Thanks, and I agree. It can't be a coincidence that the perf. diffuser perfectly fits the perf. exhaust, yet it looks ridiculous without it. For now I like it without the spoiler as it's very understated, but the spoiler itself isn't over the top, either.

Well then you're one listen away from buying it! Don't listen to it!!!!

I've already listened to it in person.

There was an E82 128i with a PE installed that ran autocross with us. Sooooo good

I don't believe he does because he doesn't have a car to mess with all the time. However we both do have the software for it but not the hardware that is required for it. Not sure if that made sense. In due time I'll get everything that is needed for such a task. ATM I am trying to figure out how to code the new F series.

Good luck! Worst case scenario, if you have to pull the tint, have that done and retint it with Llumar Air Blue 80... As soon as I replace my windshield, I'll be doing that. Almost completely clear, but rejects heat and UV like no other!!

Thanks!

I almost went with a different 3M product that has similar properties to what you are talking about. But it was lighter and cost over twice as much. If I have to do it twice though, it would have been the better deal X-/

What I have on my windshield now is also a 3M product. As are the rest of the windows, it wasn't too bad overall, but that fancy heat reflecting tint was twice as much as the regular 3M film. The guy at the shop said it would have a "bronze" look to it, which is another reason I went with regular tint. Bronze windshield on Imola Red with regular (black) other window's didn't sound too good to me.

I'll check into that film your talking about on the next car!

Ceramic does have a reflective type material on the film, but no bronze.

I have Madico Advance Ceramic on both of the cars, and I wouldn't go with anything else, IMO. Once you go ceramic film, and realize the heat rejection over standard film...the difference is incredible.

Yes, but they are not DOT approved.

They are plug-n-play, and so much easier than trying to mount the clear lenses on my old ZHP sedan.

Edit: I paid $360 for mine about a year ago, so they're cheaper than either the CF spoiler or side skirts if that's a consideration.

Yeah, quality is excellent. Not DOT approved because they are tinted. They can only be sold by local vendors for off-road use.

I think you can get them from ECS Tuning now as well Shmiedmann. Part # is 63212225282 if ordering on-line from Schmiedmann.

Edit: Yep, you can get them from ECS at this (http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E82-135i-N55_3.0L/Lighting/Tail_Light/ES2550272/) linky, but I think they're a little more expensive than the Shmiedmann variant.

Love Imola Red! I swear that's what he said about that particular 3M film he had, perhaps he misspoke or I misheard. Heat reflectivity isn't too important when you park in garages all of the time. If my car had skin pigment it would be very pale!

Bauce. Hope you had fun!! I'm still trying to find a free spot to visit.

On my side, drained some garbage BMW 5W30 that looked like crude oil, and filled her up with German Castrol 0W30 from Amazon with a new filter and a new magnetic drain plug. This oil is a little more expensive, but I wanted to try it out given my high mileage. Of course, the engine was super smooth right after the fill, but let's see how it ages. I'll be sending in a sample of my old oil to Blackstone.

I FINALLY got my car paid off so I figured I had to splurge on something, so I got some Silver cube trim for the dash and shifter surround along with a few other goodies. I was a bit surprised that it isn't as 'silver' as I expected. Is that the way everyone else's looks?

http://mrmaico.smugmug.com/Cars/BMW-333Ci/i-9QP2kWF/0/L/IMG_1890-L.jpg

I'll need to get it out into the sunshine to really see how it looks but it sure looks nice to add something a little lighter to the all black dash. I can't ever see myself spending another $500 for just the front armrests plus another $350 for the rears so it's a good thing that this is a darker silver.......makes a better match to the black armrests. Or maybe I'll run across some good used ones sometime.:-)

I don't know how everybody else does it but it was a BITCH to get the old ones off! they fit the fasteners so damn tight. I had a couple of the red grommets pull out of the dash rather than the pin coming out of it like it should. I even damaged the lower right corner of the passenger side piece getting it off but it looks like I can straighten it out ok should I ever decide to sell the black.

