Twice yesterday, while coming to a stop from low speeds, after shifting into 1st, my engine turned off.

TPS = Throttle Position Sensor.
Are you sure shifting into 1st has anything to do with it? If you roll to a stop while out of gear, will it still stall?

That happened to me when I had a huge hole in my intake boot and a messed up DISA

not sure, though it has not occurred when out of gear.

If it stalled, I would look into an ICV clean. If it dies...then that would be different.

We need to know what that stored code is.

You said your "Service Engine Soon" light comes on, then clears. There will still be a code stored that tells you why it tripped.

yes, all the lights come on when i start the car... but assuming there are stored codes... where/how would i find that information?

You may be able to have codes read at your dealership for a small fee or free otherwise some parts stores have readers they will let you borrow

You need to go to Autozone and buy an obdii code reader. You're definitely going to want one if you plan on diy'ing.

$5 says it's P0340...Intake camshaft position sensor.
In for codes.
Will test codes as soon as I can and report back.
John was kind enough to send me the code reader.. after a couple of "not connected" readings.... codes came back as "--".
Will try again before I send it back... but a bit disappointing given the cut off.

Are you using it while key is in 2nd / Accesory mode?
If the engine shakes right before it dies it means Faulty MAF or Air Idler Control Valve.. Of course it could be Camshaft sensor or something similar related with ignition & timing.

Yes I am. Tried it three times.
It has not happened since that one day. I'll add those suggestions to my "list" should it happen again and I end up taking it to a mechanic.
I'd say it did "shimmy" a bit.... But not uncommon to it stalling when on too low a gear.

On my ZHP, it ended up being a dirty maf.
Easy way to test it is to unplug the MAF. If everything works well after that, then you have your culprit. Otherwise clean the maf, check for intake leaks, and possibly replace the sensor itself
I had no codes

thanx for the info!
two different approaches to the application- is one better than the other?
The thing that scares me is reassembly... I replaced the air filter on my old Integra years ago, and almost could not get it back on... the "filament" is what makes me nervous.... I can take things apart- getting them back together with clean mechanical tolerances frightens me
Or, as in the second video, breaking things. It seems the experienced dude broke something on final assembly. Ugh.

Vegas Road Trip!! Drive that sucker up here, I will help ya clean the MAF, ICV and change the fuel filter.
Mafia Love...
As Dane stated cleaning the MAF is easy. Just go for it.
Removing the airbox is simple, take your time. Biggest thing is when you put it back together make sure the air filter is in properly. Sometimes when you put the lid back on it bends the foam around the sides. This can cause unfiltered air to get thru.

Once a week cut off. One day happened twice within a 10 minute period.
Surges rpms at stop lights , then shudders and stalls out.
Took it to a trusted mechanic. Ran codes, inspected intake system. No codes, could not recreate.
Shall I have to take this to a BMW dealer and have them find a 2000 problem?
Signer, confused and frustrated.

Has the vanos been rebuilt? My 325 was stalling at lights and stop signs. It was the vanos.
Also, when it starts to surge/stall take your foot off of the brake and see if that helps. If so it could be brake booster issue/vacuum leak.
I would start with a MAF clean as that's the cheapest and easiest.
From there I would check the brake booster vacuum lines and make sure you don't have an obvious leak there (especially if lifting off of the brake resolves the symptoms).
After that if the vanos hasn't been done I'd go there (as it's something you'll eventually need/want to do anyway).
And lastly, I'd go CPS as that's gonna cost you a few bucks.
The brake is always depressed when this happens......
I'll have the maf cleaned.
Since I don't know what he vanos are/do, and I'm not the original owner, I'll say "maybe"??
Sorry misread.
I'll try to take off brake. Sometimes it's with clutch in so I can't react fast enough.
But I'll try!:)
Upon looking at the vanos replacement, the sites listed do not mention car stalling at idle as a symptom. Would this be overkill to replace if not needed?

It's going to die. Mine isn't that bad, but I am dying to repair my VANOS as soon as I have the time and the money. The general consensus is usually to B-System as soon as you can conveniently do it (or maybe even inconveniently).
Ok, but my question was about my stalling. Vanos is not listed as culprit for THAT particular symptom. I can replace... But I need my stalling issue to be resolved.

If you search other forms you will find that although it is not listed on the Beisan site, there are numerous cases of a bad vanos inducing stalls (posts I read were around 2009 when I was having the problem).
Come to think of it, my problem was the worst with the AC on. With AC off she would stumble. With AC on she would stall.
That's how I troubleshot the stalling on my 325 and it 100% resolved the problem.

I think cold stalling was only a symptom for the M52tu engines. But surging was for both M52tu and M54.
I'm going to jump the gun and say that this is a classic Intake CPS issue.
