What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2

Just finished doing transmission refresh with new gasket and filter due to having a gasket leak. Think I found my issue to be a poor mating surface, so I scotch padded the sump and tranny mating surfaces to get all the bumps and imperfections out. Torqued all the bolts sequentially and 5-6L of LiquiMoly ATF.
Also, turns out this leak was a blessing in disguise. When filling the sump while the engine was running, I saw a profuse fuel leak from one of the hoses emerging from the fuel filter. I don’t know how long it’s been leaking, but I’m kinda upset I didn’t notice this before. 92 octane is a commodity these days and I’m not tryna waste that shit [emoji23] Tightened down the crimp on the hose and no more leak. Will definitely keep an eye on it though going forward.

Swapped brake pads for Laguna Seca. Unfortunately, EBC Yellow now has a complicated brake-in I couldn't properly complete in time and left me with a mushy pedal for the weekend. There was no confidence in the brakes. Very light pressure for the first 1-2 inches, and then all the modulation over the next three inches. No real bite. I lost a lot of time due to my lack of confidence in the brakes, but still got close to my desired target time of a 1:51.6.

Last time I was there in a 328Ci. Manual vs auto, LSD vs open, Spherical RTAB vs poly, 235hp vs 193hp, 360TW vs 300TW...but that's it. I'd say out of that entire list, the horsepower is likely the largest difference. However last time I got a 1:55.x, so I think 2-3 seconds were some driver mods :). Later in the afternoon I played with late-braking turn 2 which is when I learned how much more braking I had available, but by then I was super tired and lacked the focus needed to link it altogether. If you are in California, Laguna is truly the most fun-spirited track.

I also picked up some M3 spindles. They make my F80 front brakes plug and play. I'm still debating how I'll divvy up my car budget this month: brakes or sound system.

Replaced ignition coils yesterday. I’m pretty sure they were original (210k miles). Engine revs more smoothly and a pleasant surprise was that the 4k dip isn’t noticeable as much now, which I wasn’t expecting.

I purchased the G.A.S. CCV kit Roylan (REF84) had for sale today . . . looking forward to installing this kit on my ZHP :) Also ordered an HVAC relocation kit for my upcoming AVIN4 head unit install to complete my stereo upgrade for this car :cool

Yup, I’ve also noticed that I’m subconsciously shifting up at higher rpms cause I don’t notice the dip and how freely it revs. It’s also one of the easiest DIYs we can do on our cars!

So my friend’s e46 died at 1/2 tank on the highway and wouldn’t restart. Turned out to be the fuel pump. Since he wants to sell it anyway, I changed out my fuel pump for a new one I’ve had lying around and gave him the old one. Works just fine and only 40k miles on it.

That was the brand that I also pulled out when my fuel pump went Kaput. So I ordered and replaced with genuine part. And genuine part was also VDO.

So, what gives with the original BMW part? I know the fuel pump was never replaced before I did.

I compared the "trip computer" stats on the X3 and 335. Both trips were to the same destination (42 miles in morning traffic). The 335 has better MPG by 4 miles:

2011 F25 X3 (N52 engine, 6-cyl NA)
departure = 8:03 am
duration = 1:06 hr
distance = 42 mi
consumption = 25.1 mpg
speed = 39 mph

2012 F30 335i (N55 engine, 6-cyl turbo)
departure = 8:06 am
duration = 1:06 hr
distance = 42 mi
consumption = 29.3 mpg
speed = 39.3 mph

This is where I got the info. Next week, I will try the ECO mode on the 335.

Correct, my estimate is 30 miles were on the highway.

We average about 25-26 mpg in winter and 27-28 mpg in summer with our x3 i4 turbo. Both being highway mpgs.

In our F33 N26, I can get 32MPG easy and 35mpg highway if I milk it.

I got 34mpg in the Zhp as well when cruising at 65mph. Highway speed has so much to do with it though.

Yeah, basically the genuine bmw part is a VDO unit with a bmw emblem stamped into it.
Sometimes when you buy an OE part, you can see where they scratched the bmw emblem out, thereby rebranding it from genuine to OE.

Picked up some Black Leather, heated, power Z4 Sport seats. They aren't the manual, fabric insert, heated seats I wanted, but at 1/3rd the price of the ones I wanted, it was too good to pass up (plus local/cash = no taxes, no fees, no shipping) and the person I bought them off of turned out so interesting we chatted for 2 hrs after the craigslist buy until the rain cut it short! I'll weigh, clean, and condition them soon. If I install them, I'll need to source black leather door cards and rear seats.

