I apologize for creating a whole new thread when we have a thread dedicated to this, but I need to grab everyone's attention. I know Ryan is in the area, and she has offered to help, but she also mentioned being very busy.

So, if anyone is local and willing to take a look at the details, please let me know... I am basically 100% on this car assuming there are no pending/unforeseen issues.

http://asheville.craigslist.org/cto/3453819721.html

So, if anyone can look at the car I would be greatly appreciative.

Please call or text if you're able to help... 561-758-2532

Yes, same car. We've been talking a lot, more so just tonight. I just want some good information from a 3rd, uninterested party before I buy a flight and come get the car. More photos would be nice too. :)

You really want another alpine white badly huh ?

I would go look at it but its 5 hours south of me.

JupiterBMW
01-01-2013, 09:04 PM
Well, yes, I do... And honestly, more than just wanting ONLY alpine white, I really do NOT want Imola red, black, or silver... That knocks out almost ALL the cars. My next color preference is Orient Blue, Mystic Blue, or possibly sparkling graphite. That last one would be a stretch though...

Vas
01-01-2013, 09:07 PM
I understand black and silver but imola ftw. But that's all personal choice.

Best of luck in finding one.

I'm trying to plan a family hike in Franklin so we can check out this car for you. You said the guy wouldn't be back until the 4th (Friday) right?

JupiterBMW
01-02-2013, 06:26 AM
Wow Brenan, that car is beautiful. That is actually my #2 color option, Orient Blue, so sexy... And natural brown with black cube too (the best combo IMHO). It does not have NAV or the cold weather package (I know what you're thinking... WTF do I need cold weather in South Florida for?!?! I use the heated seats sometimes, and I have to have fold down rear seats!) though, so I'm still going to keep the AW car in NC as my #1. Thanks for posting though.

Ryan- Ok, I don't want to inconvenience you too much. If you can't make it, I completely understand. I actually spoke to the owner last night and he said they'll be back in town a day early, but I don't see myself having my insurance payout until the end of the week at the absolute earliest. Probably not until Monday or so realistically. So, don't feel the need to rush TOO bad. I was hoping someone could look at the car this weekend or early next week. I will probably fly up late next week if all is satisfactory. :)

Thank you to EVERYONE... You guys have all been so supportive and helpful with all of this.

Sapphire Black for the slam dunk

There is a low mile sapphire black sedan down here... To be honest, I've found myself looking at the Craigslist ad quite a few times... I would love to say that I think sapphire black is a beautiful color, but the only time I've seen one, it was filthy! :biggrin

Yeah man, I really liked the natural brown in my car. You will have a much harder time converting grey leather to the natural brown as you'll have to swap everything... Going from alcantara or black leather only requires one to swap the door cards and seats...

Jupiter, I just sent you a text. I live in Asheville. I wonder if this is a BMW CCA member, as I'm the area CCA coordinator. Franklin is about about 75 miles away. I have 1 member that lives there. I'd be happy to drive out tomorrow & look it over if you want. I could possible get my local BMW independent tech do a pre purchase inspection. He's on vacation right now but I might be able to talk him into it. Just let me know if you want me to drive over & kick the tires. BTW, I'm very familiar with the E46, as well as the E30, E36, E34, E38 & E39's having owned them all and doing most all my own maintenance

Ugh, sorry for the lack of replies on my end guys. I've been busy detailing my buddies 4Runner... Geezus, that thing is huge...

Anyway, I spoke with Rich today and he is going to look at the car hopefully tomorrow or over the weekend for me. Thank you to all that offered to help. Rich explained that he is retired, so he has plenty of free time. Ryan, I'm glad I didn't have to inconvenience you! I'm sure its tough with the little one.

If all is as expected, I'll be up there hopefully early next week to pick up the car. If any of you will be willing/able to meet up, I'd love to make a small gathering of it and see some of you!

Will keep you all posted.

I'll give you a call when I'm there & tell you what I see. Semper Fi!

So have I.... Many times, lol.

1. This '03 in NC.
2. Another '03 with alcantara interior in MA
3. The supposed one in CO, '05 with alcantara as well, but I'm damn near certain this car doesn't exist. Ask me why... Lol.

