View Full Version : Hey Dane! Do these codes look familiar?
Recently cleaned my DISA, ICV and replaced lower boot. Completed Vanos seals, spark plugs, and gaskets.
About 100 miles later SES light comes on. Checked it and these codes popped up:
P2240, p0171, p0174
I know the p2240 is an o2 sensor related, but not sure if that caused the other two codes to pop up too? Going to recheck the intake boot and make sure its on tight.

Boot is definitely a good place to start.
I'd also make sure you've got the disa all buttoned up. You could go the old carb cleaner route and spray around the disa and see if she sucks it in and stumbles.
Check your ccv hoses as well- at least the ones you can see. Sometimes you can crack that one that goes to the front right of the valve cover when you're getting the vc on/off.

linh,
the other two codes are lean bank one and lean bank two. Normally associated with a hole in the intake boot. They are the same codes i was throwing prior to intake boot install. If you just replaced the boots, i would check the connections. especially (and i hate to say it) the lower connection from the lower boot to the throttle body. i know this one is a pita, and it is the hardest one to see that you got on correctly. Most likely, though, you just have a loose connection.

Yup...it looks like you introduced an intake leak.
Make sure you also check the disa gasket....
Additionally....if you didn't get the VCG on there correctly or tighten it enough....you could be sucking air there also.
Boots are a good check also, as mentioned. Just don't negate the other two items.
Ok Guys,
Inspected the lower boot. It's on there alright, perfectly even around the intake groove/throttle body. The lower and upper intake connection is on tighter than before, and I made sure it was on correctly as well.
I gave the DISA some high temp RTV sealant to give it a better seal. . . . Now, will the codes clear itself? Or should I disconnect the battery or something?

Disconnecting the battery will not typically clear codes. Go pick up a code reader (Actron) and clear the code, or take it to autozone and have it cleared.
Codes are cleared. Will drive another gas tank full and see if it will come back. Hopefully it won't
Btw, a question. . . During the Beisan seals break in, will the car still have a that power surge/hesitation? Mine seems to have that, but not very much, and only 3rd gear around 2.8-3k

How did the codes clear? Even though the light clears...the code can still be stored.
Don't know the answer to your vanos seal question. I would just be patient through the break in period and see what happens.

Thinking he means the CEL light is off. Codes are still in there.
+1 on the break in period. I would imagine that until the new seals are broken in, you could still have the surges.
I also saw a fairly good mileage improvement after the break in period- to the tune of about 2 mpg.
I cleared the codes using the Actron pocket scanner.

Lol- or that.
Nice work.

Ok....great. let's see what happens. Cars running good right? When you made sure the boots were on right, did it seem like maybe you fixed something?

Not really. The lower boot was on pretty snug. I was maybe a little suspicious of the lower/upper boot connection, so I made sure they were on real good.
I re-installed the DISA using RTV high temp-sealant. Other than that, thats all I did.
I hope the light doesn't come back. . . Time will tell though.

So...its running good? No stumble? Idle strong?
It runs great. Idles great. what do you mean by stumble though?
I do feel a very faint lag/hesitation in 3rd gear when accelarating 3/4 throttle in 3rd gear at almost 3k rpms.
Had that before I replaced the Vanos seals, but worse.

Ok...sounds good. Let's wait and see.

Over 100 miles driven so far and no SES light. =)
Also did my second set of Vanos seals, vcg, spark plugs, DISA, ICV, lower boot etc. on my friend's black ZHP yesterday. Took around 4.5 hours this time around.
Inspected his motor and is good of any leaks around the oil housing gasket. His DISA is a very good shape (thinking it was probably replaced before). The DISA in mine is still intact, but has lost that "spring resistance" when adjusting it.