Congrats!!!! Debt free = one huge leap towards stress free.

Yes, your hunch is correct - newer silver cube trim is a different shade. It's very noticeably darker, it will not match the older more silver trim so be careful what you buy:

http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?9699-Silver-cube-trim-different-shades&highlight=Silver+cube+trim+shades

Yep! It was a huge PITA for me as well. I also pull the securing grommets out every time, but I've mastered it except for that center dash pin near the steering wheel. I've probably pulled the trim out about 6-8 times now and never broke anything until yesterday.

The grill job is about 2-3 hours work, and that includes removing the front bumper and putting it back on. Some will say there are "easier" ways, but the following link is the exact DIY you need...

I've been smelling this awful stench in my garage for the past 3-4 days. It's a one car garage attached to the apartment and there's no lights - it's completely dark. After a while, I complained to my brother since the smell was getting only worse with each passing day. He looked around after I backed out, but didn't find anything. I left the garage open that day to air it out as my car smells fine outside and inside, so I knew something was fishy in there. I suspected some homeless bum spilled his drink, threw up or did something even worse; but I have been diligently locking it up every single time. After all, we did find a homeless guy camping out there a few times before (if we left the door closed but unlocked).

Now I'm installing my clears today and the smell is horrendous, I'm trying to breathe in small quick breaths. WTF? Where is it coming from? What could it be? I look under the car half-suspecting to be greeted by a heavily decomposing carcass, but find nothing. Whew - I knew I never hit anything. I install the right side and reach down to grab the left side lights. That's when I see it. A 6-7 inch long rat (not including tail) with a shoe print on it. I almost threw up on the spot. It must have died, and either my brother or I (I really suspect it was me since I traverse there frequently) stepped right into it without noticing. I almost grabbed the thing! I actually set my clear lights in a freaking circle around it in the dark! LOL. I quickly did the other side (now really careful where I was stepping), then got the hell out of there.

Ugh now I have to look forward to removing it somehow. I think I may have contracted some rat disease the way I feel... What really worries me is that I now know I have a rat infested garage = no good way to store your car. My parents had to deal with mice in their garage and it was hell... Time to place mouse traps I guess.

Use peanut butter on the traps, you can also put a little cheese on it. They say the best way is to actually use PB on the traps without setting them. Then, the rats gets used to it, aren't afraid, and then they go after them quicker, so when you actually set the traps, they are more effective. I'm not that patient so I'd just set multiple traps with PB.

Congrats! Now let's hear you say...........I'm car payment debt free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:roundel

Time to get the old car payment coupon book out and burn it.

Thanks Mike! Yup, it sure is nice to not have any payments whatsoever anymore. Now I just have to avoid the urge to buy something else. :biggrin

Thanks for the link to your other thread, I guess I missed that one. And nice to hear I'm not the only one who had trouble getting the old ones off.

Agreed with the others... The darker silver cube is very nice! If you decide to sell the black stuff, I'd probably be up for the center dash piece, the one that runs across the top of the nav screen. :)

And most importantly, congrats on the final payment!!

As for me, nothing for MY car today, but I managed to get a bunch of work done on an FXR light retrofit for Tony. So far I'm fairly happy with the results. I still prefer the other retrofits though...

Thanks Jon, I'm liking the new trim more and more as time goes by. Still need to get it out in some good sunshine and get a good look at it. Friday for sure........if it doesn't rain.

I'll let you know if I decide to sell. I'd probably try to sell it as a set first though unless there are people interested in some of the other pieces. I probably will decide to sell it.......I'm really liking the new stuff.

This is the other side. It resembles the "newer ones" I've seen talked about in some of the coding threads. I bought it from the link you provided, but who knows what's in production in China from one week to the next. Let me know if you think there's problems.

I'm pretty sure I'm not ready to dive in yet. Is there some of the software loading and stuff I should do ahead of time? Is the car going to want to be on a battery charger while coding? I'm starting a new job tomorrow, and for the first few weeks at least, I'm scheduled 5:00 pm to 1:00 am, Wed-Sunday, so my window of opportunity is going to be Monday and Tuesday evenings, it seems. I'll PM you and midlandtech about trying to figure out a day. He wants to learn, too, and will be looking to use my gear, I think.