Update: Passenger seat weighs 55.8 lbs / 25.3 kg and driver's seat weighs 56.4 lbs / 25.6 kg, seat belt tensioners included. They are heavy suckers. I think equivalent E46 seats weigh 28 kg each, I'll weigh mine (heated/powered) when they come out but they should be very similar in weight.

Manual/unheated seats might even go into the 40s, which would be a huge saving over stock seats and not even that much heavier than Recaros with hardware. Perhaps I should start looking for Z4 seats as well. I wish they weren't so expensive.

It's the shipping that gets you. They are plentiful in the UK. Here's a small sample that are listed now (I converted prices to USD for you). If anyone is serious about plunking down some change, just ask me. I'll save you a lot of time and headache will the sellers I've already contacted about shipping to the states.

Based on Tim's experience I know that shipping a seat that isn't super heavy from Italy to the NA isn't expensive, at least with business shipping. That's also a problem though because I can probably have those seats shipped in from the UK to Germany for an OK price (still not cheap if they are that stubborn about shipping to the US) but as private people we don't have access to cheaper business shipping options so by the time my contacts in Germany send it our way it will probably end up costing almost as much as the seller originally wanted.

I finally got around to changing out my
Power steering return line.

I had purchased this line when I had to do a power steering pump replacement over a year and a half ago. I attempted to do it with the pump replacement but, couldn’t get the line off the radiator with the only available tools from the now junk parts stores.

A few months back I made a $15-$20 investment in the proper tool and finally got around to using it.

It does work fantastic and well with the money but, you do need to remove it after it released the locks, in order to get the line off. It’s hard to figure out what’s stopping something you can’t see!

That's how I end up doing it on a lot of cars unfortunately. Even with a whole bunch of line disconnect tools, the connectors get so crusty that they don't want to let go.

I refreshed a Z4M steering wheel I will be trying out with the ZHP.

(1) I cleaned and re-conditioned the Nappa leather (leatherique), used a heat gun to get rid of many of the creases/wrinkles in the 1-2 o'clock region.

(2) Disassembled the steering wheel and wrapped the worn trim in Matte Black vinyl. Originally the entire trim is in a rubberized matte texture (aka plastidip) - which rubs off extremely easily. Just cleaning it will rub parts of it off.

Half-way through, I decided it would look better if the trim was matte black and button surrounds were gloss black, so I went that route. Couldn't be happier, good contrast - plus gives the wheel my own personal unique touch!

The trim pieces on these things are terribly cheap and their anchor points/clips are extremely fragile which I didn't expect. I ended up taking the thing apart, finding all of the broken pieces, and re-gluing them on. I would not want someone re-wrapping the wheel, they'll just break everything upon disassembly - it's that bad. Took 2 days total with the conditioning and things breaking (time for glue to cure).

This might just may replace my M sport steering wheel. It's a tad smaller in diameter:

For cruise control you need to set it with the stalk as this was moved to the stalk for the E85 cars. You can transfer the E85 stalk controls to E46's too. In the 12 yrs I've owned the car, I've never touched cruise control, so I won't miss it although I know some people who wouldn't be able to live without it.

That is an interesting DIY. I didn't think you could retrofit the Cruise Control stalk to the car. Very nice!

Yeah, they do look very nice but dang I do miss my fabric/alcantara seats after driving in them for 3 hrs today. They have much less cushion/foam (of course). The bolsters hold you in, but I am a lot more uncomfortable in such sporty seats in casual driving. Yes, I'm getting old. I really have to get used to them and give them more time.

Checked with dye and no leak found. First time anything’s been done to the AC in nearly 20 years. I’m okay with that.

For what it's worth at 24, I also find the Z4M seats incredibly firm. My buddy has them in his Z4 and I was incredibly envious until I sat it in it. It's just so firm, it doesn't feel like cushions. I met this woman completely randomly who let me drive her a non-M Z4C with sport seats and those were fairly comfy.

Finished swapping out the alcantara interior and putting in the black leather. Topped up fluids too. The seats are a bit too firm for my liking, but luckily there's cheap aftermarket remedies for that - looking into thin seat cushions for only the bottom part of them.

