View Full Version : HELP! Need advice on VMR wheels!

Hi all, I'm still fairly new around here but I have some more info I'd like to share.

If you didn't know already, I had a silbergrau '05 325Ci (sports package) that got totaled a few months ago, which ultimately led to my purchase of my current silbergrau '05 330Ci ZHP. The insurance money covered the purchase, and I am concluding my chiropractor visits soon. I should be expecting some extra cash sometime in the future.

I had previously made this thread: http://www.zhpmafia.com/forums/showthread.php?7869-ESS-Twin-Screw-or-M3/page2

I was thinking of getting the ESS SC or even an E46 M3 but I have decided to keep the ZHP but put that SC on hold. Not a good investment to shell out that much at this time, since I will need to pay extra to upgrade other aspects in order to accommodate the extra boost.

Instead, I would like to get some wheels. Specifically, VMR V710's.

I love the look of the factory ZHP wheels but they are a pain to clean (I used to Q-tip in between the spokes :eeps) but I like the V710's even more. Plus I want to reduce weight.

All suggestions are greatly appreciated! I admit, I am very naive when it comes to wheels and as such, I'm hoping to just be able to buy a set of 4 and be able to slap them on and still use the tires I have now on them without also having to add spacers or do any adjustments.

Enlighten me! :)

VMR's are nice. I have only heard good things.

But....

BBS.

I have OEM (BBS :p ) CSLs on the e90 which are basically the same as 710s, don't expect a easy cleaning experience lol, it sucks!!

As for VMR, never heard anything bad about them.

You have silbergrau, maybe look into gun metal? Probably don't show break dust as bad.

Just FYI, the V710s are not perfect CSL replicas. If that's the look you're going for, you need the VB3 or V703s as they're listed in the VMR site...

Anyway, I really like the VMR wheels myself. If you want an easy cleaning experience, I think you should look at the V701. Those wheels are HOT.

Yep, what Jon said.

Also realize VMR's aren't much weight savings and actually in some cases depending on how big the rims are, you might be adding weight.
If that is any issues, look into some APEX ARC8's or like Dane said, BBS.

V710s are a closer replica of the HRE monoblock wheel while the VB3(what I have) is the CSL replica. I do agree that the 701s are pretty hot too...
Depending on where you get them the finish may or may not be OEM quality and have heard some things about using wheel cleaners on them and them not holding up. I only use soap and water and keep them waxed and haven't had any issues and would reccommend if you weren't going to go the BBS route.

i looked at the VMR 710s (in fact if you look at my thread two threads down, titled "New Wheels: Decisions, Decisions" you'll see i was leaning towards those initially), but found the Avant Garde M310s to be a better option. visually, they are nearly identical, but the M310s are low pressure cast, meaning they have a higher load rating and are slightly lighter. the 18x9 ET38 M310 weighs just under 24lbs. nearly 5 lbs of weight savings per wheel. car is peppier and they look great imo.

Like Dane said....if you want the best then I say go with BBS. You will pay out more but these rims are OE for BMWs...

For my ///M I went with VMR VB3s and couldn't be happier. The hyperblack finish is perfect for my TiAg and I still love the CSL styling. :) The V710s are also awesome wheels and if you get them you will be happy. Being in New England....we are notorious for having an abundant supply of potholes (ask Chad44, SNA77, Nivo, or BP) my VMRs have held up perfectly over three years of usage. Amazingly enough in three years I haven't had any curb rash on them (knock on wood!)

Other than the occasional chip from road debris, the wheels themselves are sound and true. I'm sure if you get the V710s they will be perfect...:thumbsup They will be easier to clean over the VB3s and should look great! I would get these but they don't come in hyperblack which is the color I find best suited for my ///M.

Here are a few pics of the VMR VB3s I'm currently running on my ///M

http://i395.photobucket.com/albums/pp37/macdctr/Color.jpg

When I replace these I will be going with another set of VMR VB3s but with 19X10 in the rear vice 19X9.5 :) VMRs are good quality wheels at a great price :thumbsup

Thanks for all the input guys. All these other mentions and the pics....:drool
I can't decide on which set just yet but I definitely will be getting something.
Quick question though, for those who have aftermarket wheels, did you sell your ZHP wheels or did you hold on to them?

