View Full Version : Time for Coils (for the engine)

So I've been having a misfire code on cylinders 1 and 5 on my car for the past few days and since I replaced the spark plugs a year ago I'm thinking it's the coils. Car has 143k miles on it so it may be time for all new coils. Is there any advantage to getting the BavAuto performance coils as opposed to the stock coils? They're about $70 more

I've read that they're really only necessary if your running FI but will I see any difference on my car?

You don't need it on a non-internally modified or non-FI engine, same goes with high performance wires and high flow injectors. You might want to replace your wires also since yours might be the original wires. Stock coils/wires are perfectly suited for your car's performance capabilities.
For example: I upgraded the coil on the 02 and I will probably do the same on the 320 but those are completely different technology (standalone coil, not coil-on-plug), I would actually love to convert those cars to use the E46 COP but that is a project I'm not even close to getting to any time soon.

Ok thanks. Are the wires necessary? I was just planning to do all 6 coils.
Wow...same part number...different prices...

I would at least test the resistance on them and make your decision based on that

Does the misdirected code follow a coil? If not...your coils may not be issue?

Yeah I'm going to switch 1 to 4 and 5 to 2 or something and see if the codes switch

You are correct Dane, a misfiring cylinder code will transfer over.

Wait, what wires are we talking about?
Hermes

maybe there are no wires on this engine like the old style... all I can find that looks right is this:

01 wiring harness, engine ignition module 12517551908

There are no high current wires ( "plug wires" ) as the coil is on the plug - those you've shown aren't carrying high current so I didn't think they were ever a concern in terms of wear/mx. Seems to me like this would be like replacing pieces of the chassis wiring harness...
Are they required to be swapped for perf coils?

yeah, I guess the wires don't matter since the plug is right on the coil. Forget what I said about wires

Ok so now the light is back off and hasn't come on during the past couple times I've driven the car. So I'm going to hold off on buying the new coils until the light is on all the time. Car doesn't seem to have any loss of power or anything like that.

I'd take the coils off and check the spark plug to see if it's backing out. A loose plug can cause random mis-fires like you are stating.

I am getting ready to replace my spark plugs and ignition coils when my car hits 75,xxx. Can anyone confirm if there is a difference between this part no: 12131712219A and this one: 12131712219 as far as the coil goes?
Why does TMS list it without the A? Any difference? It's about $35 cheaper to buy from BavAuto but they sell the coils with the "A" on the end of the part no.

Even cheaper here if you decide to go non "A" ones. And they're an affiliate. I dunno the difference.

Bumping this thread for a question:
Wouldn't it be smart to replace all coils at one time? I know you COULD do just a bad one or two, but it would seem smart to me to replace all 6. Thoughts?

Matt,
I'm sure you can just replace the ones that are failing but when I replaced coils on my ZHP a few years ago... I just went ahead and replaced all of them in one shot. I figured at that time since I was replacing my VANOS seals, adding the anti-rattle kit for my VANOS, replacing my VCG and spark plugs, I would just replace all of my coils while I was there already.... it also helped that I have many Mafia members around me while doing this job :thumbsup

+1. One coil failed on my e90 three years ago. I only replaced that one. Fast forward to last month: another coil failed. This time, I will replace the 6 of them. You can find good deals online.

My stock coils went 199k miles before I replaced them. Noticed no difference, no increase in MPGs and I would suspect they are all just fine. I'd replace them As they fail.

No resolution on 19A or 19?
Charlie didn't you mention once that we run M3 coils? Turner show a different part # though.

Random(sporadic) misfire on multiple cylinders can also be caused by a faulty MAF sensor. Mine recently started acting up and after replacing spark plugs and switching coil packs around and finding no consistent faults I swapped my MAF sensor out and it alleviated the issue. It helps if you have a friend willing to let you borrow theirs for a few hours to test out before spending the money on it, luckily I was able to pull one off another car for a few days to verify my theory before shelling out the money for a replacement.

New updated coils were released beginning of this year. I'm not sure what changed. They are Bosch 00044. Also known as BMW part number 12138647689.

eeuroparts.com. Best price I could find. And orders over $100 or something ship free. I think I paid like $27/coil.