And as Porky pig would say, that's all folks!!

Just wanted to check in today after looking over Jon's ZHP find in WNC. A beautiful drive through the mountains in Western North Carolina; This is the 1st time that I have driven a sedan ZHP versus my convertible and I'm amazed on how well the car feels after 10 years & 125k miles. Just goes to show how well BMW made these cars, the E46's. Even with the approx. 100k miles difference, this car was as tight & responsive as my '05 vert with 29k! Not everyday that you get to drive (2) ZHP's! Jon's going to have a nice drive back if this works out for him.

Finally able to post... What a freaking day it has been... But yes, first and foremost, huge thank you's go out to Rich. Not only did he take the time to go take a thorough look at the car, but he also took a TON of photos and sent them to me. He is a very knowledgeable BMW enthusiast and made sure to take a look at all of the little piddly things that I asked him to check out. The car seems to have been owned by an enthusiast and someone that put maintenance before mods, so I am very excited to make the purchase.

Of course, nothing will be easy. I dropped the info for my car into Fedex today, and the car was also picked up by the tow company (CoPart, just FYI, look for it if you want anything from the car). But, I also received a phone call this evening that my counterpart on the ship is injured, and I may need to go back to the ship early. I am hoping to make it up to NC sometime early next week, but hopefully work won't get in the way.

Anyway, I'm excited to see this car and make her my own. :)

Well guys, the continued report is that the email confirming my insurance payout was received today, stating the funds transfer is in process. Hopefully it clears ASAP so I can continue with my plans to go pick up the car on Friday. I spoke to Evan again tonight and we're all set to get together on Friday. I will be flying into ATL and then driving him back up to Franklin, NC.

From there, my plan is to shoot up and through Asheville. Then down through Spartanburg for a visit to the BMW factory/performance center... :) From there I'll shoot down through South Carolina towards I-95 and head South from there...

Should be home late morning on Saturday, new ZHP in hand. :)

Thanks to all for the help, I know I owe a bunch of you favors! Beers at the Family Reunion for sure! :thumbsup

I would love to... I haven't firmed up plans, but the idea is to grab a flight landing in ATL at 10:10am. By the time I drop Evan off back at home and finish up paperwork and such, I figure it'll be 1-2... Then an hour to Asheville from Franklin? I just looked at the map route again and it appears that I'm just grazing to the South of Asheville... But perhaps a stop in for lunch or something would work. I just want to be able to get to the Performance Center before dark (photo ops if nothing else)

I will start a thread when my travels begin. We can keep in touch more as the time draws near. This is all pending completion of financial clearance.

Congrats on the new ride. I spent a week out in Franklin on a motorcycle trip a few years ago and there are some awesome roads out there. I see you are heading up to Asheville and assume you are taking Hwy 23 to I-40. If you can add an extra hour to your trip I highly suggest taking 64 east out of Franklin to Cashiers and then 107 up to Sylva which will put you back onto Hwy 23. Hwy 64 was a lot of fun with a ton of curves and great scenery.

BCS_ZHP
01-09-2013, 07:13 AM
Hwy 64 is a blast, it's the only way to get to my in-laws place at Lake Toxaway. However, switchbacks in a rocking Denali tend to make the dog sick, its even more fun when she gets some of that on one of the kids, screaming, crying, nowhere to pull off, wife mad at you -- priceless family vacation memories, lol.

I'm in for a mini meet. I'll have to work a couple things out, but it shouldn't be a problem.

Just checked the weather, rain on Friday, but it will be cleared up on Saturday.

From Asheville to the Zentrum is ~1.5hrs, sun sets by 5, even sooner if it's cloudy and rainy. Thoughts about spending the night in NC Friday? Then give the car a quick rinse Sat morning and head down to the Performance Center/Zentrum for a few photos?

You and Cam could share a hotel room or maybe David or Evan have an extra room. I wish I had one to offer, but I'm full up.

It's really up to Jon. What does your schedule look like? I would be interested in staying the night so that we could possibly do something Friday night or see some more of Asheville. I haven't been up there in years. It's a real shame that Friday is supposed to be cloudy/rainy. It's our forecast in Atlanta too. Sat is going to be super nice though.

