Ok, Folks. Put my intake in last night, and had to remove it three times due to various fitment issues and hood alignment issues. I ended up with it pretty close, but it bugged me all night long. Finally at almost midnight and after hours of searching, i found this pdf. Intakes are very easy to install, but there are two items here that might be overlooked during this install.
1. the stock airbox has a small intake on it that goes into the cavity beside the driver headlight. This extension is reused on the BMW box. Remove it and pop it into your new box.
2. the expansion tank has a tab on it the is removable. this tab lies right underneath the new intake for the BMW box. The new scoop will not lie flat without removing this tab. Trust me.
Now, see this laid out in a nice pdf for all to follow. Time for full removal and replacement (with this prior knowledge: 20-30 Mins)

Much appreciated as I will be going with the BMW Perf intake this summer.

Thanks!

Dude, thank you for this! I had the same problem, after I closed my hood the first time, it was all out of whack. It eventually did close with no problems, and I've opened and closed it many times with no problems, but I was wondering why the scoop sat so high up. Who would have known that piece slides right off. It fits in there perfectly now. Now I'm going outside to fraps you all a video of inpa running with the car on.

I was hoping i wasnt the only one to encounter this. I thought i was pretty handy until last nights fiasco! Its always the easy ones that turn out to be a pita.

^No kidding. Once you've seen it done, done it yourself, or have good documentation it becomes a lot easier. It probably helps to have some general auto experience as well, which I have little of.

Now might be a good time to buy: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330i-M54_3.0L/Search/Clearance/ES35341/. Not a bad deal at all!

And I am wondering just how long they're going to keep it at that price. Eventually, they're going to sell out. I'm wondering if BMW is going to keep making them. Those things were almost $1000 not long ago. Now they're under $300.

Keith, I'd buy it now. Waiting until summer could be a mistake.

Is the filter on that lifetime and can you sub it for a k&n or afe one?

I think it takes a stock paper filter doesn't it? You just bend into that shape?

It's basically the same size as the stock one, but it has an additional air inlet w/scoop above the headlight and the interior setup is different. The interior cavity is definitely different.

Fyi. I just took mine apart to answer dane's question. Im embarressed that i did not take it all apart before install and know this already. It takes a filter very similar to stock, but it is longer and narrower. It has a plastic mold that the papaer filter slides in to to make it curved. Im not sure the size.

Any opinion on this vs. aftermarket K&N or aFe? Marcus, didn't you have the aFe? To me there is something pretty cool about seeing the exposed cone (K&N) and the induction noise...

Marcus-SanDiego

I've had both. I noticed more noise from the aFe. I don't notice any performance difference. I like the BMW Performance intake better because of its looks.

Having a really tough time tracking down replacement filter info for the intake. Pulled the numbers off of the filter but can't find anything online. Just emailed Tischer-- see what they get back to me with.

Doing the install today.

Thanks.

I took her for a good hard drive yesterday and also a highway run to AC for dinner and can honestly say I noticed no difference in performance whatsoever. I'm sure the 3 hp is there, it's just not enough of a difference to feel.

To me, she feels the same, sounds the same, and runs the same.

That being said, she certainly looks better with the hood up now.

Worthwhile mod for me, but if your mod money is tight or you have a lot that you want to do, I'd put the $300 elsewhere...

From what I've read, BMW engines are already at a fairly high level of tuning. There is very little to be gained by intake/exhaust etc. You've got to spend some serious dough and go deep in the engine for real gains. The ZHP is in a really high state of tune. Different software, cams, exhaust from the sport package.

The poor mans supercharger is the differential. This is probably the best mod I've done so far. Makes for more fun n' grunt in 2nd gear corners and makes passing so much easier!

Ok, the plot thickens. Heard back from Tischer. Part number is 13720431649 and their price is $53.89.

No luck searching for that part number on other sites so far (well, I did find it on Pelican, but it was almost $70).

From the info I can find, the performance intake filter is 10 1/2 X 6 5/8 inches, while the stock filter is 9 3/8 X 6 7/8 inches.

I did a dimension search on the Mann website and the closest filter to that size is a C2759/1-- but of course I can't find that filter size for sale anywhere either.

Plan on figuring this out before I'm forced to pay $50 for an air filter.

Update:
I took my Performace intake apart today. Ive had it just a few months. The top corner of the filter where the intake lead from the hood vent (the original air passageway) was really dirty. I took the filter out, and rotated it so that a new portion of the filter was placed there. I recommend all of you that have this intake do this every few months.

Just installed one of these today but I'm having an issue with the fitment. I did remove the tab on the expansion tank before I started. Now though, I can feel there is an issue somewhere because my interior hood release is quite a bit harder to pull so it has to be hitting the underside of the hood somewhere. Also I have to drop the hood from about 8" or 9" to get it to latch where before 4" was high enough. I'm sure the intake is seated all the way down so I'm not sure what's going on.

