From the end-all be-all thread on this topic on e46f:

2001 to 2007 E46 Cars including the M3
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 916 241 (July 2001)
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 915 711 (Sep 2001)
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 919 072 (Dec 2001-Jun 2002)
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 921 963 (July 2002-Jan 2003)
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 927 902 (Feb 2003-Aug 2003)
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 941 505 (Jan 2004)
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 943 429 (Oct 2004) MP3 Capable
Alpine, Model CD53, Part Number 65. 12-6 961 215 (Dec 2005-May 2006) MP3 Capable

So yes, the 429 does play mp3s. It was, however, highly prone to failure and was often re-manufactured into a -430, so a -429 and -430 are essentially the same thing. the -215 is the uberdesirable one but was only in coupes for those 6 months and is super hard to come across.

Long story short, this post is probably about the only way you're going to get an mp3 capable factory radio, especially for this price.

hmmm yea i just found the post where it mentions what you said... i really dont want a radio to fubar on me... im not in a hurry to get an mp3 one as i've dealt with a non mp3 for years but it would be nice to have. thanks for the quick note though

In all fairness, my '05 has an original -429 and it still works fine. You're not going to find a -215, I can almost guarantee that, and 430s aren't a ton more reliable than 429s. What i'm getting at is this is a pretty good deal, especially for a bill and a half.

Yes it plays mp3s and yes it's still available.

I took this out for my dynavin clone that is in the car now. It worked great and had no dead pixels or anything. Coating on the radio is great as seen in the pics. Let me know.

btw will i need your Original radio code to get this up and running? and i am assuming this should plug and play directly on my 03 wire harness.

Hmm. I bought the car used and never had to use a radio code. I believe the harness should be the same but the antenna connector might be different on a 03. The 03 might be the RCA style antenna while this one has bmw connector. You should b able to get an adapter off amazon if this is the case.

Hopefully someone can comment on the radio code and comparability with 03. I'll try and research later today during work but I'm getting ready to leave for the week so might not have much time.

Sean,
Did you ever find an answer on the code question -- is it needed, is there a work around? The wife's conv has been mostly parked for the winter but when shuffling cars around last weekend I noticed its pixels are dying. This car has a Spring '04 birthday, so it probably has the 505.

Bruce I never had to enter a code after disconnecting my battery. My car is an '05. I've done limited research and it looks like e46's don't have codes, but earlier versions like e36 did.

I'll check my manual today for a code, but as far as I know one isn't needed.

Edit: '02+ no code
