I figure it's about time to start this thread. This is my 3rd E46, this one I intend to keep. I purchased it from a non-enthusiast owner. I actually drove past it daily on my way to work for 4 months, admiring it as it sat in a bank parking lot. Eventually I stopped and saw it was a 6MT, so I left a note with my phone number. Turns out the owner was the President of the bank and was planning on selling it.

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b256/wertyu78/ZHP%20BUILD%20THREAD/IMG_0879_zps5614d787.jpg
This happened after getting caught up in traffic going up the mountain. The driver didn't realize how long we had been going slow and forgotten that his tires weren't warm. Came into the first corner too hot and locked up the brakes. A truck that was driving by towed him out and after pulling off the fender, we went hard at it all of the way home.

I just finished up the the CCV overhaul. It wasn't as bad as many say it is. I simply studied the setup on realoem, watched a quick how to video, and got started. If you take your time, think about it, and stay organized it isn't a hard process at all. I finished in 4 hours without any prior experience. I also cleaned my throttle body and ICV.
I took the car for a spirited drive and I must say.... the butt dyno feels great. No more bouncing idle on cold starts or delayed throttle response. Bottom end torque and high rpm power feel better and stronger.
I did run into two issues. #1 being I broke the fuel pressure regulator hose that connects to the upper intake boot, and #2 being I now have a somewhat loud "sucking" sound coming from the intake manifold. Both intake boots seemed fine, but I'm going to try and get my hands on some Stett performance silicone intake boots.

Started on VANOS today. I forgot that the VANOS piston bolts are reverse thread and ended up breaking both. One I manages to pull out with a pick, but the other fell into the camshaft end piece(not sure what it's called). I had to take off the small chain and gears to get it out, but now I have to get it back together properly and in proper timing.
Oh yeah, I don't have those special tools or any idea how! My buddy said he might be able to get the tools from his friend and said he's confident that he can time it. Hopefully all goes well. I'll keep the family posted.

I purchased the Cam Tools from GAS. I've heard nothing but good things about the tools and I am using their aluminum DISA valve with no issues whatsoever. I'm getting a mechanic friend to come help me with the timing adjustment process, but I have to wait for the tools to come in. No progress will be made on the timing until next saturday(hopefully).
I'm going to try and wrap up the VANOS bearing and seals install today.

Yes. This whole vanos procedure quickly turned into a nightmare. Read into this...

Unfortunately I do not have any pictures after this. IDK where they went. But the car has been running excellent. It's better than it's ever been. Between a practically brand new head, rebuilt VANOS, and new plugs... it pulls very good. I've put 2,800 miles on it since all of this without any issues whatsoever. I've averaged 29.7 mpg as well.

Mounted some new PS2's in the rear. This tire shop is pretty cool. It's on the west side of Greenville and is Cuban themed. They always have a very nice selection of used tires and use Snap on tools/equipment. I like to buy tires from places like this to help support the small businesses. Besides, you can't beat PS2's with 6/32's mounted/balanced for $90.

I can't believe you went home and worked on your car. That's dedication! I was wiped out around 2pm yesterday.
After hearing your times yesterday, I'd say the work you've done made a big difference. Based on the times from Mike Renner, the course was 1-2 sec quicker. I think your dropped 4 secs right?

Most of the work I've done is just maintenance or preventative maintenance. The only real modifications I have done to the car are the brakes and front sway. I'd say the biggest influence on the faster times has got be more time behind the wheel. I'm constantly learning it on a daily basis. I believe I was running 1:35-1:36 in the last event.

Will do! It was a PITA. I didn't remove the bumper. I scratched the paint but don't really mind. The front clip is going to be re-sprayed anyway...

This is a long overdue update. Back at the End of April, my good friend and I were diagnosing a misfire issue on cold starts. Unfortunately, the Indy I let prep the block for the head used a steel wire wheel on the deck surface causing it to be out of spec in many places (Steel>Aluminum). After 3,000 miles or so, the head gasket was no longer able to keep the seal and started to seep. Coolant would seep into cylinders 2 & 5 after sitting for a period of time.
Keep in mind I am making this post nearly three months late.... The photos aren't in perfect order, many are missing, and I lost many of them. This is just an overview as to what we did.
The engine was pulled and stripped. Head was shaved and pressure tested. Block deck was shaved, honed, and cleaned. Rods were re-sized for ARP bolts and I used ARP head studs. Everything was lubricated with AMSOIL Assembly lube and engine was broken in with AMSOIL Engine Break In oil.

Wow....I wantz to do this. I have some oil Leakage, and after my water pump issue, I think it would be best to rebuild the engine. Can't be much different from overhauling an Aircraft engine can it??? lol
It wasn't very hard at all. I was fortunate to have a close friend who has built engines all of his life help me. I couldn't have done it without him! Thanks Michael!

Love the wheels. You can unscrew this little rubber bumper underneath the hood near the driver turn signal to raise the hood a little when closed and clean up where the hood meets the turn signal. I only offer this advice because I had the same problem and Dario helped show me how to raise it up just a touch.

Happy I found this thread. Awesome build man, especially with the engine. Those 265's are real meaty!
2 questions if you don't mind:
Do you happen to know the spring rates on the turner coils?
Also, the 11:5:1 compression how? What kind of tune are you using? How did the power change compared to stock compression?

I believe the spring rates are 450 front and 550 rear. With the increased compression I only really noticed a difference in the exhaust note and some mid range to top end power/bite. I am running the stock DME tune currently with no issues.