Lets see.....Friday night i may have a couple rooms available at my abode. One would be a single bed in a childs room (sans child) and one would be a double bed futon, both their own rooms. Ill have to check with lady friend to make sure we dont have plans that night, but i dont think we do. Yall let me know if its even probable, and we can move forward. I agree. If you eat at Tupelo Honey, you must try a) the biscuits and blueberry jelly b) the Moonshine Mary (bloody mary made with moonshine infused with bacon and jalapeno peppers in place of vodka) c) the nutty fried chicken and d) the catfish with sunspot salsa.

The Moonshine Mary is without a doubt, the best I have had in the US, period. The flavors go together magnificantly.

edit: Their flavored teas are made with fresh fruit puree and are absolutely out of this world.

Ha. I be they are using troy and sons moonshine (local) but infusing the jalepenos onsite. Prob dont sell bottles. Might be able to pick some up at the distillery if they are infusing there. However, again, i bet the infuse onsite. The local beer pubs infuse onsite for jalepeno IPA's, Bacon stouts, etc.

Wow, lots of activity! Sorry I haven't posted sooner, had to make a 'quick' trip over to Tampa this morning for some work related paperwork... 3 hours of driving each way for 30 minutes of paperwork... So lame! And speaking of work, I also got a phone call that I have to go back to the ship early, the guy I rotate with hurt his shoulder and had to get off the ship. So, Monday I have a 3pm flight to Alaska...

Sooo, that being said, I've only got a few days left at home with my girls. That was why I wasn't going to make a long weekend/trip out of going to get this car. Of course, meeting with some Mafia members would be awesome. So, here's what I'm thinking...

10:15am- I arrive ATL
Google maps says 2.5 hours to Franklin, NC to get the car. Realistically, that means 1pm, probably will be 2pm by the time I am driving away in my new ZHP. :biggrin

That puts us in Asheville by 4pm at the latest (1 hour 15 minutes according to Google Maps). As mentioned by Ryan, it will be getting dark shortly thereafter, so making it to the BMW Performance Center/Zentrum won't be worth it on Friday (another 1 hour 15 minutes according to Google Maps)... But, I just called and the Zentrum is only open M-F...

So, that begs the question, is it even worth our/my time to go to there on Saturday? I don't know that I'll do a full tour, but perhaps a stop in to the Gift Shop would be fun.. I couldn't really tell if the Zentrum/Perf. Center were one place, or not, and if the hours were the same... I saw the tours and museum and stuff, but that all seemed at the Zentrum, again, M-F only... If the whole place is going to be shut down, then I'd skip it entirely. That'd save me an hour or so on my drive home.

So, I would be down to spend the night in Asheville and hang with everyone... If there's no point to going to BMW on Saturday, then I would just get up and bounce early Saturday morning (7-8am) so that I could still get home at a reasonable hour (Google maps says 10 hours from Asheville to Jupiter)... I don't really want to drive at night if I can avoid it as my eyes aren't all that awesome...

So, that all being said... What's everyone think? David, no worries on cleaning your place... If we do crash in Asheville that night, I'll for sure take you up on the offer as I'm trying to pinch nickels through this whole event... But seriously, I don't need anything fancy, the extended offer is more than enough man. Appreciated for sure...

And Cam... What do you think of picking me up at ATL and us driving up to Franklin together? It would save Evan from driving down to get me. I'd rather not ride in the car with him before I bought it for that long of a time... I don't know, just seems like it might be awkward... :rofl

Ok, discuss... :biggrin

I looked up zentrum. It's about an hour tour and they close at 5:30. So we would have to already be there by 4:30. (doesn't work with the time frame) We could still go by and take pictures Saturday, but it wouldn't be open. The gift shop is only open during museum hours. That would also stick you with a lot of driving in the dark on the way home after.

I save a little bit of time by not going back through Greenville. (like 20 minutes) That would also give me time to walk around or check out any other parts of Asheville on Saturday morning that we don't see on Friday too. I remember there being lots of little stores and stuff. (still have a few late Christmas presents to buy)

I can totally pick you up. Sounds like fun. I think you need some quality imola/alcantara time. ;)

Cams room. Cars sheets included. They will also be clean. And all that shit on the floor that my 3yr old didnt clean up will be put away. There will be playdough and a chalkboard in there for you too, cam, if you get board or feel creative.

