View Full Version : Summer Detailing

So since I've been doing a lot of detailing this summer I figured I'd make a thread about it.
This is what I did tonight. "Boss Lady's" SL550. Just did a wash, clay, glaze, wax, quick interior wipe down and wheels and tires. It is garaged 360 days a year so it didn't need much.
Sorry, but for now all I have is some phone pics so they won't be great, plus they are in a garage since I finished at 11:30pm lol. I'll get some outside pics tomorrow.
Products Used:
-Chemical Guys Citrus Wash
-Autoscrub Nanoskin 3" kit
-Dodo Juice Clay Lube
-Chemical Guys Creme Glaze
-Dodo Juice Orange Crush Soft Wax
-303 Aerospace
-1Z interior cleaner
-Chemical Guys Glass cleaner (love this stuff!)
-OptiBond Tire Gel
-A paint safe degreaser made locally was used to clean the wheels and door sills.
probably forgetting some stuff but I think that's most of it

The 550s are no joke, they pack a punch.
Before you know it, you'll be packing a rotary doing full correction!
Looks good.

Yeah my gpa has a s550 and it also kicks when you get on it.
I have my griots buffer but haven't invested the $$ into pads yet. Hopefully soon though. For now, if there's a bad spot or area, I'll just hand polish it.

Just FYI, whenever you're clay barring a car you should be following it up with some sort of polish.
When you clay bar, you're actually marring the paint, and causing damage.

That is a lie. I clay my car without marring paint. You are inexperienced, reckless, a total noob, and should give up on life now. I am perfect- and claying my car without marring the paint is as easy as taking out the trash.

I started working on a 2007 silver 335i sedan tonight. He asked for a full detail minus polishing. Washed it, clayed it and began glazing it tonight. Will hopefully finish it tomorrow. Pics to come!

Got a new bag today at Lowes. Everything shown in the picture, which is the stuff I normally carry with me, fits into the bag! It rolls and is pretty durable and has a Lifetime Warranty. It holds ALL of my stuff besides my buffer and towels. I will use my griot's garage bag for my buffer and such and then I have a tote for my towels or I could even lay them on top in the Kobalt bag since there is still quite a bit of room on top. I'm very happy with the bag overall!

Now the one you guys would care about. I picked this up yesterday around lunch and finished it up tonight. 13 hours were put into the paint correction/detailing. It's a 2013 BMW 550i M-sport. Jet black of all colors. At least I've had 2 jet black cars so I was able to handle it pretty well. Did a 3 stage paint correction/polish. I'm very happy with the results and very proud of this one.

Awesome thread. Could you post some pics of the engine bay(s) before/after? I'd like to try and keep mine as clean and as refreshed as possible, but am curious as to how to go about doing so, e.g. what do I need to cover, can I spray it down with the hose, products to use, etc?

06-21-2014, 09:10 PM
I wish I had some before pics of the engine bay. I completely blanked on the Lexus and only got an after pic. I don't offer it as a regular part of any of my details, it's an add on service the customer chooses.
For the ZHP you should cover the alternator, any exposed air filter if you have one and any other electrics you see that are in the open. I used a plastic bag or tin foil to cover the alternator on my ZHP when I had it. You can use a hose as long as it's not a direct stream. Usually I'll use the mist function on my nozzle to wet the engine bay down lightly. Then use my APC and various brushes. Then I'll spray if off with a shower setting so it's not high pressure or a ton of water going in at once. I also keep the stream of water constantly panning back and forth to prevent to much water buildup anywhere.
As far as products, I use Grime Reaper as my APC. Diluted anywhere from 10:1 to 2:1 depending on how bad the grime is. I use an assortment of brushes to scrub then hose it off. Then I'll dress with either optimum dressing or chemical guys gel depding on which I grab first.

Chris, thanks so much. What is your opinion on using WD-40 as a dressing? I've seen that in a couple of DIY's but figured it'd be best to ask around. Would it work similar to actual dressing or is it worth it to just go for the "real thing?"

