Well, Indy moved it forward when he got in ( he's much shorter than me ) and that tripped it. He reset it, but it came back again this morning.

Mmm....that's weird. Take it back and have him give you the code. That will tell you if it's the seat belt tensioner, switch, etc...
Washed, detail spray, carnauba wax, cleaned out the inside. It's looking goooooooooooood :) 2 hour endeavor, but it's always so fun to do. Can't wait to get an orbital buffer, clay bar, and really detail the car this summer.

30% chance of rain but I still washed the car today...
The front wheels get dirty so fast, the brake pads are fairly new but I'm really contemplating replacing them with something that does not produce a lot of brake dust.
I also detailed the interior. However I have to wait for an extra hot day to condition (Leatherique) the seats, so I'll do that on Tuesday when it's 93 degrees.

My rears are okay but the friends get filthy in only a day or two... A week and the wheels are completely brown...
I didn't take any before photos but I will later this week.
Any suggestions on low brake dust pads that don't sacrifice braking performance?
I did some searching and I keep seeing Axxis pads recommended.

I've been using StopTech slotted & drilled rotors with Centirx ceramic pads on all of our BMWs and we've had maybe a couple Roundel cars over the last 5 years (LOL, more like 15), great stopping power and low low dust. In fact had the wife's x5 brakes done under warranty at the dealer a couple months ago and as soon as I got it home I changed the pads to Centrix ceramics. My opinion, you need the S&D rotors to get the ceramics to bite well, but we tend to brake a bit more aggressively in my family, especially my boss (wife) does. I get my brake kits from a member here, Ray (SmileyZ) hit him up and he'll take care of you. His website is brakeyourself.com but Ray beats the heck out of those price for Mafia members.

I've known Ray for years, I'll hit him up and order some new pads. My car had slotted rotors, hopefully that's enough... ;)

I got the same wheel wax 2 years ago. Didn't have chance to use it until last week. Since it was stored in my hot garage (TX), half of it was gone ! Other than that, I'm very happy with the results.

I was reading reviews on A few different wheel waxes and they said it makes the wheels look puurrty but doesn't help keep brake dust off. Is this true?

It will help when washing, i.e. easier to take off. I've never heard that it keeps dust off the wheel, though.

It was a 5.0, and he was lowered on Koni Yellows. K&N cold air intake and a Flowmaster rear section. It sounded amazing and was crazy fast down the main straight of the course. But I must have caught him in the corners. ///M suspension FTW!! :headbang

kinda like this but with a yellow high beam reflector, and no city light above the low beam lens since the set I bought are US not Euro

Not the most glamorous accessory on the list, but these giant "floor condoms" from WeatherTech are definitely the height of protective technology. I'm pretty sure the passenger side one could double as a nice beverage cooler - looks like it will hold a case and a half + a bag of ice.
And I'm not suggesting its a little warm and muggy in Kansas City today, but when you end up drenched in sweat from installing two floor mats, either the heat index is getting up there, or you should be worried about malaria, or some similar plague

I didn't take pics during the process because of the quickly fading light outside. I will, however, link you to my other DIY, PlastiDipping your trim, as the process is similar. I will include extra steps since we're using paint this time around, which requires more prep.
Pics to come of the final product...

Got her back in the garage last night, garage door spring broke last Thursday night. I was set on paying someone to install them, but after watching a few "good" video's, I realized I could take my time and do it myself. Something satisfying about doing a job yourself and saving $$, I'm sure it would have been at least $250 if I had called a garage door company. $85 shipped for the parts and I did it myself.

Amazing! I grew up in a very modest income household, we always fixed things ourselves (or attempted to). I didn't know it until I was older, but my parents basically "flipped" a house as we lived in it, then did a second one after I had already moved out (but I still helped). I flipped my first house as well, and bought my current house in mid-flip.

Got my baby out the body shop today.
Had my bumper and headlights realigned because they were not even. Now they are. (poor repair from PO body shop)
Passenger side strut tower was mushroomed about 20-40%. Fixed
Had a developing crack in the passenger fender well. I believe it was caused by the incident it was in. Re-welded, reinforced, and sealed. Fixed.
Had strut tower reinforcement plates installed on both struts.
Also had new splash guard installed because the other one was broken.
Set me back $495, but honestly every penny was worth it.

- Rear bumper valance wrapped.
- Headlight bezel wrapped.
- Lamin-x headlights
- Small ZHP emblems installer.
- Bimmian mobile device mount installed.
* I'm not sure if I'm keeping the emblems, perhaps I should have gotten bigger ones so I could out them on the left. What do you all think?
* I'm pretty happy with the rear bumper valance and head light bezels. It's a bit ricey but it's subtle. Lol

Tie rods almost always require heat to bust them loose (Mine do anyways. Assume may be the same for some folks). I have no knowledge of a special tool for alignment on rear.

