So here it is!

Since I was a little kid, I always wanted a 7 Series, something about a big car that is fast, has style, all of the gadgets you could imagine, and to be able to drive much like a 3 Series appealed to me. Then add in the fact that my dad has a garage queen E32 that he has owned the past 22 years, I was bound to find one of my own some day.

I had my eye on the E38 since it came out. Loved everything about the car. The motor, the looks, interior, and that every bad guy in every movie had one haha :biggrin Over the years I had driven many, from early 95s, to later models and to the sport models, my cousin owns a 98, my uncle owns a 95. About 6 months ago I decided I would buy one this year. Wanted a 00 or 2001 with the M Sport Package. The lower the miles, the better. Was looking for Alpine White, Orient Blue and of course Imola Red (though knowing how rare they are kinda gave up on the IR)

Well last week I found it, and moved quick on it. 2001 740i M-Sport. 104k miles. Imola Red/Natural Beige/Dark Beige Dash, Cold Weather Package, Widescreen NAV, power rear and side sunscreens. Set out yesterday for the 4 hour drive from Maine to Vermont, where the car was. The vehicle has never seen a New England winter and has been maintained pretty well. Also has a Dinan intake manifold and Dinan software. The owner almost cried when he saw me driving away with it! Says he will move on to a 645i/650i Cabriolet. Anyway, this will be my new daily driver and winter car. Already have a set of E38 Style 60s on snow tires coming. ZHP will be garaged in winter as always. On to pics

Gonna do some maintenance on it in the next few weeks as well.

Not trying to toot my own horn, just want to say, I'm 22 years old, both cars paid by myself as well as upkeep and other costs. Yes, some 90 hour work weeks are common, mostly 65-70 hour weeks, but still, with hard work anyone can have what they wish. My dad taught me that from a young age. (While I was watching him detail his E32) haha :thumbsup

In my opinion the E38 with the M-sport package is probably the pinnacle of BMW blended luxury + performance design. LOVE those cars and that is one hell of an example. Nicely done.

Thanks Jordan! I know we have talked how much we love our 7s! Probably will get it taken care of in the spring. I feel bad driving it in the winter, but it will be parked in a heated garage at night, so that will help a lot with keeping the ice and snow falling off! We shall see!

Once again I have to say congrats on this. I had a '91 735i as my first car when I was 16 and have always loved the look of the E38 (especially in those last two years with the body colored lower panels). I wish I had been looking for one of those but I needed something less pretty as my DD so that's why I got the E21. Hope you have a great time with that car

I never swear, or not very often, on these boards, but I am so god damned jealous of you. That E38 is pure awesome. As stated in my reply to your post in the What Did You Buy thread, I think E38s with the M-Sport and shadowline are just about the sexiest BMWs ever made. Congrats on getting one with the mpars rather than some other god awful wheels someone could have put on there...

My aunt and uncle in Virginia still have a black on black E38... I may have to give them a call now...

So i want to tackle the tranny fluid and filter first. I normally do all my own work but I have a fear of auto transmissions. Called my BMW dealer, friends w the service advisor, quoted me $450. Indy shop in Freeport quoted the same.

The fluid costs around $90. Should I tackle my fear and do it myself? I would say i know my way around cars pretty well mechanically?? Filter kit i wouldnt think is so much more

If it's the same as it was on my e32, it's an easy enough job.

Got a call from my aunt, and she still has her black E38, but she says it has an oil leak and the shop quoted her $1500 to fix it. Not sure if that was just stealership prices or what, but I asked if my uncle can tell me exactly what the shop diagnosed the leak as... I may have to make a trip to Virginia :)

Most likely something no where near that cost. They see a 7 Series and price go up by a lot. Go up and have some fun! :)

Ordered for the 740i:

Oil and filter
OE windshield wipers
License plate delete strip
Interior cabin filters (2)
aFe panel filter
Fuel filter
ZF tranny fluid (Man oh man! 7 liters @ $17 each :( sighhh )
Transmission filter kit w/ gasket and magnetic plugs
Redline 75/90 Synthetic diff fluid
NGK spark plugs

Looks like I am going to be having some fun! :)

I may have to hit up the e38 forums to see what common oil leaks they have. But if it is something simple, I really might have to drive it home. Can't wait to see the progress on your Imola 7er.

Valve cover gaskets and valley pan gaskets are very common on the M62/TU

I have to discover more though. I would say I am pretty experienced when it comes to inline six BMWs, the M30, M20, M50 and M54 (especially). The V8s I have always feared haha. They are great motors though, just have to gain some knowledge on them as I did with the inline 6s. Fun fun :)

I will definitely post my progress with the 7. Especially now that the ZHP will be stored in a month or so, I am going to be getting my hands dirty with this. :biggrin Thanks for the interest!

