Waiting on CP pistons and need to locate a 2L crank. Technically I could just use the one I have for the 02 engine but I would rather not. Once the pistons arrive I can get the block hot tanked and bored out to match.

JP. Who's doing the block work? Do the CP pistons need a special coating?
If you're not familiar with US Chrome, they will bore the cylinders to whatever spec you want and coat the walls with a NikaSil equivalent for $125 a cylinder.
That's where I'm sending my Porsche block to be overbored 4mm and recoated.
As for the suspension, that shit is whack. I can't imagine why they left the 2002 set up in favor of this.

Justin, I'm having the block bored 1mm. I don't know if the pistons are coated, Carl's buddy in Chicago is who built an engine like this. We're having him send us a set of the same ones he used. I'm basically just copying Ben's setup. Once I get it installed Carl will probably have the guys from Miller make me a custom war chip... I'll probably have to take it up to LA to be dyno tuned

That sounds good. If it has been done before then no worries. Some pistons need to be coated and some don't. It depends if it gets sleeved with a steel wall. A 1 mm over bore shouldn't cause problems with cylinder strength. My concern is that the rings will mar the newly surfaced walls if the coating isn't there. Let me know how it goes!

Nice, that era engine will be my next step. I just need to find a Z3 donor so I can get an alloy block M52 and the front suspension. When I get to that point I will build a 3.0 w/S52 cams. I will probably ref it as a 95 325i so I can use the OBD1 exhaust manifold so I can keep my cat under the trans. Then later I can find some S50 ITBs and headers.

Yeah. Aluminium block and head. I know the M10 is iron, but a coating could help increse power and longevity.

Maybe, but I don't know if it's worth it for this particular engine. If I was going 2.2L I can see spending the money on that but I'm not building a 200hp M10. I think I'll be lucky if I can get to 140 crank. My problem is I still need it to pass smog, which is not an easy task on the M10 when trying to make decent power

The other nice thing about the M10 is that after 30 years that block is strong as hell. Pretty sure my E30 block is stronger at this point than the early blocks were in '81 when Motorsport began using them to build M12/13s. Considering I won't be throwing 60psi of boost to it I doubt it will need a coating (although the /13 did have sleeves to make it 1.5L, don't remember what they were made of)

Those blocks had over 100k miles on them and they sat out in the weather. The team would also pee on them too! Crazy engine in full qualifying trim. 1000 hp per liter is just nuts.

They actually had 100k+ km. This engine had 200k+ miles and has been sitting out for the past few months at Carl's (2 blocks from the beach) so I think I'll be fine ;)

No 24V for the E30, yet.. hehe. The M20 is a fine work horse, no complaints! If I do 24 valve I will just get a used M50 from an E34 525i and call it a day.
This is going in my E36 M3, if you need S52 cams, let me know. I have spare set of S52 cams and a spare S52 crankshaft. I'm sure we can work a good deal

In theory it would, but wouldn't you need to convert the head to chain driven?
Hornung418

It would be easier to convert the crank to turn a timing belt. Chains need guides and extra lubrication.
I think that would be a cool build.

Thanks! Honestly I have no idea what kind of power this will make as Ben hasn't built an engine exactly like this before, just very similar.
The E30 engine I used as my basis in stock form produced 103hp as a 9.5:1, 1766cc, 264*/7mm lift cam, L-Jet injected setup.
Mine will be 2036cc, 11.5:1, 287*/11mm lift cam, and running LH-Jet. I should easily pass 120hp, it's just the top end of the range that I don't know. Hopefully I will be in the 130-150hp range

I hope you will be at 160hp. That Engine might think its a freak and output more. :)

Very true, but my buddy Steve has helped a lot as well. He's not nearly as skilled as Carl and those guys but he's willing to get his hands dirty and help me when I need it. He's been my junkyard buddy and helped me with a significant amount of the projects I've done to this car since I got it.

