View Full Version : What did you do for your ZHP/ BMW / MINI today? #2
I haven't driven it for a couple of weeks and It's basically been sitting outside at work. Still haven't driven it since I had my friend drive it home for me for the long weekend... to be honest, I miss it so much!
Also in following my friend home at night, I realized a) my right tail light is permanently on, and b) the turn signals are permanently on the dim setting unless being used. I suspect it has something to do with me disconnecting power to the trailer wiring converter that I installed. Will re-connect and check again.

Very nice! How bad was the manual swap? Did you change the diff too? Post up some pics!!
Alright I’ll post a few photos at lunch here. We kept the LSD out as it was seaping a bit from one of the output shafts. Nothing crazy but it is under warranty.
Edit: What photos do you want? Here's one of my valve train. I am very happy, heh.

^ that's a clean engine.
I'll echo what other's have said: that's a lot for a weekend. Well done.
Yeah, that valvetrain is *chef's kiss*
Not much by any means - just covered up some scrapes on the underside of my car from the road trip and a couple massive speedbumps. Was surprised at how bad the scrapes were - my car isn't even that low!

I inspected my rear suspension as I try to work out some wiggly-ness in the road behavior. Springs looked good. RTA bushings looked dry but I couldn't get any play there. Might be time for a rear suspension overhaul regardless. The car is just shy of 190k.
Also adjusted my parking brake shoes, as the parking brake was essentially useless. Now it's working great, but it was a hell of a job with the 15mm spacers on the hubs.

Did a Brake Fluid Flush using ATE S4, Transmission Fluid Flush with RedLine MTL and Differential Fluid with Redline 75w-90.
Noticed my oil pan gasket is moist. Beginning stages for a leak. Ordered a a replacement gasket and new oil pan bolts. Might as well replace the gasket to the oil sensor so I also included that to my order with FCP Euro. This job will entail some professional help. Will probably do this on my next oil change. No biggie. As long as my parts are ready.

Can you recommend a set of engine mounts? Nothing stiff but comparable to factory mounts. Please provide info such as P/Ns for mounts and steering coupler.
How can I tell if steering coupler is about go kaput? Or is this a preventive maintenance. I am also thinking of doing the steering reservoir and associated hoses.

BMW Genuine Part items. If anything better and not stiff.....Corteco sounds good per reviews.
Any good on Lemforder?
Would the Transmission Mounts also a requirement to be replaced? Or this is a Preventive Maintenance?

I verified your part numbers for engine mounts and steering coupler are correct. My mechanic recommends Corteco engine mounts as well, I think that’s what he installed on my car.
My ZHP has 152k miles and needs new differential bushings. I have a clunking noise, I think that’s the reason.
Not sure about your other questions, let’s see if some else can chime in.

Genuine for steering coupler
I like UUC black trans mounts. For OE go lemforder. M3 version is double cost and feels the same but likely will last a little longer. I typically like Corteco or Febi (Bilstein) for rubber mounts and Lenforder when a bearing/ball joint is involved.
Dexron III ATF for steering fluid. This is what I prefer:

At least need 2. But I didn’t check on my rack swap
Corteco or Lemforder brand engine mounts are both good options. I prefer the E46 M3 ones over the non-m parts since they are full rubber vs being fluid filled. Consider them an oe+ upgrade for non-m cars. Last time I ordered a set cost was roughly the same.

Alright. What did I do to my ZHP….
- manual swap to 6spd
- LF30 conversion - requirement for a future project
- front subframe swap with old car
- engine mounts
- coilovers
- spark plugs
- mechanical tensioner conversion…because the hydraulic failed.
- UUC exhaust
- subframe reinforcement
- WP, thermostat, expansion tank. I had new rad hoses but forgot from all this work
In the midst of all that, I also admired the absolute cleanest BMW valvetrain either me or my friends have ever seen…damn. Photos later for sure.
Consequentially, a lot of this was possible by picking off my old car. So the old car got a
- front subframe swap
- suspension swap with the ZHP
- removed manual transmission and exhaust system.
Who knows what else. Hell of a weekend. Bribes two of my friends to make this all possible.Wow, awesome!

