Can I get a list of steps for that? I feel like the number of beeps before he engaged the starter was important.

I'll bet if you disconnected the fuel pump the lights would still go out as they have nothing to do with fuel pressure.

What are we watching for? I don't get it.

My car usually starts a lot easier if I wait about 2-5 seconds after turning the key to the "on" position.

I've noticed that too... I turn the key so that the fuel pump engages wait 1-2 seconds then start it. It usually starts easier... meaning it cranks less to turnover

My car starts right up, even if I go right to the start position from the off position....? Is there a known issue with slow starts on older/more abused cars? I'm still confused about this thread.

Never heard of this... Mines an 01 with 104,000 on the clock original fuel pump and fires right up from the off position... I think this is one of those things you think works so you convince yourself

I'm not saying mine labors to start... It just seems to crank slightly less if I give it a second before turning the key all the way

Mine Wil crank and crank and finally go, only to find out it's been put into safe mode. Restart and all is well. Fuel filter and pump are on the to-do list.

at startup, i always: turn key to position 2, then wait for the full 8 beeps from the ignition system before turning over. you can hear the fuel pump building up pressure while the chimes are going. it stops almost EXACTLY after the 8th chime. i've always assumed the chimes were just for that reason - telling you to wait to turn over until they're done.

Chimes are for the seatbelt warning. You can get that coded out, btw.

Good to know you can get that coded out. I'm definitely going to hit someone up for that. I ALWAYS wear my seatbelt, feels weird w/o it.

interesting, did not know that. i guess it serves 2 purposes now...

where's a good place to get "coding" done? i would love to get rid of the warning chime when the door is open and key is in position 1.

If the injectors aren't leaking and the check valve is keeping gas in the fuel rail at least somewhat pressurized, you shouldn't need to wait more than about a second to have sufficient fuel pressure to start the car. If you have to wait longer to avoid rough starting, you probably have a problem that should be fixed.

When I saw the video, I was like, WTF? :scratchinghead

BTW, I checked the owner's manual and it simply says "start the car". I would think that if there was a procedure, it would be in there... don't have an M3 manual to look at...

I turn mine to pos 2, then pat my head and rub my belly at the same time before turning the engine over :p

Mine has been starting a little slower lately. Changed battery, no difference.

Fuel Filter is usually suspect if you have hard starts after changing the battery.
