winter storage. I'll keep my good tires in the basement to protect them from the cold this winter.

(8) I took pictures of the car for the first time since I bought it in the spring!!!

How do you get the tips smoked?JR, I shipped them to a company over in Akron that specializes in chrome applications. A bit pricey ($300), but I couldn't find any firms locally that offered the service so I was between a rock and a hard place.

Now that's done I can't imagine anything else that needs attention. I thought about the side repeaters in shadowline from IND, but the stock repeaters have so little chrome that it doesn't bother me as much as the exhaust tips did.

Guess I should now just save up for the Pilot Super Sports that will be necessary within the next couple of years.

Nice!

I washed and waxed Heinz over the weekend, ordered a bunch of parts off amazon including belt tensioners, spark plugs, belts, valve cover gasket and gas filter.... Hopefully will have em here by next monday.Heinz? That's a novel name.........I like it though, because it's original. I named my IR ZHP 'Blood and Roses' after a tune by The Smithereens (doubt that many folks here are familiar with that group).

Your M68 rims look really good! Must be your every day wheels since down in C A you have little need for winter rims, huh? :)

My TSE3 sounds nice :p Nice to see this on your ZHP Sean! :thumbsup Realistically...as much as I would like to have those door panels....they're not for sale just yet so I will wait on pricing but the BMW Performance seats are available. They will save considerable weight compared to the OE seats and still retain heat functionality, which is important to me. They are very comfortable to sit in and look awesome. After working on them yesterday, I decided that once additional funding becomes available, this is the first thing I'm getting for my ///M.

The Sportster CS seats are available with heat option and much cheaper and easier to install

Oh, and I did a quick cleanup on the Porsche as well. It's been neglected this year - between a fuel leak (now fixed) and a front end shimmy (not yet fixed) I've only put about 300kms on it this year.

Freshly washed. It has next dibs on a wax job.
10045

Flofit seats - very comfortable and very grippy.
10046

Gratuitous engine shot - 2.7L of RS-spec goodness!
10047

Beautiful P-car

After all the work over this weekend, I have to give my driving impressions and a pic of the c/f fog surrounds. So, I was at 16.5 mpg before the mods. Clearly the computer is adjusting as I'm at 10.5 mpg (actually went up to 11 today). But, who cares. When I drove off this morning I thought the Sprint Booster was on red, but it was only on green! The car has so much more pick up already, and it definitely pulls even harder at higher revs. It's WAY more quiet with the fan delete (I still don't full get how it's such a difference), and all in all, this thing is sweet! Can't wait for the VANOS to break in fully. Very happy so far. I'll post this exact info in my project thread too.

Frankly I hadn't waxed my car in a long time, so any wax would have been an improvement. With black I do as little as I can so I can avoid swirls. It's called Black Ice by Surf City Garage. It went on easy, looks good, and best of all does not leave that white wax residue when you're done. Gary and I saw it at Pep Boys and tried it on a whim.

So another "active" day today -

Got my wheels back from P Jacques in Montreal where I sent them to be remanufactured. These guys are the old standard in wheel repair/reman and they did a great job as usual.
1008510086
I wanted them a little darker than stock as they are quite hard to keep clean, and I liked the darker look that the brake dust gives them, other than the inconsistency. They came out a little darker than I expected, but they should look quite good on a white car.

They suggested I wait until Monday to let the paint fully cure before installing the tires. I will make an appointment at the tire shop for Monday AM!

I also pulled the plug and put in a big order with Bavarian Soundwerks - I purchased the Stage 1 speaker kit for HK-equipped cars, and the ib110 subwoofer system less the amp (I have my own Rockford Fosgate which is very similar to the one that they used to package the sub with). I dealt with Jason there, and he was excellent about answering all of my questions and really helping me understand the audio system in the car and details on their product. If the product turns out to be anywhere near as good as the service to date I will have no hesitation in recommending them. I hope to pick up the order in Ogdensburg NY on Monday afternoon, and do the install on Friday.

