View Full Version : Vanos rebuild

So im beginning to get the cash together to rebuild the vanos unit. While I'm in there i'm also going to replace the VCG which is leaking so figure I might as well get them both out of the way. Im going to be getting the seals from beisan systems, I don't believe I need to get the rattle kit as mine doesn't seem to be making any of the symptoms of that.
From what I understand I need the VCG set and 15 grommets as well as the vanos gasket. Is there anything else that I'm missing or should do while im in there?
Thanks for the help.

If you're going that far, go ahead and do your spark plugs, too! I would also reconsider doing the rattle kit. I mean, if you're in there...

Well I replaced the plugs around 50k ago but i guess i could do them as well...trying to save cash is the anti-rattle really that beneficial or is it more of just eleminating a noise? I dont have the rattle so it would seem unnecessary to fix what isn't broken...*knock on wood*

I was told the rattle is just noise, it doesn't hurt anything, and if you don't have it by now, you may not get it. When I do mine, even though I don't have the noise (knock on wood), I'm still going to get the anti-rattle kit.

It's a matter of choice. If it ain't broke, though, don't fix it! I'm just saying it might just be a "Since I'm in here..." moment. It does not degrade performance to have the rattle.

I didn't install the ratlle kit when I did mine since I didn't have any rattle. Since you have to set the play based on feel and hope you got it right I figured I was better off not fixing what wasn't broke.

John, I didn't have any rattle with my VANOS but when I rebuilt my VANOS, as you know, I went ahead and installed the anti-rattle kit. I figure preventive maintenance is a good thing :thumbsup
My luck, I would develop a rattle after replacing my VANOS seals....it was worth it for me and I learned a lot from everyone at the meet and you saw just how hard it was to do this...:biggrin

I watched Charlie do it (and helped a little, emphasis on little), it's really is easy. It's basically following instructions and turning wrenches... no real tricks (other than the backwards threaded screws but that's in the instructions). Nothing hard to take out or put back, no deep recesses, no fluid bleeding, no black magic... just taking stuff apart, putting it back.

I've been wanting to do it for forever since I got the car as well as the pre-cat sensors since lately its seems a little lacking in the umph department just haven't had the cash for it being a full time student only really able to work on the weekends. Todays my last day of summer classes though then im gonna try and start making some extra money to put in the car. She's in need of some TLC :(

If you are going to do the vanos and you think you need O2 sensors I say do it. Once I had my valve cover apart it was amazingly easy to reach the sensors.

Just make sure you have all the tools necessary to do the job right and you won't have any issues. Replacing the VANOS seals by themselves is an easy job as John elluded to. I'm not usually confident in doing a big job like this but with all the mafiosos there, I had plenty of help if I needed it. I found that reassuring so I was okay with doing this job.
Installing the anti-rattle kit, however, you will need a vice to do this job. Luckily, Dane had everything and I was able to get everything done during SIGFest :thumbsup The one thing I wish I had done was to take pictures during every step but I was too excited at that time....:)
Delvin just did his recently... he could provide his thoughts on this...:thumbsup

Will.....I do not understand your question?
On my page HERE (http://www.e46turbo330ci.com/?page_id=769) , I show the difference between the OEM spacer and the Beisan Machined unit.
By posting these images I am not implying anything about cost savings or a DIY :-)
OEM after 130k measures at 7.42mm

Beisan Kit Spacer measures out at 7.28mm

Yes, it will fit. I took the part number for an M54 vcg and searched the part # on realoem and it showed this......

Sorry if I was being confusing guys lol. Had to work third tonight and last night so im a little out if it. Turns out the guy I got them from works at the local dealer. Sold me the oem Vcg and the fifteen grommets that I need to do the rebuild. So now all I needs the beisansystems kit and vanos to head gasket. Anyone feel 50 bucks was a good deal for oem gasket and grommets? I know ECS has it cheaper but the shipping is fifteen bucks...

Take your time, read and reread the beisan directions and you will be fine. I did it when I bought my whip and am very happy. Make sure you put the Permatx on the half moons and in the corns but make sure not get get on the inside of the valve cover. Let us know if you have questions.

Got it done in about seven hours with a couple breaks in between...completely worn put but can already tell a difference..here's a pic of her inside ;) was really pleased with how good everything looked despite 193k on the clock.

Thanks....now im playing the "did I double check the torque on that bolt" game...running great so far...going to wait for the break in period to finish before I give a final verdict but it does seem to have improved the torque in the low end already.

Update:
So far really happy with the improvements that have been made in the low range already with less than fifty miles on the new seals...definitely feels like it has woken the motor up from a stupor.
