View Full Version : Another ZHP in the great commonwealth of Virginia...

Hello all, and a big thank you for saving me from myself!

I bought an '05 ZHP MT Sedan off lease back in 2008 with about 38k miles on it. Amazing car, to be honest I had no idea how special (or, not special?) it really is until later. First BMW for me, and my only other real seat time had been in an e46 M3- so I had no idea how spoiled I really was! Local indy mechanic/dealer/racing shop found the car for me and basically just said 'you want this.'

Earlier this year, with the car getting close to 100k miles and starting to show a bit of age, I decided the time was right to trade up to a newer car. Trouble is, where do you go from a ZHP? Every time I drove a newer car I started a shopping list in the back of my head of mods just to make it as good as my stock ZHP.

I'm pretty comfortable under the hood of most cars and have always done a lot of my own maintenance, but until recently I was afraid to touch the BMW. After spending a lot of time on forums, particularly this one, I decided the smart move was to keep my car and start doing my own work. So many helpful people, and great DIY guides!

And some mods, of course.

I managed to sell my wife on the idea that I'd saved us a pile of money by not buying a newer car (see what I did there?), so I should spend some fixing up the 330.

First was the maintenance stuff;
Driver's mirror had the creeping brown rot- replaced the glass.
Cracked fog light lens; replaced both with m3- style clear glass lenses.
Lower grill was faded to grey, repainted flat black.
Central lock/hazard switch wasn't working- replaced the part. Then discovered the broken tab issue, realized I could have saved $20... oh well.
Shift knob had lost it's insert- replaced with new ZHP knob with the backlight mod.
Headlight lenses were pitted and fogged, cleaned and polished.
Alcatera steering wheel wrap was matted and smooth; did the magic eraser trick to clean it up. Amazing.

I still need to replace the window regulator in the front passenger door- have the part. And I've got headliner issues on the c-pillars, still need to tackle those.

Then, with most of the annoyances taken care of, I started the fun stuff!
Clear corners, markers, RCR tail lights.
Black kidney grills.
Strut tower bar. (front)
Angel eyes.
Carbon fiber roundels.
CAI. Not sure I like it; showed up on Craigslist locally and I decided to give it a shot. Does add some to volume, and enhances the growl, which is good. Feels like I'm losing a bit of power though. Might sell it and go back to the stock airbox with some kind of drop-in panel.

Posting a few pics I took when I was thinking of selling the car, so all are pre-mod. Need to take some of how it looks now, but it's filthy right now. She needs a bath before her closeup...

So if you managed to slog through my story, thanks! You guys saved me from settling for some inferior newer car for a lot more money! Glad to be part of the family.

Glad to see you decided to keep her :thumbsup

You will get many more years of joyful fun, especially when modding and doing your own maintenance :) Welcome to the family :biggrin

Once you restore your headlight lens I recommend you get headlight film to protect them. For $30 it will be well worth the investment :thumbsup

You can order a set from NextLevelRide at: http://www.nextlevelride.com/store/headlight-films-autos-trucks-vans-bmw-3-series-4-door-sedan-2005/ (http://www.nextlevelride.com/store/headlight-films-autos-trucks-vans-bmw-3-series-4-door-sedan-2005/)

If you do decide to sell the CAI, depending on brand, I'm your likely buyer cause I'm local. I'm looking for AFEs, Dinan, or BMW Performance. What part of Virginia are you located?
Thanks,
Bruce

Shiny new parts!

Ill see if I can't keep this thread up a bit- installing Koni yellow shocks on the rear tonight. Rogue upper mounts, replace the spring pads. I'm leaving the springs alone for now, and the RTABs.

BTW good call on those rogue rear mounts.

Nice work. I did the same not too long ago and love the new feel. What stiffness did you set the shocks to?

Curious to know how the car rode on the road trip you took it on.

Car did great on the trip. We did just shy of 2,000 miles over 4 days. I wasn't able to get the struts done before we went, so we had the original struts and the new Koni yellow shocks. Set them in the middle- I'll likely tighten up the adjustment when I install the fronts.

Overall it's hard to judge the performance in cornering, feels a bit squirmy because of the mismatch. Definitely an improvement in daily driving though!

It was beautiful up there. Crazy warm too- we went to the Packers game. It was 78 degrees without a cloud in the sky. We got sunburned, in October, at Lambeau field! Spent last night in your hometown actually, made the treck home today from Indy.

I bet it was & it seemed like a great game in person. That's all the commentators were talking about how the weather was very warm when I was watching the game on TV...Hopefully the Indy accommodations were good & glad you guys made it safe & sound!!!

Waiting for you to drive the car to work one day so I can drive it with the new suspension set-up :)

You and me both!

One of the brake calipers was too far gone for a home rebuild, corrosion on the piston and in the cylinder. Had to order a replacement.

So I finally got everything back together and aligned, been driving it the last few days. I ended up doing Koni yellows, original springs, new spring pads all around, upper strut mounts, strut tower reinforcement plates, Rogue upper shock mounts, Z4 RTABs with ECS limiters. Also new brake rotors, calipers and EBC Red Stuff brake pads. (Did poly FCABs last fall)

Initial thoughts? AMAZING. I had forgotten how good this car really is. Still playing with adjustment on the struts, I have the rear shocks at 1/2 turn back from full.

Unfortunately none of this has fixed my fairly aggressive steering wheel shake around 55-60 mph. Running out of ideas! (Has also survived new tires and balancing)

Maybe try rotating the tires/wheels from the front to the back and put the rear ones on the front? Otherwise I can only think of the hubs/bearings and maybe the steering guibo.

For the mirror, http://www.radar-mirror.com/Mirror_Repair.html

That's a thought- but I have been through a new set of tires/balance and it didn't change the vibration.

Swapped the steering guibo last spring, so not that either.

Driving behind you today I noticed how composed your suspension. The car looks to be planted very well and when it goes over bumps or imperfections on the road, it takes them very well.

Great looking zhp.

Noticed the other day your got your windows tinted. Was it done locally? Looks great :)

Thanks! I did, and can't believe I didn't do it years ago. In the one or two days it hasn't rained this month it has made a HUGE difference in solar gain on that black interior. And it does look good, doesn't it? ;)

Had it done locally- guy came out to the office and did it for me. He was pretty reasonable I thought, and did a very clean, professional install. Ping me if you want his contact.
