View Full Version : What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2
I gave people working at my local dealer and customers their "ZHP" fix....although most of the customers didn't know what a ZHP was. I always find it amusing talking to the sales staff and watching customers walk by and just stare at the clean Imola ZHP in the dealer lot.....:drool I look at the new offerings and somehow they don't touch me the same way as my Imola touches me...;)
Not sure it is the color as much as it is the design. I do like the newer 5 series, but don't love it. The LCI E90 is now near the top of my list after seeing the latest offerings.

I did my first cooling system refresh and replaced the plastic water pump and power steering pulleys with aluminum ones. New belts and idler and tensioner pulleys too. I got the OEM refresh kit from Tischer and the pulleys from ECS tuning.
The car has 71,000 miles and it was all original. I was actually surprised at how good everything still looked. At least now I don't have to worry about it for another 60k. These hot Texas summers can be hard on cars and I definitely didn't want to get stuck on the side of the road spewing coolant.
Nice. I finished mine today too. :)
One thing I noticed when doing my cooling system stuff is I should have used anti seize on the water pump pulley (aluminum ECS one) because mine is pretty much a part of the water pump now.
Too much torque? They don't need much

I love it when my Imola touches me too. There was a random IR M3 a few blocks up last week, it took my breath away every day I passed it. I knew it was there, but it still star struck me everyday (3-4 days in a row).

Sean....as for me, I know my next BMW will be an E60 ///M. I have plenty of time in which to choose my next beast (going to get my daughter through college first)...I blame this on Kris (S85FTW) because after riding in his beast I could never get the sound of that S85 out of my mind....and that Interlagos Blue....I know this would complete my stable....having an ///M5 Interlagos Blue...:)

Interesting. I didn't find it terrible to get apart and my old water pump was rusty. Pulley was still in great shape though. New water pump is all shiny. :)

I wish I had thought of anti-seize. My plastic one was stuck on there pretty good and I had to lever it off. Maybe I'll get a wild hair up my ass in the next year or so and yank them off before they are frozen and lube them up. Right now I'm just glad to be done!

It is weird seeing only one tip. What exhaust is that?
It's a borla exhaust that was installed by the previous owner. I was thinking about changing it for a dual borla tip, but the look of it has really started to grow on me :)

check the five fuses that are under the cover in the DME box - the are the master control for engine functions (OVER THE fuse block fuses)
Remove rear seat cushion, on passenger side remove the round cover on fuel pump and listen for priming when you turn the key on...if no prime, check for 12v...if 12v - then fuel pump dead...it is a somewhat common issue on all cars and E46s in general
So the pump has 12v and is priming the line.
I bought 2 gal of 92oct and just filled her up. Somehow I need to force all of the denser water out of the bottom of the tank where its sucking from. Would removing the feed line from the filter and priming the line a few times exponge a good bit of the water?

Just went to Advance and bought some Heet gasline antifreeze remover.
Dumped the whole bottle in the tank and jumped around on the trunk to mix it up. Hope this shit works.

check the fuse for the injectors - bleed the fuel rail - there is a Schrader valve fitting (like a air valve on wheel). Press it in while holding towel over it...verify fuel pressure
bleed a few times (in between priming the pump) see if this removes air/water/etc from line
If you have fuel pressure at the valve and still no fuel at ignition - then injectors not doing their job

It sat with about 3/8 full tank for over 4 months. I was thinking that there might have been some water that formed on the inside of the tank.
I have been letting it sit and mix for the past two hours. Hopefully that gets rid of any and all H2O in the tank.
I will be checking the fuse and checking the rail for pressure.

One of the injectors fell out of the rail when I removed it. It was promptly reconnected when I realized the gas was spilling all down the block and onto the asphalt.

Checked the 30 amp fuse in the DME box for the fuel injectors. Checks out working.
Bled the fuel rail. Fuel came out and was verified three seperate occasions. Priming and bleeding. The will start with some starting spray. Spark is good. The pump is good. That just leaves faulty injector wiring.
Somehow they are not being energized.
The project continues.

could it be the clutch throwout bearing instead of the input shaft bearing? On the other hand, when that throwout bearing failed on my car, it made the noise only when you pushed the clutch all the way in.