Can someone that's had one installed for a while now look on the underside of their hood and check for rub/wear marks? I'm thinking it's got to be by the new top snorkel just by how much more tension I can feel on the hood release. If it was the body of the intake hitting the hood it would just flex the hood I'd think and not be putting this much more pressure on the latch.

Any ideas or suggestions anyone? I'm concerned about it eventually causing the hood release cable to snap! I have to say though, it does sound better now, not a big difference but I can definitely hear it from about 3500 rpm and up.

Thanks.....Barry

Thanks David. I just went and tried it again and now it's much better.:blink Hmmm....I hadn't tried it since I had went for a drive after installing it so maybe it settled a bit somewhere, possibly into that lower groove. Works almost as good as before, good enough that I'm not worried about breaking the cable anymore. I'm gonna go try putting a little grease on the latches, that should help too.

Thanks again......Barry

To save some headaches, get a packet of dielectric grease ($1.00 from any autoparts store). That grey o-ring in the opening that the MAF sensor connects to can make it near-impossible to put on. I spent about 45 minutes trying to figure out why the crap it wasn't fitting. I called my local BMW shop and they said to take some dielectric grease, lube up the o-ring, and it should definitely help.

It did the trick! Slid right on, nice and snug.

That was the only hard part I had in the entire install. Everything else was insanely simple.

Thanks, I actually had a tube of o-ring lube I got from my brother a couple of weeks ago. But yes, it was a little tricky to get that o-ring started even with lube.

Tischer BMW and Faulkner BMW (both dealers) were selling these for sedan and coupe. No discrimination between coupes and sedans.

Success! I found an alternate filter to fit the Performance intake.....a Napa Gold 6301. Other than being about 1/8" narrower it's a perfect match. I even pulled my intake apart and test fit it. It takes a little more finessing to get it seated perfectly but once it's screwed down it will work just fine. It comes with a wire mesh layer on it and I think if you wanted to snip off that mesh it would be just as easy to fit as the $55 BMW filter. This one was $9!

I wish now I wouldn't have ordered a spare from BMW with my intake.

In this last pic, since this was just a test fit, I didn't have the 4 bottom screws all tightened completely, if I had the 2 top screws would have sat flush. Be careful when tightening these two down so that you don't break those two fragile looking ears off.

Ok-- a little follow up. I did some research based on Barry's find.

The Mann website has a compatibility search function. When I put in this Napa Gold filter, it shows that it has a matching filter (MA1039). link here (http://www.mann-hummel.com/mf_prodkata_usa/index.html?ktlg_page=6&prdsl=11083&ktlg_lang=1&ktlg_03_sFrNo=6301&ktlg_03_sFrNoList=6301&ktlg_subpage=0&gobackToPage=3)

I then checked Amazon and they have the Mann version available for $8.48 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DRNNQW/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=zhpcom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=217145&creative=399349&creativeASIN=B001DRNNQW). I just ordered one up so I can evaluate fitment.

I'll report back in a few days.

Nice find!

Thanks guys, beers sound good to me! This is kinda right up my alley as far as what I do for a living so if anyone was going to figure this out I should be able to. We just used the book at Napa that lists all their filters by size and after trying a 6098 that I saw mentioned in a different thread we checked this one and it looked close enough to fit. At first I wasn't going to actually buy one but I figured for $9 I might as well try one before telling people it would fit.

Nice Keith! I see that one also has the wire mesh, it would be nice to find a brand without the mesh. Just be careful when fitting the filter, that plastic cage that holds the filter in place fells pretty fragile and I don't see it listed separately in the parts fiche. I might try cutting it out of this one and see how flexible it feels then. It not really that hard to bend this one into shape with the mesh but it's definitely easier to do with the BMW non-mesh filter.

Also just FYI, Napa filters are just a rebranded Wix. I used to be leery of using a Napa filter until I realized who actually made them.

Barry

EDIT: Ok so I cut the mesh out of this filter and it wasn't hard to do but you have to take your time so you don't cut the filter material. Having done it I think I'd suggest just trying to install it with the mesh just to play it safe. I inspected it with a magnifying glass and it looks ok but if you can fit it fine with the mesh I'd just do that and leave well enough alone.

Just installed this intake today, wanted to give a big thanks to Mtnman for the .pdf link (I would have never thought to remove that clip) and Zell for the dielectric grease idea. I spent 30 minutes trying to get past that o-ring without success. A quick dab of grease and 30 seconds later it slid right in.

Thanks again guys, <3 ZHPmafia.com

I believe the Mann should be good as it is the same size as the one Barry got to fit.

I bought it, I just haven't pulled the intake apart to test for it yet.

Maybe this weekend.

OK brutha. Thanks for the backup. That was the first one we were gonna try...but then I know Barry went all crazy and started looking for off brands. I assumed he did this because the Mann did not fit. My bust.

Yes, a light layer of grease or even Vaseline is ok. Just don't overdo it. Oil might work too.