I'm like a kid at Christmas!! :santa1

I believe the laws for CA allow up to limo tint in the rears and none in the front. Because of my light interior (natural brown) my tints would appear more transparent than those with darker interiors such as black.

I haven't had any problems as of yet and I'm mainly in the South Bay where there is a lot of sun.

It's about $150/wheel. It depends on the specific amount of work needed - if there are major bends or cracks that need to be welded it can be a little more... but generally under $175/wheel for the worst repairable cases.

I stupidly lost control of my Miata at a poorly-designed autocross (as an instructor, no less :facepalm ) back in 2000, and hit a curb straight-on at over 100km/h and launched the car into a ditch. All 4 of my TSW Hockenheims were badly bent but they managed to fix them and make them like new again.

Pondering whether or not to buy a 323i complete (E21). We believe it was Federalized, but not necessarily for Cali (has long expired Nevada registration). Will have to look into it some more before I do anything. Makes more sense than trying to convert my 320 into a 6cyl. Everything depends on what sort of condition it's in because this guy is old and wants you to physically show up, no pics - just description. My buddy is supposed to make a trip to go see it, he will let me know soon enough. Until then the spending on the E21 will be put to a min/only parts that are interchangeable on a 323i.

Is it hard to swap in a m20b25 or just hard to find ingood condition there? I have a spare if you need it.

It can be done. Do you have any relatives in Vegas? Use their resident address. The bring over to Cali with Nevada plates. No relatives? Use a PO Box.

Yeah... Not sure what to do with this car yet. I picked up a set of new RSM's that I will install this weekend, but I need to get more info on this 323 before I make more plans.

John, M20 is the easiest swap but still requires a lot of work. B27's seem to be easier to find out here than B25's but both are easily available.

Lawrence, the bahn is supposed to get this car soon. I'll call you and fill you in on the details that John told me

Thanks man. Its awesome. Its just VERY expensive because its the highest end of the highest end stuff.

Not entirely true Antone! 3M tint is insanely pricey because it has the name 3M. I went with Llumar FormulaOne, and that stuff is REALLY good as well. They have a 'clear' tint much like the Crystalline, but its not as pricey. If you're interested in the 'clear' tints, look also at Llumar AirBlue80.

It does look really good Antone. Personally, I do not like riding with the fish bowl look, but a light tint is more than enough for me. :thumbsup

Hah. Thanks. I wasn't claiming that other tints were not about as good for much cheaper. I am sure llumar makes good stuff. However, I did look into Airblue80 when considering my options. I wanted something as clear as possible and Airblue80 blocks out 10% more light than 3M 90. Also, reading reviews of Airblue80 (and looking at a ton of pictures comparing tints), there were a few people who didn't like the blue tint that this tint gave them. I thought that might bother me as well so I just coughed up the money for 3M. 3M also offers a wide range of their crystalline line, from 90 all the way down to 50, I believe.

I would love crystalline on my windshield. That stuff blocks out heat like crazy! I want to replace my windshield before putting this bad boy on. I got too many rock chips.

I'm reinstalling BMW INPA with NCS Expert 3.10 and GT1 V57 and SSS V32. I had a kernel panic when I tried to open GT1 after some windows 7 update. Installing VMware 9.0 workstation to replace the 7.0 I had before as well. Hopefully I will have a working Progman, GT1 and INPA, NCSexpert by tonight.

Derek,
I strongly advise having a separate partition for Windows with the BMW software on it. Turn off Windows update, do not install antivirus, and turn off Windows Firewall. Install nothing on the system at all other than the BMW stuff. This will guarantee that this won't happen again.

hah. Well in San Francisco everything is twice as expensive as it should be. That might be for the windshield only, for example. You might be able to get it cheaper. I had all my windows done, including the windshield and sunroof. I don't remember the exact figure but it was well over $1000.