Exactly :( That's all I've been reading about it. I can't see a single DIY on this job either, and it also requires dropping the transmission....so might as well do my clutch if I have to do that. And I definitely don't have the tools for a clutch job.

I bought a subwoofer, amp, and all the accessories and what not. I plan to retain the stock head unit and all of my trunk space. I purchased a square 10 inch sub that will go behind the rear seat arm rest in the center where the ski pass thru area is. The amp will go probably underneath it in the storage area that tourings have.
All said and done for about $120. Everything is brand new too :fistpump

Wish I'd done the CDV ages ago- wow. Only problem is that the throttle delay now is much more awkward, so I'm starting to drool over a sprint booster. Ah the cost of 'free' upgrades...
Stigissimo
07-31-2013, 09:09 AM
mmm sprint booster. In the mean time, you could try being a little more aggressive on the throttle. All a sprint booster does is modify the output of the pedal so that you reach full throttle sooner - so really all it is doing is tricking the computer into thinking that you're pressing the pedal further than you really are. I don't seem to notice and significant throttle lag in my car anymore after becoming a little more comfortably aggressive with it - maybe I'm just used to the car.

yes, FTP is technically a high beam

When I turn my fogs on and then use FTP or high beam position, they stay on and no longer turn off. This is beneficial for the fog light hid retrofit. I was blowing fuses prior to the coding.

Very cool. And yes, it seems like it would be a lot of wear/tear on the fogs every time you FTP'd (although that doesn't work so much here in SoCal so it's kinda pointless). Maybe more so on the back roads.
Was wondering why my car seemed to lean to one side at work when I park...
Turns out to be a combination of my parking brake needing to be adjusted and a slight slope of the parking lot :rofl
I need to take my rear wheels off this weekend to diagnose a brake vibration issue, so I'll take a look at the springs while I am in there. Supposedly the very bottom of the spring has a tendency to break on these cars.

My wife works for the State of Texas. She gets paid 56.5 cents per mile. Sounds like the private sector pays more. You may want to check the IRS website for the rate used in the tax forms.

Was preparing for Autocross tomorrow, and put the car up to do an oil change- finding a huge amount of oil on the underside of the car. I steam cleaned and pressure washed the engine and undercarriage, did the oil change with a new oil level sensor(mine has failed)..
I am 3 quarts low from 3 weeks ago when I topped off with less than a quart lost in 5k miles...
Let the car run with the engine clean, and have a real good leak at my oil filter housing, so I guess it's time for a new gasket... FML, I don't have time for this right now. http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/08/04/zedupyzu.jpg

My opinion is the stock jack can be safe enough when changing brake pads if you avoid putting any hands, feet, heads or legs under the brake rotor or any other part that could come crashing down on the ground. Assume the jack might fail at any moment and make sure no body parts will be hit by the falling car--don't put your head under the fender either. For added safety, slide the wheel under the side of the car behind the jack (for front brakes) or in front of the jack (for rear brakes). I have worked on brakes this way in a parking lot (with a floor jack, not the stock jack).
At the track I see people putting one jack stand under the car as backup when they work under a car supported by just a floor jack. Not sure that's entirely safe but it's safer than using just a jack with no backup.
I haven't had a jack actually fail, but I've had the car fall off the jack two times. Once because it was on a slope and the parking brake was not engaged (and opposite side wheels not chocked). 2nd time jack was not centered under the jack pad and it slipped off. Now whenever I lift the car, I either engage the parking brake or chock an opposite side wheel, or both.
@alexandre: My current and last company had the official mileage reimbursement rate built into the expense reporting system. You enter how many miles you drove and it multiplies it by the company's approved rate, which for me today is also 56.5 cents/mile, just like for Fredo's wife. Maybe that's what the IRS has approved for 2013?

That OFHG is a bear. Took me most of the day when I did mine.

I just like the look of real CF like the one Charlie posted the other day. I notice Dinoc has the matte look which is good when you have more of it I would think. I've never seen it in person so I can't offer a real opinion.

Thanks! Not sure if you can clear the Di-Noc. I went with the Matte Black but there is a Gloss Black. The Matte Black does have a sheen to it, doesn't come out very good in the photos. I also did my truck interior with the same stuff. Maybe these photos will give you an idea.