Im game fellas. We can hang, catch up with ryan, hit the town and drink and eat. Or, if we are money conscious, i can cook at my house and we can all eat here, imbibe, and tell stories. My favorite thing to do in life is to cook and entertain, so its ip to yall. Im sure my lady will be here. She likes good food and drink, and fast cars.......and secretly misses the zhp.

And yes. Jon needs some alcantara/imola love to enter his heart.

Guys and gals , we can go to pm's with this if you like, but i would like to know if we plan to eat at my house on friday. Like i said before, im more than happy to cook for everyone, and enjoy doing it.....however, if you want something epic, it would be best if i knew tonight or early am what we are going to do. It would be best for me to rub/spice/marinade whatever it may be tomorrow night so it rests for 24 hrs. (Tofu is a bitch to cook)

Ryans323i
01-09-2013, 05:28 PM
David, if you want to host, i think that's a great idea. (Although I'm not sure of i can do tofu, especially with you just bragging about bbq and squash soup.) I'll bring the alcohols, you guys just let me know what you want.

The performance center and the zentrum are 2 different places, but they're just across the street from each other. The museum tours are usually booked up to three months in advanced, as I've tried to go as a quick adventure and found out there's never same week openings.

But, I believe, you can always drive in front for pics, whether it's closed or not, but don't quote me on that. The gift shop doesn't have anything you can't buy from bmw lifestyles or a local bmw dealership.

Ok folks. Sorry I haven't been more active. Been busy this evening. And I've been trying to work with my wife. She really wants me to drive home Friday night so I'm back in town Saturday morning-ish as opposed to Saturday adternoon/evening (if I spend a whole night in Asheville).

I explained that I really don't want to drive at night, especially in the hills of NC/SC.

That all being said, I'm still planning to stay in Asheville Friday night. David, I seriously appreciate the crash pad, so don't worry about cooking. One huge favor is plenty! Lets plan to get some food out somewhere (tupelo honey seems to be the spot) so you don't have to prep food.

Then we can grab drinks or whatever and just chill and hang that evening? Cam mentioned seeing some of Asheville so that works... I have no idea what kind of town it is so I'm game for whatever. I'll be honest, I'm prolly gonna bounce real early, 7am or so when the sun comes up. That cool?

You can definitely drive up to the Zentrum and take pics even if its closed, unless things have changed:

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j234/paulkeith/cars/TIAG_ZHP/DSC_0446Large.jpg

I think your schedule is a little sporty to land at ATL 10:15 and be in Franklin at 1PM. I'd count on not getting out of the perimeter (285) until 1130/1200 or so if you're landing at 1015. Friday lunchtime traffic can already be pretty congested and just getting out of the airport and onto the road will take a while.

I feel asleep on the couch after work. Didn't wake up until 7:30 this morning. Phew. So I have some bad news. Leaving work yesterday my "service engine soon" light came on. Was feeling awful so I didn't check the codes until this morning. Lots of misfire and mixture prep bank codes. Going to call my independent mech when they open in a little while. I didn't notice any issues with the car's operation, but we'll see. Checked all of my fluids already and they are fine. Worst case: we may be taking the corvette. I will keep you updated.

Torxuvin
01-10-2013, 05:30 AM
So my mechanic is suggesting that he thinks the missfires are from a vacuum leak. Prob one of the intake hoses. I think the light came on bc I had a code for the secondary air pump too. (emissions thing that comes on when the car is cold) That explains why it came on when I started the car leaving work.

Edit: Call 2 after I went out to find a leak myself. Not noticing anything at idle. He said it was very much most likely a vac leak. Especially with a secondary air code. But as long as it's not driving strangely or stumbling that it is okay to drive. It's just going to give me "shitty gas mileage." Lol That explains why the gas mileage has been low since I bought the car. (25-27 highway) They can't get me in until next Thursday.

Jon. It's up to you with what you are comfortable with. Everything on the vette works but the a/c right now. In the midst of getting the new compressor in. It's supposed to be in the 50s though. I'm not super worried about the vac leak, since I'm not getting any symptoms driving. Going to call some other buddies around though to see if I can get it taken care of today.