I agree. And its not just tint, man. Honestly it was a decent amount cheaper in san jose but....its san jose. Im in SF. Ill pay extra for convenience. So, trancenation, I see you are in the Bay Area too. Call some places on the peninsula or the south bay. Youll be able to do better than me for sure. Just make sure you check the 3M website and make sure the place is a certified 3M dealer so you can get the lifetime warranty.

So it wasnt just me.

The tint film itself for crystalline is insanely expensive compare to regular tint.

3M had a sample desk lamp with several films on 2" square glass cards. The 5% film does reduce heat but at the cost of loss of light coming in. The clear 3m crystalline repelled heat better than the 5% tint and had me in awe. Unfortunately the cost of the film made me steer away from it.

I opt for regular 3M 35% and ask my friends tint guy to do it on the side for under $200.

Big weekend for the ZHP: my passenger headlight blew, so I replaced both bulbs with Philips D2s' from theretrofitsource.com. Top class company, always order bulbs from them. Dust caps wouldn't come off my headlights while they were installed, so I had to remove both headlight assemblies.

While down there, I figured out why my foglight wasn't sitting correctly in the housing. Easy fix. Also clipped in the upper part of my lower mesh grille (which I thought was broken); just took a little force, and now the grille is in place and the crack in the bumper from the previous owner is aligned and is much less noticeable.

Also bought a new set of staggered tires from town fair tire: Michelin Pilot Super Sports. Can't wait until they come in.

Lastly, gave my dad's G37 S a full service detail. Gave him the works - engine bay, interior, clay bar, and seal (heavy compounding not necessary, only took my little 3" pad to areas with scratches). I must say I'm proud of myself - I think it looks incredible now.

So my right rear tire is low (also referred to as a tar in East TN)....

Luckily, I have a full size spare. Bad news is - not sure if it's a rear or front wheel and the tire doesn't match what I have on the car currently. More bad news is the car has Pilot Sports and those are expensive...

There's a brand new Discount Tire that opened up not far from my house. I'm going to stop there and see if they can patch the leak (if possible) and then go from there.

You California boys are crazy! As much as I miss the good driving roads, I do NOT miss the cost of living there...
Ha! As a native Californian not only could I not afford the cost of living while there, I also couldn't afford the cost of dieing there either! ;)

Managed to find a 3/8" screw Saturday on a back road between Timbukone and Timbuktwo and had to limp to a garage to get a "Hillbully Plug" (HP). The M Mobility Kit compressor was a life saver, the goo was worthless.

First flat I've had in at least fifteen years.

Ordered a new PS2 at Discount Tire today. I was floored when the service adviser informed me I was getting a $100 credit from Michelin as well, which is based on the residual of the tire remaining (7/32 tread remaining). Hats off to Michelin for this program.

The below pic shows the actual offending screw in a sipe just above the HP.

Also ordered 3 Dyna Plug kits, one for each horseless carriage.

Having grown it up in CA, I gotta wonder... Are things really that much cheaper in other states?

Personally, I have come to the sad realization that I'm paying *almost* the cost of living as California, yet I live in an inferior location (Connecticut). WTH am I doing here???

Mike, did you mean to type 8/32?

I discovered a slash in the sidewall of my Pilot Sport last night so I took it to a brand new Discount Tire this morning by my house. The service was awesome and I was very impressed with their facilities. Anyways, the tech told me that my tire tread measured at 7/32 and thus I did not qualify for the discount as 8/32 was the cut off. Wonder what's up with that?

I replaced my old tire with the newest Pilot Sport AS 2 model.

What do I want to do to my ZHP today is the question...

The nose of my car including bumper and is getting reconditioned after some yo-yo decided he had to back into me in a parking lot (why do all my accidentts happen while i am parked)?

Anyway, I got the body shop to delete the license plate holes from the bumper and respray the mesh grill bits in the nose in the bumper. I am tempted to get them to paint the reflectors or put in clears in the bumper too.