Your truck interior looks so much better after. I can see how the sheen would be very similar to the sheen of the cube already in the car so not sure the glossy one would fit in. :thumbsup

My wife works for the State of Texas. She gets paid 56.5 cents per mile. Sounds like the private sector pays more. You may want to check the IRS website for the rate used in the tax forms.
My company offered 56c as well, so it seems like it's the going rate. Thanks for the input!

The bimmian mount goes under your trim, so sometimes the trim sticks out some. Not too big a deal for some, it drives others crazy. My trim sits somewhat flush but sometimes pops out a little.

Nice article, but that guy needs to work on his car some more. His fog lights are mounted wrong and will shake a lot because the bumper on that car is more for looks than an actual strong structure to support something. It wouldn't hurt to get new stickers for the center caps on his wheels either. Some other minor things I noticed, but overall it looks like a good car.

Yeah... they're nothing special, but still way better than the stock 320i seats.
I actually got a pair of manual seats from an '02-'03 WRX, but there will require much welding to make them work. Either way, they cost me $32 for the pair and are way more comfortable (plus being many hundreds of dollars cheaper) than the real E21 Recaro's. Reupholstery will come eventually with E24 rear bucket mod done in the same style...
but a 6cyl swap should be main priority ;)
EDIT: aforementioned WRX seats

Cleaned the garage so the ZHP has a new home. Unfortunately, I could not wash it due to crap weather... I also took the ridiculous "Virginia Tech" stickers off of the rear window (sorry Chris). I haven't replaced it with anything yet, but I did add a little pirate pride to the side...

Think he meant ridiculous to an ECSU grad to be sporting VaTech stickers. Let's put it in perspective --- if I put a Semper Fi sticker on your IR, how long will it last? Or JW, would he sport a Citadel sticker? Personally, I won't buy a car if its Clemson owned, just a personal pet peeve.

I spoke to the tech at my dealer and he gave me a length of the black goo rope that they use. Sorry for the technical description, but that seems about the best way to describe it. I had expected a tube of adhesive, but they get it on a spool with 6 parallel strips applied to a waxy paper.

It scared me like hell at first.. But I didn't have much to lose. The PO reckoned my car needed a full respray, so I just threw my hands in air and said "Let's do this". It is turning out really nice, still some orange peel but not much and all the defects and scratches are GONE! It is definitely a lot of work but I am very happy with the results. Treated her to a classic "Two "Bucket" (plus an extra bucket for the wheels, plus a pressure washer, plus a foam lance, plus my Walmart Turtle Wax car vac to blow out the seams, which does a surprisingly good job) wash. Been a long time since the warm fuzzy "clean Imola" feeling. I think it adds 10 to 12 hp.
Also removed the thumping Harmon Kardon subs and did the "tennis ball mod" to the rear deck, which at first blush, seems remarkably effective in eliminating the dreaded rear deck rattle.

Replaced a window regulator on my e90. I ordered the part online ($108 at getBMWparts.com after $10 coupon). Then, I asked a body shop to install it. The labor was $40. Total cost = $148.
I asked for an estimate at two Indies: $300 including labor and parts. So, I saved $152 ... not bad at all for a non-DIY guy. :biggrin

Wow, lots of catching up in here to do; I've been somewhat "MIA" for nearly a week.
Sunday - Flat tire, bad valve stem on a wheel that was only 2 years old, hope this doesn't mean I got a batch of bad ones.
Monday - Had the bad valve stem replaced, $15.
Today - Dead battery, I hadn't driven the car in over a week and a few days ago I noticed the "clown nose" flashing oddly, I intended to look up the reason for the odd flashing but alcohol got in the way and I forgot.
Tomorrow - Maybe I'll give her a wash.

I live in the smog state of Cali... it has to be approved. I could do S52... but for that much money I might as well do M20 stroker. Unfortunately for me it's a lot more involved when you live here to do a legal swap because of all the assorted parts that get scrutinized, which is my plan with this project.

The S50 and M50 use all the same parts to swap... plus, isn't the law that if the engine is NEWER than the model year it's going into then it's fine? OBD-I to OBD-I shouldn't be an issue, right?