Good luck! That would be awesome. You should know that the sniffer test it still here, though. Also, tech will visually make sure you have cats. Also, you can be failed for lack of the SAP. It would be a stroke of major luck if you passed, though.

I am under the impression that the sniffer test will be phased out starting in April. However, I need to figure out how long I can keep my car Georgia tagged. That will buy me some time. I plan on passing the visual portion of the test with a little bit of "persuasion", if you catch my drift. I've been pointed in the right direction as to where I should take it for test as well. I can pass the OBD2 portion easily, however.

Now I see why you're worried about passing smog.
Ok, so you're "supposed to" change tags and drivers license within something like 30 days of moving... but you can stretch it as long as you don't get a ticket. If you do get pulled over just say you're on a cross country trip visiting friends ;)
If you get in an accident insurance will have more questions and it doesn't look so good. Basically just be careful on the roads out here

Nope, if a car is here it needs to be registered here unless the car itself spends 51% of the year in the other state.
If it was that easy my car would've been registered in Michigan since the day I bought it 5 years ago.
Like I said in the other thread, I have looked into all the smog loopholes because I own old cars :(

My cousin has helped lots of people in CA register their cars in Idaho. According to him, it was all dandy. :dunno He never had any issues, and the cars spent their time in CA.
Maybe it's not enforced?

Like I said, as long as you don't get caught. Personally I'll deal with the legal California loopholes of which there are many, but I will not publicly acknowledge them as they will get shut down when a ton of people all of a sudden register their cars that way.
For example (my favorite but our cars are still to new for this one):
http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c288/jhermes/2002/P1050320.jpg
Cars with historic vehicle plates like my 2002 only require smog upon transfer of title but your car must meet certain criteria, the main one being it must be at least 25 years old. You also get super cheap registration each year.

Plenty of people run out of state plates who live here. But, the law does say you are supposed to register them, per the previous post. From what I've seen, most never even get questioned. There are so many out of state plates here due to tourism, military, etc, people just don't care. The issue could be if you got pulled over and you had a local drivers license address and an out of state registration, or some kind of mismatch there. But again, that could be explained. Finally, if you live in a local small community where the police have nothing better to do, someone might peg you. Realistically though, it's a long shot so you could just keep the out of state plates and roll the dice, it's not that risky.

I changed over my insurance (USAA) from VA to OH, but did not register it in OH right away. The DMV in VA no longer saw my car as "insured" because it was insured in OH but was registered in VA. Started threatenming me with all kinds of penalties and what not.
A car is required to be registered in OH when residency has been established by job and/or place to live.

Hmm.... I am unsure of what I am going to do. I'll likely play it by ear.
I need to somehow pass Cali smog testing, but then I'll pay a premium for insurance in my name. That's why I have the car titled in my fathers name, he lives in GA. No big deal, because he lives 2 hours from where I live in SC. It's easy to drive down there and visit and do the yearly emissions testing in GA.
The problem with leaving it in his name lies with having to drive across the country once a year for emissions testing.

I remember reading that the Powerflex sub-frame bushings didn't contact the subfloor causing premature failure. That was a few years ago so hopefully they've changed their design. I just know that AKG's rear sub-frame bushes are sandwiched together with a sleeve design for the bolt, so I don't know how that would fail and warrant a replacement. The engine mounts would be different because they're not a through bolt construction.
Hope it's a speedy recovery, Wyatt.

We are not immune to infamous subframe issue that most e46's face. I knew this day would come. It wasn't a matter of if it would happen, but more a matter of when.
I normally have the help of Eurocentric with these big projects. Unfortunately they are backed up for weeks (which is great, I am thrilled that they are) and this is my only car. They will be building my High Comp S54 in a few years.
For this job I've reach out to the very talented Matt Gross and Justin Davenport. They are long time gear-heads and have each built some pretty gnarly cars. They are in the process of opening their own performance shop and agreed to fix my car out of their personal garage in their spare time. Keep an eye out for them. Matt's next personal project starts soon. I won't say much, but it involves a gutted E46 M3, a V8, and lots of boost.
They started after work this evening around 6:45pm.

It's not a DISA dip. I rebuilt mine with the GAS kit and the dip is back.
It has to be software related because the dip was gone after I rebuilt it but came back shortly afterwards after it "reset" or something. :(

So what's your software like then? If its the latest P/N from BMW then you should have a very minimal dip. From what I've read and found to be a common agreement is that the sound of the flap opening is interpreted as a misfire.

Wait...You've never updated your DME???
That's the first thing I thought you would have done. BMW released several updates for our DME after problems arose. You needed to send them off to BMW NA for them to rewrite the DME. But with the advent of our coding abilities, all you need to do is input the new part number from bmwfans.info into INPA and you will be able to rewrite your DME. That's how I coded the 328i to run the EU2 software.

Have you done any autocross with that oil? I always get lifter ticket after an autox session. "All BMWs do that", I'm told, and for the most part they're right. I just want to see if something simple such as an oil change could resolve most of, if not all, of the issue.

Okay cool. I wasn't sure where I wanted to mount it, but I knew I had to retain the factory e-brake. I'll fab up a hydro handle mount to put the handle up here. 13638

I had a tool from an E28 or E30 toolbox lying around and decided I'd bring the shifter closer to the wheel. It does look odd, but it's very functional. I went for a drive and the difference is great.