Like I said, buying tonight. I’m between the PS4S and the Potenza Sport. The Goodyear Eagle F1 is the fastest dry but value for money seems to be Potenza. I’m not sure about availability but they get here when they get here.
I honestly hydroplane every day it rains on my way to work but usually at normal cruising speeds. I’m sick in the head and I kind of enjoy it. But I mean my current tires are just awful, 6 years old.
I want to review this before I hit send, especially the video as he goes over how beat up each tire gets at the limit. These will be on track this year: https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/2021-Tyre-Reviews-UHP-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm

Well I watched the video and the consensus is that the Bridgestone absolutely disintegrates on track. So for $200, I don't have to buy a new set of tires every other track day which makes them cheaper in the long run. So now that I want a tire everyone else wants, now I am hitting supply chain issues.

Don’t get PS4S if you like fun!!! Once I put them on I couldn’t slide or drift, even in the rain they won’t let go. I used to be able to enjoy low speed 15-30mph drifts but now I have to hammer the corners hard to even have it let loose. There is way too much grip in these tires…no good. I ran the Indy's over two sets of tires and convinced two of my friends to do the same. I mean I don't know what performance you experienced. The general consensus among us three was that dry grip was great but wet grip was awful. Stiff sidewall gave such great feedback and they told you when you were close to the limit but really fell apart with wet performance. But yeah now I will be tracking more and I only want one set of wheels so I'm looking for the 300TW category.
But you could beat on the Indy's constantly them and they would just last forever. They knew how to take abuse. But the Indy's are $200/tire, so OTD price of Indy's compared to any runner up of a PS4S was like $60-$80 difference. I was dead set on the Bridgestone but if you saw that video I linked above, when they all did the same mileage, most tires lost less than 6% tread while the Bridgestone lost 40%. Under 10 laps! So with that information, I decided the premium for PS4S would save me money long term if I have a track heavy summer as I anticipate.

Hah, well for me the car ONLY likes to play when you hammer the corners! Gotta set your sway bars, and stiffen up the rear. 235hp just doesn't do much for any twitching in a straight line (except if it's raining apparently). But who knows! Maybe I'll do a big horsepower this year...

That's odd, dry and wet grip has been almost the same for me. Tested during Touge, autocross and street driving. I'm on my 4th set at the moment. Unfortunate about the price, in 18" they are only $150 per tire where I live.

Here's one: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tests/chartDisplay.jsp?ttid=235

Alright I promised a status update. My YouTube channel (and myself) is not big enough for it to matter if I spill what I’m up to. I hate doing this journey alone and I love everyone here.
My last pic was some M240 seats I’m putting into my car. They need a wake up signal and so the arduino is there to mimic and F series wake up. I just don’t have the correct signal yet. I will make a plug and play solution so anyone can do this and retain airbags and seat memory, bracket and all.
Since I will already have the emulation layer, I decided I’ll retrofit iDrive 6 in there too. And since I’ll have iDrive I will also retrofit TPMS to get tire temperatures. That’s about as much as I’ll reveal there. If you can believe it, there’s more.
So all these things will require a lot of new wires, so I’m designing a secondary harness right now. I’ll have to pull up the carpet to make it clean. I don’t want to do it a second time.
I’ve regularly touted on my channel I want to make my car faster than an E92 M3. I can’t do that with this motor, so I’m also going to pre-wire my car for the engine I’ve chosen while I’m dropping a harness in. I now have three projects sharing a harness, so there’s a ton of specific pin outs I want to make sure I get right. I’ll be creating a test board that all the plugs go into to make sure everything is correct before I drop it in. If any of this sounds cool, www.youtube.com/builtforredlinedefinitely check out my channel because I’ll post my entire journey there. I’m also really thankful to the support I have behind me on this project from a couple BMW techs, retrofitting pro’s, and my local car friends. This is a massive undertaking and I appreciate the props with every step as they help me keep moving forward.
I ordered new wheels. I have to bring in my spare spindle time the wheel shop with the M4 caliper on it with the M4 disc to see if the new wheels clear (I suspect not), and if not, how large a spacer I need. I need to get the calipers painted and longer front brake lines with an L bracket (vendors anyone?). So yeah, I’m also retrofitting the M4 front brakes. I’m using an early E46 M3 master to retain proper brake bias.
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk. Happy holidays. Feels good to just kind of share.

Totally fair, I understand. I’ll post to Instagram too. 2022 will be my year!
My vision for the build is that the E46 design feels timeless. A little understated. The big drive for a newer car for me would be technology and power. So I figured, it’s cheaper, more unique and more fun to just bring power and technology to my E46. I also just love the way E46 feels to drive. It’s why it’s the only car I’ve ever owned. I was hooked after the first one.

