View Full Version : LED vs RCR Tails

Well, as you know, I'm rebuilding my car. I'm not a huge fan of doing modifications twice. I currently have DEPO RCR's, and the smaller pieces are obviously darker than the larger ones. I don't like that. Could I get some input on the reliability of DEPO led tails(both RCR and M3 style) vs the cost of OEM RCR's? I can't find them often, and they are a pretty penny.
Also, what is a "good" price for OEM RCR's?
Once I decide, I just want to sell my other sets of tails.

I had eagle eyes, and never had an issue. I may have been lucky though. I'm going with euro cleats from TMS, someday.

I have the Euro clear package (RCR) from Turner Motorsports and I love them. Perfect fitment, no issues with moisture, very good looking. I'd recommend that, I'm not a fan of LED tails...

Woah, $400. Going to delay that for a tad bit, then. I think I'm just going to sell my DEPO set of clears and go back to amber, just need to find a set of OEM amber corners to finish it off.

Why did you get rid of them? Don't like the look? I'm kinda leaning towards RCR as well, but they are not cheap.

I believe Dane had them on his old TiAg, which is totaled.
IMO, I love both styles, but LED's just look so damn sexy on my black sedan. Not to mention they are CRAZY bright.
I have the eagle eye brand as well, no problems thus far.

Are they the M3 style or are they RCR style with LED? I'm just mad that the trunk lights are darker than the body lights. =( Do you have that issue with Eagle Eyes?

I share this opinion, though not always RCR. Amber works with certain colors as well. I'd have amber on Mystic Blue, Oxford Green, or any shade of Black. The darker stuff, pretty much...

Yeah, I thought about editing that post to include amber.. but I figured that it was kind of the same for how I'm explaining it. The 3 sections flow with the sedan lines better..

They are both so sexy...but I guess I have a thing for RCR. I already have ambers that I removed, but I think RCR would look better on Silver Grey. Thank you all for your input. When I have the money again, I'll just decide whether I will go with LED RCRs or OEM.
EDIT: I'm glad there are no serious concerns over quality as opposed to OEM. I was mostly worried that by purchasing after market I'd just end up with a headache.

I actually already have DEPO RCR's. Looking to replace them because the shades of red don't match. I paid $120 at umnitza for them. And I also paid $35 for my clear corners, also DEPO. That is why I was asking about the shades on the LED tails, I wanted to make sure they matched. Also, LED tails (RCR) are $180 on eBay. SOON! How do you feel about the quality of sides and corners from DEPO?

The only thing I don't like about my Depo corners are that Depo stamp on the bottom corner....other than that, it fits and functions perfectly. Had them on my ZHP for a year now with no issues.
As for the color of my Eagle Eyes? I've been very happy with them and sold my spare set to Chad for his ZHP. Chad seems very pleased with his set as well :thumbsup

Awesome. If I don't have any issues with my DEPO corners or side markers, looks like the only thing I'll be changing are my tails. If I sell my DEPO RCR's halogen and OEM ambers I might actually pocket $50.

The only pic of them I currently have on my phone please excuse the car sitting on its rotor (long story).
I can take more tomorrow if you like. I went with the clears to match my front end setup.
Smoked would probably be a better route with your color but that's completely up to you.

It's ok, I think I'll be going with RCR's. I'd love to get them smoked, but I hate how heavily smoked the corners are. :( They are so much darker than tails, usually, that I find myself wanting to go with clear.

You could just do what I did. Buy the RCR's you want and get LaminX film and tint the sections and to the darkness that your heart desires. :)
I couldn't get lights with smoked turns only anywhere so this was the only solution in that case. The smoke was too heavy on my previous set of smoked lights, so I got rid of them fast. LaminX film solved my problems!

The LED RCR's I have I got from Khoalty. I'm not sure if they're the same ones you saw on eBay, but Khoalty's price on it was quite excellent. It's $193 for the set. Make sure you make the correct selections from the dropdowns to get the right one (Select 02-05 Sedan for both dropdown boxes). You seem to be set on this being what you want based on your comments, so here's the link:
http://www.khoalty.com/bmw-e46-led-tail-lights-depo.html
A word of warning on the quality of the front corner and sidemarker lights. The tabs on one of my front turn signal lights broke, and I was NOT forcing them, nor was I putting it in wrong. They just simply broke. This was after a couple of dozen removals throughout the time I've had them, of course, but still.
The fender marker lights have the metal clip on them; they are rusting like you wouldn't believe. I can imagine that they will be breaking off at some point as well.
For these two items, I'd buy OEM if I were you.