I did not. I know Carl has some as I saw it the other day but I've never used it before. You have to remember that tolerances on the M10 are not nearly as tight as the S52 so I didn't see the need. Had I been building a 2.2 I would have definitely used it

Yes. It doesn't matter much but since we're going for maximum tolerances it has to be perfect. Ben builds race engines and is anal so we just do what he wants.
They machine the hole so it is correct again, that's where we think the missing .25mm went. On a normal street engine it wouldn't matter since most M10s don't run that high of compression, but since we're going for 11.5:1 we need it correct.
For example, Ben built this two weeks ago for my buddy Mark while he was out here to put my head together:
18672
That is running 13:1 with a 316 cam so tolerances are important. This is why he needed a new engine

Installed the rest of the coolant hoses and the thermostat. I think I might change the alternator to the 80A 318i version from the 90A 325i version I currently have. I don't really need the extra 10 amps as the stock E21 was something stupid like 65A, but because the 90A is a hard mount vs the 80A has bushings and is the correct one for an E30 M10.

figured out my idle issue... apparently I swapped 2 out of 3 of the ICV wires when I converted from the 2 wire E30 setup to the 3 wire Volvo. The stupid ICV wires are blue/white and blue/red on the E30 harness... the Germans seriously couldn't pick another color besides blue as the base?
Now that it's fixed it idles in the 750-800 RPM range. After this video was taken we adjusted the valves and set the timing to 6° at idle. Will now finally get around to soldering and wrapping up the harness to look clean

Ground cables replaced. I repositioned the alt ground from the 318i position on the bracket to directly on the block. I also ran a newer style sleeved cable to the frame from the same unused bolt hole. I will hopefully now not have to deal with oil on my ground cable whenever I change the filter.

Messed with the stock 318i bracket some more. Got it to close enough where it will work for now. At least I can use this as a template to bend up a new bracket. I will also need to shift the hole a few mm off the current position so the cable sits at the perfect angle

Copied from my post on the E21 forum:
I have 150 break in miles so far, initial thoughts...
This powerplant is way more powerful, I have so much more torque. Running a 3k redline I think I am as fast if not faster than my 1.8L was running all the way up to 6400rpm. I have enough power to get up the hill on Scripps Poway Parkway in 5th when I used to have to drive in 4th and sometimes drop down to 3rd just to make it to the top if I couldn't keep the speed up due to traffic.
I think I might need a new ICV because it has a very slow response time. It will drop to about 400rpm before kicking in, and a few times now it has not been fast enough and the car stalls. Unfortunately the Bosch ones are no longer available and I have to order an OE one at appx $360. Will keep looking around to see if I can find a better one and not have to buy a brand new one.
Next step is finishing up airbox mounting and repainting the box

So I put another 100 miles on it; it dieseled a few times. I think fuel is getting past the cold start injector. I guess I need to swap to the '85 fuel rail and make a block off plate to see if it solves the issue.

He said to come back and look in the morning. I went to my car and started it, was waiting for my oil to warm up when I heard a bang. At first I thought my engine blew up, but then I noticed a Toyota with a blown tire.

Some of you saw this on fb so you know the story, but for those that didn't:: the sun was low on the horizon and he guy in the truck was driving west. I think it was a mix of being blinded by the glare, trying to avoid the concrete median, and not being able to tell where my car was due to the height difference of the Toyota and my E21.
The insurance already checked it out and made me an offer; I have to go back to them as they quoted me for US spec parts when mine are Euro.
Good news though... I already have spare parts/my friends hooked me up.

So... I went to the dyno today.
The aftermarket cat I had installed 3 years ago started blowing chunks on the during the second pull so we stopped. I guess it's time to install the headers and build an exhaust, then go back to the dyno.

Justin, it was late at night and I didn't notice the black Nissan Hardbody stopped under a bridge until it was too late. I tried braking and swerving, but my stock pads and 4LTL rack was not adequate. My back was hurting for a while but it's better now
John, body flex isn't much of an issue as the core support doesn't actually do that much for the car. Also, I've been planning to build an Alpina style brace to strengthen up the front (it ties the two frame rails together), I just haven't had time.

It stinks that many of the images on the forums are now MIA with the recent change at Photobucket. These are from my Photobucket albums - the tii & ZHP. I copied the IMG info for the hosted PB image & pasted it directly into the message box here, not using this forum's "Insert Image" icon from the menu. It works, I think!
