Unplugging the Battery... newb here

Hello all,

I'm just about to work on the car and just had one question: Is there anything I need to know/concerns about unplugging the battery? This is my first BMW, and it's a rather complex machine (relatively... coming from an old 1989 compact). I'm just worried I may need to reset something at the shop. Changing spark plugs and such, so I intend to unplug the car just to be on the safe side. Hopefully this won't screw anything up, but just trying to be safe. Sorry for the newb question!

Nope, no big issues; the only thing you'll lose & need to reset is your clock time & trip odometer. :thumbsup

The only advice I have is this:

1. If you have your keys in your hand when you open your trunk, and you set your keys down (in trunk), then disconnect battery and close boot lid.....your effed.

2. Always disconnect the negative terminal first.

OK.....so.....

I have ZCW on my sedan. Didn't think it was any different, though breaking out the ski pass (If not installed) can be a save in this case.

One thing my mechanic has told me is to wait 20 or so minutes after turning the car off before disconnecting the battery. A lot of the electronics are still communicating and you may risk frying something if you disconnect it too soon.

This is a very true statement especially for 5 series and above. Same goes for the land rover brand. It is actually in the owner manual for the RRS because you can "brick" the car requiring a flatbed trip to the dealer. Our cars seem to be ok, but I still wait a bit after shutting off before disconnecting the battery.

^^^ The main reason why I didn't opt for a "modern" car. Personally, I think they are over-complicating them these days with all of the tech.