I just finished wire tapping the angel eye triggers to the license plate light so they can be toggled on/off with the parking lights with the LCM switch. Previously I had it tapped to the tail lights, but that method also required some coding. Tapping into the license plate lights instead enables me to re-code the tails back to their default dim settings, which I prefer.

Mine needed a lot more than 3V to trigger it. 4.5V didn't do it and my rears were around 3.5-4.0V according to the voltmeter. The relay would try to trigger and would just make a bunch of rapid pops but wouldn't stay open. Set is from from Angel Eye Guy.

Unsure right now. It's in very good condition (never altered or touched-up) except for a minor ding or two and a one or two tabs broken. With Birch being so rare and irreplaceable - there's no dependability on parts if something happens like airbag deployment - although the trim would be least of my concerns then... Only real reason why I'm keeping another almost complete Birch set on hand actually. Silver cube in decent condition is getting hard to find as well. Plus I like the option to be able to change my mind and swap it out depending on the mood, like switching between jeans and slacks.

Yeah, they look a lot better in person believe it or not - especially from the rear seats. You'll understand once you get your pair. Have some patience it took me a few months of looking around! it’s due to lack of driving it. took off side skirts, bumpers, fender liners for polish and wool wax everywhere over a year ago. Some of the liners were broken by the OP so I replaced both sides. Of course the thing sat so long it the garage it’s been cleaned and polished more than driven. [emoji2357]

Once upon a time son was checking coolant before long trip… 70 miles later he had low coolant warning even though coolant system was redone 3000 miles ago. Coolant was all over and looked like new OE expansion tank cracked. No overheating because he was drying on a local road so pulled out on the side right away. Turns out he didn’t tighten the cap. Distilled water saved a day. Hopefully yours is that easy. Lesson learned - tighten the cap all the way.

Honestly wasn’t all that bad. I’m lucky I have a garage to do projects in now though. And that my Z is a florida car and I’m located in Texas now, so minimal rust to deal with. It was at most a 6/10 on the difficulty scale.

The worst part was putting the pan back on even with zip ties holding the gasket. I also ran the Liqui moly flush before draining the oil. Left the oil pump alone since it was really tight on there

Hm, it should work if you already have an auto-dimming mirror. All EXX series BMW's use the same mirror connections I think. I didn't have an auto-dimming mirror so I had to wire in pins 3 (12V) and 10 (Ground) to get the auto-dimming and compass functions to work. If you have a voltmeter I'd check out those pins on your connector.

The 2002 325xi had an auto-dim mirror & no SOS, compass or alarm - the compass & auto-dim features worked with no changes.
The 2006 330ci ZHP has manual dim & no SOS - neither the compass nor auto-dim features worked upon installation. I've read about having to remove a pin on SOS car to avoid frying the mirror, but don't know if I need to move pins in the existing connector or add pins &/or a different connector to the car. I figured if the 2002 model was wired ready for the "upgrade" surely the 2006 would be wired - apparently not!

Not a ZHP. But my wife's E39 '03 530i.

Replaced front and rear Struts & Shocks with necessary associated kit (FCP Euro) with Bilsteins B4 (ECS Tuning). Alignment.

Replaced spark plugs with NGK and Mahle Fuel Filter due to jerking when shifting gears like fuel starvation. Solved the jerking.

Replaced Transmission and Differential fluids with Red Line.

I got manual adjusting/heated BMW E85 M seats for the ZHP. I'll dig into them more tomorrow to make sure they are also plug and play like my current powered / heated E85 M seats. I'm thinking the connections and plugs should all be the same (albeit with empty pins), but I'm not 100% sure. If any of you have done powered to manual seat conversions let me know. Looks like I'll be posting one of the pairs of seats for sale too. I have waaay too many things to get rid of now.

Today also coded in the 4.5 LCM with LED tail lights, so I retain the BOW's functionality for them - always bothered me that I couldn't have cold/hot checks for the LEDs, so now I can sleep and drive with more peace of mind. Still have to figure out triple blink and such. I also took out both mirror motors (ribbon cables) and will be transplanting them over to M-style mirrors in the future.

Thanks for offer but I don't think it will be a problem - just have to set aside some time to do it. I do have PA soft, INPA and NCS expert. Worst case I'll download NCS dummy to make it easier. I know PA soft doesn't have the ability to code in blinks. I also need to update the DME too. Probably will do it all this upcoming weekend.

