View Full Version : Higher pitched whine at start up and when under load above 1500 rpm

Seems like one thing after another. Noticed in the past day or so something is causing a rather audible whining noise when the car is first cranked in the morning. Can't quite put a finger on where its coming from either. Would a serpentine belt cause this? It doesn't make a squeezing noise or anything like that. Sounds like a bearing but im not quite sure where to look.

Pulley perhaps. Do the inspections.
Have they ever been replaced? What about the belts?

If you're anyway near 100k miles...now would be a great time to change out the serpentine belt and all three pulleys.

Much obliged. Looks like my CCV is leaking majorly out of the hose that runs from the vanos unit down to the CCV. Im assuming that means the CCV is clogged/failed

Ahh.....so you need CCV kit as well. Links below. Feel free to copy part numbers and see if some of our affiliate advertisers carry these products to help the site out.

Awesome thanks dane. Went ahead and replaced my idler pulley which was causing the noise. Gonna order the CCV in the next day or so.

I can't afford the level 2 kit right now and don't really have a need for the intake boot as I replaced it just recently. So its between these two possibilities.
Cold climate kit 1
http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330i-M54_3.0L/Engine/Emissions/Oil_Separator/ES2550214/
Basic kit
http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330i-M54_3.0L/Engine/Emissions/Oil_Separator/ES260025/
I would like to get the cold climate kit but it doesn't appear to come with as many hoses as the basic kit does. I would hate to order the cold climate kit and need a hose that comes in the basic kit. Thoughts?

Picture wise...it looks like they both come with 4 hoses. Description wise...it's tough to tell, but appears the basic kit has more parts. I don't know what's all included in the purple item below though.
Our Level 1 kit includes the following; Cold Climate
•BMW Oil Separator Repair Kit
•Hose from oil separator to dipstick tube
•Hose from intake manifold back to the connector hose
Our Level 1 kit includes the following; Basic
•Oil separator
•Hose from oil separator to dipstick tube
•Hose from oil separator to valve cover
•Hose from intake manifold back to the connector hose
•Hose from oil separator up to the intake manifold

These were my thoughts as well. Guess I need to contact ECS and find out what actually all comes with that kit. Do you feel the cold climate kit is a lot more beneficial?

Don't know for sure. With the insulation installed....who knows. It should be better for those that experience colder weather?

Took the car for a drive tonight for about 50 miles round trip. Obc estimated mileage at 27.6 where usually I would get at least 30.1 mpg. I know several have stated that winter gas could be the cause of this but in the 3 years I've owned the vehicle I haven't experienced a drop in mileage until now. Something is fishy about it and its driving me nuts! One of the things I loved about the car was how well it did on gas all things considered with it being a six cylinder and what not. Not trying to complain or anything its just one of those things that's bugging me.

Don't remember. Did you read codes?
I'm sure you know your car, and you're probably correct in your assessment.
How consistent is your oil level?

Had the codes read a couple days ago and came back with secondary air system. Which I've checked except for vacuum lines. Oil level is consistent I checked it earlier today. The only thing I can come up with is there is a leaking vacuum line somewhere possibly in the CCV. Im not sure that would cause a drop in mileage however.

I hope that this is my cause then. I ordered the basic kit as the insulated one is on back order. I wonder if i could get some insulation and simply insulate the pipes myself. It looks like pretty standard pipe insulation.

Kit is at home and ready to go inn im thinking about tackling this tonight. My only concern is whether im going to need a new throttle body gasket. Called up to my local dealership its fifteen bucks but a special order item. Is it likely the gasket needs to be replaced or should I be fine without a new one? Several diy's I've looked at have not mentioned it but I thought id ask your alls opinion. Would like to get this done in one swoop if possible.

I would say likely it won't need replacing. I'm willing to roll the dice on your dime.

Thanks dane...I've gotten mixed numbers as far as how long this is going to take...praying for just a couple hours but am prepared to take all night if I need to.
Also want to try and source what's causing my secondary air pump to throw codes. Gotta be a vacuum line somewhere.

I've heard you caaaaan Di CCV without removing intake, but it makes job a lil tougher. Each way has a benefit and dis-benefit.

Removing the manifold is a pain in the ass. I know. If you need to call for assistance, you know where to find my number. Unless you have time and patience, take the CCV parts and examine how they connect and disconnect. Some hoses are made of smaller connections, and that is the key to not finding the biggest cliff in town and jumping. The CCV is a redundant feature and that same redundancy will drive you batty drying to finagle it out between the TB and the first big runner. Best of luck, Will.

Well one of the hose clamping pieces broke as I was trying to assemble. Dad and I inspected the CCV unit itself and mic'd a couple of the attachment parts and compared it to the old pieces. They are all at least ten thousands bigger then they should be as well as having manufacture flaws. Im not sure what company produced this product but im not very happy with what ECS is carrying and selling as a kit. Tried the new hoses with the old CCV and they go on perfectly but the new hoses are an absolute bear to try and work on. Im going back home now severely disappointed after seven hours of breaking my back with little to show for it save a car in pieces...

Went to the dealer and got a replacement hose. Took me about three more hours but the car is back together and on the road again. Thank you all for your help once again!