The most common leak on that V8 is the VCGs. Lots of things to remove to do it correctly, you're looking at 2-1/2 to 3 hrs. And when you do that, you're 2/3rds of the way to removing the intake manifold. Do yourself a favor and remove it, replace the PCV and oil return line under the intake manifold as both fail around 100K miles or with age. And then you're right at the valley pan gasket, so check it and replace as necessary. Plus you're right by the rear cooling system manifolds, some gaskets and o-rings at the back side of the intake manifold that are easy to address when you're in there.

See how that easily spiraled, if your aunt's estimate included all of that then she had a complete estimate from a smart mechanic. If it was the VCGs only, they were trying to price gouge.

Yeah, I had the similar V8 in my E32, the first job I ever had to do was remove the intake manifold for the "rear manifold plate"... It has a rubber diaphragm in a chamber with the air intake on one side, and oil on the other. As oil pressure build on one side, the diaphragm adjusts the intake pressure in the manifold. What I did not know, is when that rubber piece fails, oil goes straight into the cylinders. So I of course immediately thought I had blown rings or something. Luckily, someone on the E38 bf.c boards swooped in to correct me.

When I was considering a V8 of the E39 or X5 awhile ago the only thing that worries me is the timing chain issues that occur when the plastic guides break apart. That was the biggest issue if I recall and can usually be heard ( timing chain noise ) before it really gets bad.

I still like them tho and wouldn't mind having one, I want so many BMW's haha.

How anyone could ever see the E65 as an upgrade absolutely blows my mind. Now you just need to look into sourcing an E39 M5 manual swap(it has been done before).

Swapped differential fluid with Redline 75/90 Synthetic. This is the old fluid, which I actually expected to be worse. Still has some transparency to it, no burnt smell(smelled like the new stuff) and there were no metal shavings on the plugs (checked and they are magnetic). Now I'm hoping the transmission will be in the same shape and even better!

Exactly this.

How anyone could ever see the E65 as an upgrade absolutely blows my mind. Now you just need to look into sourcing an E39 M5 manual swap(it has been done before).

Weren't the components in a few of the manual swaps done with the E31 8-Series parts? I seem to remember reading this in Roundel or Bimmer some time ago.

Was the reason to change it simply a lack of documentation saying anything had ever been done to the diff fluid? Just did it as preventive maintenance?

Yeah, I had no records of it done. So I wanted it complete.

Transmission fluid is finally done! My what a PiTA that was -_-

Old fluid, original with 108k miles. Original filter as well in the pan (ZHP covered in the background) :)

Ughhhhh

Tranny pan, before and after
6462
Magnets all cleaned up and new gasket installed. Surprisingly there wasnt that many metal particles on the magnets!

The car shifted fine before. Now though it shifts incredibly smooth! No movement at all when putting in reverse, just very very smooth, as a 7 should be! :) shifts between 1st, 2nd and 3rd cannot be felt at all! :)

Sorry guys I have not been around in awhile. Been very busy with work and also trying to do a lot of maintenance items on the 740i and my dad's 735iL is getting a front end rebuild/lowering. So been browsing 7 series forums for awhile.

Little update on my 740i, replaced both lower and upper control arms about 3 weeks ago. Also ordered quite the list of new things for it yesterday. Starting to notice the difference in part cost between a 3 Series and 7 Series :eeps

Power steering pump
power steering pulley
power steering hoses
power steering reservoir
Water pump
water pump pulley
adjuster pulley assemblies
thermostat
expansion tank
radiator
upper and lower radiator hoses
serpentine belt
a/c belt

Also received my Umnitza Orion V2s with remote, anxious to install those too. Still need 2 new rear michelin pilot sports for my 18s :facepalm

I keep seeing a 2001 OB 740i for sale of CL. He wants something like $2600...very tempting.

From a GS3, this was sent.

so... have you found any good performance mods? All I can find for the M62 is a drop in filter, Sprint Booster, software tune, or a VF SC. Nothing like the quantity of stuff that seems to be available for M54 mods

Well mine has Dinan software and the Dinan intake manifold. I honestly find the car pretty quick really, haven't looked into performance mods. My parents have a 2013 535i M-Sport and my E38 feel sportier in every way, acceleration especially. Power/weight specs are pretty similar.

Dinan manifold, might have to look into that

I have heard that the Dinan Intake manifold for the M62TU is an OE manifold from an M60. The truth to that, I am not sure though.

This wouldn't surprise me because rumor had it that the Dinan muffler for an E36 was simple a slightly gutted M3 muffler.

It's true. It's basically an M50 manifold for the S52B32 in the e36 M3s.

so I'm supposed to look for a M60 manifold? thanks guys!

edit: my buddy has one for me! Next question, do I need the M60 throttle body?

Well no, I'm not sure to be exactly. Just a rumor I heard.

Nope it's been confirmed. The basic concept is that the larger runners reduce low end torque, but increases top end flow. That's what the M60 manifold does on an M62tu.

so which throttle body?

edit: after further research it seems that M62TU is drive by wire so no throttle body change needed on a 2001 Shorty Sporty, if anything you overbore your stock one at the machine shop