Meh, why would you use that when there are so many proven tire dressings on the market? Adams just released their new formula last week. Sonax, Meguiars, Adams, P21s, etc. are all good choices...I wouldn't ever consider using WD-40 on my tries.

Haven't updated in a while. Here are some more that have been done!
SLK 55 AMG. Came in for paint correction and full detail! BTW the line on the entire drivers side of the car is a key mark that the owner decided to fill himself. Was an awful job and I told him I could sand it down and blend it back in again so it was barely noticeable if at all but he told me not to bother. So I just compounded and polished it more and it was reduced a lot but still visible.

Then was a Jaguar XK. In decent shape when it came in so it got a detail with one step with Blackfire SRC finishing and interior detail.
Didn't get any befores since it was a mobile detail and was short on time.

I really need to be more focused on taking before pics haha.
Then my girlfriend got a new car so I did a one step with Blackfire SRC finishing and sealed it with Sonax polymer net shield.

I like it. Very easy to apply but can be a bit tacky to remove. Make sure you put in on VERY thin. I haven't had it on a personal car so I can't see the long term effects but I'm going to see my girlfriend this weekend and she's had it on her car for over a month now so I can give you an update on how it's holding up after this weekend!

I'll tell you, one sealant I really have liked recently is CarPro hydro2 and reload! For customer cars I use either Blackfire, sonax, or hydro2 to seal them.
I'll actually be coating my car this winter which is new for me. I bought a CarPro Cquartz UK for the car and Opti-Coat 2.0 for the wheels. Just need to find time at home to do it as it will take an entire weekend considering the "Set" time for the cquartz. Very excited to try it out though!

Great work ! - What device do you use for the foam ? Do you run various products through it depending on the application? Can you adjust the foam level?
Thank you!
HokieZHP

I use a pressure washer and a foam cannon. I use different soaps depending on whether I am stripping previously applied waxes and such or just maintenance washing soft paints. You can adjust the foam level. The best way to adjust it however is to control how much soap you put in the reservoir. More soap gives you a very rich and thick foam whereas less soap makes it more watery

I hear newspaper works best for cleaning the inside of the windows...

I tend to just use a glass microfiber to spread it then go back with a clean mf in small circles and wipe off any remaining residue.

Yup, I think going back again after 10 mins or so gets rid of most of the streaks and hazing if there is any.

Got my first order of microfibers from The Rag Company today. For anyone looking to buy microfibers DEFINITELY look into these! They are fantastic quality! I have a huge MF collection and these are my new favorite.
I got the following in this order. Didn't want or order a lot in case I didn't like them. They have phenomenal reviews though!
-Everest 800 towel
-Eagle edgeless orange
-coal miner
The purple towel and glass towels were freebies!

Chris, I'm looking to do a little refreshing/winter detail this weekend with a friend of mine. Any recommendations for a dedicated swirl remover? Or a compound that would do the job? Any other tips for winter prep/care?

Are you looking for just one product to take care of swirls and such? Or multiple?
Can you take a picture of your paint close up showing its condition?
One of my favorite products for one-step jobs is Blackfire SRC finishing polish. Finishes down pretty well and has good corrective power when paired with the right pad and technique. I use it with either a medium or fine pad depending on paint condition. Here's a 50/50 shot using the Blackfire SRC polish with a LC tangerine pad.
Other good products are Wolfgang total swirl remover. If you want something local, Meguiars M205 is a great product as well when paired with a good pad.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/09/30/yjupyvyv.jpg
As for winterizing I'd suggest getting a durable wax or sealant to use. Popular ones are Blackfire Wet diamond, CarPro reload (2014 version), Collinite 845, Menzerna Powerlock. I'd also suggest coating your wheels with a product like CarPro reload (I use it on my wheels). For the carpro dilute 1:1 for dark colored paint.
I also tend to rejuvenate the rubbers on the car before winter. Many products to do this with. I also tend to use a glass coating to help with snow and rain

Awesome info! Nice MF towels too - might pick some up. I know that it's generally a good idea to color coordinate MF towels, but aside from color, there are so many different ones. Are the differences between MF towels for drying, for glass cleaning, and so on really that drastic? I currently have one $5 dedicated drying towel from CG and then like 20 generic ones from Oreilly Auto. What would be good to add to the collection?