Woah, that sucks, dude. What happened?

Thanks for the kind words.

Everyone is fine; I was the only one in my car. Shared fault though the police recorded it as being all mine. In a nut shell- four way intersection with only two stop signs. Older lady had the right of way, but it was raining and she was in a gray Ford Focus and didn't have her lights on. I didn't see her and got t-boned at ~20-30mph.

Unfortunately, if I had been more insistent with police (as to putting the light aspect in the report) I believe this would have been recorded as shared fault, because in NJ (where the accident was) lights are required by law in rain.

They talked to her most of the time and didn't write down what I told them.

So I take the fact that I'm okay and learned some lessons.

What sucks is that I was about 5 minutes from NJMP and was about to participate in my first HPDE.

Shipping is a lot from NJ. I'd have to sell my car first. Somebody local would be able to bid much higher than me because they wouldn't have to eat as much shipping as I would.

Plus, last time I said something along the lines of buying someones salvaged ZHP, they got really upset, so if I would ever consider such a thing, it would most likely be a private discussion. Although, the damage isn't much.

Sorry for your loss, that is one beautiful ZHP.

I would be pretty distraught if my car got damaged, but at the same time, I wouldn't want a "fixed" car either. I've had other cars in the past "fixed" from hail damage, minor accidents, etc and IMO they are never quite the same. Perhaps mine were all just fixed at crappy body shops, but with this car, if something happens to her I want it to be bad enough that she gets taken away. What would I get? Another one just like her!

Have you thought about what you will be replacing her with? Another ZHP?!

Glad no one was seriously injured, in this sue-happy world we live in, injuries (real or fake) can be an even bigger source of headache for someone found at fault. If you were ticketed, I would attempt to go to court and plead your case that she did not have her headlights on. TN has the same law, if your windshield wipers are on, your headlights are to be on.

----------------

As for me and my ZHP, I drove it for the first time in a week today/night to work! With only one headlight, I'm probably going to have time (at work) to swap bulbs shortly to verify the bulb is fine and its just a ballast.

What is the best course of action to replace a ballast (assuming it is the culprit, not the bulb)?

Imola.ZHP
06-13-2013, 04:34 AM
Ok, so I swapped bulbs (twice just to be sure), bulbs are fine! So I swapped ballasts, no problem, so the ballasts are fine!

According to ECS's website the only thing I did try was swapping ignightor's. I didn't really see a way to do it and I ran out of time anyway. Can someone chime in that has either had to replace an ignightor or that is just familiar with the disassembly of KW headlights point me to a video or a DIY that might include removal and/or replacement of an ignightor?

I see some ignightor's on eBay, I didn't see if they were OEM or not, any words of caution? Or any other source of a new or used ignightor?

Thanks!

EDIT:

Found this link... http://www.bigpatsfans.com/hl/headlight.htm

Pretty good instructions, looks like this is going to be a PITA though. Didn't someone on here have a YouTube video for ZKW lense swap into AL's? And since I'm goin in, I might as well do that swap too, right? Where is a good place to get ZKW lenses? Thanks!!

Might buy it back... I took the big parts (my wheels and the stereo) but there is so much miscellaneous stuff. Coby wheel shift boots- M3 steering wheel, upgraded BMW sway bars, new shocks/struts/mounts, Vanos, Stewart WP, you get the idea. But all in all that really is little stuff and I may be better of just walking away.

Not upset. I'd love to see it back on the road! If you did- put it back on the road- I'd love to take it for a drive one more time if I'm ever out your way.

Unfortunately it's not just the door/fender. The lower rail that goes under the door sill is bent in and the base of the A pillar is destroyed. The body shop was talking about ordering the whole side panel- from rear quarter to front fender- that BMW sells and welding it in. Just letting you know what you'd face.

