What's involved in that?

connecting a wire to pin 40 on the Mk60 and running that wire through the firewall then connect the other end of the wire to pin2 on the button panel connector at the center console. Fortunately for me, Chad had spare wires with the rubber end to seal against moisture and Tony knew exactly how to do this retrofit. Tony was over a few hours tonight and we got this retrofit done and I got to see his Eonon install. All in all a total win :thumbsup

SO JEALOUS! WANT!!

----------------------

Tonight I got my bad ignitor swapped out. I decided that since I was already going to be in there to go ahead and do the ZKW lens swap (I have AL headlights, Woot for no burned bowls!). I also decided that while I was in there already, to go ahead and paint the HID shroud (and the remaining chrome in the headlight) black. I had done the "flash to pass" (AKA high-beam on cars without bi-exnon) YEARS ago and have loved the look, this just takes it up another notch! Now I have to get my corners tinted because they are the only chrome on the front of the car.

Found this on my door :facepalm Must have been one of the customers at work... Even had the thoughtfulness of brushing the area away to see what kind of work they had done, left no note.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7434/9124188828_7e3646707c_b.jpg

So I used that as an excuse to do a quick polish to diminish the scratches (wouldn't come out completely) there and some other minor areas. Topped off with some sealant too. Result.

Tony will be posting a DIY on this in the future, hopefully with pics so anyone can do this retrofit. :thumbsup

What puzzles me is that on "other" forums, members have done this retrofit but never divulged how they actually went about doing this. One of many things I have found frustrating.

Good part about this forum is that members are more willing to help each other out to get mods/retrofits completed on their cars. I find its better to "share" information and help others rather than not share it. If not for other forum members here... I wouldn't have gotten the following:

– trifecta lighting (thanks BP!)
– my Eagle Eye tails sorted out (thanks Tony!)
– my carbon fiber MTec II rear diffuser (thanks Rando!)
– my sport button mod (thanks Rando and William!)
– my Sprint Booster at 50% off retail price (thanks Gary!)
– my Alcantara front seat covers at substantial discount (thanks Jon!)
– my TPMS retrofit (thanks Chad and Tony!)
– can't forget the carbon fiber engine covers from Ben and carbon fiber e–brake handle from Ry!!! :)

But then I most likely wouldn't have taken care of fellow forum members if not for this site as well..
– entire silver cube trim (passed to az3579 for free)
– brand new never used BMW Assist rear view mirror (passed to Newjack for free)
– my Beyern Mesh wheels @ serious low Mafia price (tnhl1989)
– Euro LCM w/ sw4.5 to Dane

So my point is that here, we are supposed to help each other out and, for the most part, this is the norm here on the Mafia forum. This is what makes our forum unique. Anyway I had to put all of this out... :)

Getting back on topic, you will have all the required info on how to retrofit TPMS. I can tell you it's really not too difficult to do, that's the best part! :thumbsup

Two days ago Evan and I traded off buffing the main surfaces of my car: the boot lid, bonnet, and roof. Equipment: Porter Cable 7424 DA polisher, harbor freight buffer pads (believe it or not they work pretty well!) and Meguiar's 105. Down the road when I get the chance I'll do the other panels and maybe re-do the three panels that I've already buffed and literally spend all day doing it to make it poifect.

You'll need the ZKW lenses from theretrofitsource.com, $40. And some time, here is the video I used to aid in the process.

http://youtu.be/2Lcup1PYTC0

It might seem a little overwhelming at first, but it was actually pretty straight forward and not very difficult. Just a little time consuming, I had a bad ignitor so I had to get in there to change it anyway and figured I'd swap the lenses while I was at. Some people have said they get a better cut-off line by shimming between the lens housing and the bulb bowl, but mine were ridiculously sharp (IMO) without shimming so I just put her back together and called it good.

Here is a pic from 45'. Its not that crisp here, but still pretty good for 45', also notice the line on the CR-V to the left. I'll try to get one from 25' (the distance they say you should use to aim your headlights) tonight or soon.

The issue I found is that I bought the home link because I do not have an opener for my garage. Just the one inside and a key pad outside.

But in order to program the home link you need a wireless opener......... looks like I'm buying a cheap one so I can get this programmed. Lol

You're welcome. I can't imagine that they would give you any problems with exchanging them for the correct ones. They must have been referring to something else in your order.