Speaking of bringing tech to the E46, this is on my shopping list and based on your description you might enjoy it too: https://id4motion.shop/blogs/bmw-3-series-e46-digital-cluster/bmw-e46-digital-gauge-cluster-signals
Once it comes out I'll get it to have the race skin (https://id4motion.shop/products/bmw-race-design?_pos=1&_sid=3a43da204&_ss=r), I don't care at all for the other skins.

No it completely replaces the stock cluster. Fully plug n play. Another reason why it's so attractive since going back to stock is so easy.

Would you find it equally as exciting if there was like a $150 kit that could show you oil temp on your existing cluster? Maybe you triple tap the Subwoofer icon or something and then oil temp shows up for your trip computer or maybe it replaces your outdoor temp reading. Would something like that be just as interesting?

Genuine for steering coupler
I like UUC black trans mounts. For OE go lemforder. M3 version is double cost and feels the same but likely will last a little longer. I typically like Corteco or Febi (Bilstein) for rubber mounts and Lenforder when a bearing/ball joint is involved.
Dexron III ATF for steering fluid. This is what I prefer:

I looked into Hagerty for an E30 I purchased last year that I wanted to treat as a daily driver while still being able to get what I paid for it in the event it's totaled (spoiler: lots more than book value). They wouldn't do what I wanted. I found a local insurance agent with Farmer's and she got me a policy with Safeco with an Agreed Value for the purchase price. The "Agreed Value" bit is key.

I don't believe you can get an agreed value policy from Hagerty (or maybe any of the collector insurers) for a daily-driven, non-garaged car with a driver under 21 years of age. I had Hagerty for years with my old stuff (no claims experience, thankfully!) but looked at Grundy & American Collectors Insurance. USAA works with American Collectors so that's where I went.

Yeah... my car used to be a daily, but I have access to company cars and mostly WFH. And then I got a motorcycle, and had the lighbulb thought of "hmmmmm..... can I use my motorcycle/company cars as the 'daily driver'?" Called Hagerty and asked - it sounds like an odd situation so I clarified with the agent multiple times, but he assured me that it was fine to use the motorcycle as the 'other vehicle'. In Hieu's case he also has the Tesla, so I don't see why Hagerty would reject him.

I have a 5-clutch 3.15 LSD from my last E46 before I was hit. I replace a seeping outer seal but my new e46 needs diff bushings. So I got the seal replaced and once I do the diff bushings I will take that opportunity to put in the LSD! I forgot my ramp, I’ll have to reach out to the manufacturer. Diffs online. Absolute chap. State doesn’t allow it. I’m somewhat public that I have other plans for a power plant, so I’m not going to really touch the motor beyond rejuvenating it. It’s not the design that bothers me but just all the stubborn clips and obscene yanking and mess that ensues. I’m a clean freak. Sometimes with cars I suffer on that front, but I never mind putting in some hard work :)

Local indy did the following:
New coolant tank. (Was showing coolant code periodically. Turns out the coolant tank had broken on the inside, and while not leaking, the piece was blocking the flow. It was good it did not get out of the coolant tank.)
New hose sensor
New mass flow sensor. (he tried cleaning it first and did not provide correct air-fuel mix profile)
Before repairs, the car had a slight stumble idling on cold mornings and would throw a bank 1, bank 2 code about once a month.
It runs like new now. Last fall the DISA was rebuilt and the difference was noticeable when accelerating. The recent Mass Flow Sensor replacement does not seem to have changed the above 1500 rpm experience much, if any. The difference is seen in idling and less than 1500 rpm experience.
Note: It took almost two weeks to get a new coolant tank. Supply chain issues are reaching down to E46 components now.

Let Permatex cure for 24 hours and took her for a ride. I'm really liking the short shifter. Feel more appropriate for the ZHP. Rebuilding the shifter did not solve the notchy shifts into 1st and 2nd. Are ZHPs notchy?
The Permatex held up well. No leaks noted. Time will tell if holds up. I can update anyone interested, just let me know.