Up to me? Don't be silly man... They're your cars... Whatever works for you. Keep in mind, been in the low 80s here, so with 50s up that way, I'm sure a lack of A/C won't bother me! I'm fine with whatever you want to do. Let me know. I still haven't told Evan that he doesn't have to come get me, so if you have to bail altogether, that's ok too... As for vacuum leaks, I've driven cars with worse. If its driving fine, then I'm sure you'll be ok. The car will stumble and die long before you break anything catastrophic... If you're running ok and the worst of it is bad gas mileage, then you're good...

I will most likely stick with beer and/or wine. I do not do liquor... And as for beer, I'm a cheap date... Coors Light is typically my choice. But again, not to worry ... I will stop and get some myself, and of course, I'll be donating to the cause. :thumbsup You guys are fantastic hosts/esses!

:wub You guys are awesome. Even if it ends up not being the intake boots, they probably wouldn't be a bad idea to change. (98k miles now) Not really sure where else the vac leak would be. Maybe the DISA? But that was replaced about 20k miles ago.

More or less... It's an '03 so no auto lights or wipers, or DRLs, but it has factory alarm. And it's very clean... Happy to say the least. My new found mafia friends approve...

It's in the bylaws. If a member totals a ZHP they have 12 business days to replace it.

Yes. Natural brown leather has been cleaned and treated, and is wrapped in plastic until install. :biggrin

Schweeet!

So you removed the interior on the old AW zhp, then gave it to Copart?

What other goodies are going onto this new ZHP from the ZHP?

Maybe he's trading the black leather with someone for alcantara, and then he's putting his NB in his ZHP and the alcantara goes to copart ?

JupiterBMW

Refer to the parts section for the thread regarding the guy that wanted to trade his alcantara for leather. I am doing so and will then sell the alcantara.

NB leather is still going in my car.

Wow, that's an admirable move sir - helping out two ZHP owners with their interiors to no benefit for yourself. I wish you luck on your new car!

No, I found someone parting an '04 325i local to me. It had black leather (non sport seats but whatever) so I picked that up and put it in my '04 ZHP before it went off to the scrap yard... I then kept the natural brown. The new ZHP had black leather. I swapped with a Florida guy (the one that posted on E46f) because he wanted leather and I figured that the alcantara will be easier to sell down the road. Besides, its in really good shape. Not perfect, but pretty good.

I will take the alcantara.

It will go for sale (front and rear seats and 4 door panels to match) but not until I come home. Besides, I'm not sure how shipping would work out on this. The buyer is always more than welcome to come pick up.

Well, you put out positive energy and do favors for others, and hope that some of it comes back to me. Like many said, at all costs save the natural brown, and also try and save that guy's alcantara. Clearly, he's going to drive his ZHP into the ground, so I'm glad I did that He can beat up the black leather if he likes... Hopefully someone else can enjoy it that knows how nice it is.

A bit late, but congrats Jon! Looks beautiful. I still can't get over Alpine white, I wish I'd been able to find one to replace my old one. Also, that Porsche panamera you saw, those are commonplace in Atlanta. Some high schooler down the street from me drives a Panamera S. Its ludicrous. You should come up for caffeine and octane sometime! It's the first Sunday of every month and there are always at least 600 cars. Lots of bimmers too, but only two ZHPs I've seen, mine and Cameron's. We need company!

Justin,
Probably about a 1000 miles to Jon, a big SUV (for weather protected transport) is going to return less than 20 mpg, at best. So 50 gallons each way, that's 100 gallons @ $3.50/gallon. Check about shipping big items like this via Greyhound, likely can be done for less than the $350 cost of driving.

You have a couple months. I'm leaving to I back on my ship tomorrow, will be gone for 2 months.

And Devlin passed up the interior, so you're first in line Justin. I will clean them up a bit and take pics if I have time before I go.

And yes road trip. I can put you guys up for a night or two, lots of fun down here.

Side note, I got the natural brown in the car today and it looks great. For now I left the silver cube, will see how I like it before selling. My wife agrees though, black cube looks much better with the natural brown.