Update on this incase you, or anyone else, cares. Karl at ECS took care of everything, it was quite painless actually. I went ahead and put the new CA's on my credit card to get that order started, and I'm shipping back the incorrect ones tomorrow. The new order has $0 in shipping charges and they were kind enough to send me a UPS return label to send the wrong ones back. Considering I am at least 1/2 (if not more) at fault for ordering the wrong CA's, I'm blown away that they are kindly taking care of the mistake all on their own dollar(s).

----------------

Today I nearly cried, I have owned my car since 5/25/2006 and when I was just putting a box in the car a few minutes ago I spotted not one, but two door dings on the car. 7 years, nearly 90k miles, zero door dings, until today (or whenever they happened, they were not there when I dropped the car off at BMW a few weeks back for a new windshield, they have a PDR guy that inspects all of the incoming cars and offers to fix any dings while they are being serviced or worked on). I am ALWAYS careful with where I park, I have no idea when/where this could have happened. Sad day, but I think/hope they are in spots that should be easy to get out.

HOW CAN PEOPLE DO THAT (damage someone else's property, and not say anything) AND LIVE WITH THEMSELVES?!

Day 2 of "Detail Fest 2013". All of these "easy to use" products are great, but when you throw them all together, it's a hell of a lot of work. But is sure makes a difference. I'm very pleased with the results. The steps I used.

Wash - used Dawn to strip old finish. Some say this is unnecessary.

Clay - used the kit you get free from DI when you spend a ton of money. Blue fine clay and Poor Boy's detail spray. Worked good.

Meguiars 105 - used yellow pad on the Griot's.

Meguiars 205 - Blue pad.

Chemical Guys EZ-Creme 2 Sealant - black pad. Really made a difference in hiding imperfections, and evening out a nice glossy finish.

Chemical Guys Jetseal 109 - applied with black pad/hand applicator. Buffed with microfiber towel.

If I feel really motivated tomorrow, maybe another coat of JetSeal. Also have Chem Guys XXX Hard Core paste wax. Maybe later. I've heard mixed reviews

Ah yes, freshly cared for Imola. You'll find yourself staring at it for abnormal amounts of time! One thing I noticed is that you said you still had some micro-marring after the M205 - that might be a function of using the blue pad which might not cut enough to even out the finish. Maybe try white? That's typically what I'll use.

Great work!!!!

Got new sneakers for the car a couple of days ago - Bridgestone Potenza S04 Pole Position in the stock sizes. Finally some real tires! Very impressed with them so far, drove through a torrential downpour yesterday at 100-120km/h with perfect stability when others were pulling over because of the standing water - car felt very stable. Today I threw the car into some corners pretty hard and it stuck like glue. Very nice steering response, too. Was originally planning to get the MPSS (the S04s were the same price) but got a smokin' deal on the S04s and couldn't justify the increased cost for the MPSS.

Also put my new EVO wiper blades on just in time for yesterday's storm, they worked great - much better than the Michelin Stealth blades I put on a couple of months ago when I bought the car.

Thanks! And I appreciate the suggestion, as I'm pretty new at this. I was nervous about the whole cutting process. I did make a second pass at a couple areas, which cleaned them up a lot, so you're probably spot on, and I needed to attack it a little more aggressively.

Good and the bad. Good: The zhp has a new Rear Differential Carrier Bushing. No more clunk!! Bad: I'm not too happy with the redline tranny fluid I put in about 5k miles ago. The car has just recently started getting harder to shift into gear, but only when stopped. Thinking I may switch it out to motul.

That is one job that requires a professional. A knuckle buster. I already have a new bushing. The OE bushing has a slight leak. My mechanic has the facility and tools to get this done in his home garage. Waiting for the right time to have him do this.

That is one job that requires a professional. A knuckle buster. I already have a new bushing. The OE bushing has a slight leak. My mechanic has the facility and tools to get this done in his home garage. Waiting for the right time to have him do this.

Yeah. Unfortunately you need a special puller tool. I have seen DIYs that have done it without, but you risk damaging other components. I prefer to diy whenever possible, but I splurged for 240 parts and labor at my local german indy.

I'm sure I will get some flack for this, but I used Royal Purple in my old 328ci for 60k miles without issue. It helped with engaging first from a stop.

Put a new set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport's on the back of the vert today. I'd say we maximized the possible usage out of the ones we took off. No worries, no long road trips fo the most part, she only runs in to town once or twice a week and a tank of gas usually lasts a month.