Fredo - even though I hated the run-flats and replaced them on both my E92 and M3, I'm glad they saved the day for your family. But can't help wondering what the date code was on those tires? That close up picture looks like your Texas heat was "stressing" those tires!

Good observation, Pete. These are the date codes on the tires: 1519, 1519, 1519 and 1419. So they were made around April-2019.

I bought them back in Nov-2019, almost 3 years ago.

Manual ones are 9-10 lbs lighter than the ones that are powered (both have heating elements). Just under 50 lbs. I've noticed that the manual ones have noticeably less range of motion - can't move backwards as much by probably 2-3 inches. It's significant. I'm a manlet, so it doesn't bother me, but an interesting observation.

BMW E85 Z4 M-Sport seats. 2003-2008 era. These are super nice to have in the ZHP as they match the OEM style of our cars yet were the inspiration for the modern seats in today's M cars so they do not look out-of-date. They are also plug and play (memory, heat, movement all work) and don't require rail adapters. Everyone that gets into my car compliments them - even my mom who knows nothing about cars nor cares for them.

I really like the black fabric versions. If I keep them I'd pair them up with the black fabric centers I have for the rears (from original fabric/alcantara set) and use leather rear side bolsters and a leather bottom cushion I have for my current all black leather interior. The rear interior would very closely match the fronts and would be a very unique OEM setup (mix-match leather/fabric hybrid).

I've never seen that fabric before and I love it. Unfortunately the upholstery shops close to me are way too expensive. They all quote around $4k. Gone are the days of re-upholstery costing $1k or less. Materials alone is close to $1k or more.

Messed up my sideskirt. Parked far away at Costco up to a corner spot on the passenger's side, and didn't pull far enough forward before turning the wheel when leaving. I blame the cold I have for this.

Ultimately I don't think it's worth bringing to get new paintwork done since it's so low and touch-up did an okay job, but god damn.

Sorry to hear about the side skirt mishap, you did a great job with the touch up though. I'm fairly certain if you took that side skirt off yourself and took it to a paint shop, it wouldn't cost that much to get fixed properly and repainted.

I have this car cover/garage almost 2 months now. Better than my previous car cover. Which gathers dust under the cover. I could open through front or the back. Both ends are lockable. My daughter calls it my homeless shelter. At least my neighbors are friendly enough. Also as long as the rear is not in the ROW.

I have never done anything as extensive as this by myself and am amazed by just how much good information can be found through fellow forum members as well as on the Internet. First of all my thanks to Jon (JupiterBMW) for his detailed TPMS retrofit DIY, Vas for pointing out the hose I was searching for, to Roylan for giving me the opportunity to buy his G.A.S. CCV Replacement Kit and to Botond for lending me his ramps which was a big help. I have always been amazed by the car community and how people involved come to help when help is needed. I hope this will always continue because we all share a common interest and I am always helping whenever someone reaches out to me.

So with that said this is the list of everything I have done during this recent maintenance/repair project:

- VANOS Oil Feed Line replacement with new Banjo bolts and crush washers
- Cooling system hard line replacement (upper and lower) with original OEM BMW part

The F31 got its first DIY projects last month. I retrofitted an iDrive 6 setup out of a wrecked 2018 440i to get CarPlay and newer functionality. Nice upgrade and straightforward to install and code. MY2016 was the last year to get iDrive 4 without CarPlay, 2017+ got updated components.

Less fun was replacing some parts on the DEF system. I had a code for the heating line, turns out it's fairly common on N47 diesels in cold climates. It's a plastic line that has a heating element running through it, and it's the length of the car. Pretty shoddy design but thankfully super easy to replace. It was cracked and leaking at the DEF injector. More info here at F30post (https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1858307).

The dealer quoted me $3k parts and 6h labor to replace an absurd number of parts in the DEF system, and it turns out all I needed to clear the code was to replace that line. I replaced the DEF injector for peace of mind, it ended up being $375 and 1h30 of DIY work at a rent-a-lift nearby.

The diesel emissions system is unfortunately living up to its reputation - decided to repair it this time since it was easy and cheap, but a delete stays in the cards if there are any further issues...

Helped my friend get his 1986 Carrera 3.2 back on the road after sitting for 5 years. Oil & trans fluid change, and we ended up having to siphon out all the old gas which was quite the shade of orange. Brake fluid was surprisingly still very clean even after sitting for some time so we skipped that, but maybe we should go back and do it another weekend.