Really sucks man. This has been a bad month for a lot of people on the forum it seems. Just glad you're OK.

Yeah, I'm getting another ZHP. It will be my 3rd (sold the other one last year). I looked at all other options and nothing really fits the bill. The only car I truly want more is a 981 (2014) Boxster/Cayman S which is not in the cards financially. The other outside possibility is the an M3 convertible- but maintenance costs more, there are Vanos risks and such as well.

I know what you mean. I'm partially relieved that it's totaled- body shops are a pain and things often need to be taken back. For this case they would have had to cut off a side of the car and weld it back in, pull the dash etc. While that kind of work can be done perfectly so you'd never know... the chances of it being fixed perfectly are very slim.

I really just wish it had never happened.

Ok guys, here is what I decided to do...

Since the thought of a used ignitor (at only a +/- 30% discount from new) has me worried that I would eventually have to replace it (the used ignitor) again, I've decided just to oder a new one from ECS ($100). I'll go ahead and order the seal/strainer for my windshield washer pump too and ZKW lenses from theretrofitsource.com ($40).

I have a question though, when I was swapping parts this morning between headlights to narrow down the issue (bulb, ignitor or ballast) I noticed that my bulbs were stained slightly on the bottom side. I didn't think much of it at the time, but as I've been researching the ZKW swap, someone on another forum was talking about theirs having this discoloration at the bottom. The attached picture is not of my bulbs, mine are not as bad as these, but should they be replaced too? It might have to wait until next month, but I'll go ahead and put it on the radar if I'm going to need them. Mine have no brown, just slightly milky white/yellow more like the bulb pictured on the right.

I agree, not at the top of my list of "must do now's" but the worn out front suspension is pretty high priority so I can get it aligned (still haven't aligned since replacing RTAB's). That Pilot Super Sport showing metal on the back is kind of a big deal too. Oh and the non functional headlight, that is the biggie!

I'm still thankful that I have no car note though! She's been paid off for nearly 3 years! At $500/month, one could say I've "saved" $18,000!

I originally bought these to put on the 318is as my wife and I have been using it more and while I love the stock weaves, I wanted something different. Then just yesterday my daughter finally shows some interest in learning to drive a stick - amazing what a day at the historic races at Sonoma will do - I now can't risk rubbing or ruining these babies, so on to the 2002 it appears they are headed.

Now to decide which tires at 205/55/15 - any input would be fantastic!

I've been out of town on business for a few weeks. When I got home, I had refurbished ZKW headlights for the ZHP waiting to be put back in the car. I sent them to LightModz to have the projectors replaced. They did a fantastic job and the turn-around time was excellent. If anyone is considering having this done, I highly recommend LightModz. Jay (at LightModz) sent some photos that I can post when I get home tonight if anyone is interested.

In addition to the headlights, I did a full detail on my X5 and have that on the agenda for this weekend for my wife's 335i. Don't worry, the ZHP has not been neglected. Its full detail happened a couple weeks ago, ahead of its newer stable mates!

On Wednesday replaced front brake pads and outer rear brake pads (replaced inner rear brake pads in April because old ones were gone but only on inner pads). The fronts still had 2-3mm left and rear outers had 3-4mm, but I have a track day Sunday and they started screeching after my last track day. Anyway, good to know I now have plenty of pad.

I couldn't find the minimum rotor thickness stamped on the rear rotors. Fronts are clearly marked 23.4mm and mine still have 24.1mm left. Anyone know what the rear minimum is?

May I ask the cost for refurbished ZKW headlights ?

No problem, I had to ship the assemblies with the burnt bowls and they replaced the projector units. The cost for the parts and labor was $600. Then add shipping both directions. I would not say that it was inexpensive, but the work was excellent and I am extremely pleased with the results. When the headlights got back, all I had to do was remount them in the car.

I had read many threads about doing it myself, but decided that I did not have the time to do the work. So, I took the quick and easy route. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Notice how the new filter has more ridges than the old? I first saw that about 2-1/2 to 3 years ago, so that'll give you an idea on the age of your micro filter.