Some more euro snobbery for my touring. The is a mistmatch between bracket and triangle case. Bracket is from e46, while triangle is from F series. I got triangle for free, so I am not to concern about triangle being loose in the bracket. I will modify bracket for a more snug fit. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220225/adac2ac9109787eacb8b70c0785bbe75.jpg

2. Specialized formula. This specific gasket maker is formulated to be used for differential and transfer cases. Per Permatex, it should not break down due to friction modifiers found in gear oil.
3. Availability. I originally did not plan to remove the differential. But once I knee-deep under the car, I said F'it, and went after it. I was able to buy the gasket maker at my local Autozone.
While I did have the Ultra Black and Red RTV on hand, I felt more comfortable with a gasket maker specifically formulated for my use.

Tried to prewire my car for the M240 seat swap into my E46, but the pins seem to be, seriously, 1mm too large and require an obscene amount of pressure to get into the plug. I am doing a heated seat retrofit while I’m at it. Needless to say I am having my friend who was in the car audio and alarm industry for years to help me get the pins in and get the wire set up around my car. Seats should be in by tomorrow EOD.

Finally got the new battery installed. Ended up using super 3M to just stick the included brackets to the chassis battery bracket. The battery just clicks into place and can be easily removed when necessary. That alone is probably enough but the top bracket fits too, so getting the battery secured was much easier than I thought it would be.

Can I ask what the price was, and what was the advantage over a standard battery, weight savings?
Price was $360 shipped. It weighs just over 5lbs so if you compare that to the standard battery (55lbs, 60lbs?) the weight savings are massive. It was a little bit more expensive than what I was looking for (~$250) but the cost to weights savings ratio on this is quite honestly through the roof, so it was an easy choice in the end. (Thanks @ZHPizza for the tip and help).

Just changed out the hydraulic trunk struts with new Stabilis units. I wasn't sure it would make much difference, but it sure does.
Our trunks are heavy, especially with the tool kit loaded. I guess I'd gotten used to my trunk slamming if you just let it drop from higher than about 6 inches. My drive-thru dry-cleaners likes to give it an extra shove too - drives me up the wall! But the new struts dampen it nicely, so even with a full drop it just closes with a controlled solid "snick".

for me it was the whining noise from the old struts. No more, but i almost miss it now :(
Installed the replacement driver's side mirror. It's amazing how much I use it, and it wasn't apparent until I didn't have one.

Getting very close to my weight goals, if I can hit 3053lbs curb weight (CSL weight) I'll be very happy. Hopefully saving weight off the front end will also get me back closer to 50/50 weight distribution.

Good thing I've been keeping a list:
-Rear sound deadening removed
-Armrest delete
-Euro center console/tray
-Lightweight HVAC housing
-Spare tire delete
-Spare jack delete
-Wheel chock delete
-Grab handle delete plates
-Rear headrests delete
-Hood insulation delete
-Pillars sound deadening removed
-Floor mats removed
-Speakers removed
-Radio delete plate
-H/K and bass amp removed
-Dashboard carpet removed
-Z4 steering wheel
-Exhaust support removed
I also started out with the lightest spec (slicktop, non-folding, halogen base model sedan) which helps a ton. I think manual seats, carbon hood and an empty tank should get me into CSL territory easily. The list is long but at first glance, the car looks and feels stock which was the main goal (Clubsport type build).

160 miles. Just had the oil pan gasket replaced. At the same time, had the oil level sensor gasket/O-rings replaced. Cleaned out the inside bowl of the oil pan. New 5w-40 Liqui Moly Leichtlauf Full Synthetic and oil filter
Replaced the engine mounts.
Replaced the power steering hose lines, reservoir, pipes, hose clamps, gasket rings and fluid.
Noticed a very small leak in the underside of the radiator. Last time changed was around 118 miles. Next on the list a full cooling system replacement.

You just disassemble them and clean up plastics, some toothbrush, 10mins of your time to get them near new state. Then replace the emblem, nearly 100% match, same size, slightly less border visibility, and it’s OEM meaning longevity much higher than Chinese fakes.

below. Starter was $328 and took a while to arrive. Parts prices are experiencing inflation and supply issues like everything else these days.
It is amazing how much faster the new starter is spinning compared to the full six years of ownership. Apparently I’ve been on the edge of starter failure for a long, long time. It is a testament to how easily the engine starts with bump starting or a dragging starter.