How did that come about? Most people just go for reps, and I know OG rims carry a pretty hefty price tag

I have Beyern Mesh wheels as well. Kept my Style 135s so that I can switch things out from time to time. Also have a seperate set of 17" winter wheels I use during the winter months for my ZHP :thumbsup

The Beyern Mesh are fitted with Dunlop Direzzas and my winter wheels are fitted with Firestone Winterforce tires. My Style 135s have Pilot Super Sports....awesome tires! :)

OP, if I were you just keep your style 135s...

i just sold my 135s. i live in texas, where we have very mild winters, so i run summer tires year round. therefore keeping the 135s didn't make much sense. if i lived up north i would probably have kept them for winter tire swaps. also they were taking up a lot of space.

Silver-grey with VMR 710 19". Pretty happy with them. They are noticeably lighter than the stock wheels, even being 19" and one tire size up. Steve

sorry to hear that. i did the same thing recently. when it happened i broke down in shrieking anger on the sidewalk on my street lol. i felt so ashamed, and after only one day went online and bought a new wheel. it was gonna be $60+ shipping for a repair kit, $120 for a refinish at a wheel shop, or $250 shipped for brand new replacement. went with the last option, and plan to sell the curbed wheel for $100 locally.

it won't happen again.

I would keep them but I most likely won't ever put them back on, and they'd just sit there for a long time. Seeing as how they're not damaged or anything, I figured I could sell them and let someone else enjoy them, maybe a member who needs replacements or another non-ZHP E46 :santa1

for me it was a stupid flat tire on my driver's rear. The rim (my Style 135) was damaged but reparable and I went ahead and ordered a brand new wheel instead...

here are a couple shots of the Avant Garde M310s. specs are 18x8 ET35 F / 18x9 ET38 R. same effect as running 12mm spacers compared to stock.

Are they "plug and play?" As in, once you have them, you can just take the stock wheels off, fit the tires on the new wheels, put them back on and you're good to go?

Also, why no center caps?

Yes, plug and play. I transferred the tires from my 135s. They come with their own center caps, you can put pinwheel overlays for less than $10

I know I'm late to the party, but if you like the look of the CSL but want a more aggressive look but closer to the CSL go with VMR 718. The M310 and VMR 710 are awesome looking wheels so either way you'll be lookin' good.

The VMR's don't look as bulky to me as the AGs do here (maybe its just the lighting or finish on the wheels. :dunno). I just know with VB3s and the Alufelgen versions (forgot name) the Alufelgens are bulkier looking which turns me off.

Keep in mind the above photos are 19" and 18", respectively... So, that might throw you off a bit. I agree, the tops wheels look less 'bulky' but again, I think part of that is due to size.

Both look hot btw... :thumbsup

yeah of course the 18'' wheel be shorter/more stocky looking than the 19''. personally i think 19'' wheels are too big and too aggressive for the E46 unless it's an M3 with the flared wheel arches. of course your opinion may vary. variety is the spice of life.

BimmerWill
09-08-2012, 09:45 AM
18's are the best all around size Imo from what I've seen and with roads getting worse before they get better the more rubber you keep between the wheel and pavement the better off your gonna be. I think 19's look great if you can afford the tires and don't mind sacrificing a little ride quality. Ill be picking up a square set of the 710's at some point when I have the cash...possibly next summer :( price on them really isn't all that bad either...probably going to be close to 1200 including tires when its all said and done.

Update: I decided to put a hold on the wheels. Some things came up, plus I just signed myself up for a 1-year membership to L.A. Fitness and got a personal trainer.

Maybe once my attorney & chiropractor clear things up, I'll continue with the purchase.
Very disappointed.....I had emailed ModBargains already and was ready to go to their La Habra store to check their inventory......:facepalm

Not sure if anyone had mentioned this before, but V710s are replica's of Breyton GTS Wheels.

VB3s are the replicas of CSL wheels.

After seeing the price and weight of the Breyton wheels, IDK why people would even buy the VMR version. The difference is only a couple of hundred bucks total.