They aren't going on my car yet. My Mom has an E90 that had 19' VMR CSLs, but she got a flat last week so we picked up this set which is pretty much new. We're going to run them on the E90 temporarily until we find a good set of OEM wheels locally for the E90. As soon as that happens, they'll be put on my car. I'm hoping to have them on my car ASAP. It's going to look awesome, I must say.

Specs:
VMR VB3 (CSL) - Hyper Black
235/40/18
255/35/18
Hankook V12 tires

My old ZHP, which had the same CSL wheel specs...why did I ever sell this?

Drove it!

First time since getting off of work at 8am on Friday. She frustrates me sometimes, but damn I love her! Nothing like blasting down the interstate (very light traffic, nothing crazy) to make all of the stress in your life disappear, if only for a few moments.

Big ECS order says it will ship on the 20th. Fixing my non-working headlight is TOP priority. ZKW lenses going in at the same time (have to disassemble the headlight to replace the ignitor, might as well!). I need to maximize my light output with the tinted windshield, love how it reduces glare and oncoming headlights though.

Back to DAT studies!

My crystalline tint is all in and dry I am loving it. Very clear. I would take pictures but its so clear that it would look just like a normal window

Oddly though, my keyless entry stopped working yesterday. For both keys. Taking someone to the airport this morning the keys still didn't work so I had to use the key itself (gasp!). When I got home I tried to lock the car with the remote and it still didn't work. I went inside to get ready for work then went outside to try it one more time and possibly try the sync/reset procedure I found via google. NOW, both remotes work fine without doing anything other than pressing the lock button. All buttons responded after that. Odd, huh?

Nicely done Antone!

Thanks! I have some tips for when anyone else is going to do this:
- when installing the piece of metal into the firewall so that you can screw the siren there, I couldn't get it to snap in. After wrestling with it and almost dropping it a few times, I grabbed a wrench and squeezed the metal tabs in a bit. That allowed it to snap into place.
- it was very difficult to screw the siren in after that because my ratchet kept hitting metal or the blower box. I wish I had a very long extension or long flexible extension.

Now a question. I just realized i didn't pay attention to which direction i reinstalled the cabin air filter (clean side up or down) due to the looming darkness and fog. Does it only install one way? What side should the clean side of the filter go, up or down? I need to check when I get home.

The cabin air filter should only fit in one way, unless you forced the shit outta it, and if that's the case, you'd probably know it wasn't right. So, if it went in without much trouble, its probably correct. That being said, on the outer edges, there are small tabs that fit into a recess in the "tracks" that it slides on. They will match up. Again, check the tracks on the two sides that the filter sits on, you'll see what I mean.

Wow, thanks for the link Dane. I read every word. I can't even imagine something like that happening... unbelievable.

We had the rear on race ramps, e brake on, in gear, tires chalked, etc. But certainly even more attention will be paid regardless.

I have a Mystic Blue Metallic and the black mouldings do not really provide any contrast. That's the reason I will have my mouldings painted. I have a set of all around sedan mouldings that still needs to be prepped and painted.

I agree. I think my black mouldings add alot to my silver gray car's look.

I installed the Sprint Booster I got via the family in the classifieds and I didn't break any plastic. Awesome addition. Tonight is the USA SPEC so I don't have to keep changing CDs. I just found out Saturday is a family reunion with the inlaw's side :facepalm which pushes my cooling system refresh to Sunday.

Just took the M3 out for the first time on the new summer rubber. (Federal 595 EVO's) Wow, what a difference. I will never put A/S back on this car.

I'll be sure to post a review once they break in a bit. So far they only have about 50 miles on them.

Wrestled with these puppies for 30 minutes before they succumbed to a really mean looking stripped bolt puller :D Pics of the wheel locks that used to go in there were posted a few pages back. Let's just say that the winter didn't make it easy for these or ANY of my lugs to come off...

Evan,
After cleaning up the threads in your hubs, apply some anti-seize compound to each of your lug bolts and it all should come apart easier next time.