The side moldings (mouldings?) on my Imola Red 330Ci '05 ZHP had peeling clearcoat. Since BMW doesn't sell these parts painted anymore I was going to be way over $1,000 buying new parts and painting or sanding and painting in Socal - at least that was the case everywhere I tried to get an estimate.
Because the purpose of these things is to prevent door dings really I decided to try a wrap on them. The closest color I have found (so far) was 3M 2080/1080 "Gloss Red Metallic". It's a -slight- shade off from the original worn 2005 paint (imagine any paint might be to a degree as well) and has a bit more of a metallic sheen to it than Imola red does. But for this application, I'm pretty happy with the result and curious to see how it holds up.
This was the exact stuff I used https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008OIVGZI/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 ... Application was to sand and smooth out the old rails, clean with rubbing alcohol peel and stick and heat gun. Total cost $18.99 for 6 rails.
Thought I'd post in case anyone else had any interest in giving this a try. It's not -perfect- but am pretty sure it's a better result than I'd have gotten painting myself.

I've got some 3M Silver wrap that I plan to use on my CF hood and trunk later this year. It's a close enough match that you can't really tell unless you're staring at it.

Nice job. But there is no way that shit costs $1000 just to get repainted. No way, I would have been able to afford having it repainted like twice + 1 more cause had to move to M3 side moldings.
edit:
got a quote from my bodyshop and he said it would be $300 to repaint. That's how much I figured it would be. Is that 1k for new parts + paint?

Haven't posted any actual things I've done for my ZHP lately, so here I go.
I replaced the alternator while on vacation after it decided to go out on me.
I bought new wheels and tires, pics coming very soon. They look sooooooo good. Went for 18x9 square on Ps4s. This is my first Michelin summer tire and wow, I don't know how I'd ever go back. I now have a TPMS light and some idiot replaced the center switch for some buttons for the heated seats but no TPMS button :).
M240i seats are in but I can't move them, lol. I need to find a home for my arduino.
Installed adjustable front control arm bushings. Super geeky.
Grabbed an LF20 pump from the yard, looks brand new. I now have two, in case one fails. My car originally came with one, but we swapped the steering system with the one from my old car in the pursuit of saving time
Huge thanks to Will for coming in clutch and lending me some tools. I replaced my RTAB's with Turner's Monoball RTAB's.
Between the adjustable FCAB's, the monorail RTAB's and the 255 PS4S...the car has seriously transformed. It handles phenomenally. It tends to very gently oversteer at the limit, but that's how I prefer my cars to feel. It's not like a full on slide, but the entire car as a whole just slides, like the front and rear give up equally. It's very natural for me to correct that. Photo shoot soon! I'm trying to get into my flickr to update the signature. My last 01 330Ci never even made it to my sig!

My last 01 330Ci never even made it to my sig!
nice work. I need to put in my rtabs too. been sitting in a box for like 3 years lol

I think SoCal (San Diego) is just a total ripoff. But the old ones were blistered pretty bad so would have either had to sand them and paint or buy new parts and paint. Both prices were similar. If I could have found a shop to do all 6 for $300 I would have! I went to two places in person and was frustrated so did a Yelp message thing where you get lots of quotes at once and sent pictures and didn't get a single quote from about 10 shops that was less than $1,000. If someone has a specific recommendation in this region I'm all about it though! Hell I'd have driven to LA if I could have gotten a reasonable quote.

Just finished. I spent all yesterday trying to solve why my hood slowly unhinged over time. I replaced the hood side and body side of the right hinge.
Today I changed the tie rods, the steering rack and converted back to LF20.
Back when we swapped subframes from my last car, it made sense to swap it with the pump and rack which was a purple tag and LF30. So I converted back to LF20 and yellow tag

Went on track today. Tons fo great people. I set a pretty competitive time (in my opinion), but my brake pads really lost the fight. I used to love the PFC-Z pads but I clearly have outgrown them. I could do 3-4 hot laps before the brakes would get super sad. I would have to cool down for 1-2 laps before I could give them a single push lap. One time after the brakes were fading, I did a cool down lap, pit, did a lap around the pits, parked in my box and measured the brakes temps at 460 Fahrenheit, yikes!
By the end of it, I quite literally melted the pad away. I came with about 6-7mm of pad and left with a nearly unmeasurable amount of brake pad. I will be changing my pads tomorrow. Other than that the day was fantastic

Preorder pricing for id4motion's digital E46 gauge cluster was emailed out today. I was very interested, and understand there was a lot of R&D put into it, but the difference between the Standard ($1,100) and Premium ($1,588) options is almost $500 and appears to just be available skins. That's a 35% increase in price for some coding that's already done. That said, in the FAQ it says you can upgrade to an additional skin, so maybe they can be individually purchased.