I got the privilege of driving it and ooooooh boy.... been watching youtube vids and scouring classifieds the whole day today. He wanted to pay me, but I just told him to let me know when he plans to go for a drive in the twisties :devilish

The engine just sings above 4k, if you only know how to drive manual it's not good enough - the 915 gearbox takes some getting used to (though this car has 156k miles). No way I can afford one now, but I want first right of refusal if my friend (72 yo) wants to sell it... but I bet it'll go to one of his sons :crying

It's a small one but I discretely installed a wireless charger + phone mount. I'm horrible with directions so I'm always using google maps, and have Spotify pulled up - initially got the quad lock for my motorcycle, it's extended to my road bike and now the E46. Convenient to just pop the phone on the mount in 2 seconds and charge, rather than spend time pulling the cable out!

Car has 185k miles approx. Had driveshaft off for CSB replacement, new Rein CSB dead after 25k miles, noticed a bit of notching in the CV joint. What is common opinion on this? Try to re-grease or toss it and replace with new?

Got new shoes for the ZHP today - Michelin Pilot Sport AS 4's. Costco Tire Center also installed internal TPMS sensors, so I can monitor tire pressure/temperature in real-time with alerts.

Had the weirdest freaking dream last night - dreamt my car got hit, but not badly. It got fixed, but then somehow I traded it in for a Lexus LX SUV (of all the things...), that got hit as well, and I was arguing with the people that hit it. Then got super super sad and started missing my car.

Nice job! Did you have BMW connected drive beforehand? and if so, do you have it now? From my understanding, the telecommunication computer and behavior changed from iDrive 4 to iDrive 6 (3G for data and dedicated GPS to 4G/LTE on iDrive 6). I read different things about the interoperability of the two TCMs.

If you have any interest, I am currently doing R&D to retrofit iDrive 6 into my E46. I am still looking for someone with an F3x/F2x who I can send a research kit to. I just did the same damn thing the other day leaving the post office. I completely forgot I parked next to the curb in my haste to get away from all the crazies. I hit the curb with my front wheel (guess I backed in pretty deep) and then shredded my jack point off...grrr. Thankfully, no rim damage. I think I bent a tie rod and now my alignment is a little towed in and to the right, but it certainly could have been worse.

I'm going through a similar pain right now, where you get this taste and you start imaging this life with a Porsche. I got to drive a Cayman GT4 on Sonoma Raceway and have had a strong thirst for Porsche ever since. I then got to drive a 992 for a couple days, and I hated it! Granted, it was a base Carrera with no sporty options. I'd go around a corner at like 3/10ths at about 2.5k in 2nd gear, give it some gas and I had to add more steering input to do the same level of steering! It was not a comfortable feeling.

A year or two ago, I got to drive a 67' 911 E, which didn't do it for me. Perhaps its a generational thing but the shifter was unsatisfying. I also drove a 997 Carrera S. It was someone else's car and it was around town, but man I loved the feel of that thing. The brakes, the steering, the noises...it was kind of a perfect amount of horsepower too. I'd have to spend a day with one to really decide if I love it more than a....E92 M3 or a Cayman. My problem with the Cayman is that once you buy it, you don't touch it really. Porsche gets it so good from the factory, you just become a stock Cayman owner. There's nothing wrong with that, I mean I LOVE the car, but there's no story behind it. I feel like my current car has a story, and each mod was my choice, making it so individualized.

My ZHP has otherwise been playing Toyota - just driving. I have a clunk on the rear axle and I have no idea what it is. I sent it to a shop, waited a month, and many monies later, its still there. Everything is Poly, so I have no idea what it could be. It makes me a little nervous if I'm honest. I'm just at a loss as to what to do about it. As I mentioned above, I hit a curb and messed up my alignment. I think that makes it the most opportune time to install my M3 suspension :)

I'm back to working on my $2k ZHP. Did a lot to get it ready as I want to do some ice racing this winter. So far:
New FCABs
New tie rod assemblies
New radiator and hoses
Installed quick-latch hood pins


The hood pins and radiator were unexpected but very necessary. I smelled coolant after coming out of storage, and the hood latches broke at the same time. Since this is going to be a track car, I skipped replacing the latches and cables and went straight to drilling holes.

I'll be finishing up some rear suspension bushings later this week.

