Been waiting 40 minutes... Just "please wait a moment..."

Cannot find anything in manual.

Any ideas what this is?

Thank you

That's odd. Did you try switching off ignition? If that didnt work I'd try disconnecting battery for a few

Sent from my POS Droid. -_-

+1. Also, I have a firmware update CD I can loan you, you could try that.

John-
Thank you!
Do I need the updated maps if I upload the cd?

Hah, welcome to my world. I spent the first 5 months of ownership getting rid of that screen. When i first looked at the car, I mentioned to the dealer that the nav was not functioning (showed the same thing you posted above when I took the test drive). He swapped out the drive with one from another car... That fixed that problem. Then I couldn't get the car to accept that it was in a new location (kept thinking it was in New Jersey, even after I drove it down to Florida). That was taken care of by rando's help (he let me borrow his firmware CD that I used to update my car). From there, the car wouldn't track correctly. That turned out to be a slice in the antenna wire insulation. Once that was taken care of (no cost, I just removed the extension wire that had the bad section and relocated the antenna closer to the computer), I finally purchased a burned copy of the 2012 maps (not necessary, but I live in an area with a lot of new roads, so I wanted all of them) from eBay, and I finally had the Nav working, 100%.

Good luck, if you need any more help, I can try to offer my experience. Or, hit up sna77 (Steve). He's a greay guy and very willing to help too.

Wow. And ouch.

Thanx. Maybe johns firmware will help.

Sounds like I may be in for some tough times.... Car is no longer under warranty..... Sounds like an expensive dance with the dealer.

Thanx again.

I wouldn't get worried about it. Yes, the dealer wanted $2000 for a new computer and $900 for a new antenna. That is why I did everything myself. I was able to source a new computer on eBay for about $400 (although I didn't need it) and the antenna was also found on there for around $50 (again, another cost I didn't need to spend).

But, all in all, I spent $5 for shipping to borrow John's firmware disc, and $30 for the maps disc on eBay.

And of course, I have the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself. :thumbsup

Do it. :thumbup

Yes, I need to do this.

Maps may be found on eBay?

JupiterBMW

Yes, eBay. Let me look mine up and get you the seller name. They had a ton of them on there, so it should be easy to locate. The disc came from New Jersey, so shipping doesn't take too long either. Here's a link to the same disc I bought, from the same seller...

Jupiter... Can you photograph the back of that disc you bought on ebay. Obv it's not a legit disc for $30 (new ones are $200 from the dealer).

If it's a burnt DVD (DVD-R) the BMW MKIV will have issues reading it over time. These drives are only designed to read commercially made DVDs in which data is made via a stamping process as opposed to "burnt..."

OP: Your best bet for a genuine, reliable Nav DVD (assuming you are west coast) is to split a new disc set with a Mafia member on the East Coast. For $100 you can get a brand new OEM DVD that covers half the country where you live.

I for one am NOT in favor of that thread being made sticky / used as the standard for upgrades. It is a customization of the OEM system--NOT the OEM system.

It lists the firmware as version 32.2 (SW4-1/02). This is just a made up number. The final BMW release of the MKIV system is from the v. 32 update CD which is firmware 4-1/00.

If we are telling people how to update their NAV systems, we should be recommending doing everything OEM. Anything not OEM, should be properly identified as such, and come with the necessary disclaimers.

I know my OEM map DVD and OEM Operating System version will not be a potential problem when troubleshooting issues... I can't say the same about anything else...

Okay, so on my 740i, it has MkIV DVD nav. When i press the nav button on the screen it says the "Please wait a moment" and then after a little while says error reading disc. Now I know it is a BMW DVD. After some research i ham reading the lasers are known to go bad, anyone have any info on this?

It's one of 2 things (or maybe both).

1. Bad DVD. If it's a burnt disc, definitely try a legit disc

2. Worn out laser. 5 minute job to replace it (done 4-5 of them). $99 for the part from www.getbmwparts.com

Thanks a bunch! After researching a bit, i thought it might be the laser as well. The DVD is from BMW. I might attempt the diy. Cant say I am too experienced with a soldering gun, but I guess I cant make it much worse than it is!

I'll try and have my dad help me, he used to be an electrician for Mercedes in Greece :thumbsup

whoa, whoa whoa! This kit is plug and play. No soldering necessary--just a few different screwdrivers / torx etc. I was hesitant to link that thread as it has a lot of useless info in it. The BMW kit is $100, and is plug and play. Someone suggested buying a slightly cheaper kit and soldering it himself. Seems silly to me. This is a very easy repair!