My ABS failure light has been on and the codes show the motor has frozen. New pump from BMW is $1900 (part only) and I can get this rebuilt for $250 so I'm going that route.

Nothing quite like a good wash. I don't have a place to wash my car at my apartment complex, so I have to use a self-serve car wash place to get water. Actually, this thing is pretty freaking cool and is pretty cheap. It's an absurdly powerful pressure hose that has a hot, cold, and engine steaming function. I first rinsed the car off when with hot water, washed it with my Eagle One Nanowax suds, then sprayed it off with the cold water. I've never had my car feel so smooth to the touch before. It's really cool!

One of these days I am going to do a power-wash of my engine compartment with a degreaser. I just want to cover the right stuff up first before doing so.

I set up my to-do list for my suspension overhaul. Planning on gettng the parts around August. Soon enough I'll be finding myself purchasing some snow tires and wheels.

Added a coat of Chemical Guys XXX Hard Core Paste Wax to my paint protection scheme this morning. I'm in the process of convincing myself it adds additional depth and gloss to the finish. Also hoping the level of effort required to buff it out is indicative of the level of protection. Might have been a good place for a microfiber bonnet on the Griots RA. Informal experimentation indicates it will bead water like a champ.

Really was looking for added protection here. The employee lot where I work seems to be a nesting ground for some flock of pterodactyl-size birds who only eat overripe mulberries, and some of the bombs they drop could eat right through the steel. Time will tell. If two coats of Jetseal+wax can't save me, it just wasn't meant to be.

----------------------

Saturday, roomie texted me while I was out of town saying my ECS package came, the correct CA's came in.

Sunday, saw her for the first time since Thursday (was in Louisville all weekend)

Monday, drove to work

Tuesday, renewed my expired (June 30th, technically July 1st because 6/30 was a Sunday) tag. This was kind of a big deal because Memphis has been doing city inspections for a very long time. I recently had my windshield tinted and failed city inspection (I tried to sneak it through, but the inspector was on his game). Luckily (for me) the city is broke and city inspections ceased on 6/28. However, my backup plan was a letter from my eye doctor saying I need a tinted windshield for medical reasons, received Tuesday as well.

Wednesday, sending the letter mentioned above to Nashville so that I can get a permit for tinted windshield should I get pulled over (a few of the outlying Memphis suburbs are tint nazi's!). Hopefully they deem my letter to be reasonable. If not, oh well, I'll just be sure to drive the Honda into those suburbs.

Thursday (tomorrow), working 8a-4p all by myself, so I'll be washing the exterior and cleaning the interior

Pretty sure they are VMR V710's, same wheels I have, except in nicer condition ='-(

Great pics! Thanks for sharing!

PS, love the black mirror caps, I'm thinking about doing the same thing! Yours look to be "real" though and not plasti-dipped, did you just buy some black take-off's off of ebay or somewhere? Or painted yours yourself/had them done? I think I would prefer professionally painted (with clear coat) over plasti-dip as it would match the shadow line trim and tinted windows better.

First I just used a brush and got stones/sand etc out, then I sprayed some water and Auto Finesse Citrus and let the mats soak for about 10 min.
Then just sprayed with a garden hose with a nozzle head, and they were clean. dried them with a rag, and sprayed a TINY bit of 1Z Tiefenpfleger on them, and wiped off immediately with an MF towel, which gives it the dark, like-new look. That stuff has to be used sparingly, otherwise it will make the surface too slippery.

Oil change on Preston's @ 89,627.

Also changed the tires on the garden utility cart that we drag behind the 4-wheeler, total PITA from finding the stupid tire size, to the price of these little tires, to the mounting these Chinese tires that did not want to seat to the rim bead. Finally done, added Slime for good measure. Then drug the cart around for 0.25 mile to evenly distribute the Slime per directions. Last, decided to explore the "woods" next to our property and buried the 4-wheeler, a couple hours later we got it out. Uggggh.

