All:
I was happily whizzing along Sunrise Highway on the way to the beach this morning when my passenger side rear tire literally let loose. The entire tire tore apart all the way around the inner circumference. Also a big hole in the inner sidewall. I have never seen anything like it. Indeed, by the time I safely puuled to the side of Sunrise Highway, the tire was smoking and untouchable. These tires are only 2 years old. I still have about 50 % tread on the fronts but I was surprised to see that the rears were almost at the tire bars. Very disappointed. Well, I'm in the market for new tires. Suggestions? Will be ordering from Tire Rack for sure.

Continental Extreme DWS for the best bang for your buck.
Seems like a ton of members here run Michelin Pilot Super Sports which don't quite have the same tread life, but are absolutely amazing tires.
I think there was a tire thread around here somewhere, but I would just go with one of those two options. I currently have Conti Extreme DWS and I think they are great tires.

Thanks, I am on Tire rack right now and have it down to the Kumho Ecsta 4Xs or the the Conti Extreme DWSs. I had the Pilots and they are certainly a great tire but they wore out really fast. I'm looking for more of a all year tire that will last more than 25,000 miles. I still can't get over the catastrofic failure of my tire today. I wasn't even going that fast and stressing it.

I bought a set of Kumhos and a set of DWS rears (matched up to an existing set of DWS fronts with 15K miles) within one month of each other at the beginning of the year for the ZHPs. DWSs at almost 10K miles and 6+/32nds left on the rears, 5+/32nds on the fronts at 25K miles. Kumhos have 8K miles and a solid 6/32nds on the rears and 8/32nds on the fronts. Other attributes, DWS is quieter, better grip, and better in rain, I'll continue buying DWS from now on. Other attributes, DWSs are on the conv which is a 300-400 lbs heavier car. No tram lining on either tire, have taken 500+ mile trips in each and no complaints from either one.
Once my tires hit 4/32nds, I start shopping for the next set, not willing to go all the way to 2/32nds and risk problems trying to milk a few more miles out of them. I figure I'm going to get about 15K miles out of the DWS rears and 30K on the DWS fronts. This is consistent with what i've gotten on previous DWSs. Kumhos I'm guessing will need replacement at 13k miles on the rears and 25K miles on the fronts.
Last air pressure is important. I run the fronts at 32-33 and rears at 35-36 for tire longevity. Ran one set of DWS rears at 40-42 because the door jamb label said 45 which I felt was too high, those rears only lasted 10K miles and wore out in the center which told me they were overinflated.

Just purchased the Kumho Ecstas from Tire Rack. By the way, is the donut type spare tire standard or do most of you guys have a full spare? Also, I was not too impressed with the BMW jack. Kinda shaky.

I had full size on 325i ZSP...and have donut on ZHP. It's a weight thing....but for me....being on. The road as much as I am...would love a full size BBS spare.

Yea, the regular wheel really didn't fit in the well so I'm thinking that it is designed to house the donut.

Wow I never really had problems with Potenzas before. But I did have Re090 non run flats.
I will be purchasing Continental DWS for my car in a couple of weeks. I already sprung for new pads, oil change, res delete so money needs to go towards other things for the time being.
A really critical rating to look at is the UTQG ratings. DWS's have the highest treadwear ratings sub $250 per tire for my car.

bridgestone RE01R are practically race street category tires. They are the father tire of the RE11. Their treadwear is only 140 which shouldn't have even lasted 2 years on the rears.
personal favorites for daily driver tire is Continental DW/S, Michelin SuperSports for a long term daily tire.

Holy hell! I've only seen that on dry rotted tires. That should never happen within two years, even in areas with all four seasons.

Was the rear inner tread wearing out faster than the rest of the tire? The cut is so perfectly straight..

That's a good question, I thought it was wearing even but then again I knew I was getting new tires this fall so I didn't check in a while. I still can't believe this thing.

I'm just glad you didn't have a major accident cause of it! I've seen worse at my dealership and usually its abnormal wear from the tire from a bad alignment or damage near the wheel. BUT there were times a brand new tire just blew out of nowhere too.

That what someone's wheels look like when that particular individual is an anal retentive ass --i.e. me. Now if I could just get every paint chip taken care of I would be a bit more stable:)

Reviving an old thread because last week I had a very similar blowout on a rear Bridgestone Potenza RE760. It looked almost just like echo46's, but I forgot to take a picture. I don't blame the tire though because I drove it beyond the wear bars and was doing autoX with a little drifting on it 3 days before that. And I was running about -2.0° camber in back so the inner shoulder was worn. Failed at 65mph on the freeway. Part of the tread was flopping around making noise in the wheel well but I didn't think it was blown. Pulled off into a U-haul parking lot and was very surprised to find a shredded tire.

Surprised?? Glad you and the car are ok. What will you replace them with?

Surprised for 2 reasons.
1) It didn't feel like a blown tire when driving, no "whump-whump-whump"; maybe because it's low profile.
2) The entire inner sidewall was broken like in echo46's picture. I would expect it to blow out in one spot and the rest of the sidewall still be intact.
It was making funny noises in the wheel well for a bit before I pulled off the freeway. Maybe it wore/blew through in one spot, deflated, and then the sidewall shredded because I kept driving at freeway speeds on a flat tire. Replaced with Pilot Super Sports.
And I'm thinking of going with less negative camber front and back. Front is fairly easy to adjust with camber plates. Back requires a little more work. But I could go to about -1.5 front -1.7 rear for now and back to -3.0 front, -2.0 rear for race track later.