There's a few issues for me with the iD4 that made me not want to get the Id4, even with the beta program discount. First, the tachometer goes counterclockwise. No E-Series or even F-series cluster has a tachometer that does this. The E46 is also ID4's first cluster that goes counter clockwise, an odd choice in my opinion.
Then there's the width. Because of packaging constraints, the screen doesn't really fill the size of the entire opening, so your coolant and gas gauge get relocated. These two changes make me feel like the design deviates too far from the E46 feel and design.
It's also very glossy as shown in their test video on E46, which I think could be an issue with sunlight.
I want to do 6WB and am ready to develop it. But I have to even test fit it first. Maybe this weekend.

Yeah, that's why I would want to make my own custom skin to make it as close to factory as possible. I thought the same thing, stupid CCW tach lol I was like that was the best looking skin, but why tf? lol
I don't think the sun will be an issue though. The M240i has a partly digital cluster and really it doesn't get that much sun. It does have a matte layer on it but I keep polishing the scratches off and eventually it'll go away. But the lights on it are like way bright enough to overcome the little light that even hits it. I'm sure if need be, we could install a matte screen protector on. Honestly, I would even take the M240i cluster. I think it looks nice. Especially the fact that it's white needles during the day, but at night it changes to red.

Yeah it was the ID4 gloss finish that made me think it wouldn’t do good with glare.
I will test fit the F3x cluster soon. I like the 2 series cluster too for different reasons, such a great classy mix of classic and modern. If I get the electronics of F3x, the 2 series will be easy. All assuming it fits in the enclosure.

Hello, Family! It's been quite a while since I've been active on here: been out on a long work trip and then busy getting the house ready to sell and move across the country this summer! Despite all that, I've done two things for my ZHP that have made me fall in love with her all over again.
First, drove this rental during my month-long work trip:
39045
Made me appreciate the ZHP so much more than I would've thought! While it was fun to mash the right pedal and hear the Hemi V8 roar every now and then, it was much too long, wide, low, and heavy for my taste! (Seriously, its front splitter scraped on everything.) Getting back in the ZHP felt like taking off a weight vest and being able to sprint miles around a track!
Second, I installed most of Turner's shifter rebuild kit (https://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-555711-turner-motorsport-shifter-rebuild-upgrade-kit-e46-330ici-6-speed/): poly rear shifter arm carrier bushing, new shifter ball bushing, and new shift rod joint (left out the Teflon oval front shifter arm carrier bushings as they didn't fit without grinding down quite a bit). Also ensured the UUC DSSR was re-installed correctly (washers where they needed to be to remove any slop in the pins). What a night-and-day difference!! Fairly sure the new shift rod joint is the biggest improvement, but the shifter finally feels like I had hoped it would back when first installing the DSSR.

Hello, Family! It's been quite a while since I've been active on here:
You and me both. It's been years since I've been on here - life got busy, but I have been recently checking back and lurking from time to time. Brings a smile to my face when I see all the ol' timers still kickin' it around.
I did it today - bought some new seats for the ZHP to try out - BMW e85 M sport seats in fabric/leather layout. Heated, Manual adjust seats. I saw them on auction a few days ago and started feverishly doing research into them since I knew these are directly swappable into our cars (sedan/coupe anyways, I think convertible might need adjustments). The manuals are half the weight of powered and I rarely adjust my seats anyways. I've also been chatting with someone who's completed this mod to their ZHP to understand what it's like living with these seats. Excited to mod the car and try them out soon.
I have an alcantara interior that's in very good shape and in no need of replacement, so I felt this config would be the best one to fit right in with the current interior, plus I prefer fabric (no sliding around). I'm pretty sure the pattern won't match the ZHP/alcantara fabric pattern, but I think it will at least color match.
MAYBE I'll get a leather steering wheel to better bring it all together although my current Coby wrapped alcantara one is still holding up well!

Honestly, I didn't either. This is the first example I've seen so I knew it was extra special. One of those "you'll see this only once" type of deals. Still in decent condition, fabric inserts, manual, and heated. I may see others looking around more, but probably not in this config. Figured a Z4 enthusiast may want these and I could break even on them worse-case scenario (if I decide not to use them).