Well, today's the day... This morning I pressed the tank as full as I could, gave her a good wash, and then tucked her into the garage. Mirrors folded in and tight up against the workbench. She gets to rest now until mid September...

Back to work I go. *sigh*

Opened my trunk yesterday, and almost ripped the handle from the lid. I took it off today only to find that half of the mounting points had been ripped off. I decided to try epoxying it back together before I give in and spend the $80 on a new handle. Luckily, it seems to have worked. The handle is back together, and actually feels more stable than it did before. Hopefully it will stay that way.

For anyone with the same issue, you will need some Permatex Plastic Weld. (This is some super strong stuff and sets up super fast, so move quick)
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/niart906/null-41.jpg

Broken Handle: (there should be plastic in that hole)
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/niart906/null-39.jpg

Apply the epoxy liberally to the cracked plastic. Some of mine had actually snapped off, so carefull apply some of the epoxy to the pieces of plastic before placing them back on the handle. Allow to dry for at least 30min.

This stuff is kinda messy so it will look something like this:
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/niart906/null-43.jpg

http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/niart906/null-44.jpg

Once dry, use some sand paper to knock down the extra epoxy. I used this stone sanding attachment for a drill.
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/niart906/null-47.jpg

Sanded down:
http://i864.photobucket.com/albums/ab207/niart906/null-46.jpg

All done. It feels as good as new. I'll have to give you guys an update on how its holding up in a few months.

Really? All of the other cars I've owned have had studs, seemed like their wheels would get chewed up by the studs when putting wheels on or taking them off. Perhaps this was just "user error" though.

The lug bolts can be challenging at times, but overall I think I prefer them myself.

I wire-wheeled the old bolts to be re-used, painted all the heads, chased the threads in the hubs, and applied some anti-seize shtuff.

Studs are something I have seriously considered, if I get a ZHP that i track a lot I'll look into it!

Just popped in the new seal/screen for the windshield washer pump, hopefully that cures the leak!

Also noticed that the oil filler cap is missing. VERY bizarre and explains the rough idle on the way to work. Do these just fall off? I am the only owner/driver of the car and the oil filler cap hasn't been off since the last oil change at ~3k miles ago.

Out of all of my new parts from ECS, this one tiny part is all I have time to install right now. I do have a question though, I ordered new CA's from ECS as "genuine BMW" however, I recall my current CA's having ///M etched into them. These new ones are nice and light, but do not have this marking. Did they quit doing this? Or did I get the wrong CA's?

http://www.ecstuning.com/ES49278/

For reference, the link to the products are above, in their pictures they don't show these markings either. Should I be concerned? I paid ~OEM price, so I expected OEM parts. I could have went aftermarket and saved money, so if these are aftermarket, I'm going to be a little upset.

I could definitely be wrong, but I always thought you were supposed to keep anti-seize off the lugs?

A lot of internet warriors will say to keep it away, but tech's opinions can differ. Three experienced techs at the dealership I work for agreed that some compound on the lugs was a good idea to solve my sticking problem. I'm sure there are situations in which nothing should be applied though.

It looks like you got the standard CA's rather than the ZHP arms. Part numbers should be 31122282121 and 31122282122. Mine didn't have ///M etched into them but it was on a blue sticker on both my old ones and the new ones. Here's a pic of one of my old ones........

I'm sure those will still fit but you don't have the steel ball joint and stronger design of the ZHP arms. Are those the ones you ordered or did they send you the wrong ones?

Thanks for replying, I had a feeling they were the wrong ones. They even emailed me and said something about some of my items would not be returnable, to which I responded "as long as they are the right parts for my 2003 BMW 330i ZHP with VIN XYZ, then I would have no reason to return them." Hopefully they were talking about other parts of the order. Great... This will be a fun call Monday morning...

You're welcome. I can't imagine that they would give you any problems with exchanging them for the correct ones. They must have been referring to something else in your order.

I completely agree. Surely they sell these "regular" e46 CA's often enough that taking them back won't be a big deal.