The C's are the easiest. I believe depending on the year, the process might be a little different. Mine is a 2004 so, for the C's, just pop out the light with a flat head screw driver. You need to kind of dig in there to get it to pop out. Having a 2nd flat head handy is helpful too. Once it is out, unplug light. Older models I think there is a 25torx holding it in. Mine didn't. Use the open hole as a way to grab the panel and there are two clips at the top you will pop out. Then the rest just pulls out. For the A's, you will remove that little strip on the pillar with a flat head. Then there will be 3x 25torx screws that need to be taken out. They are in an annoying angle so be patient. Once you remove the screws, the rest will just pop and slide out. I used Krylon Easy Tack adhesive. Seem to work perfect. You have to time when you stick the fabric back because if to soon it won't stick because it is too wet and if to late it wont stick because it dried up. So about 15-30 seconds seems to work best. The trick is to get it to stick and spread evenly across the pillar. It is forgiven so don't worry about messing up. Also applying in small like 2-3 sq. inch sections seemed to work best for me.

They are Breyton race GTR I don't blame the manufacturer though. I blame the state of NJ. The roads around Berlin NJ are the worst I've seen in a long time. We hit some kind of major dip/hole in the road on I95 on the way down to Bimmerfest and I think that finished it off.
When I opened the runk to pull the spare is was full of water... WTF?
Not the scuffed one, this is the left front. Breyton GT-S. Thankful for no accident, we were movin' when Rob made an emergency pull over.

Stu....you're a perfectionist... it shows in what you have done to all your cars. There's nothing wrong with what you have been doing and for those who are jealous, so be it. As for myself, I think you have taken your cars to the next level and have shown all of us just how far we all can take our cars. :thumbsup
There will always be someone who is jealous because they can't do what you are doing... that's life. At one point I was also feeling the same way regarding updating my project threads and decided to continue to post updates to my project threads in spite of the petty jealousy of a few....please don't stop updating your threads! If anything, what you have done to your car inspires me to do more to my cars....
Yes, there are many who just say that they're jealous but really don't mean it....there's nothing wrong with that. Just enjoy modding Stu and keep showing us how it's done! :thumbsup

Not the case here, I really enjoy your updates. I hope your talking about the d-bag forum and not this one, and sadly I can really see where you would start to feel that way. That forum is getting younger and younger as e46's get less and less expensive. I seem to spend less and less time on it, and I'm much happier over here.
I think my better half and I will be getting an x5 M (used of course) in a few years (need to sell one of our properties), I really do enjoy your updates and am really curious to see if you find out how to make the LED headlamps fully functional. Then again, we'll probably just be lazy and look for one with them already. It won't be my DD, so I don't want to hear about things not fully working on something we just purchased. My e46 is bad enough "your washer fluid light and your oil light are on." I know, I'll get to it later.

Stu.... I expect to see updates on your project threads...:) What you said is why you should do your mods...because you're doing it for yourself. You're not trying to impress anyone or have their approval of what you are doing to your cars. I get it :)
Regarding your mods...damn bro!!! You continue to amaze me with what you're doing. Some mods I may not necessarily go for but who cares? As long as you're happy with them, that's all it counts! On the most part, they're spot on with what I would love to do with my cars.... choice of wheels, brakes, rotors, performance.... I just don't have the disposable cash or connections to do all of this but in time I'll get there....it just may take me a little longer but I'm okay with this....
At least I have something to look forward to :thumbsup

Suddenly, knowing that you can do LED headlight retrofits to newer cars, my E46 seem old. Super Jelly, excellent job sir.
Do you think its impossible to think there will be this type of mod for our old e46's in the future? I was just examining the picture Stu posted and it doesn't look too far off from the size (and shape) of our projectors. I think someone could make a killing being the first to offer a retrofit kit for ours (and other) BMW's. Now that I've pulled mine completely apart to replace an ignitor (and swapped to ZKW lenses while I was in there) I would give it a go if the kit was quality and looked right (OEM'ish, not obviously aftermarket).

These past few days, I've had to drive the ///M the 60 miles round trip to work. The bugs on my bumper and windshield are crazy. Replaced my completely broken dead pedal with Charlie's help. Also attempted to swap out my armrest that Stuart was so kind to give to me at the Reunion, but found that the rear bolt for it is somehow stuck inside the hole and can't put the new armest back in. So, I guess I have made up my mind prematurely and decided to get an armrest delete because I don't want to deal with crap like this. My hand at this was forced when the retaining section for the hazard light switch broke, so I can no longer mount that either. I will now have to buy a new console as well. :mad
I might change my mind between now and time to order, so we'll see.
I vote for the armrest delete kit.