Thanks for the link. I'd still probably buy them from eBay, surprisingly good customer service from some of the sellers. As far as quality for the DEPO, I'll just see how it works out. I want OEM, no doubt; and I will get them when I can. I am in Sacramento, which is not that wet of a place, never salt anywhere, so rust is not an issue really, but I'll keep an eye on them. ^^ There are a few on eBay that are exactly the same ones. Just have to have the right "eye" to weed out the ones you want from the mess of options available on eBay. Also be careful; some of the eBay sellers don't bother putting the info on whether it'll fit your car. There are some RCR style lights that are made to fit pre-facelift E46's only (1999-2001), and then there are other ones that actually fit the cars they're designed for (2002-2005). Make sure the listing you purchase from says this information. I've seen pre-face E46's drive around with RCR tails and it almost always throws me off until I take a closer look and realize they make it for them as well!

All E46 coupes had the same tails as M3's of the same model year did. So, if you have a 2002 coupe, you have the same halogen tails as a 2002 M3. You have a 2005, so you have the same LED tails as a 2005 M3 does. 2004 is when BMW introduced LED tails to the E46 coupe platform.
E46 sedans never received LED tails from the factory, unfortunately. :shifty
I'm really annoyed that the coupes always get the cool toys and the sedans are left in the cold. Not cool. :(

The coupes always get the good stuff. E92's got fully LED tails in the refresh model years, where the sedans only had LED turn signals. Just watch; the F-series BMW coupes are gonna have other cool stuff that sedans won't . Just you watch.

I would pull the trigger on OEM LED tails no question, if BMW made them available for the sedan - I much prefer the look over RCR's to be honest. Depos and EE's have too much bad press and the missing LED on the turn signal of the EE's is unacceptable IMO. Also the brake light is a two-stage and the outer ring doesn't light up as in the OEM coupes (so I'm told). At the moment, OEM RCR's are the best that is offered for sedan.

It is very common for non facelift M3s to change over to the other trunk and LEDs. The handle on the stock trunk of the earlier models was really prone to breaking. Ask me how I know :shifty

Yesterday I got rid of my EE LED tails. I had them for 2 years and for the last few months they have been shorting out and not working properly.
I really wanted the RCR look, so I bought some DEPO lenses from Khoalty. I noticed that that insides were darker than the outsides as well. It bothers me, but not as much as the huge DEPO stamp on them. I will be saving my money for something better, either from Turner or OEM if I can find them.
Now I have to find an amber bulb for the blinker in my stock housing. Search bar time...

Question: I pulled out a clear 7506 bulb from the blinker portion of my stock tails. I need it to be an amber bulb (no interest in stealth bulbs, sorry) and it looks like the only amber bulb I can find is a 7507. All of the 7506 bulbs are clear. My initial thought was that the only difference was the color, but when comparing the bottoms, the mounting nipples seem to be a couple degrees different. Will an amber 7507 fit? What do people normally do when they replace their stock RAR tails with RCR tails, and keep the stock guts?
I'm sorry if this is a thread jack.. I'm way out of practice

Yes, it takes some finagling but the 7507's will work. I have them currently installed on mine. I installed mine after failing my last inspection for having clears, then left them in. Egg yoke is negligible imho.

You've got to start it a bit "cocked" (to counter the angle not being exactly correct) then seat it from there.
You'll figure it out.

Thanks again. For the record, I'm very glad to have RCRs installed. I like the way it looks so much better than the LEDs. I will post some pics soon.

Done and done...
Pics as promised. This is the halfway point:

I got all ADD about the install and didn't do it in order, so the halfway point was all mismatched.
Final result, with amber bulbs for the turn signals:

I like this much better
edit: I did this in between huge rain storms.. so my car won't get washed again until Tuesday at the earliest. I feel like I need to mention that since fingerprints are clearly visible where I opened my trunk for the install....:P

Good to see you are still interested in making your ride sick as ever, Lance. Don't be a stranger.

So I mentioned earlier in this thread that I had Eagle Eye LED tails. For the warranty duration (1 year) they worked beautifully. I was a little disappointed when I installed them and had to use some weather stripping to keep water out. But once the weather stripping was in everything looked and worked fine.
Now fast forward to about a month ago. At the end of January the bottom right 4 LEDs of the tail lights go out. I'm pretty pissed because it is right outside the warranty and now I have to try and take it apart to fix it. So I tried tapping on it a couple times and occasionally the LEDs would come back on. So I tried tapping on the left tail light today and it freaking cracks. So now I have 4 LEDs out and a big crack across the tail light.
For the price of probably getting 1 to 2 years out of these tails I would not recommend anyone get them. Very disappointed.

That's too bad. One of the reasons I'll probably be staying away from DEPO LED RCR's.

Try buying 1156A (amber) bulbs, they are everywhere. Just picked up 2 sets this weekend from the parts store for like 4 bucks.