Yeah, Preston & I were almost knee deep in the mud and we lifted each end of the 4-wheeler out to higher/dryer ground, then drove it out, hosed us down, cleaned the 4-wheeler, etc. 4-wheelers don't look like 500 lbs until you have to lift them, in 90 degree heat & 90% humidity no less. Bav,

What prompted you to consider the retrofit kit? Did you suffer from any of the common symptoms or was this for a peace of mind? :p

It was for the piece of mind. When I pulled my DISA, I found out that it didn't need replacing or had any signs of wear. I actually felt some remorse as I scrapped away the OEM rubber ring to replace it with the GAS o-ring. It was functioning perfectly. It was also fairly clean... However, I'm still very happy that I did it and would do it again if given the choice. The GAS kit is perfectly engineered and is in every way superior to the OEM design.

Even though the DISA looked fine, the car drives much better now. It's much smoother through the rpm band. This could've resulted from replacing the belts and pulleys, but she's driving like a dream now. I can't believe it made such a difference. My belts weren't too bad and only one pulley required replacing (I replaced two anyways). I'm running at 68k miles.

The problem is not the pixel. That has already been replaced by the d(st)ealer when under warranty. It is the lamp inside the cluster that lights up the mileage. Just a matter of lamp replacement.

Anybody have the procedure to remove the cluster on a E39?

^that's the removal instruction I read before doing this.

So called BMWNA Customer Relations today, they took my info and said they'd look into it. Threads over on e38/39 forums have reported that BMWNA does offer some goodwill on this dead pixels repair, normally a heavily discounted instrument panel (in some cases the part is free) as long as you pay the 1 hour labor for install at your local dealer. I'd be game for that arrangement. I asked how they make a determination on these requests and he said it depends on each particular case, how long you've owned the vehicle, etc. Then he noticed from looking at my file that I was a multiple & repetitive BMW owner, and with that little bit of additional info known he said no promises but if they don't give me a break on this repair then they probably won't help anyone.

He also asked if I had any other questions so I asked about the dry rotting rubber around the side windows on one of our coupes, whined that the price for the part was way too high for something that never wears out on other cars of the same age, he promised to look into that one too. If I get any traction on this one, it'll set a precedent for others to follow with a request for some goodwill on the cost of the shadow line window trim.

CA "requires" front plates, but they usually only enforce it on JDM (lots of ricers here in Sacramento) because many of them act stupid on the road or have illegal/stolen parts. Cops don't usually bug Euro owners about it. I've had mine on for months and never got a second glance from any cops.

I'm gonna get wheel and boots right away when I order. Black looks so much better, IMO, and so does Tri-Stitch.

Opps thought this was the what did you buy today thread.. My bad... lol

The black & Tri-Stitch looks great, I agree. I think I'll stick with the OEM though,
I dont really want to replace my boots.

The tri-stitch is a classic look, but I think that gray stitch is very nice as well. Hard to go wrong with a Coby wrap..

I recently bought a cobywheel.. decided to get tri-stitch and new boots as well. If you want a more subtle tri-stitch, do the red-navy-blue instead of red-royal-blue. The royal purple center stitch really makes it stand out (which is awesome) but the navy stitch (which I got) tones it down a little.

Ah, the joys of home ownership. They don't seem too expensive on Amazon.com, but I'm not sure if I'm up to installing it. Everything I've read online says its kind of dangerous.

Then blasted down to the inlaws for drinks and dinner, curvy back roads in Northern Mississippi were decent, and the one turn I took a little too quick (IMO) was nothing for the car, thats the 1,987,654 time this car has saved my @$$.

So replaced one bulb in the rear of the instrument cluster tonight and got everything back. But my dead pixels problem is now worse than before. Think I'm going to try the pleading with BMW NA customer service routine first and see if I can get a break on the cost of the part. If that doesn't work, then shipping it off to VDOrepair.com.

BMW USA customer service FTW! They called today and will cover the $550 instrument panel cluster for free, I need to cover the labor to install, I should have this fixed for under 2 C notes. Appt scheduled for next week so will be ready for Bimmerfest East.

Safelite came to fix the moulding popping up on my windshield. They said the factory uses an adhesive to keep it down, and mine just didn't have it. He fixed it, and I noticed the adhesive he used is a weird goopy kind of stuff that doesn't seem to harm paint. It's really odd. Never seen anything like it before. I saw some adhesive slightly sticking out (of course), so I used one of my non-marring pry tools to get rid of the excess. It came off really easily, yet was really sticky.

I'd like to know what it was, because it can come in handy in a lot of areas. He did mention it was made by 3M.

I figured since the car has the ///M badge every where else, it wouldn't hurt to have it on the license plate frame LOL.
My CSL reps even have the M badges on them. ;)