Forgot to say,
Sorry to say I seriously doubt anybody will bother making a retrofit kit for E46. The car is too old, and remember; the X5 has a newer model that has an available control unit setup for it straight from BMW. Think of all the retrofitting/programming/whatever that would be required to make it work on an older car that doesn't even have adaptive functions (the vast majority at least). It would probably also be prohibitively expensive, and not many would buy it. A killing is definitely not what the vendor would make, that's for sure. :(
I would jump on it in a heartbeat if this was to happen, but I won't be holding my breath.

Good points, by adaptive are you talking about side to side or just up and down (leveling)? It wouldn't have to move side to side, our HID's we have don't do that now, but would definitely need to be able to level itself. I dunno, I don't think its too far of a stretch to think that someone could come up with a plug and play kit to work with current sensors already in the car for leveling HID's. I guess time will tell, but your probably right, these cars are old and every year there are fewer and fewer of them left. We can dream, for now, though...

I'm mainly referring to the difficulty of adapting "adaptive" LED lights, the kind that do the same things as the X5 one. The one on the X5 is very advanced; it doesnt just turn side to side with the wheel, it also adjusts for oncoming traffic and moves the light beam according to the car in front so you could keep the high beams on without blinding the cars in front. It's extremely clever.
If an LED kit was released without this functionality, I wouldnt bother with it as this is the coolest feature of the adaptive LEDs.

Gotcha, I was under the impression that that part of the "adaptive" feature has not been enabled in the US due to some really old stupid DOT laws. As far as I know, those (completely awesome) features only work across the pond. This doesn't mean that Stu (and others) couldn't find a way to hack or reprogram their vehicle to enable those features. But that is over my head, I haven't yet even dug into reprograming my car, I don't know if the "new" BMW's are the same, similar, or completely different.
I did watch those video's a while back, pretty amazing how it can dim for a car in front of you and still have brights on each side of that car. I don't know though, I might still be interested without this capability just for the additional light output.

I doubt that's possible with our cars. A system like that will require some sort of input that is monitoring the light in front of the cars, and as far as I know, the LCM doesn't receive any input like that. The auto-dimming mirror looks out front and back, but the manual states that front light sensor is merely for helping discern between daylight, headlights, and street lights so that the mirror can dim more accurately. I would not imagine that this information is passed to the LCM.
The hardware is seemingly there, but the programming likely isn't.
That can also be a sign of impending fuel pump failure...
This is what I am worried about as well, but I do not have any other fuel pump signs other than a 1/3-second hestitation right before it starts in the morning. From what I have read, this could be more indicative of an intake cam position sensor.

Yes, it is quite disappointing... Great discussion though, none-the-less, and who knows, it might be as simple as re-coding it to "on" from "off." Lets hope so!

Gotcha, yeah, I don't think that would ever work on our cars, but perhaps those with newer BMW's can enable it at some point in the future. But just swapping out HID for LED, so don't see how that wouldn't be possible at some point in the future for our cars.

Just saw some of my C-pillar fabric also fell down. Guess some spray adhesive is in my future.
Last night replaced spring in tensioner spring for lower timing chain. New one was about 1.5mm (maybe 2mm) longer than old one. Can't tell yet if it reduces chain noise. Normally I didn't notice any chain noise, but Sunday night after 2 track days and a 200-mile drive home, the chain or cams were making a clattering racket.

Car is at 123,775 miles. The spark plugs are OEM BMW Branded NGK BKR6EQUP. Replaced with the same brand from Autozone.
The rust is indeed from the water that entered through the vents in the hood when the cabin filter was left out during a big storm. Wiped the boots off with WD40 and plugged everything in.
This is only the first step to diagnosing the car's no start. Next up is the Fuel Pump. Probably going to get an M3 pump. Future tuning for a 5 bar fuel system. If the car doesn't start after replacing the pump then it will be going back to stock and chalking it up to a wiring issue. Though we haven't found any obvious faults in the wiring...I have a sneaking feeling that it's a relay difference or something dumb.

Boot five was normal. I have no idea when any maintenance was completed. Bought the car with no records. But I have been taking care of it when it comes around. I need an oil change I'm sure by now. But the car has been fine. Just thought this would be a 6/10 on the difficulty scale...turns out its an 11. If the car doesn't fire its going back to MS42 EU2 management. The headers I bought are going in and the custom exhaust I want is gonna be installed.
But before all of this I need to sort out the mechanicals like my suspension.