Nice work. Looks like the RTV sealant did the trick.
Alright, the BMW is throwing up some codes again. . . This time: P2240, P2227, P2237
P2227 is MAF related, probably something I should have clean while I was in there. Going to get some MAF cleaner.
Did some research on the P2240 and P2237, and some people are saying the a DME software updated is needed or these codes will pop up over time. Car still drives OK and idle ranges from 600-750.
kayger12

That P2227 can also be the DME.
I've seen a lot of posts concerning ZHP DMEs needing to be reprogrammed. A lot of those threads the MAF gets cleaned/replaced first and doesn't solve the problem.
Iirc, DME can only be done at the stealer- they have to pull the DME and ship it to Jersey for reprogramming.
Also of interest as I re-read some of those threads is those posters report a slight stumble under load between 2500-3000 rpms. Could possibly be that faint lag/hesitation you refer to...
Going to the stealership and getting them to send my dme sounds like such a hassle not to mention $$. Is there any specific TSB besides the 4k on the DME that I could use for reference?
I was really thinking a software update would solve the problem, but that p2227 is worrying me that it could be an internal DME fault.

This is a copy of the 4K DME TSB info. (http://www.linquist.net/motorsports/bmw/sib121705.txt) Still looking for one specific to your issue.
Also some info here: http://forum.e46fanatics.com/showthread.php?t=697502
Ok... this morning before work, I fired up the car to check the codes again. This time only one code showed up, p2240. Checked it again after a 25 mile drive and still, only p2240 shows up.

Yep-- also read about those codes coming and going. They may go away for a while, but I'm pretty confident they'll be back. Points even more to the DME imo.

Isn't that O2 sensor? Or am I thinking of P2237.

You're correct. Both are O2 sensor related. But with the DME issue, it seems common for 2237 and 2240 to get thrown even though nothing is wrong with the sensors.
I'm really hoping that a software update will fix these issues.
Really don't want to bother shipping out the DME...

Sounds like as long as they can update without crashing it, it's a possibility.
Sending some good vibes your way.
Thanks Kayger12, planning to go next week to finally take care of it.
Hopefully it will work. If not, I might just put the car on the market.

Wouldn't that mean that your DISA is broken/not working? That can't be good.

The software update that requires you to send it to Jersey is for the 4000 rpm power dip, the 2500-3000 stumble is a different issue that a dealer or good indy can do an update for. At least it worked in my case anyway but mine was very noticeable, not "very faint/light" like Linh is describing. You just need to have the latest software update done. Not sure of the specific number and it really shouldn't matter but this post mentions some numbers if it helps.....

We went over most of this in the other thread....

Sorry I can't be of any help on those specific codes you're getting but if it were me I'd start with the dme update and go from there.

Hmmm......I had the wrong link (first one) in my post but corrected it to show an e46f post but at least for me it's still linking to a zhpmafia thread???
This is the correct link....(post #13) showing the dme update numbers.

Barry, yeah, I see that, too. Let me inspect and see what that is.
Barry, you accidentally nested two links in the URL. I have changed it now.
You had both of these links in the coding:

Thanks for fixing my screwup Marcus, yup I think I know what I did. I learned something about copy & pasting a link here. I assumed pasting a link over an existing one would just erase the first one but I guess not.

Of course, it's all good. I've got your back.
UPDATE:
Software uploaded. Driven 30 miles and noticed it is much smoother with no lag /jerk through the gears. It could be my head, but torque is very nice around 3k rpms.

I called for pricing on this and was told it was about $115.00...for data.
My indy shop wanted around $216. Negotiated him down to $130 otd. So, $115 isn't bad at all.

Last week I scanned my car and had error code P2240 and P0461 (fuel level sensor) but never had a SES light. I erased the pending code and did a few repairs on my car (oil pan gasket and fuel pump / fuel level sending unit). Drove the car home last night and back to work this morning. On the way to work, I got a SES light one. I scan the car and now its error code P2240 and P2237.
Got an appointment with the dealership tomorrow to have them update the software and take care of the airbag recall. Hopefully this will fix my stumble/bog in the low range of the gears.

Solid thread revival right there Richie, luckily most of us are still on this board (shows you how good it is).
Can't help you because I never go these codes but I hope your dealership can.

No worries, I'm pretty involved in the BMW community (we make manufacture a few tools for BMW of North America) so I'll get it figured out one way or another.
I revived this thread instead of creating another one for future members to read and get some answers. Hopefully this will help someone!