I'll weigh them for sure but it's going to be a while. I'll be able to get to them probably late June - heading out of the country for a while for a hiking trip and told the seller to hold them until I get back - I don't want them sitting somewhere for weeks, but the info I'm going off of is here for the manual seats: https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14199. Supposedly they weigh almost half of the "standard" powered ones which weigh 28.5kg. I doubt it's actually "half" but even from perusing the Z4 forums I could not find the weight for manual e85 M seats. Some say 10 kg difference, others say it's only 3-4 kg. Time will tell.

Hopefully it isn't as disappointing as the E46 coupe seats I picked up:
Alcantara power 62lb
Leather manual 58lb
And the manual doesn't even sit lower (likely due to all the extra framework for the flip forward function on the coupe)
Those seats look amazing, +1 to keeping posted about the results. Also it looks like it may come with the euro first aid kit box. I find it super handy to use as alternative closed storage space since all we really have is the glovebox and that ashtray in the back

The E85 M seats (powered) will sit lower than the ZHP seats from the person that has done this mod. This was actually one of the changes he informed me to expect. I'm unsure if the manual versions will sit lower than their powered counterparts.

For what it's worth, the Manual M3 seat was noticeably lower than the automatic non-M E46 seat if you're looking for head room. My M240 seats actually raised me probably an entire inch and it's such a massive problem.

No one did that with my last carThanks for the heads up (hah!) on the manual M3 seats. I had a set of power M3 seats that I didn't like at all, but if I can find some manual cloth insert bois...

Welp. Someone backed into the ZHP this morning on the way to the office.
Dude in a lifted TJ slipped off the clutch too early while pulling away from an uphill light. One of his back wheels rolled into the right side of the front bumper. We were spaced well but by the time he caught it I was out of room to back up and he was out of room to finish saving it.
Honestly didn't do too much. Turned what was a hairline surface crack into a large crack and wrecked the fog light assembly.
But, I was going to order another front bumper cover in a month or so anyways. Too many miles and track days on this one.
Guy was super torn and felt terrible. Told him not to worry about it and it could have been worse. Plus, we both had to get to work lol.
So, now I have an excuse to go ahead and snag a new one from Umnitza.

I’m actually probably gonna get my new bumper from them too. My dad trashed the shit out of mine haha. He also offered to buy me a new one but I’m in the same boat as you: “I was planning on getting a new one anyway”
Thinking about getting mine prepainted silvergray by umnitza. Is that the way to go, or should I have a shop do the priming and paint work?

Sorry about your bumper as well lol. The nice thing is that these aren't horrifically expensive to replace.
I'm ordering mine pre-painted. I've heard good things about it and if they have the same paint guy they did a few years back, he's pretty spot on. I may tack on some other goodies from them while I'm at it.

Thanks brother :). I was honestly more surprised than anything. But, we were both okay :). After spending years responding to car accidents, it really helps put into perspective what matters.
Plus....It's an excuse to buy car parts!!!! Like I need an excuse lol.
*edit* Aaaaand now I'm on ECS looking at quad piston brake upgrades cause "I'll be working on the front end anyways.".... I need help, lol.
Ha, speaking of bumper damage, a while back I came out to my car in the parking lot to some new scuffs, a blister, and a crack in the paint:
https://imgur.com/izSEjhPl.jpg
Filled the crack with some touch-up paint, unfortunately this is the best it'll get. Why do people just suck - I had the rear bumper completely repainted last year or the year before, so it was pristine up to this point.

Regarding brake upgrades, this time around I went with the Wilwood 4-piston brake upgrade and admit these calipers really bite and provide better performance over the stock brake calipers.
With that said, the Wilwood setup is far from "plug and play" as they use shims (washers) to line them up and it takes numerous trials to get them lined up right. This is the only short fall to using these but replacement calipers are so much more affordable and getting the kit for these are much cheaper than going for the Brembo BBKs.
This season I will start working on my rear brakes so my ZHP will have Wilwood calipers at all 4 corners[emoji4]

Sounds like initial setup is a bit of a bear. But, I'd say it's worth it for that much of a difference over stock.