I will be using Hella 160 (chrome back) auxiliary driving lamps, not gonna use "fog lamps"

A pillars = pillars by front windshield with little strips.
B pillars = pillars where the seat belt is attached to the side.
C pillars = pillars on rear, by rear windshield. Pillar C has a light in it.
Thanks for the info. Took the C Pillars out today and found my rattle I've had for two years!

Starter fluid was the trick...so that means there is a spark! No I have to diagnose my car as having a fuel delivery issue. Hmmm.

Video works fine. Progress!
I figure if the fuel pump failed, then it wouldn't even start. Can you keep it going if you hold down the throttle? In the video I can see your RPM's falling and then the engine cuts off. Is that because you take your foot off the throttle? Or because it just won't deliver fuel?

The engine only started because of the Starter Fluid. This test determined that it was fuel related and not spark. Now I have to find out how the injectors are functioning. If filling up the tank with some new gas and adding some fuel additive doesn't work then it's off to diagnose the new problem.

I wonder if the timing of the fuel being released is a little off or something like that. Different liter motor has different timing in the fuel release? :shrug
This is pretty far out of my element, just throwing darts at a wall here.
Glad to hear that it is finally running, and that you have been able to narrow down your problem.

Yeah now that I can get it to turn over and fire, I will have to plug it into the computer and get a data log. That's a great thought, Rob. Sounds like a reasonable stab at the issue. Very well could be it, who knows.

I explained this on e46fanatics to Hornung, but it seems to have gone down (for me at least) so I might as well explain it here too.
The displacement shouldn't make a difference as far as "synchronisation" goes. It is the angular position of cylinder, and not the linear position that matters for fuel injection, spark, etc... (within reason -- when you're trying to squeeze every last horse power out, linear position matters, but for simply getting the engine running, it's not going to make a difference). The pistons in any I6 will reach TDC and BDC at the same angles. The linear distance traveled/work done by the engine with a longer stroke will be greater than that of a smaller stroke, but as long as the cylinders are offset by 120º to each other, the timing of the pulses will be identical for a given RPM.
This picture should explain what I mean
Short Stroke vs Long Stroke

check the five fuses that are under the cover in the DME box - the are the master control for engine functions (OVER THE fuse block fuses)
Remove rear seat cushion, on passenger side remove the round cover on fuel pump and listen for priming when you turn the key on...if no prime, check for 12v...if 12v - then fuel pump dead...it is a somewhat common issue on all cars and E46s in general

Yup, mine died a few years back, I would guess I was at about 110k. I had gotten into the (bad) habit of letting the car get to basically 0 miles and filling her up. Some people think that this makes the fuel pump work harder and can cause premature failure.
If you have power and are not hearing the fuel pump work, try lightly tapping either the pump itself or the tank from underneath the car. After having mine towed to the shop on a roll-back an ex friend of mine did this (slapped the fuel tank under the car 2-3 times) and the car fired right up and he drove it into the shop. Might (or might not have) saved me a tow if I had known that.

EDIT: Oh wow, now I see what you are talking about, looked fine on my 13" MBP, looks like crap on this ~27" work monitor. Do all of my pics look like crap then? lol

Yeah its been sitting for so long that I'm almost certain that the gas has been compromised. Biggest fear is that the pump has siezed. It has 3/8 tank currently. Worst case scenario I get a new M3 fuel pump. System runs at 5 bar so I can squeeze some power out of it with tunng.
Thanks for the tips guys. I'm stuck at work and I want nothjng more than to race home and tinker!! So giddy.

I did my first cooling system refresh and replaced the plastic water pump and power steering pulleys with aluminum ones. New belts and idler and tensioner pulleys too. I got the OEM refresh kit from Tischer and the pulleys from ECS tuning.
The car has 71,000 miles and it was all original. I was actually surprised at how good everything still looked. At least now I don't have to worry about it for another 60k. These hot Texas summers can be hard on cars and I definitely didn't want to get stuck on the side of the road spewing coolant.

I gave people working at my local dealer and customers their "ZHP" fix....although most of the customers didn't know what a ZHP was. I always find it amusing talking to the sales staff and watching customers walk by and just stare at the clean Imola ZHP in the dealer lot.....:drool I look at the new offerings and somehow they don't touch me the same way as my Imola touches me...;)
One thing I noticed when doing my cooling system stuff is I should have used anti seize on the water pump pulley (aluminum ECS one) because mine is pretty much a part of the water pump now.