2006 ZHP Coupe TiAg

My questions -

Do i paint the mesh grill to match the paint or black? Seems like they all sort of turn gray after awhile and tempted to go to with TiAg rather than gray.

Painted reflectors or clears (I have ambers now - the only amber on the car)?

Is Anything else or should I be thinking about things differently? - Love to hear your thoughts.

I think black grills always look best. I would personally ask if they could delete the reflector all together.

Painting the reflectors looks good to me, but they don't reflect. So, if you want that, then clears. AFA the lower grill, I painted mine gloss black, and I've seen others do this, and it looks good. Painting to match the Tiag would be pretty cool too, tough choice. Let us know what you decide.

Am I right they're not OEM clear reflectors? Who else makes them? How is the fit compared to the OEM ?

I got mine from ECS tuning. and they had them on sale for something like $15 I think..(pair). The fit is very good, i'd say 99% of OEM fit.

I replaced both front turn signals on my Mini Cooper because they were cracked. The OEM parts were around $ 90 (with S/H) at Bavarian Autosport. And I paid $ 30 for installation (you must remove the bumper to install).

Well I've had them listed for about 6-8 months. Pretty much trying to give them away. I bumped the price back up and randomly had a hit today.

Just got lucky I guess.

I put on a set of painted reflectors from bimmian and am overall very impressed. I was wary about ordering from them because I heard a lot of bad things about them but ended up getting them anyway. Colors match perfectly. Right side is completely flush, but the left side has a slight gap on the wheel side (see pic). Bothered me for about 5 minutes then I was over it. You can only tell it's like that when you look up close from the back angle. I give them a 9/10.

I also ordered black matte shadow emblems from bimmian too but they looked absolutely HIDEOUS. Cheap plastic, not weighted at all. The "0" letter wasn't even black, it had a blue tint to it. I was disappointed with them and immediately took them off. Going to stick to debadged.

Can anyone recommend a good choice for smoked side markers?

The problem with interior parts is that they have small corners and they get handled a lot. I plastidipped my console last year and it's peeling now, especially in the back close to the middle seat. The finish did last where the handbrake is, around the cupholders, etc. I might just redo it, at $5 a can it's not an expensive endeavor.

I gave my center console 4 days. Still nicked and started to peel during install.

I'm going to try Krylon satin black on it.

So, bad news yesterday. I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place. Got new Michelin PSSs on the car. Town Fair Tire couldn't finish the front alignment (which is definitely needed quite badly) because of frozen tie rods - and if they use a torch to loosen them they can't cover a broken tie rod and I'd have to pay to have my car towed to BMW Peabody. Called BMW Peabody - just to have them use a torch is $135. If they break a rod, which they said is very likely, their quoted price for parts is $400 (stupid, I can get them for 160 on the web), plus labor for a total of $800. Also, I'm leaving for school (two hours of highway driving) on sunday. Can't get parts in that quickly, and I barely have the means to perform such a change myself. What the hell do I do?

I would be able to redeem my free alignment they didn't finish out there, but I'd probably prefer to change the tie rod myself instead of spending $800 on it and I can't do that out at school. Unless - epiphany - maybe tony could help me out.

They have to use a torch on my tie rods everyone I get an alignment. Never had a tie rod break, or heard of one breaking.

when they said they could break I was like "ok.. never heard of that." I know evan pretty much took a sledge hammer to his and they were fine. I just looked at mine and the way the guy described them I pictured a super fragile rusted-to-shit tie rod. They barely had that much rust on them. I bet if the guy torched them they'd be fine.

The worst part though, Dane, is that I called BMW Peabody to ask what they could do to help and they said if I brought it to BMW to loosen the bolts they would probably break the tie rods and I'd have to get new tie rods.

So should I just bring it back into Town Fair Tire and have them do the alignment? When I was at TFT I called my mechanic friend and he too said just have them do it - "They'd have to really not know what they're doing to screw that up." Is it really not as big of a risk (breaking the tie rods) as I think?