Wife’s 09 Clubman S was parked outside at the start of the winter blast, 4 days ago it was moved into the garage where it has been sitting since it wasn’t being driven and family was in town. Went to start it yesterday and it wouldn’t start. Dead battery. Put a new interstate battery in which I know to be good, went to start the car and it won’t start. Since it’s been in the garage it cranks slower than normal but won’t start. No codes, all fuses in the bay good.

Indy seems to think there was some moisture in the system that caused one or more injectors to freeze open. Gonna give it another 2-3 days since it’s supposed to be in the 40-50s temp wise and then try to restart it after everything, including the mini, thaws out. Hopefully that resolves the issue. I have grown to hate her car so much after having done so much to keep it going (new turbo system, new vacuum system, new high pressure fuel pump, new thermostat, new VCG, brakes, proper oil changes etc etc etc). Car is a two owner 74k mile car (bought it with maybe mid-50k miles a few years ago), it’s pretty clean. May be time to get rid of it.

Same here! Luckily, rim wasn't touched, the sidewall of the tire just has a few scuffs. I eyeballed the rear toe and thought it was slightly asymmetric from side to side, but the car doesn't crabwalk. But, I do so little mileage that my tires will probably go bad with age rather than tread at this point :dunno

Argh, I'd love even just a Cayman GTS 4.0. Or even a 996 C4S, don't even want the AWD but want the turbo widebody with that sexy rear lightbar. But LOL why do I do this to myself - lust after cars with known issues (IMS bearing, bore scoring for the 996, RACP for the E46) eventually buy one, then have to deal with it (RACP in my case). I think if I'm in a position to get one, I'd just add an air-cooled Porsche (those do not have said issues) alongside the E46.

Maybe I'm just getting old (not even, haha) - or more like my interests change. I'm not really into track days like I was a year-ish ago. The Carrera I drove was objectively shitty in certain ways, I totally agree with the shifter since it had such a long throw, and the 915 gearbox grinded slightly in certain situations if you were hard on it. Yet somehow that thing just made such an impact on my mind that I can't stop thinking about it!

I'd like to try an E92 M3 someday. You're lucky to have the opportunity to drive so many cool cars, I'd like to diversify my car-driving experience :rofl

Same, in the past year it's literally been 1 oil change, adding a bike rack, and that's it. I've been putting off a leaky VCG for the past year and I think it's about time I replace it though. Can't complain, never done it once ever since I got it in 2015, and am curious to see how clean (or not clean) the top-end is

Finally got around to getting the zhp back on the road. It's been sitting since Sept when I had the overheating episode. At first thought it was the 1.4bar radiator cap, topped off with 50/50 coolant then drove it. Nope wasn't it. Parked the car for a while since life got busy. I suspected thermostat, but for some reason I also suspected the water pump was bad. Order both, along with some new hoses so I don't have to deal with o-rings that might be compression set.

Surprised when I removed the water pump and found the impeller was sheered off and broken into a few pieces. The bearings feel good and without play.

I got as much of the plastic out as I could. Used some distilled water and flushed what I could via the upper radiator hose and coolant tank connection while the pump, thermostat and hoses were disconnected.

Nice to have the car back on the road. Drove it around for 30 mins yesterday and no problems. :fingerscrossed

edit to add: water pump has about 33k miles.

Today was an attempt to reactivate the failed headliner adhesive with steam. That process did not work. Checking the exposed C pillars, there doesn’t appear to be any adhesive left.

Next step at some point in the distant time, I will have all of it redone professionally at a high cost.

If triple blink is what you're after, you may want to consider getting a bluebus bluetooth module instead. Aside from providing bluetooth connectivity to your car (and integrating the steering wheel controls, head unit display, etc) it also allows you to change a few vehicle parameters such as the number of turn signal blinks. I set it to 3 initially, and then changed it to 5. I think you can go all the way up to 8 blinks. The changes are made using the buttons on your business CD head unit, and it's also compatible with the factory nav head unit.

So I am trying to troubleshoot a "leak" in the floor of my ZHP :(

My 2004 ZHP is not my daily driver anymore so it sits more than it is driven. But it is my airport car because it can fit in a small(er) parking spots.

So my last trip during the holiday, when I returned it was super cold so I turned on the rear defroster. It did not defrost the whole window, only little "strips". I thought the defroster was going, but when I got home and investigated, the issue was lots of moisture on the INSIDE of the rear window.

But the back deck was not wet, nor were any of the seats. I lifted up the floormats on the passenger side (I have the original rubber BMW mats) and nothing front or rear. But on the driver's side it was sopping wet both front and rear!