Curious if you have explored the F80 BBK swap for the M3?
On that topic, I officially dropped off my steering knuckles at my machine shop today. E46 M3's need 2.5-3mm shaved off the back of the caliper to fit, which I have done, but M3 brakes aren't a bolt on to 330's. Normally you'd shave the M3 brackets anoter 6mm, but I am taking this off the knuckle. My machinist looked a little nervous about my confidence and enthusiasm. He says he is going to run a stress simulation to make sure that even after material is shaved away that the system is safe for the extreme forces that brakes go under.
I brought my knuckle in with the M4 rotor on bolted on with a series of washers between the rotor and the hub to simulate the concept of material already being machined down. I sadly didn't measure this beforehand so I don't know roughly how much material needs to be removed. We looked at the rotor placement in the caliper and noticed it's more outbound in the channel where the rotor could go. He guestimated there was 2mm of space outward (before hitting the caliper) and 4mm inward. He suggested swapping those tolerances, so there would be 2mm of space inward so less machining has to be done. Then, to ensure the integrity of the knuckle, he suggested removing 1mm of the caliper and the remainder off the knuckle. I told him to do whatever is safe and that if he doesn't believe its feasable to complete safely, to just abandon ship and give me all my bits back. He seems confident, but I am just a little concerned. I know it's with the right people to get the job done right. Honestly, if this doesn't do it I will probably go to M3 spindles because that would be my cheapest option.

I've looked at bolt on options and the like. The OEM brakes, with good pads and rotors, haven't really let me down.
But, I'm planning on eventually completing the SC build in the future so, I'm window shopping bolt on brake upgrades.

Those seats look amazing, +1 to keeping posted about the results. Also it looks like it may come with the euro first aid kit box. I find it super handy to use as alternative closed storage space since all we really have is the glovebox and that ashtray in the back

Unfortunately just got word the seller won't be shipping them to me. I was initially quoted just over $630 to ship to the USA (which I was happy to pay), but that wasn't enough. Price to ship from overseas to USA is closer to $1500 or more... so if anyone really, really wants them, and is willing to pay for shipping that costs more than the seats themselves, I can connect to anyone to the seller. I have no relationship with the seller, but they do have a 100% ebay seller rating with over 600 transactions.

Bad day for me. Long story short I told the machine shop I was going to collect my parts if they couldn’t finish it by tomorrow EOD. They gave me to the lead machinist and he said he wasn’t comfortable cutting any more material off the knuckle beyond what it rolled out of the factory with. Then he suggested a spacer under the rotor. I asked how that’d be with the wheel and he said he’d get it done. They said $500.
Then I call back because the thickness of the spacer we discussed could be thinner because the rotor was overspaced from the knuckle. Then he said I would lose hubcentricity if I had any spacer over 3mm. Then he said he would remove 2mm from the caliper, 2mm from the knuckle, and add a 2mm spacer to get the caliper to sit in the right position. Quoted $1k. So I said nah, obviously.
I’m not an engineer at all, but I’d be surprised if this genuinely wasn’t feasible. The neck of the caliper to the mounting holes is 13.9mm, or 10.9mm after the modifications I had made. The knuckle side is 16.1mm. Well, the knuckle is hardened steel and the caliper is aluminum. Isn’t aluminum weaker? So he was willing to get the caliper neck to 8.9mm thin aluminum but wouldn’t want the steel knuckle any thinner 14.1mm?
I assume that in actuality, once he looked closer, he found this project too risky and a liability for a small chump of change (they shaved the caliper for $70 to its current position), not to mention overly challenging for the payoff IE: mounting the knuckle in a machinable position. Without actual engineering and probably measure the strength of the knuckle, there’s too much guess work. I can only speculate.
So now I have 2 380mm discs, 2 M4 calipers, 2 pads (street, track), and some 1 pistons on the car for the foreseeable future.
So today I grabbed my untouch steering knuckles and put them back on the car so I could drive my car again.

Thanks for offering help. I was re-drawing my schematic to make it more digestible for you, and then I re-took the measurements right now to ensure they’re accuracy.
I took my initial measurements a year ago on the car so I didn’t even see this, but the 16.1mm of thickness that I measured on the steering knuckle is only that thick for the bolt hole. The arm itself (the arm that extends from the hub to the mounting hole for the caliper) is actually 12.9mm thin. I need about 5mm off and I would agree with my shop it’s too thin.
So in the end I’ve bought all this M4 stuff all thanks to some janky measuring I took when I was probably tired :)
The only way this will work now is if I convert to an M3 front. I don’t know if I have the front fender clearance though and there’s no precise measurement for the track increase.

I purchased an autofold mirror switch (with purple bottom) and autofolding M3 rep side mirrors today. Once the side mirrors arrive, I will take out the autofold motors and transplant them into my OEM M3 mirror assembly converting them into autofolding euro M3 side mirrors. I now have everything in play for a July conversion for my ZHP :cool