I've only recently discovered how vast the microfiber world is. There are different types, closed loop, open end fibers, korean made, japanese, chinese, etc. Hence my order of these high quality MF towels ;)
Previously, my go to were the yellow CG towels as well as an assortment of others from AutoGeek. However, I've noticed they're leaving micro scratches when wiping off my last step products. Korean made Microfibers are considered the best you can get which is what these Rag Company towels are. Give them a shot and you won't be disappointed!
I color coordinate my towels. Black ones are for metal, my yellow ones are now for interior, door jambs, and engine cleaning. These new orange and white towels are strictly for paint work. As they begin to wear out, I'll slowly bump them down the totem pole and buy new ones for paint work.
For me, since I'm now doing this as a part time business I need high quality towels to preserve the freshly detailed paint finish. The Eagle towels here: http://www.theragcompany.com/16-x-16-DETAIL-MASTER-PRO-Eagle-Edgeless-Orange-41012-1616-O-EL.htm would be a good paint towel. Very reasonably priced too. Microfiber madness products are also very good.

I'm prepping my BMW this Wednesday as well as my Miata for winter. Wash/Decon/Claybar/Seal with Jetseal109. Should hold until next April of 2015. Then I will do a paint correction on both.
One thing I would highly recommend is to prep your wheels too. I'm going to try Carpro Hydr02.

Nice choice. Hydr02 is good stuff. I use it or Reload when I detail cars on their wheels.
On my personal car I actually used Opti-Coat 2.0 on my wheels so they're good for a long while!

Opti-Coat 2.0 was kind of the ultimate protection for wheels. However recently there's CarPro DLux which is a coating for wheels. I haven't personally used if but lots have and love it.
Otherwise if you don't want to use a coating, Hydr02 is a good choice as well as CarPro Reload.

Hey Paul,
So I was just up in NY visiting my girlfriend with her Subaru that I put Sonax PNS on a while back in August. She has washed it 5 times with ONR from what she told me. (I got her a kit to take care of it when she moved up there) It sits outside 24/7 and so far the PNS is holding up great! Beading is still great! However it was freezing cold so I didn't get a chance to stand outside and wash it and really take a closer look but so far I'm impressed.
In other news, I was really looking forward to trying Cquartz UK coating on my car but looks like I've scheduled too many cars next week during my Thanksgiving break to have time to do my own. So I will probably be just doing a light AIO polish and putting Sonax PNS on my car since I have been very impressed with it on my girlfriends car up in Buffalo, NY!

Few more shenanigans were done this week during my Thanksgiving break. First up was a New(ish) BMW Active Hybrid 3 which got a one-step and wax. It only had a few thousand miles so didn't need much. Used M205 to clean it up. The trunk had seen quite a few winter golf days as you can see haha. My time limit for this was 7 hours including lunch so I was hauling ass trying to get it done so not many pictures. Apologies for the after pics, it got dark before I finished. The dots all over the car is rain

Next I was contacted to do a full detail on a 1999 BMW Z3M Roadster in Cosmos Black. The owner had just bought it and wanted it cleaned up. Engine bay, interior, paint, wheels, wheel wells. Basically he gave me free reign to make it as nice as a could. However, the paint was left about 90% corrected since he wanted to do some touch ups and have some dents pulled so it's coming back in the spring so I can try and get the paint as perfect as possible and touch up any defects acquired during the repairs. However, I think it turned out very well. I had this car for 7 days and worked on it in between other jobs. Definitely put more hours than I almost any other car I've done before.
For the paint I used:
Menzerna FG400 on LC Hyrbid orange pad
Menzerna SF4000 on LC Hybrid White pad
CG Blacklight (2 coats) on LC Hyrbid black pad
CG V07
The car sits inside 99.9% of the time which is why I went with a more visually pleasing LSP compared to a traditional durable sealant.