The windows weren't "cracked" open a bit or anything like that, and if they were, I would have expected wet seats. I went home and tried to soak up the water with towels. There was quite a bit of water in the carpeting. To really dry it out, I laid down paper towels and then spread out rice on the towels, covered it with another layer of paper towels, and then put the floor mats on top of the whole thing, trying to force the moisture into the rice kernels. After two days, lots of soggy rice in between the paper towels!

I then took a hair dryer to dry it off completely.

So now the frustrating news. I took the car out for a drive on a rainy day and checked the floor boards again the next day. Sopping wet again in the front driver area, but nothing (thankfully) in the rear driver area.

I think I have a crack in my floorboard and am going to check it out.

Has anyone had this happen to them? I don't think it is coming from the engine compartment, because the "top" of the carpeting in the footwell area is dry. it is only the bottom that is wet.

Mine can be welded in or epoxied, but I am under the impression that once you cut the "trunk trim" to get to the top of the subframe bolts, there's a T shaped bump for "rigidity" you have to sand and weld down first. Could be a fun project. But since you're in the area, let's definitely do something soon. Photo shoot, come meet my CCA gang, if you need/want a hand with some projects, don't be stranger! I'll PM you though if we get good weather for a car meet, and the LCM is as good as yours :)

I've been putting off doing the valve cover gasket for 1.5 years, but finally got around to ordering the parts and getting it in. I was really curious how clean the top-end is, and was pleasantly surprised (note, intake cam baffle was removed in the below pic):

Also found a good deal on a Hotchkis front sway bar, so swapped that out with my ST bar. Both are 30 mm, but the ST one is solid, so there's a good bit of weight savings. In the process I moved it from STIFF AF (closest to bushings) to softest (farthest from bushings) for ride comfort.

Lastly, swapped the air filter for the first time in my ownership lol - why the hell are there like 3 separate things to take apart and like 8 screws to swap it out? Honestly, one of the most complicated air filter swaps I've come across... but I'm never swapping out this intake for anything else ;)

Yeah, credit goes to the previous owner, I re member him saying he used seafoam every year or so. I don't do that, but I use Rotella and change often - I'm doing it once a year, so this time around it was after just 6k km, and now at 365k.

Also hahaha yeah Iooked that up, wtf?! Also apparently the 992 is similar, it's in the right rear wheel well and you have to take the wheel off to replace it.

I suppose air filter intervals aren't that often, but the BMWP intake is so much more involved than a stock airbox with zero tools and 2 minutes lol

My intermittent wiper was not functioning, but it's fixed now (fingers crossed).

Symptoms: When the stalk is placed into the intermittent setting it would wipe once, but then not again. I would adjust the sensitivity knob on the stalk and it would wipe once.

Actions:
1) I tried unplugging the Rain Light Sensor (RLS) and plugging back in (lol), but it still didn't work.
2) I swapped the RLS with the one in my m3 and magically it works in both cars when tested with a spray bottle. We'll see if it's a fluke now that the malfunctioning RLS is in the m3.

Now I just need to figure out the wiring modifications for the auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and garage door opener into the zhp. I'm not so good with the electrical stuff.

I used M1 0w-40, and added a quart of the HPL engine cleaner oil (link (https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/high-performance-lubricants-engine-cleaner.347347/)). The engine I have appeared to be very clean when I originally swapped it in, but I was curious about this cleaner oil so I'll just try it. I don't think my engine or piston rings are gunked up, my car doesn't burn any oil between oil changes, so it could be just throwing away some money.

I try to do 5k oil change intervals.

Removing the airbox from the car is the same as stock and super quick, but replacing the filter is another story. You have to remove 2 screws to get the filter housing off the top half of the box, then a further 6 screws holds the filter housing halves together:

For how often you have to change the filter and how pretty the box is, it's fine lol. But it's for sure waaaaaay more involved than a lot of other cars

Ordered a set of Dinan N-Series Performance Ignition Coils - Blue (D650-0004) from Turner Motorsport on Wed at 8 PM. They arrived via UPS at noon today/Sunday. I usually avoid buying from the Turner/ECS/Pelican empire, but the price was as good as other vendors and they were in stock and qualified for free shipping. Easy to switch out (have some dielectric grease on hand, to use a small dab to keep them from sticking to the spark plugs). Smooth running again!

Three of the four rubber trim cover spacers (11-12-1-730-352) for the plastic engine trim cover are missing so I''ll order/pick them up tomorrow, then button it all up once in hand.

Replaced the pulleys. Recent rain and humidity had them squeeking. Went to a Pick a Part junk yard with my younger son yesterday looking for 6 or so items. Was his first time and my 1st in 20 years. Wasn't very successful, but a good experience regardless. Only brought home a driver's seat receptacle as the one in my coupe doesn't seem to hold the clip securely these days, darn thing pops out while driving. :|

I topped off my oil to learn my valve cover is leaking. Someone gave me an M56 valve cover, but I'm not sure I care to go through with that retrofit. I still have this nasty rear end clunk, but when going through my papers for the year (tax season vibes), I noticed I got two alignments within 600 miles where the rear toe was way off. In fact, all my rear toe alignments were super off. I strongly suspect I broke the turner motorsport aspherical RTABs.

That being said, anyone know where I can get an RTAB tool? Massive progress on my iDrive retrofit, but I suspect I already shared that here...

Hah, yes, you’re absolutely free to feel how f*cling scary and awful it is. I’m drawing a strong conclusion based on how much my toe varies between alignments. Perhaps when I ripped my sway bar, I also broke the aluminum RTAB. It feels like the entire rear axle moves forward and backward, but usually drivetrain load makes this phenomenon hard to feel until you clutch out, throw it in neutral and drive on a dumpy bumpy uneven road. Entire rear feels like it walks. I suspect the load of the wheel help keeps the RTAB pegged one way or another, and with no load, it’s “variable rear wheel steer.” The floor was reinforced with no visible cracks within 1,000 miles of purchase.

I topped off my oil to learn my valve cover is leaking. Someone gave me an M56 valve cover, but I'm not sure I care to go through with that retrofit. I still have this nasty rear end clunk, but when going through my papers for the year (tax season vibes), I noticed I got two alignments within 600 miles where the rear toe was way off. Nope, drilled some holes on the underside of the trunk to get it in. The self-tapping screws I bought were too small, so I drilled + tapped for the included fine-thread screws. Can't torque them up too high or they'll strip, but I snugged it up and gave it a yank, seemed decently solid. I'll probably replace those with larger self-tapping screws, I have those on order.

Also, lol what needs fab'd - assuming we can't just CAD and print a piece?

just drill hole into the metal. use rivnuts in the holes (they are rivets with threads in them so you can use screws, can get tool kit for $40 on amazon probabl), then mount them. use some L-brackets if necessary for your amps. I love rivnuts, use them all the time for shit where I can't get to the other side to put a nut on.

My buddy says I should 3d print this too. I have two audio amps and the idrive unit to mount in the left side of the trunk. But the width of Ann these pieces are near equal to the width of that cavity. Each amp is like 6-8lbs. I feel to support that much weight up high (one piece above idrive, 4” high, and the next amp 6.5” high or so. That gives the weight a lot of leverage and force applied to the bottom mounts. Because the space isn’t square, it’s hard to map out a mount to one of the vertical points as well. If you have a design in mind that would be strong enough 3d printed I’m all ears.

Also being over the rear suspension, the forces of quick compression drastically increase the stress on the structure too. I wouldn’t be worried if this was a static mount not in a car.

Received my cheap inflatable lumbar pillow - kinda sucks that the hose is ever so slightly too short (routed through sub-strap hole to under the seat) to reach it and inflate/deflate while driving. Could replace the hose with a longer one, or just set and forget - probably do the latter lol since it's just me

Edit: I ordered enough Valve Cover nuts to refresh the ones that are currently on my valve cover as well as a bunch of parts associated with the Secondary Air Pump system to refresh this as well.

Last week I did ~1000 miles road trip on my wife's zhp. It was nice to test the suspension that was overhauled 4 months ago. It is such a great car! During the trip, I cracked 180k miles. While I had the valve cover off I decided to give it a good cleaning, took my time cleaning the gasket seating surfaces on my engine and applied RTV where it was needed.

I noticed the previous time this maintenance was done no RTV was used. New nuts and rubber grommets were also used to replace the old hard ones.

All part of getting my ZHP ready for it's upcoming trip to Florida this summer[emoji41]

What kind of RTV did you use? BMW uses some kind of Red colored typed of RTV. Do not recall the name of their RTV.