Then I was asked to do a New Car Prep and winterization on a BMW X3d (28d). Car was new with only 600 miles on it. It was Carbon Black on Mocha interior which is such a sexy color combo! The owner let me drive it around and I love the car! No before pictures since this was a last minute detail before I came back to school today.
Paint was in very good condition. Surprisingly the dealer did a good job not messing up the paint at all. There were a few swirls and scratches that were light enough that they were all taken care of with some FG400 and a white pad. The interior was cleaned up and the paint was sealed with Sonax Polymer Net Shield and the wheels were sealed with CarPro Hyrdo2.

Then a few smaller ones. Did another maintenance wash on the Audi R8 that I maintain for a local customer. This time I helped him diagnose an issue he was having with it and in return he let me have it for the night :D 'twas a lot of fun!

Then a BMW 328i was cleaned up and winterized as well. No paint correction, just cleaned and sealed up with two coats of Collinite #845. This was done before another appointment so no pics really.

Thanks man. I also just ordered a new Flex 3401 buffer to try out. It was between that and a Rupes 21. Since I already have a Griot's 6" I figured I'd give the forced rotation Flex a try. If I don't like it I'll sell it and get a Rupes

For those who care. Did a one step on my dad's new 1960 Austin Healey 3000 he bought last summer. It was pretty swirled out and faded but that's all fixed now! Used a 1-step with FG400 and a LC hybrid finishing pad on my Flex. Then waxed since it doesn't get driven much.

Then I was also asked to do a Lotus Esprit for a customer. He just wanted a 1-step and sealant done. So I used FG400 and finishing pad on my Flex again and sealed.

My brother just picked up a pretty rare car. 2008 BMW 328i wagon 6MT!! Has sport, comfort, premium and everything else except nav. Car is alpine white over Terra leather which looks amazing! It was a one owner Euro delivery car that I found just outside of Boston, MA just 2 hours after the ad was posted. We bought it the next day. He's been looking for one for a while now. That does mean that Karen is being sold. For those of you at the BMW meet a few years ago, Karen was Matt's 2005 Subaru Legacy GT wagon which currently sits at 300awhp!
Anyways, car was a MA car it's whole life so paint was a little rough. I did a 2 step correction.
-washed with CG citrus
-Clayed with medium clay sponge
-M105 with orange LC hybrid pad on Flex 3401
-Blackfire SRC finishing polish with white LC hybrid pad
-Sealed with CarPro Reload
Only snagged a few pictures due to him leaving for his internship but it came out pretty well considering it was done relatively quickly.

Thanks guys. I'd been searching for months and then randomly went on cars.com and found it. Called the guy and he laughed at how quickly I called after it was posted.
Cool thing is it's only got 65,000 miles on it! Interior was dirty but once it was cleaned it's almost immaculate! Got the car for a steal too because the owner found another car that he needed to buy that week.
He's got big plans for it which will develop over the summer! He wants wheels, coils, tint, exhaust and misc little things.

You do some really nice work. I worked at a detail shop when I was a senior in high school and I would love to do this on the side once I get out of renting apartments and have my own garage. Is this something you do on the side or full time?
What are your thoughts on the NanoSkin Autoscrub compared with traditional clay? Any different results, or just faster/easier to use? Do you use any kind of carpet cleaner or steamer for the interior?

Hey man sorry I just saw this. This is something I've done on the side when I can fit them in. Now I'm doing it more regularly while looking for a full time job.
As far as nanoskin goes, it's 10000x better than traditional clay. I haven't even thought about traditional clay since going to Nanoskin when it came out a few years ago. It's faster, easier, doesn't get ruined if you drop it (just rinse it off and keep going).
For interior, I use cleaners and a low pressure power washer to get sand and such out.
